    Calcium silicate is the basic component of bioactive materials that directly bond to living bone (bone-bonding property) in the body environment because calcium silicate can easily form a hydroxyapatite layer on its surface after exposure to body fluids. The organic modification of calcium silicate ceramics is expected to improve their physicochemical properties. Organic modifications of layered inorganic substances have been studied to allow drug loading and sustained release through structural changes. However, few studies have investigated the effect of organic modifications on drug-release carriers. In this study, layered calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) prepared via a hydrothermal process was chemically modified with alkyl groups using alkoxysilane. In addition, the loading behavior of the antibiotic levofloxacin was quantitatively analyzed. Structural analysis of the synthesized samples indicated that the interlayer distance and amount of organic content in C-S-H increased with increasing carbon chain length and concentration of alkoxysilane. Levofloxacin was successfully incorporated into the modified C-S-H. It has been suggested that drug incorporation occurs mainly via surface adsorption rather than intercalation into the interlayer.

    Zirconium is used clinically as a material for hard-tissue repair because it has excellent corrosion resistance, low magnetic susceptibility, and low cytotoxicity. Bone-bonding ability is required to stably fix zirconium implants in bone, and anodization in a fluoride solution has been proposed as a method to achieve this. Because the corrosion reaction rate and surface crystalline phase change according to the fluoride concentration, it is assumed that the fluoride concentration in the electrolyte will affect bone bonding and mechanical properties. However, few studies have investigated this. In this study, zirconium was anodized in an electrolyte containing 0–1 M NH4F, and apatite formation in a simulated body fluid was investigated for in vitro evaluation of bone bonding. Adhesion of the apatite layer to the substrate was also investigated. Differences in the NH4F concentration had a negligible effect on the apatite formation ability of zirconium. However, adhesion was greatly affected by the fluorine concentration, with an intermediate concentration of 0.1 M resulting in the best adhesion. Adhesion was correlated with surface roughness of the anodized surface.

    <p>Silicate-based ceramics have been used to repair bone because they are able to form bone-like apatite upon reaction with body fluids, and to bond directly to bone via the apatite layer. Organic–inorganic hybrids that comprise Ca<sup>2+</sup> and organic polymers with Si–OH groups, i.e., the basic composition that induces apatite formation, are expected to have mechanical properties similar to those of natural bone. The authors have found that hybrids of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) with added calcium salts form apatite in simulated body fluid (SBF). However, the hybrid takes more than 1 week to prepare. In the present study, the authors synthesized hybrids with various MPS/(MPS + HEMA) ratios by visible light-induced photopolymerization, and investigated their ability to form apatite in SBF and their mechanical properties. Bulk hybrids were obtained within 3 days at any MPS/(MPS + HEMA) ratio, and they formed apatite in SBF within 3 days. The tensile strength of a hybrid with an MPS/(MPS + HEMA) molar ratio of 0.2 or less was approximately 0.2 MPa, and tended to decrease as the MPS content increased. It was noted that the strength increased up to 2.9 MPa when <i>N</i>,<i>N</i>-dimethyl-<i>p</i>-toluidine was not added.</p>

    <p>Octacalcium phosphate (OCP), which has a layered structure composed of an apatitic layer and a hydrated layer, is a precursor of hydroxyapatite (HAp). Although the topotactic transformation of OCP to HAp is a well-known phenomenon, its mechanism remains unclear. In this study, to clarify the role of the OCP hydrated layer in the mentioned transformation, we investigated the behavior of the transformation of OCP with hydrated layers of different thicknesses to HAp under hydrothermal conditions. We used three types of samples: plain OCP (Pure-OCP), OCP with incorporated succinate ions (Suc-OCP), and OCP with incorporated suberate ions (Sub-OCP). We found that all three OCP types transformed topotactically into HAp. The order of reactivity was Sub-OCP > Suc-OCP > Pure-OCP, which corresponds to the thickness of the hydrated layer. Since the transformation involves a compositional change, our finding implies that the hydrated layer acts as a diffusion (mass transfer) passage for dicarboxylate ions and hydrogen phosphate ions located within it, which move outside the crystal during the topotactic transformation. Our results thus contribute to a better understanding of the topotactic transformation mechanism of OCPs to HAp.</p>
