Carbon nanowalls (CNWs) are densely packed multilayer graphene sheets oriented perpendicular to a substrate. We developed a simple method for synthesizing CNWs without hydrocarbon gas. It was found that CNWs are formed when carbon plasma, generated by the impact of argon plasma produced by a microwave generator on a carbon source, strikes a substrate. The quality, size, and interlayer distance of the multilayer graphene constituting the CNWs were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. We attempted electrodeposition of Cs from an aqueous solution into CNWs and successfully adsorbed Cs into them. The result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement indicated that Cs was adsorbed between the layers of graphene that constituted the CNWs. We also found that increasing the electrodeposition time resulted in qualitatively greater adsorption of Cs between the graphene layers. This adsorption effect may be beneficial for applications such as purifying wastewater containing the radioactive isotope 137Cs.

The effects of isothermal annealing on the self-assembled nanostructures of spinel manganese oxide ZnMnGaO4 were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The checkerboard nanostructures and zigzag nanostructures (named “Sierra” nanostructures) coexisted owing to the chemical phase separation of Mn3+ and Ga3+ ions by isothermal annealing at 575 °C. It was observed that the checkerboard nanostructures were dominant in short-time annealing and that the volume fraction of the Sierra nanostructures became more prominent as the annealing period increase. The interdiffusion of Mn3+ and Ga3+ is indicated to play an important role in gaining the total energy of the system by the reduction in the local strain caused by the formation of nanostructures. These results provide further insights into the fabrication of distinct types of nanostructures in complex transition-metal compounds.

Improper ferroelectricity and canted ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetically ordered hexagonal ferrites with A2-type spin configuration have been intensely studied due to their potential for room-temperature multiferroicity with strong magnetoelectric couplings. However, the subtle interplay between the magnetic structure and trimer structural distortion, which is a critical ingredient for ferroelectricity, has not been clearly verified in experiments due to the lack of control over trimer distortion. In this study, we report on Lu0.6In0.4FeO3, which exhibits weaker trimer distortion primarily related to the smaller tilting of the FeO5 bipyramids. The reduced vertical displacement of the equatorial oxygen of FeO5 located at the center of the trimer lowers the magnitude of the in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector component, resulting in the absence of canted ferromagnetism with the planar A1-type spin configuration, rather than the canted A2-type observed in other hexagonal ferrites. Our findings demonstrate that the degree of trimer distortion plays an important role in determining the spin configuration in related hexagonal systems.

In this work, ball-milled iron (Fe)-based nanocrystalline alloy sheets and obtaining platelet particles are used to effectively utilize the end material and apply it to a soft magnetic composite. The instrumental analysis results reveal that, although a microstrain is introduced into the nanocrystalline α-Fe grains in the achieved alloy powder, the amorphous part filled among the grains experiences almost no change. The ball-milling treatment greatly increases the coercive force of the pulverized nanocrystalline sheet. Although the coercive force of the alloy powder decreases after the heat treatment, it remained approximately 10 times higher than that of the heat-Treated alloy sheet without the ball-milling treatment, even after the heat treatment. The magnetic process of the ball-milled and post-Annealed nanocrystalline alloy powder is discussed based on the results of the synchrotron radiation X-ray analysis and transmission electron microscopy with the Lorentz technique.

To realize the effective utilization of the end material and its application to a soft magnetic composite, Fe-based nanocrystalline alloy sheets were ball-milled, and platelet particles were obtained, in this work. Instrumental analyses revealed that although a micro strain was introduced into the nanocrystalline α-Fe grains in the achieved alloy powder, almost no changes were found in the amorphous part filled among the grains. The ball-milling treatment greatly increased the coercive force of the pulverized nanocrystalline sheet. Although the coercive force of the alloy powder decreased after the heat treatment, the coercive force remained to be approximately 10 times higher than that of the heat-treated alloy sheet without the ball-milling treatment, even after the heat treatment. The magnetic process of the ball-milled and heat treated nanocrystalline alloy powder will be discussed in detail in the conference based on the obtained results and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy.

遷移金属化合物における自己組織化した異方的ナノ材料は，その物性の多様性と構造制御の観点から注目を集めている．通常，異方的ナノ構造作製のためには，試料作製条件の調整や高温処理が必要である．一方，スピネル型マンガン酸化物におけるナノメートルスケールでのスピノーダル分解を利用したナノ構造作製は，比較的低温での単純な熱処理のみで可能である．本稿では，磁性スピネル(Co,Mn,Fe)3O4において行われた研究例を紹介する．本系は遷移金属酸化物にもかかわらず，375℃という低い温度での熱処理によりMn-richな正方晶ナノドメインとMn-poorな立方晶ナノドメインが形成される．これらのナノドメインが複雑に相関し合うことでチェッカーボード型ナノ構造やラメラ型ナノ構造が出現し，磁性に影響を及ぼす．

The nano-size effects of high-Tc cuprate superconductor La2−xSrxCuO4 with x = 0.20 are investigated using X-ray diffractometry, Transmission electron microscopy, and muon-spin relaxation (µSR). It is investigated whether an increase in the bond distance of Cu and O atoms in the conducting layer compared to those of the bulk state might affect its physical and magnetic properties. The µSR measurements revealed the slowing down of Cu spin fluctuations in La2−xSrxCuO4 nanoparticles, indicating the development of a magnetic correlation at low temperatures. The magnetic correlation strengthens as the particle size reduces. This significantly differs from those observed in the bulk form, which show a superconducting state below Tc. It is indicated that reducing the particle size of La2−xSrxCuO4 down to nanometer size causes the appearance of magnetism. The magnetism enhances with decreasing particle size.

Temperature dependence of charge-ordered crystal structures and domain structures in RFe2O4 (R: Y and Lu) was investigated by energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy, combined with conventional transmission electron microscopy. The presence of three-dimensional to two-dimensional charge ordering transition were observed in both YFe2O4 and LuFe2O4 on heating. Furthermore, real-space images obtained with the energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy revealed that YFe2O4 has less anisotropic nanometer-scale charge-ordered domains than LuFe2O4. These findings in RFe2O4 indicate the importance of the interchange interactions between Fe-O bilayers in addition to those within bilayers in the structural phase transitions associated with charge ordering in this system.

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd NbBiCh3 (Ch = S, Se) misfit-layered superconducting single crystals were successfully grown using a CsCl/KCl flux for the first time. The obtained crystals had a well-developed habit parallel to the c-plane with a typical width of 1–2 mm and thickness of 10–40 μm. The superconducting transition temperatures with zero resistivity of NbBiS3 single crystals obtained from the nominal composition of Nb0.9Bi1.2S3 was 0.31 K, and that value of the NbBiSe3 single crystals grown from the stoichiometry composition (NbBiSe3) was 2.3 K. Sharp decreases in electric resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at approximately 3 K suggested a possible superconducting transition temperature of NbBiSe3. The normal-state anisotropy values of grown NbBiS3 and NbBiSe3 single crystals were 2.2–2.4 and 1.5–1.6, respectively.

KGaA, Weinheim Ultrasensitive and sustainable near-infrared (NIR)-emitting piezoluminescence is observed from noncentrosymmetric and ferroelectric-phase Sr3Sn2O7 doped with rare earth Nd3+ ions. Sr3Sn2O7:Nd3+ (SSN) with polar A21am structure is demonstrated to emit piezoluminescence of wavelength of 800–1500 nm at microstrain levels, which is enhanced by the ferroelectrically polarized charges in the multipiezo material. These discoveries provide new research opportunities to study luminescence properties of multipiezo and piezo-photonic materials, and to explore their potential as novel ultrasensitive probes for deep-imaging of stress distributions in diverse materials and structures including artificial bone and other implanted structures (in vivo, in situ, etc).

Distinct nanostructures in (Co,Mn,Fe)3O4 were investigated using X-ray diffraction techniques combined with transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy, as well as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The size of the checkerboard nanostructure increased with annealing, followed by the appearance of lamellar nanostructures comprising different types of platelike nanodomains because of nanoscopic spinodal decomposition of Mn and Fe ions. Remarkable local strain relaxation at the nanoscale associated with the domain size is suggested to play an important role in the stabilization of these checkerboard and lamellar nanostructures.

Crystallographic and morphologic features of quadruple and double superstructures in Bi1-xSmxFeO3 with 0≤x≤0.40 were investigated by x-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The presence of a quadruple superstructure accompanied by antiferroic ionic displacements was found near the morphotropic phase boundary between the R3c phase (0<x<0.10) and the Pnma phase (0.25≤x≤0.40). The quadruple superlattice phase coexists with a ferroelectric R3c phase at x=0.15. These superstructures were found to originate from the freezing of multiple phonon modes related to transverse wave ionic displacements. These findings provide further insight towards understanding the complexity of rare-earth-doped BiFeO3.

The charged domain walls in ferroelectric materials exhibit intriguing physical properties. We examine herein the charged-domain-wall structures in Ca3−xSrxTi2O7 using transmission electron microscopy. When viewed along the [001] axis, the wavy charged domain walls are observed over a wide range (>5 µm). In contrast, short charged-domain-wall fragments (from 10 to 200 nm long) occur because they are intercepted and truncated by the conventional 180° domain walls. These results reveal the unusual charged domain structures in Ca3−xSrxTi2O7 and will be useful for understanding their formation process.
