Majority of spacecrafts rely on solar power as the main source of energy. The search for a lightweight and cost-efficient energy source with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) led to the development of organic-inorganic metal halide Perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this paper, the performance of PSCs with different hole-transport material (HTM) prepared for in-orbit demonstration mission onboard CubeSats are compared under simulated space environment such as thermal cycling stress, high-vacuum, UV radiation and vibration. Results show that even though organic and inorganic HTM display superior initial PCE, Carbon HTM PSCs trumps them in terms of stability and is more practical for use in space. The paper also discusses the satellite mission and developed hardware for the first demonstration of Perovskite solar cells on-board a satellite to gather in-orbit information on the performance of Perovskite solar cells in low-earth orbit and how the ground test results would be verified.

To protect a satellite from accidents due to spacecraft charging, Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) is developing a device called ELFs-Charm, which stands for ELectron-emitting Film for Spacecraft CHARging Mitigation. Electron emission from ELFs-Charm was already confirmed in Polar Earth Orbit in 2012 via flight experiment onboard HORYU-II. As a next step, we are considering the practical operation for spacecraft charging mitigation. The present emission level is not enough to increase the satellite potential. We focus our efforts on improving two properties, charging property and the emission threshold. The charging property is measured by how well the differential voltage between the ELFs-charm insulator surface and the satellite chassis increases. The emission threshold is measured by the differential voltage when the electron emission starts. This paper reports the laboratory experimental results to measure the two properties of various samples. The sample made of fluorin resin coating had a good combination of the charging property and the emission threshold that makes it possible to emit electron under realistic ambient electron current density in orbit.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate cyclic thermal loading on microscopic damage progress and associated degradation of mechanical properties of CFRP which is used in antenna's radial ribs of new radio astronomy satellite. Thermal cycle test was conducted on the CFRP specimen and specimen was observed to characterize microscopic damages. Then, three point bending test were conducted to evaluate the bending modulus. Thermal stress analysis was also conducted to evaluate temperature gradient during thermal cycles. During thermal cycle tests, transverse crack occurred. On the other hand, bending modulus did not degrade.

In this study we aim to estimate damage in materials which is used in antenna's radial ribs of new radio astronomy satellite. The materials are carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) because of their high-specific strength. In space environment, cyclic temperature change is loaded on a structure due to sunshine and eclipse. As a result, severe thermal stress occurs and causes damages in CFRP. The purpose of this study is to evaluate thermal fatigue effects on microscopic damage progress in CFRP. We also conducted finite element analyses to discuss the mechanism of damage behavior.
