Swelling and delamination of inorganic homoionic montmorillonite clay in water-polar organic mixed solvents 査読有り国際誌

The smectite group of clay minerals (smectites) consists of negatively charged clay layers and interlayer exchangeable cations. They are spontaneously delaminated in water to form single clay layers when the interlayer cations are small alkaline cations such as Na+ or Li+. This phenomenon known as osmotic swelling has fundamental importance in constructing novel clay-based nanomaterials. However, osmotic swelling of smectites has not been systematically investigated in organic solvents although this phenomenon should be useful for developing novel clay-organic nanocomposites. We report herein that montmorillonite, a typical smectite, with monovalent and divalent inorganic interlayer cations shows osmotic swelling accompanied by delamination of clay layers in water-acetonitrile and water-2-propanol mixed solvents, although inorganic interlayer cations have been believed to be inappropriate for delamination of smectites in organic solvents. The delamination is confirmed by a combination of macroscopic sample appearances, XRD patterns, and SEM images. Montmorillonite with interlayer Na+ or Li+ ions shows osmotic swelling in pure water and the mixed solvents but not in pure organic solvents. Montmorillonite with alkaline earth dications in the interlayer spaces is swollen in water-organic mixed solvents but not in either pure water or organic solvents alone. Partial delamination in several systems can be clarified from SEM images even though the sample appearances and XRD patterns do not give firm evidence. Such non-uniform swelling behavior of montmorillonite is related to the disordered stacking of the aluminosilicate layers with different morphologies in the clay powders as observed by SEM.

Formation of a desirable submillimeter-scaled assembled structure of particles in the colloid is a difficult subject in colloidal chemistry. Herein, a submillimeter-scaled ordered assembled structure consisting of highly anisotropic two-dimensional plate-like particles, niobate nanosheets, was obtained through an optical manipulation technique that was assisted by a scattering-force-induced stream. A 532 nm continuous wave laser beam with a power of 400 mW was used to illuminate a liquid crystalline niobate nanosheet colloid from the bottom side of a sample cell, inducing the stream of oriented nanosheets toward the upper side of the sample cell. As a result, a 200 μm ordered assembled structure consisting of oriented nanosheets was formed. The assembled structure was also characterized by two-dimensional anisotropy, reflecting that the highly anisotropic morphologies of each nanosheet and the shape of that structure were dependent on the polarization of incident illumination. This study has revealed a new noncontact and on-demand way to obtain submillimeter-scaled ordered anisotropic colloidal assembled structures of nanosized particles such as nanosheets, contributing to fundamental materials science and expanding the utilities of nanosheets.

Although smectite-type clays are used as heterogeneous media for photofunctional guest molecules, the guest species are limited to cationic or polar molecules because of the intrinsic negative electric charges of clay particles. Nevertheless, in this study, aqueous clay colloids are reported to affect the photoisomerization kinetics of anionic and cationic azobenzene molecules dissolved in the colloids. Under UV-light irradiation, the clay colloids decelerate trans-to-cis isomerization, while under visible-light irradiation, the clay colloids accelerate cis-to-trans isomerization. In addition, the sol-gel transition of clay colloids affects the kinetics. The results considerably expand the applicability of clay colloids as matrixes for functional organic species.

Aqueous binary colloids of niobate and clay nanosheets, prepared by the exfoliation of their mother layered crystals, are unique colloidal systems characterized by the separation of niobate and clay nanosheet phases, where niobate nanosheets form liquid crystalline domains with the size of several tens of micrometers among isotropically dispersed clay nanosheets. The binary colloids show unusual photocatalytic reactions because of the spatial separation of photocatalytically active niobate and photochemically inert clay nanosheets. The present study shows structural conversion of the binary colloids with an external electric field, resulting in the onsite alignment of colloidal nanosheets to improve the photocatalytic performance of the system. The colloidal structure is reshaped by the growth of liquid crystalline domains of photocatalytic niobate nanosheets and by their electric alignment. Niobate nanosheets are assembled by the domain growth process and then aligned by AC voltage, although clay nanosheets do not respond to the electric field. Photocatalytic decomposition of the cationic rhodamine 6G dye, which is selectively adsorbed on clay nanosheets, is examined for the niobate-clay binary nanosheet colloids with or without domain growth and electric field. The fastest decomposition is observed for the electrically aligned colloid without the domain growth, whereas the sample with the domain growth and without the electric alignment shows the slowest decomposition. The results demonstrate the improvement of the photocatalytic performance by changing the colloidal structure, even though the sample composition is the same.

Binary colloids of two morphologically different particle species cause phase separation containing liquid crystalline phases. Although electric alignment of colloidal nanosheets has been investigated for colloidal systems consisting of single nanosheet species, that of binary nanosheet colloids has scarcely been examined. We report herein the electric alignment of aqueous binary colloids composed of niobate (NB) nanosheets from K4Nb6O17 and commercially available graphene oxide (GO) platelets. The NBGO binary colloids show multiphase coexistence involving liquid crystalline phases induced by the NB nanosheets, whereas the employed GO particles do not contribute to the liquid crystallinity. The NB nanosheets in the binary colloids are electrically aligned in parallel to an AC voltage (1 kV cm11 peak to peak, 50 kHz) applied to the sample. When the concentration of GO in the binary colloids is low enough, the GO particles are also electrically aligned although they hardly respond to electric field in the absence of NB nanosheets. Combined optical microscopy of bright-field, polarized, and fluorescence observations demonstrates that isolated GO particles are dragged by the aligning motion of the NB nanosheets forming liquid crystalline domains. The results indicate that collective motions of colloidal nanosheets can induce participation of isolated particles.

© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH Two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous heterostructures combining ultrathin nanosheet morphology, periodic porous surface structures, and diverse hybrid compositions have become increasingly important for renewable energy storage and electronics. However, it remains a great challenge to develop a universal method to prepare 2D mesoporous heterostructures. Herein, we report a composite-micelle-directed interfacial assembly method to synthesize heterostructures of an ultrathin 2D material covered with mesoporous monolayers assembled on both sides. To demonstrate the concept, we first fabricated a new sandwichlike carbon@MXene@carbon mesoporous heterostructure through the self-assembly of exfoliated MXene nanosheets and block copolymer F127/melamine-formaldehyde resin composite micelles and subsequent thermal treatment. Finally, we demonstrate that the carbon@MXene@carbon mesoporous heterostructured nanosheets manifest remarkably enhanced electrochemical performance as a cathode material for lithium–sulfur batteries.

Inorganic layered materials can be converted to colloidal liquid crystals through exfoliation into inorganic nanosheets, and binary nanosheet colloids exhibit rich phase behavior characterized by multiphase coexistence. In particular, niobate-clay binary nanosheet colloids are characterized by phase separation at a mesoscopic (aseveral tens of micrometers) scale whereas they are apparently homogeneous at a macroscopic scale. Although the mesoscopic structure of the niobate-clay binary colloid is advantageous to realize unusual photochemical functions, the structure itself has not been clearly demonstrated in real space. The present study investigated the structure of niobate-clay binary nanosheet colloids in detail. Four clay nanosheets (hectorite, saponite, fluorohectorite, and tetrasilisic mica) with different lateral sizes were compared. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) indicated lamellar ordering of niobate nanosheets in the binary colloid. The basal spacing of the lamellar phase was reduced by increasing the concentration of clay nanosheets, indicating the compression of the liquid crystalline niobate phase by the isotropic clay phase. Scattering and fluorescence microscope observations using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) demonstrated the phase separation of niobate and clay nanosheets in real space. Niobate nanosheets assembled into domains of several tens of micrometers whereas clay nanosheets were located in voids between the niobate domains. The results clearly confirmed the spatial separation of two nanosheets and the phase separation at a mesoscopic scale. Distribution of clay nanosheets is dependent on the employed clay nanosheets; the nanosheets with large lateral length are more localized or assembled. This is in harmony with larger basal spacings of niobate lamellar phase for large clay particles. Although three-dimensional compression of the niobate phase by the coexisting clay phase was observed at low clay concentrations, the basal spacing of niobate phase was almost constant irrespective of niobate concentrations at high clay concentrations, which was ascribed to competition of compression by clay phase and restoring of the niobate phase.

Although inorganic nanosheets prepared by exfoliation (delamination) of layered crystals have attracted great attention as 2D nanoparticles, in situ real space observations of exfoliated nanosheets in the colloidally dispersed state have not been conducted. In the present study, colloidally dispersed inorganic nanosheets prepared by exfoliation of layered niobate are directly observed with bright-field optical microscopy, which detects large nanosheets with lateral length larger than several micrometers. The observed nanosheets are not strictly flat but rounded, undulated, or folded in many cases. Optical trapping of nanosheets by laser radiation pressure has clarified their uneven cross-sectional shapes. Their morphology is retained under the relation between Brownian motion and optical trapping.

Although semiconductor photocatalysis has been investigated actively for a long time, control of dark processes successive to electron transfer from photocatalysts is almost unexplored compared with designing photocatalysts themselves. The present study proposes employment of clay particles as for controlling the dark processes independently of semiconductor photocatalyst particles. We employed niobate–clay binary nanosheet colloids, where colloidal niobate and clay nanosheets are spatially separated at a micrometer level. Niobate nanosheets worked as the semiconductor photocatalyst that released electrons upon UV excitation, and clay nanosheets worked as the turnout switch of the released electrons to determine their destination. When methylviologen (MV2+) molecules that accept the electrons released from niobate were adsorbed on clay nanosheets, reduction of MV2+ predominantly occurred, and hydrogen was little evolved from the colloid. When Pt nanoparticles were deposited on clay nanosheets, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution occurred because Pt loaded on the clay nanoparticles played a role of cocatalyst. When MV2+ and Pt were co-loaded on clay nanosheets, both of MV2+ reduction and hydrogen evolution occurred competitively. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution carried out by stirring the colloid sample was worse than that conducted without stirring, which indicated positive contribution of the spatial separation of photocatalytic niobate and cocatalytic clay nanosheets.

Inorganic nanosheets obtained by exfoliation of a layered crystal in water form colloidal liquid crystals, and their alignment can be controlled by an electric field. In order to realize the immobilization of the electrically aligned niobate nanosheets without external forces, an aqueous gelator, agar, is introduced to the niobate nanosheet system to utilize the thermosensitive sol-gel transition property of agar. Alignment of nanosheets in a niobate-agar system is performed by applying an electric field above the sol-gel transition temperature, and then, the sample is cooled down, followed by cooling below the transition temperature with the electric field turned off. The aligned structure is kept for more than 24 h after the removal of the electric field. The concentration of agar is a key parameter for both the orientation of nanosheets and the retention of the orientation.

Although hierarchical assemblies of colloidal particles add novel structure-based functions to systems, few local and on-demand colloidal structures have been developed. We have combined the colloidal liquid crystallinity of two-dimensional inorganic particles and laser radiation pressure to obtain a large hierarchical and local structure in a colloidal system. The scattering force of the laser beam converted the parallel nanosheet alignment to the direction of the incident laser beam. At the focal point, the nanosheet orientation depends on the electric field of the polarized laser beam. In contrast, a giant tree-ring-like nanosheet texture of more than 100 μm, and which is independent of the polarization direction, was organized at the periphery of the focal point. This organization resulted from a cooperative effect between the liquid-crystalline nanosheets, which indicates an effectiveness of optical manipulation to construct hierarchical colloidal structures with the aid of interparticle interactions.

Structural colouration observed in antimony phosphate nanosheet suspensions has been known for two decades, but the stability of their inner structures has not been a topic in colloidal nanosheet systems. In this study, we investigate the time evolution of structures in suspension using UV-visible spectrometry and small-angle X-ray scattering. Here, we report that antimony phosphate nanosheet systems re-organise their inner structures, especially at lower concentrations (isotropic or biphasic region), and that the basal spacing decreases with time after sample preparation, although the evolution speed depends on the sample concentration. The stability of the inner structure of the suspension is essential for their application as structural colour materials in sensors and colourants.

This research aims to develop a method for the amalgamation of graphene nanoplatelets in glass/epoxy composites. The poor interface bonding between the fiber and matrix is critical and hinders the full performance of the composites. Glass fabric and epoxy were used as reinforcement and matrix in the composite, respectively. Graphene nanoplatelets were utilized as an additional nano-materials filler for the composites. Glass/graphene/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites were fabricated via vacuum infusion molding. The new method of applying graphene nanoplatelets as secondary reinforcement in the composite was developed based on proper functionalization in the sonication process. The physical, tensile, flexural, and short beam interlaminar properties of fabricated composites were examined to analyze the method's effectiveness. The results showed that density decreased by around 5 %; however, thickness increased by around 34 % after introducing graphene nanoplatelets into the composites. The tensile strength and modulus of the composites declined by approximately 19 %, on the other hand, flexural strength and modulus increased by around 63.3 % and 8.3 %, respectively, after the addition of graphene nanoplatelets into the composites. Moreover, interlaminar shear strength of the composite was enhanced by approximately 50 %.

Among colloidal systems of inorganic nanosheets prepared by exfoliation of inorganic layered crystals, binary colloids of two different nanosheet species are important for their multicomponent and multiphase coexistence, which is applicable to new materials. Nevertheless, electric response of binary nanosheet colloids has scarcely been paid attention although that of single-component nanosheet colloids has recently been investigated. We report herein the electric alignment of aqueous binary nanosheet colloids of niobate K4Nb6O17 and synthetic fluorohectorite, both of which have large lateral sizes of a few micrometers. In the binary colloids, the niobate nanosheets respond to an applied AC electric voltage to be aligned in parallel to the electric field. Although the clay nanosheets also respond to an AC electric field in their single-component colloids, their alignment is basically suppressed in the binary colloids. However, combined optical microscope observations of bright-field, polarized, and fluorescence detections indicate that large clay platelets are partly involved in the aligning motion of the niobate nanosheets. As a result, some of the clay platelets are aligned in parallel to the electric field. Colloidal liquid crystallinity of the niobate nanosheets contribute to the alignment of the clay particles by incorporating the latter particles to the liquid crystalline domains of the former ones.

This paper presents an investigation of the effect of the graphene nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite. The composites were fabricated using vacuum infusing molding. Dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets was done using bath sonicator and mechanical stirring. The physical and mechanical properties were examined according to ASTM standards. Results showed that there was a significant improvement in tensile and flexural properties by the addition of 0.25% of graphene nanoplatelets in the glass/epoxy composite. Tensile strength and modulus were enhanced by 27.62 % and 41.26 %, respectively. Flexural strength and modulus have been improved by around 27.62 % and 41.26 %, respectively. Graphene platelets can be hybridized with glass/epoxy composite to improve the mechanical performance.

We report a versatile method for preparing a particulate composite based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) via a self-organized precipitation method. The particulate composite had a coreshell structure, and depending on the molecular weight of the PEG, two types of particulates could form: one with CNCs as the core and the other with CNCs as the shell.

Flax is the strongest natural fiber used as reinforcement for polymer-based composites due to its ecological properties, low specific gravity, renewability, biodegradability, recyclability besides its high mechanical properties. However, thermal properties of flax fibers depend on its chemical composition and structure, so it should be carefully controlled during the production process of composites, which affect the final product performance. A review of flax fiber-reinforced thermoset composites (FRTCs) and their hybrids is presented in the article, mainly focus on thermal performance, water absorption, and durability of the composites. The effects of filler materials hybridization and fiber’s chemical modification on the properties and performance of the FRTCs are also covered. Finally, key industrial applications and future possible research work based on the current understanding of FRTCs, and their hybrids also are addressed.

Flax is a natural fiber that possesses excellent specific properties, low density, safe to handle, eco-friendly, and easily available. These make it exceedingly popular and a potential candidate to replace synthetic reinforcements in polymer composite applications. The thermoset polymer is used for structural application due to its excellent mechanical and interface bonding properties compared to the thermoplastic polymer. Flax-based thermoset polymer composites are becoming popular among researchers for advanced industrial applications. This article is intended to offer a review of the main results presented in the literature on flax fiber-based polymer composites, focusing the attention on the fiber structure, chemical arrangement, physical and mechanical properties. Then, the mechanical performance of pure and hybrid flax fiber reinforced epoxy or polyester composites is comprehensively analyzed.

The decoration of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on layered structure of low carbonate NiAl-layered double hydroxide (NiAl-LDH) was conducted by a combination of an aqueous solution of zinc chloride and an aqueous suspension of NiAl-LDH under hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination at 250 °C for 6 h. A series of the products, ZnO/NiAl-LDH(x), where x was a Zn2+ content, were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, surface analysis, as well as UV–visible and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The slight shift of the reflection at around 11° as well as the appearance of two peaks at around 23° and 47° in the X-ray diffraction patterns, and the decrease of the vibration mode of CO32‐− (at 1359 cm−1) in Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed the deintercalation of CO32− on/in layered double hydroxide. The presence of the reflections due to zinc oxide at around 32°, 33° and 36° and transmission electron microscope images demonstrated the images of zinc oxide nanorods distributed on the external surface of the hexagonal plates of the layered double hydroxide, verified the formation of zinc oxide crystal in the products. The band gap energy value of the products was highly dependent on the amount of zinc oxide in the products that played an important role in the photodegradation enhancement of methyl orange in aqueous solution and the catalytic reusing performance.

The effect of hybridization of a clay fluorohectorite (FHT) nanosheet with a π-conjugated organic compound, α,β,γ,δ-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin p-toluenesulfonate (TMPyP), on its optical manipulation is investigated. Although the hybridized FHT is optically trapped essentially in the same manner as that of neat FHT, the hybridization with TMPyP allows for manipulation of FHT with lower laser intensity or a shorter period, or both. This is ascribed to the larger refractive index and polarizability of TMPyP compared with neat FHT.

Inorganic nanosheets obtained by exfoliation of layered crystals such as smectite-type clays have been actively investigated as building blocks of nanomaterials in the past 25 years. However, their colloidal systems were at the outside of such a research trend. At the beginning of 21st century, liquid crystalline behavior of colloidal nanosheets was recalled into academic studies, and then the materials chemistry of 'nanosheet liquid crystals' has been gradually developed. Many popular nanosheets have been registered at the library of liquid crystals. Nanosheet liquid crystals are rare examples of inorganic soft materials, whose properties are greatly different from their mother crystals due to their softness. A typical property of nanosheet liquid crystals is structural coloration reflecting long periodic lengths between nanosheets. Also, technical inventory of manipulating liquid crystalline nanosheets has been enriched as exemplified by electric alignment and optical manipulation. Hierarchical structures of liquid crystalline nanosheets up to mm-level lengths have been organized with appropriate combination of manipulating techniques.

Electrolyte-dependence of the macroscopic textures generated in the colloidal liquid crystals of niobate nanosheets 査読有り

Liquid crystalline aqueous colloids of inorganic nanosheets with thickness of 1 nm and lateral size of several micrometers were prepared from exfoliation of layered niobate, and they were hierarchically organized to generate macroscopic textures through the formation of sub-mm nanosheet domains as the secondary building blocks. The nanosheet domains were unidirectionally aligned with orthogonally applied gravity and electric field to generate macroscopic stripes along gravity in ideal cases as we reported previously [Phys Chem Chem Phys (2014) 16: 955–962]. However, other textures such as broken stripes, drops, and nets are also obtained. The generated textures were quantitatively evaluated by image analysis of polarized optical microscope images of the samples. Uniformity and homogeneity of the stripes were evaluated by using contrast of pixels in the longitudinal and transverse directions with respect to gravity. After dialyzing a colloid with electrolytes (∼ 10–3 mol L–1), the sample comes to form of stripes more easily and “good stripes” with lengthy and homogeneous nanosheet alignment were generated after dialyzing a nanosheet colloid with KCl. Measurements of pH and conductivity of the dialyzed samples indicated the presence of suitable pH and conductivity regions for the generation of stripes.

Optical manipulation of nanosheet liquid crystals prepared by exfoliation of inorganic layered crystals realizes local and on-demand orientation control of nanosheets. Although a tightly focused laser beam by using an objective lens with a high numerical aperture (NA) is typically employed for the optical manipulation to enhance the gradient force of an irradiated laser beam, the dominant driving force of the optical orientational manipulation of nanosheets has recently been attributed to the scattering force, suggesting that an objective lens with a high NA is not indispensible for the nanosheet manipulation. In this study, we carried out optical orientational manipulation of nanosheets using an objective lens with low NA, 0.4, and compared the results with those obtained by a lens with high NA, 1.2. Orientational manipulation was realized with both of the lenses, and the size of the manipulated domain using a lens with NA=0.4 was smaller than that obtained by using a lens with NA=1.2. The domain size increased with the irradiated laser power, reflecting the dominant contribution of scattering force to the optical manipulation of nanosheet liquid crystals.

Because inorganic nanosheets, such as clay minerals, are anisotropic, the manipulation of nanosheet orientation is an important challenge in order to realize future functional materials. In the present study, a novel methodology for nanosheet manipulation using laser radiation pressure is proposed. When a linearly polarized laser beam was used to irradiate a niobate (Nb6 O4-17 ) nanosheet colloid, the nanosheet was trapped at the focal point so that the in-plane direction of the nanosheet was oriented parallel to the propagation direction of the incident laser beam so as to minimize the scattering force. In addition, the trapped nanosheet was aligned along the polarization direction of the linearly polarized laser beam. Thus, unidirectional alignment of a nanosheet can be achieved simply by irradiation using a laser beam.

© 2018 SPIE. A 100 micrometer sized hierarchical structure consisting of nanosheet can be obtained at the focus of laser beam in nanosheet colloid. This large sized structure was obtained from the colloidal liquid crystallinity of two-dimensional inorganic particles and laser radiation pressure. The scattering force of the laser beam converted the parallel nanosheet alignment to the direction of the incident laser beam. A giant tree-ring-like nanosheet texture is independent of the polarization direction, was organized at the periphery of the focal point.

On-demand and local manipulation of exfoliated clay nanosheets in colloidal dispersions enables a variety of novel applications of clay-based materials. In this study, manipulation of a single fluorohectorite nanosheet by utilizing the radiation pressure of a tightly focused laser beam was demonstrated. When a linearly polarized continuous laser beam was irradiated to a fluorohectorite nanosheet, the nanosheet was oriented with its in-plane direction parallel to the propagation direction of the laser beam. Furthermore, the nanosheet edge was directed in parallel to the polarization direction of the laser beam. When the polarization direction of the laser beam was rotated, the nanosheet was rotated following the rotation of the polarization direction.

© 2017 Elsevier B.V.Inorganic nanosheets prepared by exfoliation of layered crystals of niobate form colloidal liquid crystals, and liquid crystalline niobate nanosheets are hierarchically organized to develop macroscopic textures. They are obtained through a two-stage process, which is growth of the liquid crystalline domains called tactoids induced by incubation and subsequent alignment of the tactoids with an electric field. Diverse macroscopic textures with sub-mm scale characteristic size are organized from niobate nanosheet liquid crystals by varying both of the tactoid growth and electric alignment processes. The tactoid growth is regulated by the nanosheet concentration and elapsed time for the incubation. Application of an AC electric field to the incubated samples turns the nanosheet alignment to the direction parallel to the field, resulting in developing various macroscopic textures. The texture depends on the nanosheet concentration; dendritic, net-like, and interdigitated textures are evolved at low, middle, and high nanosheet concentrations, respectively. Thickness of sample cell for the electric field application also influences the texture. The tactoid size is comparable to the characteristic length of the textures under the electric field even though the tactoid size exceeds the cell thickness. Continuous application of the electric field indicates temporal nature of the texture organization as the textures are gradually collapsed; larger electric voltages tend to generate and collapse the textures faster.

Colloidal nanosheets are obtained by exfoliation of inorganic layered crystals such as clay minerals in water. They form colloidal liquid crystals at high nanosheet concentrations due to their shape anisotropy. Liquid crystalline nanosheets can be aligned under external fields. For this purpose, electric field is advantageous owing to its facile instrumentation, controllability, quantitative reproducibility, and broad applicability. AC electric field is utilized for aligning liquid crystalline nanosheets because the samples are aqueous colloids of electrically charged particles. The 2D shape of nanosheets facilitates alignment of their longitudinal direction parallel to the electric field in many cases. When a colloid sample is incubated to grow liquid crystalline domains up to the size of sub-mm scale, hierarchical macroscopic structures are evolved under electric fields, where the grown domains play a role of secondary building blocks. The final structure varies depending on the relative direction of applied electric field and gravity. An electric field applied parallel to gravity gives a net-like assembly of the nanosheet domains, whereas orthogonal application of an electric voltage and gravity assembles nanosheets in stripes spanning over more than 1-mm length through unidirectional nanosheet alignment. Such flexible organization of nanosheet-based structures is a unique aspect of exfoliated nanosheets in colloidal liquid crystalline states.

© 2016 Elsevier B.V.Binary clay colloids prepared by mixing smectite and other particles can exhibit unusual properties based on physical and chemical interactions between the colloidal particles. We prepared a binary colloidal system of layered fluoroniobate (K2NbO3F) and synthetic hectorite (Laponite) particles and examined photoinduced electron transfer in the colloid to which electron accepting methylviologen (MV2 +) was added. Exfoliation and nanosheet formation of the fluoroniobate were not evidenced, but it was transformed in water to 3D crystalline species that was easily settled down. Addition of a large amount of hectorite suppressed the settlement of the fluoroniobate particles to stabilize the colloid for a few days. When MV2 + ions were introduced to the binary colloid, the organic species was adsorbed on the hectorite particles and electron transfer occurred from the fluoroniobate particles to the MV2 + ions upon UV irradiation. Addition of propylammonium ions to the system enhanced the yield and stability of the photoproduct while an optimal amount was found. This was ascribed to the scarifying hole scavenging by the propylammonium species although the photoinduced electron transfer can occur in its absence.

Recently, the hybridization of hydrogels with well-defined nanostructured inorganic materials is emerging as a promising and efficient technique to improve their properties. Newly developed hydrogels with superior properties and smart functions can achieve a great performance in the field of drug delivery systems, sensors, coatings, artificial organs, and chemical actuators for microfluidics and molecular robots. Here we briefly review recent advances in this emerging field.

Copyright © 2016 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.Recent reports have demonstrated the practical application of Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles toward environmental clean-up of radionuclide 137Cs. Herein, we prepared a large amount of PB nanoparticles by mixing both iron(III) chloride and sodium ferrocyanide hydrate as starting precursors. The obtained PB nanoparticles show a high surface area (440 m2 · g-1 ) and consequently an excellent uptake ability of Cs ions from aqueous solutions. The uptake ability of Cs ions into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPA) hydrogel is drastically increased up to 156.7 m2 · g-1 after incorporating our PB nanoparticles, compared to 30.2 m2 · g-1 after using commercially available PB. Thus, our PB-containing PNIPA hydrogel can be considered as an excellent candidate for the removal of Cs ions from aqueous solutions, which will be useful for the remediation of the nuclear waste.

© 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Here we prepare thermo-responsive hydrogel containing mesoporous silica (KIT-6) with high surface area. Our hybrid hydrogel is prepared by gelation of NIPAM monomer with mesoporous silica particles in presence of cross linker. Owing to the doped mesoporous silica, a large amount of guest molecules are adsorbed easily. With increase of temperature, the hybrid hydrogel shrinks to retard the release of guest molecules.

Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) was investigated in multicomponent aqueous suspensions composed of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)_3^<2+>, photocatalyst), methylviologen (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dication, MV^<2+>, electron acceptor), and ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA, sacrificial electron donor) together with particles of smectite-type clays, where Ru(bpy)_3^<2+> and MV^<2+> are present in excess compared with CEC of the clay minerals. Clays with different particle sizes - fluorohectorite (FH) and montmorillonite (Mont) with large particle sizes (>0.1μm), and hectorite (Hect) and saponite (Sapo) with small particle sizes (〜30nm) - were examined, and the PET reaction proceeded in all of the suspensions to yield methylviologen radical cation (MV^<+・>) as the product. However, the difference in the clay particle size gave different product distribution; the large-size clays dominantly gave MV^<+・> dimers whereas the small-size clays mainly produced MV^<+・> monomers similarly to a homogeneous aqueous solution. Also, the large-size clays more stabilized the MV^<+・> species than the small-size ones. These results evidenced contribution of the clay-water interfaces to the reaction.
