    The decay processes of wave-packets scattered by periodically perturbed and unperturbed rounded-rectangular potentials are studied numerically and theoretically, when the widths of the potentials L are very large. For the case of the unperturbed potentials, four different stages successively arise in the decay process of the wave in the potential region: Two pre-exponential decays, namely power-law decay of t-3 and oscillating power-law decay, exponential decay and post-exponential decay, which is also power-law decay of t-3. The postexponential decay is usually extremely small in magnitude. The characteristics of the pre-exponential and exponential decays are explained with the properties of resonance states, i.e. the Gamow states, for the unperturbed system. The rate of the exponential decay is determined by the imaginary part of the eigenenergy of the first resonance state. For the two pre-exponential decays, the ending time of the t-3 decay is a linear function of L and that of the oscillating power-law decay is proportional to L3. In the limit of L→∞, the t-3 decay is observed persistently, namely the decay for the rounded-step potential. For the perturbed potentials, even if the average energy of an initial wave-packet is relatively smaller than the oscillating potential, the noninstanton tunnelling, i.e. the multi-quanta absorption tunnelling, raises the tunnelling wave component up to the oscillating top of the rounded-rectangular potential, and the tunnelling probability rapidly increases with the perturbation strength. The properties of the resonance states are almost the same as those of the Gamow states because of the flatness of the potential top. As a result, the decay process after the tunnelling is almost the same as that for the unperturbed system. It is suggested that the tunnelling amplitude and tunnelling time, namely the amplitude and period of the pre-exponential decay, can be controlled by the perturbation strength and the potential width, respectively.

    The sounding mechanism of a recorder-like air-jet instrument at low Strouhal number is numerically investigated by three-dimensional direct aeroacoustic simulation and acoustic simulation. Howe's energy corollary is applied to estimate the acoustic energy generation and absorption induced by an oscillating jet and vortex shedding. The quantitative results show that the main acoustic energy generation occurs in the jet downstream, and the absorption occurs in the jet upstream. It is found that the region defined by the Q-criterion identifies the main acoustic energy generation (absorption) region in the downstream (upstream) region of the jet. The results indicate that the vortex shedding mainly induced by the jet deflection gives additional contributions to the acoustic energy absorption. The shed vortices affect the temporal structure of the acoustic energy transfer, in particular, the timing of the double peaks with respect to the jet displacement. If we focus only on the air-jet, the dominant peak is observed when the jet crosses the edge from the inside to the outside of the pipe, as reported in previous experimental works. However, when we include the contributions of shed vortices, the dominant peak appears when the jet dives under the edge, which is consistent with the jet-drive model.

    A two-dimensional model of the edge tone is studied by a highly accurate and reliable method of direct numerical simulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, and used to verify key features observed in previous experimental and numerical studies, and to discover new features related to the jet motion and the edge tone generation mechanism. The first and second modes of the edge tone that are numerically reproduced agree well with Brown’s equation. In the mode transition region, dynamical mode transition is observed at a fixed jet velocity. For both first and second modes, the pressure distributions are antisymmetric with respect to the edge plate, and the sound intensity is proportional to the fifth power of the jet velocity. These results are consistent with the edge tone being radiated from a dipole-like source. Spatial profiles of the velocity and the velocity variance of the oscillating jet are also investigated for each mode over a range of the jet velocity including the mode transition regime. The amplitude of the velocity oscillation becomes constant with increasing jet velocity, while a measure of the amplitude of the velocity variance profile, which is introduced to characterize the strength of the jet fluctuation and named the ’fluctuation strength’, is proportional to the third power of the jet velocity. Some properties of the fluctuation strength correspond to properties of the sound intensity, including the first mode having larger amplitude than the second mode, and the way of deviating from the power law at smaller values of jet velocity and in the mode transition region. It is proposed that the third-power law exhibited by behavior of the fluctuation strength could be related to the increase of the skewness observed in the velocity profile with increase of jet velocity, and a model calculation is used to support this proposal.

Sci. & Tech. vol.40, No.1 pp.29-39 (2019)), we found with the numerical study of a 2D flue organ pipe model that the foot works as a Helmholtz resonator. When the frequency of acoustic oscillation in the pipe is higher than the resonance frequency of the Helmholtz resonator by almost the full-width at half-maximum, the most stable oscillation is observed, and the oscillation in the foot is anti-synchronized with that in the pipe. However, if the Helmholtz resonance frequency is nearly equal to the acoustic oscillation frequency, the oscillations in the pipe and foot become rather unstable and the oscillation in the foot lags behind that in the pipe by nearly p /2. In this paper, we study the phase relations among the pressure oscillation in the foot, that in the pipe, and the hydrodynamic oscillation of the jet, which are the key to understanding the mechanism of stabilizing and destabilizing oscillations of the flue organ pipe.

    © 2019 Proceedings of the International Congress on Acoustics. All rights reserved. A jet attacking a edge oscillates spontaneously, and generates aerodynamic sound called edge tone. The edge tone is the sound source of air-jet instruments like a recorder and flute. The jet oscillation has several modes. While one of the modes is selected, the frequency increases linearly with the jet velocity. When the jet velocity exceeds a threshold, the mode transition arises, and it is hysteretic. The mode transition induces sudden changes of the frequency and the sound energy. Therefore, the reproducibility of the mode transition with a numerical calculation is crucial for understanding the mechanism of edge tone. In this study, the 2D model of edge tone is investigated with compressible DNS and LES. The DNS adopted in our study is an exact method without any artificial viscosity terms. The mode transition can be accurately reproduced with DNS. On the other hand, in some cases of calculations with LES, the mode transition cannot be reproduced even though the calculation is not broken down. We discuss the details of this problem.

In this paper, we discuss the numerical reproducibility of the compressible fluid behavior around a tone hole of woodwind instruments by using compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES). In particular, we focus on the situation that the tone hole is opened and closed with moving a pad above the tone hole, which is regarded as a moving boundary problem with topology change. Our numerical model is based on a 2D analog of Keefe's experimental model, which has a tone hole placed at the center of the resonance tube. To reproduce the opening and closing the tone hole, the pad is moved continuously. Actually, the position of the pad was continuously changed in the order of "open - close - open". Our numerical results agree rather well with Keefe's experimental results. We solved the moving boundary problem with topology change under the situation of acoustics of fluid-structure interaction, and reproduced transitions between resonance and non-resonance states. In addition, the details of complex vortices near the tone holes clarified by this numerical calculation will be reported.

    We investigate the energy transfer between the fluid field and acoustic field caused by a jet driven by an acoustic particle velocity field across it, which is the key to understanding the aerodynamic sound generation of flue instruments, such as the recorder, flute, and organ pipe. Howe's energy corollary allows us to estimate the energy transfer between these two fields. For simplicity, we consider the situation such that a free jet is driven by a uniform acoustic particle velocity field across it. We improve the semi-empirical model of the oscillating jet, i.e., exponentially growing jet model, which has been studied in the field of musical acoustics, and introduce a polynomially growing jet model so as to apply Howe's formula to it. It is found that the relative phase between the acoustic oscillation and jet oscillation, which changes with the distance from the flue exit, determines the quantity of the energy transfer between the two fields. The acoustic energy is mainly generated in the downstream area, but it is consumed in the upstream area near the flue exit in driving the jet. This theoretical examination well explains the numerical calculation of Howe's formula for the two-dimensional flue instrument model in our previous work [Fluid Dyn. Res. 46, 061411 (2014)] as well as the experimental result of Yoshikawa et al. [J. Sound Vib. 331, 2558 (2012)] .

    Single reed instruments with cylindrical and conical bores were studied numerically, focusing on the dependence of the acoustic mechanism on the bore geometry. As experimentally demonstrated by Idogawa et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am., Vol.98, p.540 (1993)], reed instruments can be characterized as multi-attractor systems, which exhibit multi-stable oscillations and hysteretic transitions among oscillating states with change of a control parameter, such as blowing pressure in the mouth. We numerically analyzed dynamical models of single reed instruments to clarify differences in the acoustic mechanisms between cylindrical and conical bore instruments. We analyzed a dynamical model of a cylindrical pipe fitted with a clarinet mouthpiece(CPCM), as a simplified model of the clarinet, and a dynamical model of a truncated cone with a clarinet mouthpiece (TCCM), as a model of conical-bore instruments, together with intermediately shaped models. We found a clear difference in the global structure of transition diagrams (i.e., the overall picture showing the transitions among all the excited states with change of the blowing pressure) between CPCM and TCCM, together with interesting structural changes of the transition diagrams in the intermediate models. © S.     In multidimensional barrier tunneling, there exist different semiclassical mechanisms, i.e., the well-established instanton mechanism and the recently discovered mechanism utilizing complexified stable-unstable manifolds as the guide of tunneling paths.     In recent years a new description has been developed for tunnelling in multi-dimensional systems based on complexified stable-unstable manifolds of periodic saddles. The complexified stable-unstable manifolds guide complex-classical tunnelling trajectories over the energetic barrier (Takahashi and Ikeda 2003 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 7953). In this paper it is claimed, based on theoretical analysis and numerical evidence, that the tunnelling mechanism due to complexified stable-unstable manifolds is associated with a characteristic plateau feature in the tunnelling spectrum. An analysis of a particular two-dimensional barrier tunnelling model shows that the plateau feature is obtained by a fully quantum-mechanical computation, and that the complex-semiclassical theory successfully reproduces this feature. Moreover, an analytical theory based upon Melnikov's method is developed and used to clarify quantitatively how the tunnelling mechanism due to the complexified stable-unstable manifolds leads to the formation of the plateau structure; in particular, it is shown that the classical action along the complexified stable manifold controls the height of the plateau. The analysis presented here is based on a particular model, but the main claims should hold for any system with multi-dimensional barrier tunnelling because of the universality of the underlying mechanism. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    The fully complex domain semiclassical theory based upon the complexified stable-unstable manifold theory, which we have developed in our recent studies, is successfully applied to explain anomalous tunneling phenomena numerically observed in a periodically modulated round-off-step potential. Numerical experiments show that tunneling through the oscillating step potential is characterized by a spatially nondecaying tunneling tail and an anomalously slow relaxation. The key is the existence of a critical trajectory exhibiting singular behavior, and the analysis of neighboring trajectories around it reproduces the essence of such anomalous phenomena. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

In particular, if a system under consideration is classically non-integrable, very complicated tunneling phenomena, so called chaotic tunneling, are observed. The aim of this short review is to explain the underlying classical mechanism of multi-dimensional barrier tunneling by using the semiclassical method based on classical dynamics extended to the complex domain, i.e., complex semiclassical method. The tunneling probability of multi-dimensional barrier systems is still well reproduced by using the complex semiclassical method even in the chaotic tunneling regime, in which a characteristic tunneling phenomenon, i.e. the fringed tunneling, is observed. However the classical trajectories guided by complexified stable and unstable manifold dominantly contribute to the tunneling probability, which gives quite a different picture of the tunneling from that given by the ordinary instanton mechanism.

    A complex semiclassical analysis was carried out for the tunneling problem of a kicked scattering model, which creates chaotic dynamics in complex domain. The structure of complex phase space was investigated for a kicked scattering model, and related the structure to the amounts of imaginary parts of actions gained by tunneling orbits. The symbolic description of the homoclinic tangle was applied to the symbolic encoding of the behaviors exhibited by semiclassical candidate orbits. A symbolic formula for the estimation of imaginary parts of actions was derived. The role played by complex-domain chaos in semiclassical descriptions of tunneling processes in nonintegrable system was also discussed.

    The fringed tunnelling, which can be observed in strongly coupled 1.5-dimensional barrier systems as well as in autonomous two-dimensional barrier systems, is a manifestation of intrinsic multi-dimensional effects in the tunnelling process. In this paper, we investigate such an intrinsic multi-dimensional effect on the tunnelling by means of classical dynamical theory and semiclassical theory, which are extended to the complex domain. In particular, we clarify the underlying classical mechanism which enables multiple tunnelling trajectories to simultaneously contribute to the wavefunction, thereby resulting in the formation of the remarkable interference fringe on it. Theoretical analyses are carried out in the low-frequency regime based upon a complexified adiabatic tunnelling solution, together with the Melnikov method extended to the complex domain. These analyses reveal that the fringed tunnelling is a result of a heterodinic-like entanglement between the complexified stable manifold of the barrier-top unstable periodic orbit and the incident beam set. Tunnelling particles reach the real phase plane very promptly, guided by the complexified stable manifold, which gives quite a different picture of the tunnelling from the ordinary instanton mechanism. More fundamentally, the entanglement is attributed to a divergent movement of movable singularities of the classical trajectory, namely, to a singular dependence of singularities on its initial condition.

    We investigate the semiclassical mechanism of tunneling processes in nonintegrable systems. The significant role of complex-phase-space chaos in the description of the tunneling processes is elucidated by studying a kicked scattering model. Behaviors of tunneling orbits are encoded into symbolic sequences based on the structure of a complex homoclinic tangle. By means of the symbolic coding, the phase space itineraries of tunneling orbits are related with the amounts of imaginary parts of actions gained by the orbits, so that the systematic search of dominant tunneling orbits becomes possible. © 2003 The American Physical Society.

    A divergent movement exhibited by singularities of complexified classical trajectories plays an important role in multi-dimensional barrier tunneling. It induces a complex-domain heteroclinic entanglement between the stable manifold of a barrier-top unstable periodic orbit and incoming trajectories. Formation of such a complexified dynamical structure is generic in multi-dimensional barrier systems and enables multiple tunneling paths to contribute to the tunneling phenomena, which is observed as a "fringed" tunneling phenomenon, i.e., the tunneling probability is remarkably fringed due to the interference among multiple tunneling paths. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.     We have revealed that the barrier-tunneling process in nonintegrable systems is strongly linked to chaos in complex phase space by investigating a simple scattering map model. The semiclassical wave function reproduces complicated features of tunneling perfectly and it enables us to solve all the reasons why those features appear in spite of absence of chaos on the real plane.     Semiclassical theory based upon complexified classical mechanics is developed for periodically time-dependent scattering systems, which are minimal models of multi-dimensional systems. Semiclassical expression of the wave-matrix is derived, which is represented as the sum of the contributions from classical trajectories, where all the dynamical variables as well as the time are extended to the complex-domain. The semiclassical expression is examined by a periodically perturbed 1D barrier system and an excellent agreement with the fully quantum result is confirmed. In a stronger perturbation regime, the tunneling component of the wave-matrix exhibits a remarkable interference fringes, which is clarified by the semiclassical theory as an interference among multiple complex tunneling trajectories. It turns out that such a peculiar behavior is the manifestation of an intrinsic multi-dimensional effect closely related to a singular movement of singularities possessed by the complex classical trajectories.

    The sounding mechanism of a cylindrical pipe fitted with a clarinet mouthpiece (CPCM) is studied. The main aim of this paper is to introduce a reliable and minimal model which satisfactorily reproduces nonlinear vibrations excited in the air column and associated hysteretic transitions between them when the blowing pressure is varied as a control parameter. Such phenomena are commonly observed for woodwind reed instruments blown artificially, as reported by Idogawa et al. The noteworthy point of our model is that a reflection function consists of two main inverted peaks, one with a long delay, which represents the reflection from the open pipeend, and the other with a short delay, which originates from the irregular bore geometry of the mouthpiece. Our numerical calculation is carried out using the Schumacher model [Acustica 48 (1981), 71], including such a reflection function. Many kinds of nonlinear vibrations, periodic and quasi-periodic vibrations, as well as the hysteretic transitions between them are obtained numerically. Our results reproduce those observed experimentally quite well. They strongly suggest that the sound wave reflection due to the irregularity of the mouthpiece is one of the essential properties of woodwind sounding.

    The tunneling effect in multidimensional systems may be greatly influenced by the underlying chaotic dynamics which is generic in more than one-dimensional systems. Aiming at a classical dynamical description of chaotic tunneling, we have developed in the present paper a basic formulation for the complex-domain semiclassical wave-matrix of systems with 1.5 degrees of freedom, namely, periodically time-dependent 1D-scattering systems, which can be regarded as a minimal model of multidimensional systems. Using an autonomous 2D system equivalent to the periodically time-dependent system, the semiclassical expression of the wave-matrix described in the 1D time-dependent picture is derived. In the latter half of the paper, our semiclassical formulation is examined with two simple examples, i.e., an oscillating wall and an oscillating barrier. The semiclassical wave-matrix is constructed, paying particular attention to some problems which emerge by extending classical dynamics to complex domain, and the results are compared with the fully quantum counterparts. The semiclassical results agree quite well with the corresponding quantal results if complex classical trajectories are fully taken into account. The relationship between the semiclassical wave-matrix and Miller's classical S-matrix is also discussed. © 2000 Academic Press.

    The FFT-symplectic integrator (SI) scheme devised for solving the wave packet propagation problem is applied to stationary reactive-scattering problems. In order to relate the stationary problem to the time-dependent problem, a class of Schrödinger equation with an inhomogeneous wave source term is introduced. By using the equivalence between the stationary scattering eigenstate and the equilibrium state of the inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation, the scattering eigenstates can be computed by integrating the inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation with the FFT-SI scheme. A Gaussian wave source is proposed as an efficient wave source exhibiting rapid relaxation toward the eigenstate. Our method is tested by a one-dimensional example which has an analytical solution, and great numerical accuracy is confirmed. It is further examined by an example of time-dependent scattering and by a two-dimensional example of chaotic tunnel-scattering. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Applicability of symplectic integrator (SI) to classically unstable (chaotic) quantum systems is examined, and accuracy and efficiency as a numerical integrator of Schro¨dinger equation are demonstrated. The second order SI is well known as the split operator method to molecular scientists. Recently, construction of higher order SIs has been developed by several authors. In the present paper, we compare systematically various higher order SI schemes by applying them to a simple quantum chaos system and emphasize the necessity of introducing higher order schemes. Although the higher order SIs have originally been invented for high precision computation of classical trajectories, it will more promisingly be applied to quantum systems. This is because the exponential instability is absent in quantum systems, but an extensive numerical test reveals that the accumulation of error accompanying a long time integration by SI reflects the stability of the system in the classical limit, and closer attention must be payed for classically chaotic quantum system in the semiclassical regime. It is in such a regime that higher order SI schemes work efficiently. © 1993 American Institute of Physics.

    The long term behavior of non-integrable quantum systems is investigated to find a classical counterpart that describes the statistical properties of dynamical fluctuation of quantum observables. On the basis of the quantum-classical correspondence in the integrable system, we introduce the ensemble of classical trajectories (ECT), which is defined as a set of weighted classical trajectories whose mean density in phase space is one per Planck cell. In the non-integrable system, due to the rapid breakdown of quantum-classical correspondence of the wavepacket dynamics, the ECT is unable to yield the correct temporal behavior of quantum observables. However, numerical experiments reveal that it gives a good approximation of various statistical properties of the quantum dynamical fluctuation. This result strongly suggests that, as far as the statistical properties are concerned, the dominant part of the quantum dynamical fluctuation is determined by classical dynamics, i.e. a set of classical trajectories. The meaning and interpretation of the ECT in relation to the coherent subsystem is also discussed. © 1993, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN. All rights reserved.

    This paper deals with how a classical mechanics relates to the quantum mechanics, comparing the stationary distribution function on a constant energy in a coarsegrained classical system with the Husimi function pH of the eigenstate of quantum system. In the domain of a torus with one degree of freedom, these two functions are quite similar to each other. On the other hand, around a hyperbolic fixed-point the functions satisfy the equations of the similar type. However the solutions admissible for classical and quantum distribution functions have very different forms. In this paper we discuss the necessity for the problem of the correspondence between classical and quantum mechanics to investigate not only the similarity of the equations but also the geometrical structure of the solutions. © 1989, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN.     Relationship between Husimi function ρH and distribution function ρcc in coarsegrained classical mechanics is studied where ρcc is introduced by same manner of coarse-graining in Husimi function. Defining the product of dynamical variables and Poisson brackets in coarse-grained classical mechanics, we reduce the equations for time development of the quantities.     Time development of quantum wave packet is studied in the Hisumi representation for regular and irregular case. The Husimi distribution function spreads on tori or into irregular region for regular or irregular case, respectively and coincides to classical probability distribution function. However by the quantum mechanical interference effects, small packets appear in the process of time development and thus the Husimi distribution function distributes inhomogeneously in contrast to the classical uniform probability distribution function.     The quantum dynamics in Husimi representation is studied for the commutation relation, time development of distribution function and eigen distribution function. In the integrable system, the Husimi eigen distribution function is confined almost on the classical torus and can be approximated by Gaussian distribution with the variance (Δξι)2 ∼ ħ/2 around the torus.     We study the correspondence between quantum and classical dynamics with Wigner and Husimi distribution functions, respectively. The nature of quantum-mechanical regular and irregular behaviors is discussed with the use of Wigner and Husimi distribution functions. By numerical studies of the chaotic state, the Husimi distribution function is found to be a better representation than the Wigner distribution function, because coarse graining is usually involved implicitly in an observational process using the Wigner distribution function. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

    The response of the regular and irregular regions to a periodic external force in two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems are studied, through power spectrum, energy change, Poincare map and Lyapunov number. In the regular case, three-dimensional tori are constructed for small perturbation. It is shown that there exists a certain critical value Qc of the amplitude of the external force below which the trajectories are regular but above which they become irregular. In the irregular region, main attention is paid to the Lyapunov number, which is shown to vary sensitively to the variation of the amplitude, indicating the difference of the nature of the orbits. This suggests that perturbation theory is not applicable to the irregular case, as is usually done in the linear response theory. © 1985, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN. All rights reserved.
