    Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming not only network operations but also the fundamental role and design principles of communication networks. Standards organizations, such as the ITU-T, are promoting the concept of AI-native networks, where AI is integrated not as an add-on functionality but as a core component of network design, operation, and control. In industry, network operators and equipment vendors are also actively developing technologies for autonomous network operation and optimization using AI.
    This talk will introduce the speaker’s research and development activities toward autonomous networks, including AI-driven fault detection, root-cause analysis, and network control. It will then broaden the discussion from “AI for Networks” (using AI to improve network operation) to “Networks for AI” (considering how networks should evolve to support distributed AI systems and AI agents). While conventional networks have primarily served as infrastructures for delivering content and connecting applications, future networks must interconnect distributed AI models, computing resources, agents, and data. This talk will discuss the key technical challenges arising from this transition and outline future research directions for networking in the AI-native era.
