17 世紀イギリスで出版された劇作古版本のテクストと、印刷に用いられた活字や紙に関する総合的な調査を行い、それぞれ劇作古版本の出版に関わった作家、編集者、出版者、および印刷者たちが具体的にどのような先行作品をモデルとして、何を目的に、どのような編集作業を行ったかという、劇作編集の確立の過程を明らかにする。

The Kodama Memorial Library at Meisei University contains one of the world's most important Shakespeare collections. This article introduces the Meisei collection to Shakespearians internationally, describing the history and scope of the collection, and the website reproducing copies of some of its Shakespeare and Jonson folios. The article examines examples of Meisei copies of early editions from the perspective of bibliography and book history. These case studies highlight the importance of individual copies in the collection in preserving information about publishing and ownership from the early modern period to our own and the significance of the Meisei collection itself.

The Fourth Folio of Shakespeare (F4) was published with no printer’s name in 1685 by Henry Herringman. The main text of F4 plays is divided into three sections by separate sequences of signatures and pagination as well as typographical differences. The variations have led scholars to believe that the three sections were printed at three different presses. In 1951, Fredson Bowers inferred Robert Roberts’ involvement in printing the ‘Comedies’ section from ornamental evidence. I have identified the printer of the third section as John Macocke by examining damaged types found in F4 and other books printed by Macocke. While demonstrating the validity of my previous research, I further intend to explore the network of the printers who were involved in the printing of F4 of Shakespeare.

While the First and Second Folios of Shakespeare carry their printers’ names in their imprints, those of the following two folios, the third and fourth, are left unsigned by their printers. The printers of the Third Folio were inferred as Roger Daniel, Alice Warren and John Hayes by Harry Farr in as early as 1934 from their ornaments used in the book. Such attempts as to identify the printer based on the ornamental types used in the ‘Comedies’ section of the Fourth Folio (F4) have also been made by C. William Miller and Fredson Bowers. While attributing the printing of the F4 ‘Comedies’ to Robert Roberts, Bowers warns in 1951 that ‘the shop which produced the third section [of F4] will perhaps never be identified until we know everything there is to be learned about seventeenth-century types.’ The present paper will attempt to identify the printer who produced the third section of F4 beginning with Timon of Athens and the cancel title page of the reissue of the edition. The relationship between this unknown printer and the publisher, Henry Herringman, will hopefully reveal that the former was the lead printer of F4 who made the decision to leave its imprint unsigned.
