With the aggravation of the aging trend in Japan, the number of elderly people living alone has gradually increased, and the development of elderly people care system has begun to receive attention. Considering this trend, the paper proposes a MHI(Motion History Image)-based method called TMRIs (Triplet Motion Representation Images) that solve in recognition, a self-occlusive motion problem particularly in the depth direction using a single camera. The performance and effectiveness of the method are verified by experiments.

A system is proposed that performs gait analysis of a pedestrian to prevent fall. In the system, a user walks with a chest-mounted camera. His/her walking posture is estimated using a pair of images obtained from the camera. Normally it is difficult to estimate the camera movement, when the parallax of the image pair is small. Therefore, the system uses a convolutional neural network. Optical flow and camera movement, and depth images are estimated alternately. Satisfactory results were obtained experimentally.

In recent years, the labor shortage has become a serious problem in logistics industries. In particular, among the five major functions of logistics, most of the storage and cargo handling operations are performed manually using forklifts. This problem can be solved by automating the process. In this paper, we propose a method to acquire the position of cargo from the images taken by two fixed cameras in a warehouse and the relative distance information between a transport vehicle and the cargo using the camera attached to the vehicle. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is shown by experiments.

This paper proposes a method of analyzing a human walk environment using MY VISION. MY VISION is an ego-camera and a computer system which analyzes a video obtained from the ego-camera to acquire certain visual information useful for human daily activities. The system is expected to be a virtual eye of a visually impaired person or the third eye of a pedestrian absorbed in a mobile phone. The proposed method keeps in a database the background images of key points along a sidewalk and judges if a MY VISION user is walking along the sidewalk or if he/she has come to a crosswalk by referring to the backgrounds. If the former, the method finds a safe road region on the sidewalk, whereas, if the latter, it searches for the crosswalk for finding an appropriate walk direction and a traffic light to know the proper timing to cross it. Experimental results show effectiveness of the proposed method.

A method of 3-D shape recovery employing uncalibrated cameras is described. Three-dimensional shape recovery has long been studied to date and has various application fields. An established method for 3-D shape recovery is based on stereo cameras which necessitates camera calibration in advance. In this paper, a 3-D shape recovery method by uncalibrated cameras is presented, which ranges from the recovery of partial shape of an object to its entire shape. One of the main advantages of the present method is that the shape recovery is not restricted to a video capture site such as a studio, if only videos are able to be taken by cameras.

A Method of Describing a Self-occlusive Motion - A Reverse Motion History Image Reviewed

This paper proposes a new method of describing a self-occlusive human motion, particularly in the depth direction, which has been considered little in the motion/action recognition studies to date in spite of its importance in our daily life. A Motion History Image (MHI) is a well-known method of describing a motion by a single gray value image, but it suffers from a self-occlusion problem in which present motion overwrites past motion. To solve this difficulty, a Reverse description MHI(RMHI) is proposed in the paper. RMHI and the original MHI are both employed for motion representation in the proposed method; the former for approach motion, whereas the latter for leave motion. In the experiment on motion recognition, motions are described by RMHI or MHI according to motion direction, transformed then to Hu moment vectors, and finally recognized employing the k-nearest neighbor. Experimental results show effectiveness of the RMHI description.
