Recent past has witnessed very fast development of solution processable organic semiconductors and their utilization as active components of organic electronic devices aiming towards the practical realization of low-cost flexible and printable electronics. Organic electronic devices need multilayer fabrication of devise components, where control of their morphology along with the various interfaces critically controls the overall performance of the devices. Therefore, there is an urge for the facile fabrication of large area uniform films with controllable film morphology and minimal interference to underlying layers. We have developed a novel method of thin film fabrication known as floating film transfer method (FTM), which provides large area uniform films and oriented thin films of organic semiconductors. This technique has been successfully employed to a number of conjugated polymers (CPs) to fabricated their large area and oriented thin films followed by the investigation of their anisotropic charge carrier transport. We have demonstarted that by controlling the parameters for thin film fabrication using NR-P3HT under FTM led to not only macroscopically oriented films but also there was a remarkable enhancement in the field effect mobility (>100 times) as compared to their spin-coated film counterparts. Utilizing highly edge-on oriented thin film thin films of PBTTT-C14 processed by FTM, we have not only demonstarted a very high optical dichroism of >10 but also an OFET mobility of 1.24 cm2/Vs, which is one of the highest reported mobility values for this class of CPs. At the same time, we have also newly developed 2D positional mapping system capable of swift measurement of thickness and orientation distribution in the large area thin film. Reliability of this mapping systems has been validated utilizing a number of thin films of different type of CPs fabricated by different techniques such as spin-coating, friction transfer and FTM. Results pertaining to the oriented film fabrication, orientation mechanism, film uniformity and anisotropy along with the application of utilizing oriented thin films in the organic electronic devices will be highlighted & discussed in detail.

DEVELOPMENT OF NIR-SENSITIVE DYES FOR DYE-SENSITIZED SOLAR CELLS BASED ON COMBINED THEORETICAL &EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted huge attention not only due to environment-friendly and cost-effective solar energy harvesting but also their aesthetic vibrant colour tunability and tremendous potential for building integrated photovoltaics due to controllable transparency [1,2]. Bi-facial solar cells are another area, where DSSCs find tremendous potential also due to the possibility of utilizing transparent counter electrodes. State-of-art DSSCs have reached photoconversion efficiencies (PCE) beyond 13% despite photon harvesting window mainly in the visible wavelength region covering only 45 % photon flux of the solar spectrum. Therefore, the design and development of near-infrared (NIR) dyes are inevitable for further improvement in the PCE by panchromatic photon harvesting. Our group is involved in the development of NIR dyes for >10 years aiming toward the enhancement of the PCE of DSSCs. A series of NIR dyes from the Squaraine (SQ) family has been designed considering aspects like energetic control, wavelength tunability and implication of nature of anchoring group on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs based on combined theoretical using Quantum Chemical (QC) and experimental approaches [3]. We have demonstrated reliable prediction of the energetics and spectral behaviour of NIR dyes utilizing Gaussian for QC calculations with an excellent match between the theoretically calculated and experimentally observed results [4,5]. In my talk, emphasis will be given to the design and development of novel NIR dyes aiming towards not only enhancing the efficiency and stability of DSSCs but also their suitability in colourful transparent as well as bifacial solar cells.

Conducting polymers (CPs) have demonstrated their lead role as active organic semiconductors towards the practical realization of the next generation flexible and wearable electronics. High performance organic electronic devices utilizing organic semiconductors have been although demonstrated utilizing thermal evaporation techniques but such a thin film processing is not suitable large area implementation. Due to one-dimensional nature of conjugated polymers (CPs), they are susceptible to molecular self-aggregation, therefore, their film morphology and molecular orientation plays a dominant role in deciding the final device performance. Although spin-coating is one of most widely used technique, but huge material wastage and challenges for multi-layer coating are intriguing issues. To circumvent these issues, our group developed and improvised a facile and highly cost-effective technique named as floating film transfer method (FTM) to fabricate large area oriented thin films of CPs. Using NR P3HT as organic semiconductor, we have demonstrated that FTM processed thin films exhibited a remarkable enhancement (>102 times) in the FET mobility. Utilizing a liquid crystalline CP, PBTTT-C14, we have demonstrated the FET mobility of 1.24 cm2/Vs, which is one of the highest values reported for this class of material.
Apart from facile large area thin film fabrication, probing the film homogeneity in terms of thickness and extent of orientations especially in the large area of the films is inevitable. To provide an amicable solution for this issue, we have newly developed 2-dimensional positional mapping system for a facile and swift profiling of thickness as well as the molecular orientation. At the same time, validity of newly designed 2D positional mapping system was also proved using a number of CPs fabricated by different thin film fabrication methods.
