Recognition of Finger-Spelled Letters Using a Color Distribution from a Chest-Mounted Camera Reviewed

This paper proposes a method of recognizing finger-spelled letters using a video obtained from a chest-mounted camera. A finger-speller performs the spelling to the camera mounted on his/her chest. The images of the speller's hand are captured and analyzed by a PC to recognize the letters. For the hand detection, the color distribution of the hand is examined initially to cope with various illumination conditions. The detected hand area is recognized using the PCA and the nearest neighbor method. Experimental results show satisfactory performance of the proposed method.

In recent years, elderly people who live alone have been continually increasing. Its number is equivalent to 31.4 percent of elderly population in Japan. In the worst case, they cannot cry for help because of diseases or sudden injuries. Therefore a system for watching over elderly people is strongly requested in our society. In order to realize such a system, this paper proposes a method of recognizing human motions employing an expanded MHI which uses FoE (Focus of Expansion) to recognize the motion toward the depth direction. The proposed method was applied to the recognition of 6 human motions including 'fall down' and satisfactory results were obtained.

In the field for visual screening, it is difficult task to detect blood vessel regions with high accuracy detection rates since blood vessel regions are in contact with bone region on the CTA images. In this paper, we propose a new method for segmentation of arterial area, which are obtained CTA based on gradient features, and satisfactory experimental results are obtained. Some experimental results are shown with discussion.

In this paper, we develop a CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) system for assisting in visual screening. In the first stage, we calculate the statistical features such as density, shape and textures on segmented candidate regions. Finally, we implement a classifier based on support vector machine to distinguish final candidate regions. We applied the proposed method to 31 CT image sets in the Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC) which is supplied by National Center Institute (NCI).

In diagnostic imaging of phalanges, X-ray and CT images are used to evaluate the value of phalanges destruction. Especially, MRI is used mainly to diagnose the lesion in soft tissue. It is possible to detect in early stages by using the MR images. In order to detect abnormalities and analyze the abnormal structures image processing technique can provide a useful skill. However, the large number of images make burden to the radiologist. Therefore, to reduce the burden, CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) system is expected from the medical fields. In this paper, we proposed an automatic segmentation algorithm of phalanges regions on MR images based on MSGVF Snakes algorithm.

Pulmonary nodules with ground glass opacity (GGO) in lung CT images are difficult to differential diagnosis, and follow-up are often performed. In cases of follow-up, the present CT images are compared with past CT images, and it is necessary to evaluate the changes quantitatively. So, we have developed a volumetric segmentation algorithm of pulmonary nodules with GGO on CT images. Nodules with GGO, especially pure-GGO, are difficult to define a threshold value. Therefore, our algorithm does not define a threshold value. In our algorithm, the first step is to emphasize CT images using the sigmoid function. Next, the nodule is roughly segmented with background subtraction. Finally the nodule without vessels is decided by morphological operation, etc. For evaluation of our algorithm, we selected nodules with GGO from the dataset provided by LIDC (The Lung Image Database Consortium). In this paper, we illustrate some experimental result w hich applied our algorithm.

A Temporal Subtraction Technique on Thoracic MDCT Images by Using GGVF and Smoothing of Shift Vectors

Recently, some computer aided diagnoses (CAD) systems has been introduced until now. Temporal subtraction technique, as one of the CAD systems, can emphasize temporal changes of interested regions by subtracting a previous image from a current one, which are images of a same patient. A previous image is deformed to suit a current image considering a variation of pose and inhalation differences when a patient accepts CT inspection at different times and subtracted from a current image. However, accurate registration is difficult because organizations such as a vessel are distributed three-dimensionally in a lung region. It is caused that each shift vector (shift amount and direction of a pixel) is less consistency to surrounding shift vectors in some area of a lung region by mis-registration and many artifacts are remained on temporal images. In this paper, we propose a method of registration based on GGVF considering information of structures in a lung regions and smoothing of shift vectors, and aim to improve registration and reduce artifacts in a subtraction image.

Recently, image fusion technique is used on medical field, which is obtained various different modalities. To make a fusion image, registration is important task. However, because many registration techniques need manual operation, increased burden to the doctors and the difference of result becomes a problem. In this paper, we propose a method for image fusion on head CT and MR image to assist surgical plan for the Cyber Knife. Our registration technique is performed two main steps; 1) global registration by using center of gravity, and outline information of image, 2) final registration by use of the mutual information which is selected some VOIs. In this paper, we report some experimental results with registration accuracy and computational processing time.

There are osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis in the main disease of the bones. Currently, to diagnose that diseases CR, CT and MR images are used in medical fields. Major feature of the diagnostic criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are still performed manually and there is no method to detect the osteoporosis quantitatively using radiographs until now. To overcome the lack of accuracy and overestimation problem, automatic extraction and quantitative assessment of the region of interest based on image processing technique is required from medical fields In this paper, to analysis the osteoporosis such as quantitative and checking the temporal changes, we proposed a method for segmentation of each phalange regions and registration of same subject which is obtained previous and current of radiograph. We describes some experimental results by using the previous and current image from the same subject.

Detecting feature points from an image is an important technique in advanced image processing, and various feature point detection methods have been proposed to date. Attention is paid on the technique for detecting corner points in this paper. The proposed method detects corners of objects from an ILBP image by use of particular ILBP values and their spread patterns. The advantage of the proposed method is that, unlike Harris corner detector or FAST, it does not employ a threshold for the corner detection. Experimental results are shown with discussion.

This paper proposes a method of detecting salient regions from an image. Detection of salient regions is important, because it is expected to improve the precision and the processing speed of object recognition through image processing. The proposed method employs human visual characteristics, i.e., complementary color harmony and Purkinje phenomenon to detect salient regions from an image. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the spatial redundancy considering global redundancy and local redundancy, based on the human visual characteristics.

In recent years, the walk support equipment for visually impaired persons has spread, and a studded paving block and a sound-type signal are installed on the sidewalk. However, there are still problems that the places of installation are few with the former, and the provided information becomes obscure with the latter in the noisy environment such as heavy traffic or heavy rain. In order to solve these difficulties, this paper proposes a method of detecting pedestrian signals and traffic signs at a pedestrian crossing from a self-wearable camera. Experimental results are shown and the method is evaluated.
