  • TDMA-based scheduling for multi-hop wireless sensor networks with 3-egress gateway linear topology

    We have studied packet transmission scheduling on multi-hop wireless sensor networks with 3-egress gateway linear topology, called Y-shaped topology. In every one cycle period, each node generates and forwards data packets that are bounded for either of the gateways at edges. In this paper, we focus on centrally-managed Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)-based slot allocations and design a packet transmission scheduling framework combining with the basic redundant transmission to reduce and recover packet losses. On each of three types of path models to cover all possible routing on Y-shaped topology, we efficiently derive a global static time-slot allocation. The derived time-slot allocation exactly maximizes the probability that all packets are successfully delivered to one of the gateways within one cycle period, which cannot be achieved by existing scheduling schemes.

  • Locating High-loss Links for OpenFlow Networks by Multiple Hosts to Probe Packets

    We previously proposed a measurement framework for OpenFlow-based networks to promptly locate high-loss links with a small load incurred by the measurement on both the data-plane (e.g., the number of transmissions of probe packets on each link) and the control-plane (e.g., the number of accesses to switches) until locating all high-loss links. One of key components is the multicast measurement route of probe packets traversing all links in both directions. However, the previously proposed Eulerian cycle-based measurement route scheme called the backbone-and-branch tree (BBT) that uses only a single measurement host (MH) may build a too long measurement path in a large network, resulting in a low measurement accuracy and an intolerance to very high-loss, e.g., failure, links located in upstream of a measurement path. Therefore, in this paper, we newly propose an enhancement of the BBT with multiple MHs, called BBT-mMH, which can control the measurement path lengths to maintain an acceptable measurement accuracy with a small overhead on both the control-plane and data-plane. The numerical simulation demonstrates potential benefits of our proposal.

  • Effective route scheme of multicast probing to locate high-loss links in openflow networks

    The prevalence of cloud computing and contents delivery networking has led to demand for OpenFlow-based centrally-managed networks with dynamic and flexible traffic engineering. Maintaining a high level of network service quality requires detecting and locating high-loss links. Therefore, in this paper, a measurement framework is proposed to promptly locate all high-loss links with a minimized load on both data-plane and control-plane in-curred by the measurement, which assumes only standard OpenFlow functions. It combines an active measurement by probing multicast packets along a designed route and a passive measurement by collecting flow-stats of the probing flow at selected switch ports in an appropriate sequential order to access switches. In particular, by designing the measurement route based on the backbone-and-branch tree (BBT) route scheme, the measurement accuracy and the measurement overhead (the number of accesses to switches until locating all high-loss links) can be balanced. The numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposal.

  • Transmission scheduling for tandemly-connected sensor networks with heterogeneous packet generation rates

    A tandemly-connected multi-hop wireless sensor network model is studied. Each node periodically generates packets in every cycle and relays the packets in a store-and-forward manner on a lossy wireless link between two adjacent nodes. To cope with a considerable number of packet losses, we previously proposed a packet transmission scheduling framework, in which each node transmits its possessing packets multiple times according to a static time-slot allocation to recover or avoid packet losses caused either by physical conditions on links or by interference of simultaneous transmissions among near-by nodes. However, we assumed that the packet generation rate is identical over all nodes, which is not always realistic. Therefore, in this paper, we enhance our work to the case of heterogeneous packet generation rates. We derive a static time-slot allocation maximizing the probability of delivering all packets within one cycle period. By using an advanced wireless network simulator, we show its effectiveness and issues to be solved.

  • P4-based implementation and evaluation of adaptive early packet discarding scheme

    Software Defined Networking (SDN) has attracted widespread attention due to its architectural challenges to flexibly and dynamically control network switches and packets traversing them. Recently the programmability on the data plane becomes an active area of research. For example, Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) was introduced as a language to enable packet-level processing by the data plane and supported by not only on software but on a variety of hardware of switches and devices. Motivated by this shift, we provide a P4-based implementation of the MTQ/QTL that is a dynamic advanced Active Queue Management (AQM) scheme previously proposed by the authors. In this paper, we report a P4-based MTQ/QTL implementation and its evaluation on software switches by Mininet emulator. Through the emulation, we verify that the effects of MTQ/QTL to benefit delay-sensitive application flows are similar to the previous simulation results, which suggests that the data plane programming using P4 in advanced AQM is feasible and promising as a next generation SDN enabler.
