Even in REBa<inf>2</inf>Cu<inf>3</inf>O<inf>y</inf> (REBCO) films, which exhibit high critical current density (J<inf>c</inf>) under low-temperature and high-magnetic-field conditions, their performance deteriorates significantly at high-temperatures because of pronounced flux creep induced by thermal agitation. This degradation is particularly pronounced in thin superconducting films, as the thickness constrains the pinning correlation length. In this study, we examined the effect of YBCO film thickness on J<inf>c</inf> within the range of 0.94 to 3.7 μm. While some variations were observed depending on crystal orientation, thicker superconducting layers demonstrated a smaller reduction in J<inf>c</inf> with increasing magnetic field in high-temperature regions, resulting in superior J<inf>c</inf> values under high-temperature and high-magnetic-field conditions. Moreover, the apparent pinning potential U<inf>0</inf><sup>*</sup>, determined from magnetization relaxation measurements, was larger for thicker films in these conditions, indicating that U<inf>0</inf><sup>*</sup> is influenced by the thickness of the superconducting layer. These findings are further supported by the flux creep flow model analysis. Collectively, these results suggest that not only introducing strong pinning forces but also increasing the thickness of the superconducting layer is an effective strategy for enhancing performance near liquid nitrogen temperatures.

The critical current of a coaxial cable made of Bi-2223 tapes was investigated to survey underlying problems, especially for the resistive voltage caused by current transfer, for the standardization of test method of the critical current of superconducting AC power cables. Five voltage taps were attached on the copper sheath of 80 mm long, which is used as a part of the current lead, on both ends for the inner conductor layer and outer shield layer. The current transfer was theoretically examined especially for the outer shield layer of a simple structure. The resistive component in the measured voltage was calculated as a function of the position of the voltage tap, and it can be shown that the critical current is correctly obtained using the electric field criterion after subtracting the resistive component, as is usually done in experiments. These results are compared with the observed results.

The Gargantua test station is capable of delivering a direct current of 4800 A at a voltage of 10 V. It is designed for acquiring the dc voltage-current characteristic of high-temperature superconducting power cables operating at 77.3 K in liquid nitrogen. The goal is to estimate their critical current. The standardization of this dc characterization is a prerequisite for the adoption of this promising technology by power grid operators. This document reports on the experimental setup and the subsequent measurements carried out on a high-temperature superconducting power cable manufactured by Sumitomo and tested as part of the international round robin test for the IEC Technical Committee 90 Superconductivity.

Ten institutes from six countries participated in an international round-robin test to evaluate the critical current of a superconducting power cable made of Bi-2223 tapes. The cable design featured a two-layer inner core conductor and a single-layer outer shield conductor. The shield layer measured approximately 40 mm in diameter, and the cable length was 2.0 meters. To eliminate the influence of resistive voltage drops from current transfer, voltage taps for measurement were positioned at a sufficient distance from the current terminals. The critical current was determined using the resistive method with the electric field criterion of 1.0 μV/cm. Additionally, the <italic>n</italic> -value, an optional parameter reflecting the current-voltage (<italic>I</italic>-<italic>V</italic>) characteristics, was extracted from the <italic>I</italic>-<italic>V</italic> curve within an electric field range of 0.1 to 1.0 μV/cm. A detailed uncertainty analysis was conducted for both the critical current and the <italic>n</italic> -value. Finally, the paper discusses the potential for standardization of the employed resistive measurement method.

The critical current of the core and shield of a 2.1 m long, 40 mm diameter Bi-2223 HTS coaxial cable was measured as part of an International Round Robin organised by Japan involving several international laboratories. In Durham, we found using a 100 μVm-1 criterion and an 8 minute trace time that Ic of the core and shield were 4386 A and 4143 A and the n-values were 19.6 and 14.4 respectively. 8 minute trace times were found to be a practical approximation of steady state conditions, with critical current values 0.5% and 1.2% larger than values obtained using 2 minute trace times, and n-values not significantly different to 2 minute trace values. Two minute trace time data were compared with equivalent data from other participating labs and excellent agreement was found: Ic was 0.6% and 1.5% larger for the core and shield respectively. The E-field range has a significant effect on the n-value measurements, which varied between groups. Good agreement between the participants for the shield was found for electric fields below 100 μVm-1, although larger n-values were found at higher electric fields at Durham and some other laboratories. The polarity of the current and the proximity of the return power cable were demonstrated to have negligible effect (< 0.1%) on the Ic measurements. Removing conductive and ferromagnetic materials that were part of Durham's experimental set-up increased Ic by < 1%. An intrinsic trace time dependency was found for Ic for trace times of less than 8 minutes that we attribute to the time required for fluxons to equilibrate with the underlying pinning landscape in a changing net magnetic field.

High-temperature superconducting REBCO tapes are expected to be applied to next-generation magnets for their high current density. One of their problems in the magnet application is the magnetic field instability caused by the decay of magnetization due to the shielding current caused by the tape shape. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the magnetization relaxation of REBCO tapes for the magnet design. In this study, we evaluated the magnetization relaxation of commercial REBCO tapes with and without APCs from Fujikura, SuperPower, and SuperOx in a wide temperature and field range. As a result, at low temperatures below 20K, there was negligible change, but at medium and above temperatures, the change due to the introduction of APC was different for each providers. By discussing the temperature dependence based on the flux creep model and the double kink excitation model, we explained why magnetization relaxation occurs, which is necessary for magnet design.

The Japanese national project started on standardization of the test method of the DC critical current of superconducting cables. A round robin test of critical current measurement is carried out to survey underlying problems for the standardization. The sample cables are made of Bi-2223 tapes and the inner core conductor has two layers and the outer shield conductor is composed of a single layer. The diameter of the shield layer is about 40 mm and the length of the cable is 2.00 m. The critical current was determined by the electric field criterion of 1 μV/cm. The n value is also measured for the inner core and the outer shield conductor. Three institutes participated in the test for two sample cables. The obtained experimental relative standard deviation for the critical current at 77.30 K is in the range of 0.2 to 1.3%, and is sufficiently small. Hence, it can be said that the present method that is widely used is suitable as a standard test method. On the other hand, the experimental relative standard deviation of the value is in the range of 2.8 to 18.6%, which is relatively large. This is caused by the measurements done at different temperatures.

In this study, we designed a power cable based on the longitudinal magnetic field (LMF) effect using an iterative approximation method. An evaluation of the cable shows that it is more efficient than conventional-design power cables. A cable with four inner layers and four shield layers and a maximum winding angle of 30 had a current capacity of more than 10 kA. Based on calculation results, we fabricated a 2-m-long LMF power cable and a conventional-design power cable. Experimental results show that the proposed power cable can carry more current (8.8% more current per tape and 18% more current overall) than a conventional-design power cable due to the LMF effect. These results well agree with the theoretical calculation results.

© 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. The high upper critical field and low anisotropy of the 122-type iron-based superconductor BaFe2As2 makes it promising for use in superconducting high field magnets. However, its critical current density (J c) in high magnetic fields needs to be further improved. Here we show that for the film prepared by pulsed laser deposition method by controlling the deposition parameters (higher substrate temperature and lower growth rate), the crystallinity of BaFe2(As0.66P0.33)2 (Ba122:P) matrix is improved while maintaining a high density of incoherent BaZrO3 (BZO) nanoparticles (NPs) which together lead to significantly increased self field J c. Our Ba122:P nanocomposite films also exhibit increased in-field J c, reduced angular anisotropy of J c and reduced detrimental effects of thermal fluctuations (creep rate) over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic field strength. The BZO NP doped Ba122:P films show high in-field J c over 2.1 MA cm-2 even at 4 K and 9 T (μ 0 H||c), which is significantly higher than that of standard Ba122:P films and conventional alloy superconducting wires. To understand the contribution of the various pinning centers, we applied a simple model, which was developed for cuprates, to Ba122:P film with all the parameters used derived by fitting to a limited set of experimental data (no free parameters) such that temperature, angle and field properties at other experimental conditions are then calculated. This simple model fits very well to the experimental results in these two very different material systems. We discuss the effectiveness of natural defect and BZO NPs on the ratio of J c to the depairing current density. The superconducting properties for 122-type iron-based superconductors obtained through this work are considered promising for high-field applications.

Theoretical estimation of the upper limit of critical current density by flux pinning in superconductors under the influence of kinetic energy 査読有り

The upper limit of critical current density by the flux pinning mechanism is theoretically investigated by taking into account the influence of kinetic energy. The upper limit is estimated to be 67% of the depairing current density in the London limit, which is about 23% higher than the estimation by Tinkham. The reason for the higher value is attributed to the enhancement of the order parameter that reduces the kinetic energy caused by the current. The possibility of such a strong flux pinning is discussed for nano-rods introduced to REBCO coated conductors.

© 2019 The Japan Society of Applied Physics. The depairing current density in superconductors is theoretically investigated for magnetization and transport currents. It is found that the depairing current densities in both cases are higher than those predicted by Tinkham. One of the reasons for the higher current densities is that those are obtained at the transition point to the normal state, while Tinkham obtained in the superconducting state far from the transition boundary. Another reason is that the order parameter is larger than the equilibrium value, which contributes not only directly to a higher current density but also to a lower kinetic energy due to the current.

Consideration on appearance and disappearance of energy in superconductors during change in external magnetic field 査読有り

When flux lines are displaced in a superconductor upon an increase in external magnetic field, the energy penetrating the superconductor is larger than the increase in magnetic energy. In some cases, the energy coming out of a superconductor is larger than the decrease in magnetic energy when the magnetic field is decreased, indicating the appearance of energy. These differences between the penetrating energy and the change in magnetic energy can be explained as a work done by the driving force against the pinning force that determines the magnetic flux distribution in the superconductor. The disappeared energy is dissipated or absorbed as an increase in the pinning energy. This indicates that the Maxwell theory is comprehensive also for electromagnetic phenomena in superconductors. The displacement of flux lines is also examined for the force-free state established in a current-carrying superconductor in a parallel magnetic field. A similar difference in energy suggests the existence of a generalized driving force, i.e., a driving torque, since the Lorentz force is zero in this state. This clearly shows that the flux cutting event cannot be realized, since it is based on the magnetic interaction and the penetrating energy cannot be absorbed.

The improvement of critical current properties of REBa2Cu3O7-x (REBCO) coated conductors by introducing artificial pinning centers (APCs) is examined with respect to the field-angle anisotropy, high-field performance and relaxation property with time. Nano-rods along the -axis introduced by PLD method and isotropic nano-particles introduced by TFA-MOD method are treated. The theoretical analysis is also shown to understand the effect of APCs quantitatively. The effects of superconducting layer thickness that influences the high-field performance and relaxation property are also discussed. It is shown that the upper critical field, which is another important factor to determine the high-field property, can be improved by introduction of APCs through electron scattering at interfaces with the superconducting matrix. The optimum critical current property can be obtained by properly designing the morphology and number density of APCs and the superconducting layer thickness.

Tuning nanoparticle size for enhanced functionality in perovskite thin films deposited by metal organic deposition 査読有り

Because of pressing global environmental challenges, focus has been placed on materials for efficient energy use, and this has triggered the search for nanostructural modification methods to improve performance. Achieving a high density of tunable-sized second-phase nanoparticles while ensuring the matrix remains intact is a long-sought goal. In this paper, we present an effective, scalable method to achieve this goal using metal organic deposition in a perovskite system REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 (rare earth (RE)) that enhances the superconducting properties to surpass that of previous achievements. We present two industrially compatible routes to tune the nanoparticle size by controlling diffusion during the nanoparticle formation stage by selecting the second-phase material and modulating the precursor composition spatially. Combining these routes leads to an extremely high density (8 × 10 22 m â '3) of small nanoparticles (7 nm) that increase critical currents and reduce detrimental effects of thermal fluctuations at all magnetic field strengths and temperatures. This method can be directly applied to other perovskite materials where nanoparticle addition is beneficial.

Development of innovative superconducting DC power cable

It is required to reduce the cost of superconducting cable to realize a superconducting DC power network that covers a wide area in order to utilize renewable energy. In this paper a new concept of innovative cable is introduced that can enhance the current-carrying capacity even though the same superconducting tape is used. Such a cable can be realized by designing an optimal winding structure in such a way that the angle between the tape and magnetic field becomes small. This idea was confirmed by preliminary experiments for a single layer model cable made of Bi-2223 tapes and REBCO coated conductors. Experiments of three and four layer cables of practical sizes were also done and it was found that the current-carrying capacity increased as theoretically predicted. If the critical current properties of commercial superconducting tapes are further improved in a parallel magnetic field, the enhancement will become pronounced and this technology will surely contribute to realization of superconducting DC power network.

© Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. In this paper, magnetic levitation tool with superconducting bulks is introduced as a new hollow machining technology. Magnetic levitation tool is the machine that magnet levitates above superconducting bulks and driving force of rotating magnet shaves the object. This tool is expected to use for a grinding machine and machining device because of hollow machining and micromachining by strong fixing. For using magnetic levitation tool, the attractive force, the repulsive force and rotating torque are important for grinding machine, machining outer surface and both, respectively. These forces are calculated by FEM, and compared with experimental results. The experimental results are agreed well with calculated results. However, the attractive force is one order smaller than that required in chemical mechanical polishing.

Evaluation of Trapped Magnetic Field Properties in Superconducting MgB<inf>2</inf> Bulk Magnets of Various Shapes by Finite Element Method 査読有り

© 2016 The Authors.The trapped magnetic field properties of superconducting MgB2 bulk magnets with various shapes such as a triangular, a quadrangular, a hexangular bulk were calculated by the Finite Elements Method (FEM). The effect for the combination of several numbers of bulks was also investigated for several kinds of shapes to obtain large area of bulk surface in spite of one large bulk. In this calculation, the simple magnetization process replaced by the field-cool magnetization was used to obtain the equivalent distribution of the magnetic field, and the thermal equation in FEM was omitted. The trapped magnetic field for the triangular bulk by FEM was compared with the experimental result. It was found that the calculated results agreed well with the experimental result. The maximum trapped magnetic field was obtained in the cylindrical shape among several kinds of shapes. The trapped magnetic field was increased by the combination of multi-bulks. It was confirmed that the trapped magnetic field of the multi-bulks was larger than that of the single bulk. The trapped magnetic field increases with increasing the number of the bulks.

Critical Current Properties in Longitudinal Magnetic Field of YBCO Superconductor with APC 査読有り

The critical current density (Jc) properties of the Artificial Pinning Center (APC) introduced YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) films in the longitudinal magnetic field were measured. Y2O3 or Y2BaCuO5 (Y211) was introduced as APCs to YBCO, and YBCO films with APC were fabricated on SrTiO3 single crystal substrate. The sizes of Y2O3 and Y211 were 5 - 10 nm and 10 - 20 nm, respectively. As a result, Jc enhancement in the longitudinal magnetic field was observed in Y2O3 introduced YBCO films. However, it was not observed in Y211 introduced YBCO films. Therefore, it was considered that Jc properties in the longitudinal magnetic field were affected by introducing of small size APC, and it was necessary that APC does not disturb the current pathway in the superconductor.
