The mechanism by which acupuncture stimulation increases blood flow in the remote area has been attributed
to the involvement of the supraspinal reflex. However, in our preliminary experiments, we observed phenomena
that could not be explained solely by the involvement of supraspinal reflexes. Since nitric oxide is involved
in vasodilation and since nitric oxide diffuses into the blood and binds to hemoglobin, we hypothesized that nitric
oxide generated by acupuncture stimulation is carried by the blood and causes vasodilation in remote areas. In this study, we conducted experiments to verify the presence of nitric oxide and the resulting vasodilation phenomenon in humans by measuring transcutaneous oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) using a fingertip volumetric pulse wave meter, and by measuring vascular diameter using a blood flow scope. As a result, the closer the acupuncture point was to the measurement site, the shorter the time until the vasodilation caused by nitric oxide occurred at the measurement site. This suggests that nitric oxide generated by acupuncture diffuses into the blood, binds to hemoglobin, and is transported to peripheral blood vessels, contributing to peripheral vasodilation in remote areas.

<p>[Purpose] We compared a knee orthosis developed with a focus on fitting pressure with the orthoses of patients with knee osteoarthritis, to examine whether the fitting pressure increased or not, and to compare the patients’ subjective evaluations of the two orthoses. [Participants and Methods] The subjects were 20 patients (8 males and 12 females) with knee osteoarthritis. First, we measured the pressure when the newly developed orthosis was worn and compared it with the pressure when the existing orthosis was worn. Then the patients reported their subjective evaluations of the difficulty of wearing, breathability, appearance, weight and wearing feeling of their existing orthosis and the newly developed orthosis on a Visual Analogue Scale. [Results] There was a significant difference in the pressure applied between the existing and newly developed orthoses. There were no significant differences in the patients’ subjective evaluations. [Conclusion] The pressure applied for the newly developed orthosis could be set higher than that of patients’ existing orthoses, but there were no differences in the patients’ subjective evaluations.</p>

<p> [Purpose] This study aimed to determine whether applying electrical stimulation to the deltoid and extensor digitorum muscles could lead to a reduction in fixation force during shoulder joint adduction and grip strength. [Participants and Methods] Fifteen healthy adult males participated in this study. In the shoulder adduction force experiment, the middle fibers of the deltoid muscle of the dominant arm were electrically stimulated. In the grip strength experiment, the extensor digitorum muscle of the dominant arm was electrically stimulated. The forces exerted with and without the electrical stimulation were measured. [Results] The torque of the shoulder adduction force decreased significantly with electrical stimulation, while no significant change was observed in normalized grip strength with electrical stimulation. [Conclusion] The response of antagonist muscles to electrical stimulation varied according to location.</p>
