The demand for sustainable and renewable resources has significantly increased in recent decades. Cellulose, as a potential and abundant resource in industry, offers promising prospects. As a biological polymer primarily originating from lignocellulosic biomass, cellulose is biodegradable and recyclable, making it an attractive candidate for mitigating environmental issues. In this research, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are modified using 1-naphthoic acid (1-NA) through an esterification reaction in a tosyl chloride/pyridine solvent system to produce fluorophore-labeled cellulose. Various characterization methods such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used to investigate the success of the modification reaction. Cellulose modification results in a decrease in the thermal stability of cellulose by lowering the degradation temperature. The glass-transition temperature (Tg) is observed after inducing the naphthoate side chain, which is around 160 °C. The cellulose naphthoate exhibits strong ultraviolet (UV) absorption peaks at around 282 nm and presents good fluorescence properties. Herein, it can be used in fluorescence coatings, sensors, and also packaging.

Catalytic efficiency and stability of biomass-derived sulfonated graphene catalysts in microwave-enhanced biodiesel production 査読有り国際誌

The strategic integration of bio-based catalytic design principles and the intricacies of microwave irradiation offers a viable path to improving the sustainability and efficiency of biodiesel production. In this work, we produced novel biomass-derived sulfonated graphene oxide (bGO-SO3H) and reduced graphene oxide (brGO-SO3H), examining their collaborative effects with microwave irradiation on reaction efficacy. Sulfonation in catalysts was evident through 1) reduced mass loss during thermal decomposition (bGO-SO3H: 34.5 %; brGO-SO3H: 29.4 %) compared to precursors (bGO: 55.6 %; brGO: 20.3 %), indicating decreased oxygen-containing functional groups; 2) higher TPD-acidic sites (bGO-SO3H: 3.17 mmol g−1; brGO-SO3H: 3.24 mmol g−1), supported by titration-acid density (bGO-SO3H: 2.97 mmol g−1; brGO-SO3H: 3.83 mmol g−1); and 3) additional C1s peaks attributed to C-S bonds in sulfonic moieties and a significant increase in sp2 carbon content compared to their precursors, confirmed by ID/IG ratio reduction (bGO-SO3H: 1.09 to 0.98, brGO-SO3H: 0.99 to 0.95). Despite modest surface areas (18–44 m2/g), both catalysts exhibited significantly elevated acid densities (0.05–4.83 mmol g−1) post-sulfonation. Under optimized conditions (2 wt% catalysts, 25:1 methanol-to-oil ratio, 25 min at 75 °C), bGO-SO3H yielded 90.97 % FAME yield, while brGO-SO3H achieved 97.45 % with a reduced dosage (1.5 wt%), shorter time (20 min), and less methanol (20:1). Despite catalytic deactivation, our study demonstrates reduced catalyst consumption, a lower reaction temperature, and a shortened conversion time compared to prior findings, thereby enhancing the efficiency of biodiesel production.

This study leverages the autoclave-assisted method to explore a range of acid catalysts (H2SO4, HCl, HNO3, H3PO4) and solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone, 2-butanol, 2-propanol) for lignin extraction, with a focus on identifying optimal efficiency-enhancing combinations. By contrasting the performance of various acid catalysts and solvents, this work transcends previous efforts in this field. Notably, H2SO4 yields the highest lignin recovery (44.7 %) but with lower purity (78.4 %) compared to HCl (85.7 %) in the same solvent. Methanol yields the highest recovery (45.1 %), yet lower purity (79.2 %) than ethanol (85.7 %) with a similar catalyst. A pivotal improvement lies in the elucidation of structural purity, substantiated by IR and NMR resulting signals, supported by microscale morphology and chemical composition (SEM-EDX). This study extends current understanding, providing profound insights into optimizing extraction procedures for producing lignin with desired attributes.

As the most abundant natural polymer in nature, cellulose has become the promising alternative raw material to replace fossil-based polymer. Owing to the presence of innumerable hydroxyl groups, various approaches are employed to render processability of cellulose. Herein, a sustainable esterification strategy, mechanochemical-assisted esterification, was developed to produce cellulose oleate (CO) with only a small amount of solvent. The differences in reactivity between all types of cellulose were elucidated. According to thermal stability analysis, the degradation temperature decreased after modification due to the substitution of the long oleoyl group. High degree of substitution (DS) of CO also possessed glass transition temperature (Tg) based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. Herewith, the processability of cellulose was introduced after modification. In this study, bamboo waste cellulose nanofiber oleate (BW CNF-OA) showed the highest DS (2.28) among the COs. Its higher surface reactivity due to the high surface aspect ratio led to a higher quantity of fatty acids attached to the cellulose. For the mechanical properties, low DS of COs exhibited higher tensile strength values. In a nutshell, this greener approach is more favorable than conventional chemical esterification in terms of reduced solvent dosage and improved sustainability.

A cellulose fatty acid ester consisting solely of natural organic compounds is synthesized by heterogeneous esterification. Solid soap, a natural product-based compound, is used as a mixed fatty acid source. The synthesized cellulose ester can be readily processed into a semi-transparent film. Mechanical properties of the cellulose ester are also investigated.

Photocatalysis has gained attention as a viable wastewater remediation technique. However, the difficulty of recovering powder-based photocatalyst has often become a major limitation for their on-site practical application. Herein, we report on the successful in-situ preparation of a novel three-dimensional (3D) photocatalyst consisting of Cu2O/TiO2 loaded on a cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/reduced graphene hydrogel (rGH) via facile hydrothermal treatment and freeze-drying. The 3D macrostructure not only provides a template for the anchoring of Cu2O and TiO2 but also provides an efficient electron transport pathway for enhanced photocatalytic activity. The results showed that the Cu2O and TiO2 were uniformly loaded onto the aerogel framework resulting in the composites with large surface area with exposed actives sites. As compared to bare rGH, CNF/rGH, Cu2O/CNF/rGH and TiO2/CNF/rGH, the Cu2O/TiO2/CNF/rGH showed improved photocatalytic activity for methyl orange (MO) degradation. MO degradation pathway is proposed based on GC-MS analysis. The enhanced photoactivity can be attributed to the charge transfer and electron-hole separation from the synergistic effect of Cu2O/TiO2 anchored on CNF/rGH. In terms of their anti-bacterial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, the synergistic effect of the Cu2O/TiO2 anchored on the CNF/rGH framework showed excellent activity towards the bacteria.

Amid growing concerns about antibiotic resistance in livestock systems, there is a global shift toward identifying plant-based alternatives to conventional synthetic feed additives. This study explored the physicochemical characteristics of raw Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and assessed its viability as a low-cost, functional feed additive for colored broiler chicken diets. Comprehensive characterization was conducted on the raw grass, revealing structural features and functional groups characteristic of bioactive, fibrous biomass. A subsequent feeding trial was conducted with 216 Sasso broiler chicks divided among six dietary regimens: a negative control (basal diet), a positive control (100 mg/kg oxytetracycline), and four supplementation levels of P. purpureum grass meal (1.25 to 5.00 g/kg). The highest supplementation level (5.00 g/kg) significantly enhanced growth performance (p < 0.05), reducing feed conversion ratio (FCR) while maintaining low feed intake. Economic analyses demonstrated that this treatment yielded the greatest profitability, exhibiting superior net profit margin, break-even efficiency, and margin of safety. These findings indicated P. purpureum as a promising phytogenic feed additive with dual benefits of enhancing production efficiency and promoting sustainable poultry farming.

This review provides a comprehensive, analytical assessment of 3D-printed adsorbents, critically evaluating their materials, fabrication methodologies, and performance metrics. The materials discussed include polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolites, biopolymers, carbon-based materials, and hybrid composites, all of which are evaluated in terms of their adsorption efficiency, selectivity, and functionalization strategies. Oriented and uniform thin films of solution-processable organic semiconducting copolymer PFO-DBT were fabricated using a recently developed unidirectional floating film transfer (FTM) method and used as an active semiconductor on surface passivated Si/SiO2 as gate dielectric to fabricate organic phototransistor (OPT) in the bottom gate top contact device architecture. The influence of different passivation of SiO2 such as an ultrathin spin-coated cyclic transparent optical polymer (CYTOP) and the self-assembled monolayer of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) on anisotropic charge transport and device performance of OPTs have been systematically investigated. FTM-processed thin films provided good optical anisotropy in thin films and electrical anisotropy in the OPTs. With improved surface properties and enhanced anisotropies, the device showed a charge carrier mobility of 7.8 × 10-3 cm2/V-sec, on/off ratio in the order of 105, and a threshold voltage of -4V under dark conditions. OPTs fabricated in this work demonstrated photosensitivity nearly of order 104 and a corresponding responsivity of 17 A/W under the illumination of 525 nm monochromatic green light with a low power density of 0.15 mW/cm2. The results are promising for making OPTs with enhanced mobility, photosensitivity and photo-responsivity in the visible region.

Temperature-dependent deoxygenation during sulfonation for graphene oxide reduction 査読有り国際誌

The objective of this study was to elucidate the sulfonation behaviour of graphene oxide (GO) across a temperature range of 50 °C, 100 °C, and 150 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. Analysis revealed a significant reduction in –OH, C-O, and O-C-O functional groups, facilitating a substantial conversion from sp3 to sp2 carbon hybridization. Specifically, the sp2 carbon content increased from 37.43 ± 2.0 % in GO to 50.32 ± 2.5 % in GO-SO3H50, 43.72 ± 3.0 % in GO-SO3H100, and 47.92 ± 2.8 % in GO-SO3H150. At higher temperatures, deoxygenation led to a decrease in C-S density due to the pronounced removal of oxygen moieties, which constrained the availability of functional groups for −SO3H binding. SEM imaging corroborated that sulfonated GO retained its disordered stacked layer configuration, consistent with the precursor. These results affirm that sulfonation is a viable alternative for synthesizing reduced graphene oxide (rGO), with enhanced sp2 carbon content and modified structural characteristics.

This review examines recent progress in using rare earth-based photocatalysts and their composites to degrade environmental pollutants. Rare earth elements (REEs), recognized for their unique electronic configurations and exceptional optical properties, have become effective dopants and co-catalysts, enhancing the capabilities of traditional semiconductor photocatalysts. Key enhancement strategies, including doping, co-doping, surface functionalization, and heterostructure formation, are analyzed to illustrate how they improve photocatalytic efficiency, stability, and selectivity. The review details studies on the photocatalytic degradation of various pollutants, such as dyes, antibiotics, and pesticides. It highlights how REEs contribute to better light absorption, efficient charge separation, and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The review also addresses challenges with the long-term stability of doped photocatalysts, like structural degradation and dopant leaching, suggesting possible solutions to enhance durability. By providing a broad overview, this review aims to guide researchers in designing next-generation photocatalysts for environmental remediation and to support the development of more sustainable water treatment technologies. Additionally, emerging trends such as green synthesis, integration with carbon-based nanocomposites, and scalable photocatalytic applications stressed REEs’ potential in advancing eco-friendly water treatment solutions, aligning with global sustainability objectives.

This study presents the successful synthesis of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) using a hydrothermal method and its application as a modifier on glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the presence of V–O stretching vibrations, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis verified a pure monoclinic BiVO4 crystal structure. Morphological analysis revealed spherical BiVO4 particles, which contributed to enhanced electrochemical performance when integrated into the modified GCE. BiVO4/GCE exhibited superior electrochemical performance, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) studies, in detecting analytes including hexacyanoferrate, tetracycline (TC), and levofloxacin (LVX). BiVO4 modification significantly boosted the performance of the electrode in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and electron transfer kinetics. These enhancements can be attributed to BiVO4’s efficient electron transport and electrocatalytic activity. Notably, BiVO4/GCE exhibited the potential for simultaneous detection of multiple antibiotics showing its versatility for diverse electrochemical sensing applications. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) for TC were 27.9 µM and 83.3 µM, respectively, while for LVX, they were 7.39 µM and 22.3 µM. Overall, these findings position BiVO4/GCE as a promising platform for advanced electrochemical detection and analysis across various fields.

The growing contamination of water sources by tetracycline (TC) antibiotics presents significant environmental and public health challenges. Porous adsorbents, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene (Gr), biochar (BC), clay, zeolites, and porous polymers, have emerged as promising solutions due to their high surface area, tunable porosity, and modifiable chemistry. This review systematically explores recent advancements in the design and modification of these materials to enhance their efficiency in TC removal from water. Key strategies such as surface functionalization, composite formation, and doping are discussed, emphasizing their impact on TC adsorption capacity and performance. Additionally, the review addresses the practical challenges of implementing these modified adsorbents, including regeneration, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. Synergistic approaches combining multiple modification techniques are highlighted as pathways to next-generation adsorbents with superior performance. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the state-of-the-art in porous adsorbent technology for antibiotic remediation, pointing towards innovative solutions for water decontamination and future directions in environmental pollution control.

There has been a growing interest in using natural alternatives to synthetic additives in animal feed. This study aimed to examine the physicochemical properties of signal grass (Brachiaria decumbens) and its cost-benefit application in broiler production. The characterization was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A feeding trial involving 216 Sasso broiler chicks was conducted to assess the economic value of including B. decumbens grass meal in their diets. The chicks were divided into six groups, with Treatments 1 and 2 serving as controls (without antibiotics and with oxytetracycline, respectively). Treatments 3 to 6 received diets supplemented with 1.25, 2.50, 3.75, and 5.00 g/kg of B. decumbens grass meal without antibiotics. Body weight and feed intake were monitored over eight weeks to determine growth performance and feed conversion ratio. Broilers in Treatment 6, which received 5.00 g/kg of the grass meal, showed significantly improved growth (p < 0.05). A cost-benefit analysis revealed that T6 was the most profitable, suggesting B. decumbens' potential as an effective feed additive for broilers.

Biochar (BC), often obtained via thermochemical conversion methods of biomass, has emerged as a versatile material with significant potential in electrochemical sensing applications. This review critically examines the recent advancements in the development of BC-based sensors for the electrochemical determination of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, phenolic compounds, and microplastics. BC-based electrochemical sensors have emerged as a promising alternative due to their sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and excellent electrochemical properties. The unique physicochemical properties of BC, including its high surface area, porosity, and functional groups, contribute to its effectiveness as a sensor material. The review begins with an overview of the synthesis methods for BC, highlighting the activation strategies on its structural and electrochemical properties. Next, the functionalization of BC and its integration into electrochemical sensor platforms are explored. The performance of BC-based sensors is evaluated using electrochemical focusing on their sensitivity, selectivity, detection limits, and stability. Future directions for research are proposed, emphasizing the need for further optimization, miniaturization, and integration of BC-based sensors into portable and on-site analytical devices.

In exploring the development of stimuli-responsive surfaces capable of reversible wettability switching, our study delved into the efficacy of vapor-phase-assisted surface photo-polymerization (photo-VASP). This innovative approach modulated Si-wafer and cotton surfaces’ chemical and physical attributes. The method involved strategically using a blend of hydrophobic and hydrophilic vinyl monomers, enabling fine-tuning surface properties. By carefully selecting monomer combinations, we achieved seamless copolymerization, effectively grafting the polymers onto the surfaces. The efficacy of this grafting process was validated through contact angle measurements post-solvent extraction of unattached polymers. Crucially, the surfaces engineered through this process demonstrated a remarkable capacity for reversible wettability switching, a feature dynamically controlled by the application and removal of external stimuli. This capability underscores the potential of our approach in creating advanced functional surfaces with tunable properties.

This study compares the efficiency of producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) utilizing modified eggshell based calcium oxide (CaO) catalysts improved with magnesium-aluminum hydrotalcite to pure eggshell based CaO by microwave-heated transesterification. The study optimized process parameters for a methanol to oil molar ratio of 9:1 at 65°C for 30 minutes, with the goal of enhancing catalyst stability and basicity for effective biodiesel synthesis. The study demonstrated that the eggshell based CaO/Mg-Al catalyst was better in biodiesel yield (89.44%) than the pure eggshell based CaO and exhibited improved stability and catalytic activity through gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis for fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) composition and biodiesel yield.

This study demonstrates the potential of Fe-doped BiVO<inf>4</inf> as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The Fe-doped BiVO<inf>4</inf> was synthesized using the hydrothermal method, resulting in a monoclinic heterostructure with a crystallite size ranging from 27.37 to 29.10 nm and an optical band gap of 2.69–2.87 eV. Photocatalytic tests revealed that 3 wt% Fe doping exhibited the highest degradation efficiency, removing 73.37% of TC in 120 min under a low-power (13 W) UV lamp. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the improved electron–hole separation and optimized Fe doping concentration, which facilitated more efficient light absorption and charge carrier dynamics. Additionally, antibacterial tests confirmed the catalyst’s ability to inactivate Staphylococcus aureus, even in the absence of light, demonstrating its dual functionality in both pollutant degradation and bacterial inactivation. The cost analysis revealed that the synthesized Fe-doped BiVO<inf>4</inf> costs RM 8.17 per gram, further enhancing its appeal for scalable and cost-effective applications. These findings highlight the versatility of Fe-doped BiVO<inf>4</inf> as a photocatalyst for addressing antibiotic-based pollution and waterborne pathogens, making it a promising candidate for practical applications in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation. These findings contribute to global efforts in mitigating waterborne antibiotic and microbial pollution, particularly in regions where access to high-energy treatment technologies is limited.

Mine tailings (MT), a byproduct of mining operations, often pose significant environmental and economic challenges. Traditional disposal methods often lead to contamination of water bodies, soil, and air, negatively impacting ecosystems and human health. To address these issues, this review explores the potential of transforming MT into valuable functional materials through a waste-to-value approach. By employing various modification strategies, the physicochemical properties of MT can be significantly improved, unlocking their potential for diverse applications. This review investigates the conversion of tailings into functional materials for wastewater treatment and energy applications. Additionally, the study highlights recent advancements in the recovery of functional materials from MT, identifying key challenges and opportunities for future research and development. This review contributes to a more circular economy and sustainable mining practices by exploring the potential of MT-derived functional materials.

Widespread pesticides use in agriculture has led to significant groundwater and food contamination, posing severe risks to both human health and the environment. Real-time detection of these emerging contaminants remains a formidable challenge. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors have remained a viable technique for overcoming the limits ascribed to their ultra-sensitivity and rapid detection times as well as excellent sensitivity, reliability, and selectivity. This comprehensive review will encompass the most recent advancements in the utilization of functional materials such as metal–organic framework, MXene, carbon organic framework, carbon nanotubes, and graphene modifiers for the detection of a myriad of pesticides via electrochemical detection techniques, electrode materials, electrolyte solutions, and sample matrices. This review compiles performance data, including detection limits and linear ranges, for various sensing platforms. Finally, the write-up will discuss advanced sensor technology and address the improvements made on electrochemical sensors and biosensors for pesticide detection, which will be important in future studies on pesticide determination.

To improve the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) performance, the advantages of the unidirectional floating film transfer method (UFTM) are utilized to fabricate uniaxially aligned thin film of a liquid crystalline semiconducting polymer (SCP) upon a SiO<inf>2</inf> surface modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkyl-silane. We deposited the SAM of octadecyl-triethoxy silane (OTES) by spin coating onto the SiO<inf>2</inf> gate dielectric surface to make the surface hydrophobic and promote the molecular self-assembly of aligned SCP. The electrical anisotropy of the UFTM fabricated thin films of poly [2,5-bis (3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl) thieno [3,2-b] thiophene] (PBTTT) C-14 were studied by constructing parallel and perpendicular OFETs. Parallel OFET exhibits a mobility of 0.13 cm2 V−1sec−1, a dark on-off ratio of 2.6 × 105, and 0V V<inf>th</inf>. Further, OFETs are utilized as organic phototransistors (OPTs) under monochromatic green light (525 nm) illumination at an intensity of 3 mWcm−2. The photosensitivity and responsivity of parallel OPT are 6.3 × 104 and 81 AW−1, respectively, which are much more pronounced compared to that of the corresponding perpendicular OPT with the photosensitivity and responsivity of 2 × 102 and 6.2 AW−1, respectively. This work contributes to the advancement of organic photodetector technology, offering valuable guidance for future device development and applications.

This research highlights the use of superheated steam (SHS) treatment to improve the productivity and reduce the energy consumption of CNF processing. SHS treatment conducted at 150°C for 1 and 2 h (SHS1 and SHS2) contributed to the reduction in degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose from oil palm empty fruit bunch. Results exhibited that SHS-treatment reduced the viscosity and number of cycles for CNF processing compared to the untreated cellulose (UT). At the end of wet disc mill processing, CNF-SHS2 viscosity was measured at 60 cP, almost five-fold lesser than that of CNF-UT. The productivity of CNF-SHS2 production improved by almost eight-fold compared to CNF-UT, and the energy consumed to produce CNFSHS2 reduced from 60.5 to 7.4 kWh/kg. All CNF samples produced had an average width of about 10 nm and crystallinity between 54 – 62 %. Our results showed that treatment of cellulose by SHS prior to nanofibrillation contributed to energy efficient nanofibrillation process with improved productivity. The potential energy neutral SHS treatment is demonstrated herein by integrating the energy resource available at the palm oil industry towards sustainable CNF production which would promote the commercial potential of this versatile bio-based material.

In the pursuit of sustainability, oil palm frond (OPF) is emerging as an important renewable resource in Malaysia's thriving palm oil industry, presenting both opportunities and challenges. This review presents an in-depth assessment of the current landscape of the Malaysian palm oil industry, emphasizing the abundance of OPF, logistical difficulties, and current and future potential industrial uses. Amidst the industry's phenomenal expansion, the generation of OPF was estimated at 59.3 and 156.5 million tonnes in 2023 from Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively. Implementing existing and new policies can fully capitalize on the socioeconomic and ecological benefits of integrating OPF into the palm oil supply chain. This offers several advantages, including economic growth, environmental and sustainability practices, resource optimization, support for innovation and commercialization, energy diversification, and investment attraction. The future of OPF utilization in Malaysia lies in developing more valuable applications and improving integrated biomass techniques. Emerging technologies like enzymatic hydrolysis, lignocellulosic fractionation, biosugars, bioethanol, ruminant feed, and biochar production offer great potential to unlock OPF's full benefits. However, technological hurdles and limited industrial implementation continue to hamper the widespread adoption of these innovative solutions. Future research for enhancing the efficiency of conversion processes, evaluating the economic viability of OPF-based products, and investigating the environmental impacts of OPF valorization would be crucial in unlocking the full potential of this abundant and promising biomass resource.

Alternative of using organic and biomass residues as additives or reinforcements in the production of composite materials has attracted great attention since the 2000s. However, when lignocellulosic biomass is used as natural fiber in composite production, it may have some disadvantages such as low interfacial bonding with the matrix phase. The most common methods used to strengthen the bonding between the matrix phase and the additive material is to use maleic anhydride (MA) as a compatibilizer and some chemicals such as dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as reaction initiators to increase the compatibilizing effect of MA. Therefore, in this study, olive pomace oil maleate (OPOMA) was prepared to be used in the production of polylactic acid (PLA) composites. Olive pomace obtained with ionic liquid pretreatment (OP-IL) in the previous studies of the authors and OPOMA were used in composite production with a biodegradable polymer of PLA. The composite was obtained by mixing 95PLA+5OP-IL by weight in twin-screw extruder at 190 oC for 10 minutes. Under the same conditions, the effect of OPOMA was evaluated by adding 0.5%, 1% and 2% ratio to PLA + OP-IL. In FTIR spectrum of OPOMA, a new symmetrical and asymmetric C=O bands were formed differently from olive oil. While the tensile strength of the PLA+OP mixture was approximately 10 MPa; the tensile strength value of PLA+OP-IL and PLA+OP-IL+OPOMA was around 60 MPa. The elasticity modulus showed less change compared to other mechanical properties. To conclude, it can be emphasized that oil maleates of lignocellulosic biomasses can be promising compatibilizer for biodegradable composite matrices.

Behaviour and mechanics of phenolic sorption by novel bio-based graphene derivatives as adsorbents 査読有り国際誌

Phenolic compounds, notorious for their environmental and health hazards, demand efficient removal from wastewater. Our research leads in synthesizing bio-based graphene derivatives from biomass-derived lignin, such as graphene oxide (bGO) and reduced graphene oxide (brGO), and these materials show promise in effectively removing hydrophobic pollutants like phenol and tannic acid. Hence, this study investigated the mechanical and dynamical aspects of their sorptions by bGO and brGO. Both adsorbents demonstrated a comparable adsorption pattern, with enhanced efficiency observed at higher adsorbent dosage, prolonged contact time, neutralized pH solutions, and elevated temperatures. Of note, phenol is removed at a much greater rate (>94%) than tannic acid (>84%) by both adsorbents at a dosage of 180 mg L−1, pH 6.5, 900 min, and 25 °C. The Freundlich model provided the best fit for the isotherm data of both phenol (R2 = 0.99) and tannic acid (R2 = 0.98), while the pseudo-second-order model effectively described the adsorption kinetics of phenol (R2 = 0.99) and tannic acid (R2 = 0.99). The determined activation energy exceeds 5.88 kJ mol−1, affirming the prevalence of physisorption as the dominant mechanism in the adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption process is endothermic (ΔH) and occurs spontaneously (ΔG), indicating a random (ΔS) nature. However, the percentage removal plunged considerably after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, attributed to the alterations of active sites on bGO and brGO.

Lignocellulosic biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs): A novel approach utilizing organosolv lignin from Moso bamboo waste 査読有り国際誌

Converting lignocellulosic materials to carbon quantum dots (CQDs) has garnered significant interest to transform biomass wastes into highly valuable products. We chose to use lignin as our feedstock because high-value products more readily utilize cellulose and hemicellulose. Lignin, arguably the most underutilized and complex biopolymer within any biomass, presents an appealing yet overlooked opportunity. While some may argue that lignin-based CQDs are no longer groundbreaking, this is because existing studies typically rely on commercially available lignin, ignoring biomass-derived sources. Therefore, in our pioneering research, we utilized organosolv lignin, prized for its structural purity and extracted from Moso bamboo waste, as the carbon source in a facile two-step technique to synthesize luminous CQDs. The process involved the addition of 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid, a mild-organic acid that acted as a source for both nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S). A 12-h hydrothermal treatment at 200 °C with 0.1 M of acid addition attained the best result. The resultant CQDs display strong green fluorescence, with the highest quantum yield of 17.7% seen in N and S co-doped CQDs. With their obvious and specific fluorescence quenching impact on Fe3+, CQDs demonstrate great potential as a fluorescent nanoprobe for metal ion detection. This CQD nanoprobe responds very sensitively to Fe3+ between 0 and 500 μM (R2 = 0.9803), with a detection limit of 0.15 μM. This research not only presents a unique alternative nanoprobe for the sensing field using renewable biomass lignin, but it also paves the way for the long-term, cost-effective, and scalable manufacturing of CQDs.

Enhanced reaction performance is what has piqued interest in using graphene-based catalysts in producing biodiesel. However, in-depth analyses were lacking from a kinetic and thermodynamic standpoint. This means that a well-designed experiment is necessary to determine the effect that the graphene catalysts have on the reaction rates and yields. This work addresses the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of heterogeneously catalyzed transesterification using sulphonated biomass-derived graphene catalysts, i.e., bGO-SO3H and brGO-SO3H. It was accomplished using the pseudo-first order mechanism and the Eyring-Polanyi equation, with all data fitting satisfactorily in both models at the ideal reaction temperature of 353.15 K, resulting in R2 values of 0.9784 (bGO-SO3H) and 0.9884 (brGO-SO3H). The calculated activation energy (Ea) was determined to be 44.45 and 51.73 kJ mol-1 for bGO- and brGO-SO3H, respectively. Additionally, the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) values were determined at −38.09 and −31.81 kJ mol−1 for bGO- and brGO-SO3H, respectively. Meanwhile, the values for ΔH and ΔS were obtained as 41.69 kJ mol−1 and 225.93 J mol−1 K−1, respectively, and 48.96 kJ mol−1 and 228.72 J mol−1 K−1, respectively. These collective outcomes collectively signify the endothermic nature of the reaction and their spontaneity, particularly under elevated temperature conditions.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) offer the potential for sustainable semiconductor devices due to their low cost and inherent molecular self-assembly. Enhanced crystallinity and molecular orientation in thin films of solution-processable CPs have significantly improved organic electronic device performance. In this work, three methods, namely spin coating, dip coating, and unidirectional floating-film transfer method (UFTM), were utilized with their parametric optimization for fabricating RR-P3HT films. These films were then utilized for their characterization via optical and microstructural analysis to elucidate dominant roles of molecular orientation and crystallinity in controlling charge transport in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). OFETs fabricated by RR-P3HT thin films using spin coating and dip coating displayed field-effect mobility (μ) of 8.0 × 10−4 cm2V−1s−1 and 1.3 × 10−3 cm2V−1s−1, respectively. This two-time enhancement in µ for dip-coated films was attributed to its enhanced crystallinity. Interestingly, UFTM film-based OFETs demonstrated μ of 7.0 × 10−2 cm2V−1s−1, >100 times increment as compared to its spin-coated counterpart. This superior device performance is attributed to the synergistic influence of higher crystallinity and molecular orientation. Since the crystallinity of dip-coated and UFTM-thin films are similar, ~50 times improved µ of UFTM thin films, this suggests a dominant role of molecular orientation as compared to crystallinity in controlling the charge transport.

Optimization and kinetic studies for biodiesel production from dairy waste scum oil via microwave assisted transesterification 査読有り国際誌

This study presents an investigation of the optimization and kinetic aspects of the microwave (MW) heating transesterification process for converting dairy waste scum oil (DWSO) into biodiesel using lithium impregnated calcium oxide from eggshell (Li-ECaO) as a catalyst. The transesterification was done via microwave heating while varying catalyst loading (1 – 5 wt%), methanol to oil molar ratio (6 – 18:1), temperature (55 – 75⁰C), and reaction time in the range of 5 – 25 min. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimized the process parameters, yielding an impressive 90.5% biodiesel yield. The optimal operating conditions were determined 3 wt% catalyst loading, 18:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, a reaction temperature of 65ºC, and a reaction time of 25 minutes. A thorough kinetic analysis of the transesterification reaction for the MW heating transesterification of DWSO by Li-ECaO was performed at various temperatures (45 – 75ºC). The pseudo-first order kinetic study of the reaction revealed a moderately low activation energy of 38.86 kJ/mol and a high pre-exponential factor of 1141.27 s−1, which is consistent with previous studies. Importantly, the observed activation energy was lower than that of conventional methods, highlighting the potential of MW heating as a viable technique for future biodiesel production, and using wastes such as DWSO and eggshell could contribute to being greener and environmentally friendly.

Time and again we hear of calls made by countries to ban palm oil over deforestation. Pressing on, the critics demand the commodity be certified as per international standards and the cultivation to comply with responsible agroecological practices. This urgent and growing concern requires the rethinking of the current operations to be restructured in such a way that it would be cleaner and greener. The Malaysian government has reaffirmed its commitment to mainstream palm oil sustainability by fully embracing United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), following through on the 12th Malaysian Plan (2021–2025). Malaysian industry players and stakeholders also have joined hands to pursue the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and/or Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification with full traceability, as part and parcel of corporate sustainability. However, downstream activities have yet to be improved. The biorefinery concept is proposed to utilize excess resources at plantations and the mills into a wide range of bioproducts and bioenergy in various applications. This review puts together the evidence of technological progress in oil palm biomass valorization, in line with the zero-emission system that will bring this to meet the circular bioeconomy agenda. Also, technological maturity and commercialization of oil palm biomass-derived products are scrutinized, underlining the challenges of the concept proposed.

High flexibility and solution processability have made all polymer organic pho-totransistors (AP-OPTs) a suitable candidate for various wearable and smart home applications. However, fabrication of the AP-OPTs via the solution process is still challenging owing to the possible degradation of the polymer gate dielectric layer by the solvent of the organic semiconductor, resulting in hampered device performance. To circumvent this issue, the unidirectional floating film transfer method, having the least impact on the underlying organic dielectric film, has been used to obtain highly oriented poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin film. Further, the effect of P3HT film orientation with respect to the channel has been investigated. Results revealed that the device with parallel orientation performed better with photosensitivity of 5 × 103 and photoresponsivity of 133 A/W.

Antibiotics have undeniably served as a crucial factor in protecting both human and animal populations from infections caused by bacteria. Electrochemical sensing has become a promising and developing alternative for measuring antibiotic residuals in various matrices such as environment and food. It is crucial to give priority to the advancement of technologies that have enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. Electrochemical sensors provide a more efficient and accurate method for detecting the presence of antibiotic compounds, as opposed to traditional laboratory detection procedures. This review seeks to offer an in-depth overview of the recent progress achieved in the past five years in detecting different antibiotics using a range of electrochemical sensors. These sensors include those based on MXene, MOF, graphene, and polymers. The fabrication and utilization of these sensors not only represent a substantial advancement in detection capacities but also create opportunities for tackling the challenges presented by antibiotic residues in the environment. This review also explores into the challenges, opportunities, and prospects associated with the aforementioned electrochemical sensors, offering a holistic perspective on their role in mitigating the environmental impacts of synthetic antibiotics. The reduction of nitrophenols is a broadly accepted model for catalytic processes. Incorporating nanostructures into porous materials is becoming more widely acknowledged for its great importance. This strategy has attracted much interest because of its exceptional features imparted on the catalysts, offering enormous promise in accelerating the reduction of nitrophenols. In recent years, various nanostructures have been embedded to a wide range of porous materials, such as carbon, silica, metal-organic frameworks, and other inorganic materials. These porous frameworks possess unique physical and chemical characteristics, making them well-suited for catalytic applications. This thorough review begins by explaining the mechanism of nitrophenol reduction, exploring several nanostructures based on noble metals that are commonly used for catalytic reduction. Following that, a systematic description and comparison of nitrophenols catalytic reduction using various nanostructures on porous templates such as carbon-based, silica-based, zeolite-based, polymer-based, and metal-organic frameworks (MOF) were explained. In addition, this paper also examines several functional materials to enhance the catalytic reduction of nitrophenols. Herein, this write-up intends to narrow the knowledge gap on the recently synthesized catalysts and the practical requirements for removing nitrophenol. This write-up is hoped to offer valuable insights that can aid in the practical utilization of these catalysts for wastewater remediation applications.

In the past year, there has been significant progress in the utilization of electrochemical strategies for the determination of harmful substances. Among those, the electrochemical determination of nicotine (NIC) has continued to be of significant interest ascribed to the global health concern of e-cigarette products, nowadays. Electrochemical sensors have become promising tools for the detection of NIC ascribed to their high sensitivity, selectivity, and ease of use. This review article provides a concise overview of the advanced developments in electrochemical sensors for NIC detection using modified functional materials such as carbon-based materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOF), MXene, polymer, and metallic based modifiers. The sensitivity of electrochemical sensors can be improved by modifying them with these conductive materials ascribed to their physical and chemical properties. The review also addresses the challenges and future perspectives in the field, including sensitivity and selectivity improvements, stability and reproducibility issues, integration with data analysis techniques, and emerging trends. In conclusion, this review article may be of interest to researchers intending to delve into the development of functional electrochemical sensors in future studies. Invasive plants threaten natural ecosystems due to their rapid spread and growth. This study used duckweed (DW) to develop a low-cost and sustainable adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The adsorbent was analysed using various techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) identified oxygen-containing functional groups on the DW surface that enhanced its adsorption capacity. Optimal adsorption conditions were achieved with an adsorbent amount of 20 mg, a pH of 10, and an initial MB concentration of 10 mg/L. Experimental data matched the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model across all concentrations, including 10 mg/L (Qe = 73.53 mg/g), 20 mg/L (Qe = 183.15 mg/g), and 50 mg/L (Qe = 200.80 mg/g). The Temkin isotherm model fit the data better than the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Adsorption decreased with increasing temperatures (ΔGo = − 7.56 to − 8.06 kJ/mol, ΔHo = − 4.93 kJ/mol, ΔSo = − 6.76 kJ/mol). The primary adsorption mechanisms included electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π electron interactions. The production cost of the DW adsorbent was estimated at RM 14.40 per kg, making it a more affordable alternative. With its high adsorption capacity and wide availability, DW is a promising material for controlling dye pollution in wastewater.

Herein, various silver nanowires (AgNWs) deposition techniques, i.e., spin coating, Mayer rod coating, and spray coating are used to fabricate ZnO/P3HT-based double-side hybrid photodetectors and their photoresponse for 520 nm green light has been compared. The electrodes are coated over the polyethylene terephthalate sheet separately and laminated over the indium tin oxide (ITO)/ZnO/P3HT. Mayer rod-coated electrodes are found to have a sheet resistance (Rsh) of 24 Ω Sq.−1 and a light transmission of 91%. Additionally, spin- and spray-coated AgNW electrodes exhibit Rsh of 20 and 23 Ω Sq.−1, respectively, along with 80% and 85% transparencies. As the device consists of transparent electrodes on both sides, it can detect light from both the top and bottom sides. Mayer rod-coated AgNW electrode-based device has produced better photosensitivity of 1500 (for ITO side illumination) and 630 (for AgNWs side illumination) at λ = 525 nm. Further, the device has demonstrated the responsivity of 124 mAW−1 and specific detectivity of 3 × 1011Jones.

Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys have high magnetic flux density and low loss. Therefore, in this study, the magnetic domain structure of the ball-milled magnetic powders of these nanocrystalline alloys was observed using a Kerr effect microscope. The effect of strain removal heat treatment on the magnetic properties of the powder was also investigated by observing and comparing the magnetic domain structure of the milled powder before and after heat treatment during the preparation process of the nanocrystalline-milled powder. Our findings showed that the strain removal heat treatment changed the size and shape of the magnetic domains to a simple structure. In addition, the domain wall motion was found to be sensitive to the magnetic field, resulting in soft magnetic properties.

The Wise method, which is known in wood science as a technique for the quantitative analysis of holocellulose, was applied as a pre-treatment to prepare a porous precursor for activated carbon. The precursor has a specific pore size structure derived from the organizational architecture of the natural plant. The lignin in the plant tissue of the bamboo was successfully removed in a stepwise fashion by the Wise method treatment. All the N2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K for the carbonized samples, including the samples treated by the Wise method, were similar in shape. Specifically, they were type I as classified by IUPAC with low-pressure hysteresis, and there was no specific effect of the selective removal of lignin from the carbonized sample. However, after CO2 activation for more than 2 h, samples treated with the Wise method had slit pores, which is type H4 as classified by IUPAC. The slit width calculated by the INNES method, which is the theory for slit-type mesopores, was ca. 2.5 nm. When samples delignified by more than 60% were activated by CO2 for 3 h, the percentage of the micropores in the total pores was ca. 40%. Samples treated by the Wise method for the stepwise selective removal of lignin, should enable pore structure derived from plant tissue to be controlled in the activated carbon.

The palm oil industry produces large quantities of biomass residues that can be utilized to produce value-added products. Oil palm biomass has an average carbon content ranging from 42.7% to 57.9%, with 3.5–27% fixed carbon, making it a promising source of carbonaceous, thermogenic materials. With estimated yearly production hovering around giga-tonnes, rising interest in bio-based carbonaceous products paves the way for new commercial and scientific applications and holds the potential to be worth millions of dollars on the market as society begins to take the climate crisis gravely. Pyrolysis is the most used technique for converting lignocellulosic feedstock into carbon and energy-rich by-products, with the resulting properties being highly dependent on the feedstock and reaction conditions. This process, which occurs at high temperatures in an oxygen-free or low-oxygen environment, improves carbon content, energy density, surface functionality, and porosity. However, given the lack of a precise technical definition for carbon materials and methods available, studies of biochar and activated carbon (AC) are progressively colliding with one another. Therefore, based on their respective backgrounds and methods of synthesis, their differences are outlined in this report. The present review highlights recent progress and development of biochar and AC from oil palm biomass by looking at the technical aspects of product generation and potential applications. Considering the potential use of these biomass materials for in-house and future applications, strategies, challenges and action should be taken by all parties including government, academia, industry, and consumer to foster the sustainability and circular bioeconomy in the oil palm industry.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have emerged as excellent organic semiconducting materials for flexible electronic applications. CPs exhibit a notably fast carrier transport along their main π-conjugated backbone followed by inter-chain hopping compelling the need to form large and ordered domains in thin films. Therefore, the formation of larger domains, along with their orientation, is critical in controlling the electrical properties of CP-based organic electronic devices. However, controlling the molecular ordering along with the formation of large aggregates is a challenge. In this work, the unidirectional floating film transfer method (UFTM) has been utilized to prepare oriented thin films of CPs, which is a highly facile, cost-effective and material utilization efficient technique. We have demonstrated that extent and direction of molecular orientation in the fabricated thin films can be tuned along with the higher degree of aggregation. The rheological aspects, especially viscosity, play a significant role in determining molecular ordering along with the formation of these large aggregates. Active control of viscosity to achieve a stable interfacial viscous system is paramount to achieving this, resulting in a very high mobility of 12.4 cm2V−1s−1.

Catalytic graphitization of biomass-derived ethanosolv lignin using Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn: Microstructural and chemical characterization 査読有り国際誌

Bamboo has just recently emerged as a sustainable source of lignin extraction, paving the way for the development of sophisticated nano- and biomaterials based on lignin. Catalytic pyrolysis effectively synthesized graphitic carbon from biomass resources. This article investigates the influence of various metals (Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn) as catalysts in the catalytic graphitization of bamboo biomass-derived lignin. The graphitization process was carried out through thermal treatments conducted in a tightly closed muffle furnace at 1100 ℃ for a duration of 4 hrs. The metals-catalyzed graphitic carbons appeared flake-like microstructures under SEM with > 80 wt% graphitized carbon composition detected by XPS. Enhancement in the degree of graphitization, crystallite size, interlayer distance, and structural order was achieved within the order of Fe>Co>Ni>Zn. These are corroborated by XRD, indicating Fe-catalyst resulted in lignin graphite with a degree of graphitization of 92.07%, crystallite size (Lc) of 230.2 nm, and interlayer distances of 0.336 nm that are closer to commercial graphite. Raman revealed the Fe-catalysed lignin graphite has a lower defective ratio (ID/IG) of 0.55, while all graphitized lignin showed IG/I2D of > 1.0, indicating multiple layers of graphitic carbon. These findings might pave the way for future high-value graphite-based materials made from low-cost biomass, making it an intriguing prospect.

The fabrication of high-performance Organic Phototransistors (OPTs) by depositing Al-islands atop Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin film coated using the unidirectional floating-film transfer method (UFTM) has been realized. Further, the effect of Al-island thickness on the OPTs’ performance has been intensively investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Atomic force microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis. Under the optimized conditions, OPTs’ mobility and on–off ratio were found to be 2 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1 and 3 × 104, respectively. Further, the device exhibited high photosensitivity of 105, responsivity of 339 A/W, detectivity of 3 × 1014 Jones, and external quantum efficiency of 7.8 × 103% when illuminated with a 525 nm LED laser (0.3 mW/cm2).

This present study optimized the cellulose nanofiber (CNF) loading and melt processing conditions of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) P(HB-co-11% HHx) bionanocomposite fabrication in twin screw extruder by using the response surface methodology (RSM). A face-centered central composite design (CCD) was applied to statistically specify the important parameters, namely CNF loading (1–9 wt.%), rotational speed (20–60 rpm), and temperature (135–175 °C), on the mechanical properties of the P(HB-co-11% HHx) bionanocomposites. The developed model reveals that CNF loading and temperature were the dominating parameters that enhanced the mechanical properties of the P(HB-co-11% HHx)/CNF bionanocomposites. The optimal CNF loading, rotational speed, and temperature for P(HB-co-11% HHx) bionanocomposite fabrication were 1.5 wt.%, 20 rpm, and 160 °C, respectively. The predicted tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus for these optimum conditions were 22.96 MPa, 33.91 MPa, and 1.02 GPa, respectively, with maximum desirability of 0.929. P(HB-co-11% HHx)/CNF bionanocomposites exhibited improved tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus by 17, 6, and 20%, respectively, as compared to the neat P(HB-co-11% HHx). While the crystallinity of P(HB-co-11% HHx)/CNF bionanocomposites increased by 17% under the optimal fabrication conditions, the thermal stability of the P(HB-co-11% HHx)/CNF bionanocomposites was not significantly different from neat P(HB-co-11% HHx).

The effect of the interaction factor between pH and dosage is important in leachate wastewater treatment. This study aims to remove leachate pollutants such as turbidity, total suspended solid (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colour using simultaneous factors of plant-based Tacca leontopetaloides biopolymer flocculant (TBPF) dosage and leachate pH. The flocculation process was carried out through jar test by applying the perikinetic theory and statical analysis (face-centred central composite design). The results found that the optimum leachate pH and TBPF dosage were pH 3 and 150 mg/L, respectively. The highest removal of leachate pollutants reached up to 69% with a second-order perikinetic model; R2 = 0.9545 and k = 9 × 10−6 L/mg/min were obtained. Simultaneous interaction factors between leachate pH and TBPF dosage on turbidity and TSS removal were found significant and hence can be applied in the actual leachate wastewater treatment industry, particularly at the primary stage using the proposed model.

The incorporation of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in graphene-based materials is a growing strategy to overcome the shortcomings presented by conventional antimicrobial nanomaterials derived from metal/metal oxide. In this study, novel cyclic undecapeptides CH1 and CW2 (KRQRFYFRQRK and QNKRFYFRKNQ, respectively) were successfully synthesized. The cyclic peptides were then immobilized on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) surface using a water-soluble carbodiimide (EDCI/HCl) linker. The structural, morphology, and chemical characterizations of the antimicrobial graphene material were carried out using SEM, Raman, FTIR, XRD, and XPS. From our result, the peptide/rGO composite showed an improved antibacterial effect towards gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The enhanced antibacterial property is attributed to the synergistic effect of the sharp edges of rGO and the amphipathic moieties of the cyclic peptides.

Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys have high magnetic flux density and low loss. So, in this study, the magnetic domain structure of ball-milled magnetic powders of these nanocrystalline alloys was observed using a Kerr effect microscope. The effect of strain removal heat treatment on the magnetic properties of the powder was also investigated by observing and comparing the magnetic domain structure of the milled powder before and after heat treatment during the preparation process of the nanocrystalline milled powder. Our findings showed that the strain removal heat treatment changed the size and shape of the magnetic domains to a simple structure. In addition, the magnetic wall motion was found to occur quickly, resulting in soft magnetic properties.

To realize the effective utilization of the end material and its application to a soft magnetic composite, Fe-based nanocrystalline alloy sheets were ball-milled, and platelet particles were obtained, in this work. Instrumental analyses revealed that although a micro strain was introduced into the nanocrystalline α-Fe grains in the achieved alloy powder, almost no changes were found in the amorphous part filled among the grains. The ball-milling treatment greatly increased the coercive force of the pulverized nanocrystalline sheet. Although the coercive force of the alloy powder decreased after the heat treatment, the coercive force remained to be approximately 10 times higher than that of the heat-treated alloy sheet without the ball-milling treatment, even after the heat treatment. The magnetic process of the ball-milled and heat treated nanocrystalline alloy powder will be discussed in detail in the conference based on the obtained results and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy.

As a result of its carbon-dense structure and renewable nature, lignocellulosic biomass has emerged as a novel source for the production of graphene. At sufficient heat, biopolymers (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) can be disintegrated into three-dimensional turbostratic crystallites, consisting of partially defective carbon sheets of aromatic rings (graphite-like material) via pyrolysis, where it may serve as a precursor in graphene synthesis. There are several techniques employed for graphene synthesis from lignocellulosic biomass; carbonization, graphitization, hydrothermal carbonization, chemical activation, chemical blowing technique, template-based confinement, mechanical and chemical exfoliation, and carbon growth via chemical vapor deposition. This review offers an insight into lignocellulosic biomass compositions and those aforementioned mechanisms to produce graphene-based materials, which cover various parameters and properties outcomes. A summary of their applications prospect, environmental impacts, economic concerns and production challenges is also presented.

There is a growing interest in the fabrication of membranes and packaging materials from natural resources for a sustainable society. A regenerated cellulose (RC) film composed solely of cellulose has outstanding advantages including biodegradability, transparency, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. To expand the application of the RC film, various surface modification methods have been proposed. However, conventional chemical methods have disadvantages such as environmental burden and difficulty in controlling the reaction. In this work, low-pressure plasma treatment, a green, solvent-free, and easily controllable approach, was performed for surface modification of the RC film. The effects of three different plasma species (O2, N2, and CF4) and treatment conditions on the surface properties of RC films were investigated based on water contact angle measurements, chemical composition analysis, and surface topography. O2and N2plasma treatment slightly enhanced the surface wettability of RC films due to the etching by the plasma reactive species and the formation of new hydrophilic functional groups. In CF4plasma treatments, the hydrophobic surface with a contact angle of 120.6° was obtained in a short treatment time (60 s) owing to the deposition of fluorocarbon groups on the surface. However, the treated surface in a longer reaction time resulted in increased wettability due to the diffusion and degradation of fluorine-containing bonds. The new insights could be valuable for further studies of surface modification and functionalization of RC films.

CO2levels in the atmosphere are growing as a result of the burning of fossil fuels to meet energy demands. The introduction of chemical looping combustion (CLC) as an alternative to traditional combustion by transporting oxygen emphasizes the need to develop greener and more economical energy systems. Metal oxide, also defined as an oxygen carrier (OC), transports oxygen from the air to the fuel. Several attempts are being made to develop an OC with a reasonable material cost for superior fuel conversion and high oxygen transport capacity (OTC). This study aims to synthesize a potential OC using the wet impregnation method for the CLC process. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the cyclic redox properties using 5% CH4/N2and air as reducing and oxidizing gases, respectively. The 10CuPA-based OC retained a high OTC of about 0.0267 mg O2/mg of OC for 10 cycles that was higher than 10CuA-based OC. Furthermore, the oxygen transfer rate for 10CuPA-based OC was relatively higher compared to 10CuA-based OC over 10 cycles. In comparison to 10CuA-based OC, the 10CuPA-based OC presented a steady X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern after 10 redox cycles, implying that the phase was stably restored due to praseodymium-modified γalumina support.

Dried hybrid fillers comprised of silica/CNF were successfully synthesized in ethanol/water mixed solvents at room temperature without the usage of any precursor. The as-prepared fillers were incorporated with polypropylene (PP) as a polymer matrix through a twin-screw extruder. From surface morphology analysis, the agglomeration of the silica/CNF hybrid fillers was prevented in the PP matrix and they exhibited moderate transparency, around 17.9% and 44.6% T at 660 nm. Further, the chemical structures of the polymer composites were identified by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis. According to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the insertion of silica as a co-filler to the PP matrix resulted in an increase in its degradation onset temperature and also thermal stability. In addition, the mechanical properties of the PP composites also increased after the blending process with the hybrid fillers. Overall, sample PP-SS/CNF exhibited the highest tensile strength, which was 36.8 MPa, or around 73.55% compared to the pristine PP. The improvements in tensile strength were attributed to good dispersion and enhanced efficiency of the stress transfer mechanism between the silica and the cellulose within the PP matrix. However, elongation of the sample was reduced sharply due to the stiffening effect of the filler.

The new Cd(II) and Cu(II) complexes namely [Cd2(2-OHbza)4(apm)4] (1), [Cu2(2-OHbza)4(apm)]n•2(2-OHbza) (2) and [Cu2(2-CH3bza)4(apm)]n (3) (2-OHbza = 2-hydroxybenzoate, 2-CH3bza = 2-methylbenzoate and apm = 2-aminopyrimidine) were successfully prepared by using direct one pot synthesis method. All complexes were characterized by using CHN elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Compound 1 crystallized in monoclinic space group P21/c, while compound 2 and 3 crystallized in triclinic space group P-1. The dinuclear compound 1 consists of two seven-coordinated Cd(II) centers which are doubly bridged by 2-OHbza bridging ligands, while the rest two 2-OHbza and two apm are terminal ligand. The crystal structure of compound 1 is stabilized by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and C-H•••pinteraction and p•••pinteractions. Compounds 2 and 3 present zigzag one-dimensional chainlike-structure which dimer Cu(II) units are linked by apm ligand. The crystal structure of these compounds is stabilized by p•••pand C-H•••pinteractions. The photoluminescence properties of compound 1 has been studied comparing to those of 2-OHbza and apm ligands. The solid state PL emission spectrum of compound 1 shows similar intensity of free apm ligand and shape to free 2-OHbza ligand which present a single broad band centered at ?em 525 nm (?ex = 325 nm), but blue-shift. For solution PL experiment of compound 1 in various solvents, the results showed that compound 1 is selective PL quenching acetone. Electronic spectra for solid state and solution in different solvents of compounds 2 and 3 present the d-d absorption bands centered in the range of 701 - 794 nm. The highest red shifts of ?max are found for compounds 2 and 3 in DMSO. In addition, the antibacterial activity of all compounds are investigated for S.aureus and E.coil by agar diffusion method. The results show that compound 1 exhibits the activity against S.aureus better than E.coil.

In this research the biodiesel from palm oil were synthesized by using magnetic solid base catalyst. The magnetic solid base catalyst was prepared by using co-precipitation method and followed by modified Stober's method and wet impregnation method. CaO-ferrite nanometre magnetic solid base catalysts (CaO@Fe3O4/SiO2) were synthesized by loading CaO on the surface of Fe3O4 core-shell using the polymeric binder, TEOS. Under the optimized condition reactions, the catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation and incipient wetness impregnation followed by calcination at 700 °C for 5 h. The calcined catalyst was fully characterized. The basic strength of the catalysts (H_) was first assessed using Hammett indicators, which are in range 9.8-15.0. The calcined Ca/ferrite-TEOS showed homogenous spherical shape with an apparent thickness of 92 nm. The FT-IR of CaO observed at 520 cm-1 is attributed to the Ca-O vibrations. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Fe, Si and Ca on the catalyst. The optimization conditions for biodiesel production have been measured. The catalyst was used 5.0 % wt. The methanol to oil ratio is 5:1, reaction time is 180 minutes and reaction was produced at 80°C. The catalyst achieved a biodiesel conversion of used palm oil (acid value 1.2) above 92 %. The catalytic activity and recovery rate of CaO@Fe3O4/SiO2 are better as compared to CaO catalyst. The properties of synthesized biodiesel have been studied and meet standard the Department of Energy Business.

The importance of pollutant remediation using solar energy is increasingly acknowledged as a viable method to solve the current environmental problems. To date, three-dimensional (3D) graphene architectures have demonstrated excellent photocatalytic performance due to their salient characteristics. The hydrothermal treatment is the commonly reported synthetic protocol in preparing various novel hybrid 3D graphene architectures. This chapter focuses on the recent progress in developing and applying hybrid 3D graphene for the photocatalytic remediation of organic pollutants such as dye molecules, emerging contaminants, and heavy metals. Various novel design based on semiconductor/3D graphene has led to the creation of highly efficient heterojunction photocatalyst. The transformation to a 3D architecture does not only improve the accessible surface area but also enhanced light harvesting capability and charge transport. In addition, we have also made an effort to discuss some photocatalytic antibacterial disinfection innovations. The design and development of visible light photocatalysts for wastewater remediation applications have received considerable attention due to their ability to operate under low energy, renewable and clean. The application of ZnO nanostructures as a photocatalyst in various photodegradation applications has shown to be of continued interest. However, ZnO possessed several setbacks, including their large bandgap, which require high energy for the excitation of the electrons. To overcome these limitations, doping ZnO photocatalysts has been confirmed to enhance their photocatalytic performance by narrowing their large bandgap, thus opening up numerous possibilities. Doped ZnO nanostructures have found extensive use in pollution control applications as visible light photocatalysts. The doping with metal or non-metal elements, metal oxides, and inclusion with other semiconductors to form a hybrid heterojunction photocatalyst are among the strategies employed. This mini review summarizes recent progress in the strategies employed in the preparation of doped ZnO photocatalysts for the degradation of various organic pollutants, including synthetic dye molecules and emerging contaminants. Their application in antibacterial performance is also briefly explained. Additionally, the degradation mechanism of selected pollutants is also discussed. Finally, the advantages of using doped ZnO photocatalyst for pollution remediation are discussed. Considering the issue of water security, this review is timely to address the impending problem that the world is facing. Hopefully, this article can assist readers in gaining a better understanding of doped ZnO photocatalysts.

The present study aimed to remove lead ions (Pb2+) in a single synthetic solution by employing a plant-based Tacca leontopetaloides biopolymer flocculant (TBPF). The ions were eliminated through the flocculation process via the Jar test experiment. The maximum Pb2+ removal was determined based on one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) and central composite design (CCD). Based on the OFAT, the maximum Pb2+ eliminated, 83%, was achieved at pH 6 synthetic solution, 2.5 mg/L initial Pb2+ concentration, and 3% initial TBPF concentration at 192 mg/L dosage. The highest Pb2+ removal of 73% was recorded at pH 6.4 synthetic solution with 11.8 mg/L initial Pb2+ concentration at a constant 3% initial TBPF concentration and 192 mg/L TBPF dosage when the CCD was employed. The excellent Pb2+ removal with the environmentally friendly plant-based TBPF utilised in the current study demonstrated outstanding potential in industrial heavy metal treatments, particularly at the primary stages.

The development of effective methods to utilize industrial and agricultural wastes is crucial from the perspective of a circular economy. Marble powder and olive pomace (OP), byproducts of olive oil production and marble processing, are considered one of the major sources causing severe environmental pollution, especially in Mediterranean countries. Herein, marble powder and OP are aimed to use as fillers in polypropylene (PP)-based polymer composite. In addition, fractionated OP is further fibrillated by a combination of mechanical grinding and ionic liquid treatment to enhance its performance as a reinforcement. After treatment for 24 h, the particle size decreases from about 2.1 to 1.1 µm, and the lignocellulosic composition also varies due to the partial removal of hemicellulose. Finally, the compounding ratio of polymer composites consisting of PP, marble powder, fibrillated OP, and compatibilizer is optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) to achieve both high mechanical properties and high filler contents. Mechanical properties of polymer composite fabricated with optimum ratio are in excellent agreement with those predicted by RSM. Furthermore, the yield strength and Young's modulus of polymer composite are 33.9 MPa and 1.89 GPa, accordingly, which are higher than those of PP.

To date, existing methods for graphene functionalization entail complex procedures, hence efficient and facile methods are desired. In this study, alkylamine functionalization on reduced graphene hydrogel (rGH) was achieved via a facile two-step method involving hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide (GO) to rGH followed by the immersion/agitation treatment of the rGH in octylamine (OA), decylamine (DA) and dodecylamine (DDA). It was found that the interactions of the alkylamine occurred via the epoxy ring-opening and amidation. To emphasize the advantage of this method, the adsorption kinetics on methylene blue (MB) and bisphenol-A (BPA) was further accessed. Shorter alkyl chain alkylamine (OA & DA) functionalized rGHs showed improvement in their adsorption capacity due to the increase in the specific surface area of the hydrogels. The highest specific surface area was obtained for rGH-DA at 47.80 m2/g followed by rGH-OA (47.37 m2/g), rGH-DDA (42.00 m2/g) and rGH (27.29 m2/g). However, longer chain alkyl chain alkylamine (DDA) functionalized rGHs showed lower adsorption capacity posited from the crowding of long alkyl chain which decreases the π–π interactions between the MB/BPA and the graphene sheets. rGH-DA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for MB and BPA at 482 and 228 mg/g, respectively. In addition, the alkylamine functionalized hydrogels showed high regeneration behaviour after three cycles of adsorption-desorption: above 85% and 75% for MB and BPA, respectively. This proposed facile functionalization route will open interesting possibilities in the design of novel reduced graphene-based based hydrogels with improved adsorption performance that can bring ample benefits in wastewater remediation.

Herein, we prepared and characterized two antimicrobial cyclic peptides immobilized on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and accessed their anti-bacterial towards Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacterias. The covalent interaction between the tyrosine and histidine based cyclic peptides and the rGO occurred via the carboxylic groups of the reduced graphene and the amino side chain groups of the cyclic peptides. A selective antibacterial effect is observed for the cyclic peptides functionalized rGO. The inhibition zone test showed that both the tyrosine and histidine cyclic based peptide immobilized on rGO exhibited higher anti-bacterial potency towards the bacteria in comparison to bare rGO which can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the antimicrobial peptide and rGO.

Cellulose films regenerated from aqueous alkali–urea solution possess different properties depending on coagulation conditions. However, the correlation between coagulant species and properties of regenerated cellulose (RC) films has not been clarified yet. In this study, RC films were prepared from cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) under several coagulation conditions. Cellulose dissolved in aqueous LiOH–urea solution was regenerated using various solvents at ambient temperature to investigate the effects of their dielectric constant on the properties of RC film. The crystal structure, mechanical properties, and surface morphology of prepared RC films were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile tester, and atomic probe microscopy (AFM), respectively. It is revealed that the preferential orientation of (110) and (020) crystal planes, which are formed by inter-and intramolecular hydrogen bonding in cellulose crystal regions, changed depending on coagulant species. Furthermore, we found out that tensile strength, elongation at break, and crystal structure properties of RC films strongly correlate to the dielectric constant of solvents used for the coagulation process. This work, therefore, would be able to provide an indicator to control the mechanical performance of RC film depending on its application and to develop detailed researches on controlling the crystal structure of cellulose.

Mechanochemical reaction, a green synthetic esterification route was utilized to prepare long-chain cellulose esters from microcrystalline cellulose. The influence of reaction conditions such as reaction temperature and time were elucidated. Only low dosage of oleic acid, 1-butyl-3-metylimidazolium acetate, and p-toluenesulfonyl chloride were required. The success of modification reaction was confirmed by Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy as a new absorbance peak at 1731 cm−1 was observed, which indicated the formation of carbonyl group (C=O). Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance was also performed to determine the structural property and degree of substitution (DS) of the cellulose oleate. Based on the results, increasing reaction temperature and reaction time promoted the esterification reaction and DS. DS values of cellulose oleates slightly decreased after 12 h reaction time. Besides, X-ray diffraction analysis showed the broadening of the diffraction peaks and thermal stability decreased after esterification. Hence, the findings suggested that grafting of oleic acid’s aliphatic chain onto the cellulose backbone lowered the crystallinity and thermal stability.

Organic phototransistors (OPTs) play a crucial role in various light sensing and imaging applications. In this work, we have fabricated highly sensitive Poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT)/[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blended thin film based OPTs using ribbon-floating film transfer method. A high charge carrier mobility (µ) of 0.002 cm2V-1s-1 and an Ion/Ioff of 6 × 104 was showcased by the blended polymer thin film based OPT as compared to its pristine polymer thin film based counterpart which had a µ of 0.001 cm2V-1s-1 and an Ion/Ioff of 9 × 103. Further, the blended polymer thin film based OPT demonstrated a high photosensitivity of 6.6 × 103 and a photoresponsivity of 0.13 A/W towards white light which were much superior than those of many of the previously reported polymer thin film based OPTs. The results hold crucial significance towards the development of cost effective blended polymer thin film based OPTs.

Rutin (RT) also known as vitamin P, is an electroactive flavanoid mainly found in plants. It is generally applied as a clinical drug, Chinese traditional medicine and consumed as a supplement and act as a healthy collagen. Consumption of RT as supplement associated with some side effects and certain people has allergy towards RT. Therefore, it is meaningful to develop a fast, simple and reliable method to detect RT to avoid health risks. This paper describes the facile synthesis of Co-MOF using 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) and biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC) as ligands through solvothermal method. The XRD patterns and FT-IR spectra confirm the formation of Co-BDC and Co-BPDC MOFs. Moreover, the SEM images revealed that the Co-BDC MOF possesses a stacked layer of MOF while Co-BPDC MOF shows a flower-like MOF. The Co-BDC and Co-BPDC MOFs were fabricated on GC electrode for the sensitive determination of RT. The ligands with different chain lengths in the MOFs have influenced the interaction of RT with the MOF. The Co-BPDC-MOF/GCE exhibited an excellent electrocatalytic activity than the Co-BDC-MOF/GCE and the fabricated electrode was successfully utilized for the determination of RT in pharmaceutical samples. The fabricated sensor exhibited the limit of detection of 0.03 µM (S/N = 3) and the superior sensitivity of 781.43 µA/mM/cm2 in the linear range detection of 0.5 – 1000 µM RT with excellent repeatability, reproducibility, and good anti-interference ability.

To date, studies pertaining the usage of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (DCAs) in the preparation of graphene-based hydrogels are limited and mainly has been applied either as a reducing agent or cross-linkers. The modification of the hydrogels' properties can be achieved via the introduction of small amount of additive into the starting material, graphene oxide (GO). The facile synthetic protocol enables the impartation of desired properties to the graphene-based hydrogel as intended for their specific applications. In this study, the in-situ preparation of reduced graphene hydrogel (rGH) was carried out in the presence of a series of aliphatic DCAs namely oxalic acid (OA), malonic acid (MA), succinic acid (SA), glutaric acid (GA) and adipic acid (AA) in the GO reaction mixture via green hydrothermal method and freeze-drying. The as-prepared hydrogels were systematically characterized to probe the changes in their chemical and physical changes. Higher specific surface (SSA) of the hydrogel is obtained for shorter chain length DCAs. The FTIR and XPS results also indicated that shorter chain DCAs exhibited better reducing capability in the removal of oxygen functional groups. The C/O ratio obtained showed decrement with the increase in the chain length of the DCA. On the other hand, good dispersity was found for longer chain DCAs in polar solvent. Overall, this study should provide a comprehensive understanding on hydrothermally reduced graphene hydrogels prepared in the presence of dicarboxylic acids.

Probing the metal/conducting polymer interface and implications of the metal diffusion in two-terminal sandwich devices 査読有り

In this article, we have investigated the role of polymer regio-regularity and film fabrication technique in reducing metal diffusion from top electrodes in sandwich type devices. Poly(3-hexyl thiophene)(P3HT) polymer of varying regio-regularity was chosen for investigation and its corresponding thin films were fabricated by spin-coating(SC) and floating film transfer method(FTM). Sandwich devices with a top interface between gold and i) FTM coated regio-regular (rr) P3HT, ii) FTM coated non-regiocontrolled (nr) P3HT, iii) SC nr-P3HT and iv) SC rr-P3HT were fabricated. The current density vs voltage (J-V) characteristics of the devices revealed non-ohmic characteristics. Estimation of interfacial hole barrier heights using Fowler Nordheim tunneling model revealed a small barrier of 1.12 eV for the isotropic spin-coated nr-P3HT film which increased to 1.37 eV with an increase in film anisotropy for the FTM nr-P3HT film. The barrier height also gradually declined from 1.37 eV to 1.05 eV with increase in regioregularity from FTM nr-P3HT to FTM rr-P3HT. These observations were confirmed through optical and structural characterizations along with depth profiling of metal diffusion using XPS. Pronounced Au diffusion to a higher depth was observed in the XPS results for the highly anisotropic FTM film that decreased subsequently with decrease in anisotropy from FTM to spin-coated film. It was thus deduced that a judicious selection of fabrication technique and polymer aids in reducing metal diffusion leading to improved device performance. The results hold crucial significance towards the fabrication of efficient organic photodetectors that have a sandwich type device architecture.

Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) can be used for reinforcer to silicone polymer to expect enhancement of its mechanical strength. However, NFC is a hydrophilic material, which typically poor-dispersed characteristic in non-polar polymer matrices. To overcome this bothersome characteristic, surface modification of NFC has been studied to tailor the interfacial interactions between NFC and matrices for fiber dispersibility in matrices. In this work, NFC was treated with some acids to modify a functional group in NFC. The acid treatment approaches successfully introduced the functional groups onto NFC surface, which confirmed by FT-IR, TGA, and SEM-EDS analyses. Moreover, the XRD analysis revealed that this treated NFC was the cellulose type I and acid treatments did not vary it. The TGA results showed lower thermal degradation of all treated NFC as compared to control NFC. Additionally, the effects of treated NFC as nanofiller in the silicone elastomer were evaluated the mechanical properties. The treated NFC also showed a good dispersibility in silicone composite, and no agglomeration was observed. Moreover, the tensile strength and elongation of silicone composite with treated NFC as nanofiller showed high performance compare to silicone composite with pristine NFC. The highest tensile value was recorded at 3.4 MPa in silicone/NFC-P samples using phosphoric acid-treated NFC. Therefore, a low concentration of acid treatments has the potential to be an effective method as a surface modification of NFC.

PCPDTBT copolymer based high performance organic phototransistors utilizing improved chain alignment 査読有り国際誌

In this article, we report single component thin film based organic phototransistors (OPTs) developed using the novel ribbon-floating film transfer method (ribbon-FTM). A low band-gap copolymer, poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) has been employed to develop the photoactive thin films of the devices. The fabricated polymer films were highly anisotropic in nature. To investigate the effect of film anisotropy on the device performance, organic field effect transistors (OFETs) were fabricated in two configurations namely, parallel and perpendicular, wherein the polymeric chains were oriented in line and orthogonal to the transistor channel direction, respectively. Notable differences in charge carrier mobility and device on-off ratios were observed among the two sets of devices. An on-off ratio of 4.1 × 103 and an average mobility of 0.001 cm2/V were observed in case of the perpendicular oriented OFETs which were increased to 105 and 0.003 cm2/V for the parallel oriented OFETs. A probe into the contact resistance at the respective metal/polymer interfaces of the devices was carried out using the modified transmission line method (MTLM). 4 times lower contact resistance was observed in the parallel OFET which was anticipated to be responsible for its superior performance. Further, the fabricated devices were illuminated with monochromatic red light (Pin = 0.4 mW/cm2) to observe their performance as phototransistors. Appreciable values of photosensitivity (2 × 104) and photoresponsivity (17.6 A/W) were obtained for the parallel OPTs which were found to be much higher than those of the previously reported thin film based OPTs employing other materials fabricated through conventional film coating techniques. The results presented in this report are of key significance towards the development of highly sensitive and cost-effective phototransistors which can be used in opto-sensing and imaging applications.

The widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA), a plastic additive, is becoming a troubling trend due to its harmful effects on the environment. To date, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have piqued interest among researchers in the detection and remediation of BPA attributed to their salient properties of having large surface area, high conductivity, high functionalities, etc. Recent progress in GBMs has provided researchers with a wide array of synthesis techniques for various applications. Unfortunately, literature pertaining GBMs lagged in providing up-to-date research in BPA detection and remediation. Often, published review articles focused on the wide array of pollutants detection and remediation without a specific focus on a single pollutant. Hence, this review intends to reduce the knowledge gap by focusing on the recent studies pertaining usage of GBMs applications as electrochemical-based sensors and remediators via adsorption and photocatalysis of BPA. In sensing applications, GBMs sensors have evolved to be among the preferred choice for the detection of BPA. Provided that ample comprehensive reviews on the usage of GBMs as adsorbents and photocatalyst for various pollutants have been previously published, we focused our discussion solely on BPA as the model pollutant by providing up-to-date information on their synthesis route and performance ability. Certainly, this review will be useful to new entrants and experienced researchers intending to employ GBMs as the material of interest for the detection and remediation of BPA.

Surface functionalization of biochar from oil palm empty fruit bunch through hydrothermal process 査読有り国際誌

The use of biochar as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment purposes has been hindered due to its lower surface area compared to activated carbon. Current research on increasing surface functional groups on biochar surfaces to improve its adsorption performance suggests using high chemical concentration and long period of modification. This study solves these problems by focusing on improving surface functionalities of biochar via the hydrothermal functionalization process. Oil palm empty fruit bunch biochar was functionalized using autoclave with nitric acid as the functionalization agent. Functionalized biochar properties such as Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and surface functional groups were analyzed and compared with untreated biochar. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis shows a significant increase in absorption by oxygen functional groups and is corroborated with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The process does not result in any major change in surface morphology and reduction in surface area value. Methylene blue (MB) adsorption test shows 7 times increase in adsorption performance. These results show that the simple hydrothermal functionalization process successfully functionalizes the biochar surface and improves its performance without affecting its surface area at lower concentration, and shorter time compared to previous studies. This result, with future large-scale experimentation using real-life equipment in palm oil mills, would provide a better technology that can be implemented in the industry.

High removal of heavy metals using plant-based bioflocculant under low concentration is required due to its low cost, abundant source, and nontoxicity for improved wastewater management and utilization in the water industry. This paper presents a treatment of synthetic wastewater using plant-based Tacca leontopetaloides biopolymer flocculant (TBPF) without modification on its structural polymer chains. It produced a high removal of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd) at a low concentration of TBPF dosage. In our previous report, TBPF was characterized and successfully reduced the turbidity, total suspended solids, and color for leachate treatment; however, its effectiveness for heavy metal removal has not been reported. The removal of these heavy metals was performed using a standard jar test procedure at different pH values of synthetic wastewater and TBPF dosages. The effects of hydroxide ion, pH, initial TBPF concentration, initial metal ion concentration, and TBPF dosage were examined using one factorial at the time (OFAT). The results show that the highest removal for Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd metal ions were 98.4–98.5%, 79–80%, 97–98%, and 92–93%, respectively, using 120 mg/L dosage from the initial concentration of 10% TBPF at pH 10. The final concentrations for Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd metal ions were 0.043–0.044, 0.41–0.43, 0.037–0.054, and 0.11–0.13 mg/L, respectively, which are below the Standard B discharge limit set by the Department of Environment (DOE), Malaysia. The results show that TBPF has a high potential for the removal of heavy metals, particularly Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd, in real wastewater treatment.

The major hurdle in melt-processing of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) nanocomposite lies on the high melt viscosity of the UHMWPE, which may contribute to poor dispersion and distribution of the nanofiller. In this study, UHMWPE/cellulose nanofiber (UHMWPE/CNF) bionanocomposites were prepared by two different blending methods: (i) melt blending at 150◦C in a triple screw kneading extruder, and (ii) non-melt blending by ethanol mixing at room temperature. Results showed that melt-processing of UHMWPE without CNF (MB-UHMWPE/0) exhibited an increment in yield strength and Young’s modulus by 15% and 25%, respectively, compared to the Neat-UHMWPE. Tensile strength was however reduced by almost half. Ethanol mixed sample without CNF (EM-UHMWPE/0) on the other hand showed slight decrement in all mechanical properties tested. At 0.5% CNF inclusion, the mechanical properties of melt-blended bionanocomposites (MB-UHMWPE/0.5) were improved as compared to Neat-UHMWPE. It was also found that the yield strength, elongation at break, Young’s modulus, toughness and crystallinity of MB-UHMWPE/0.5 were higher by 28%, 61%, 47%, 45% and 11%, respectively, as compared to the ethanol mixing sample (EM-UHMWPE/0.5). Despite the reduction in tensile strength of MB-UHMWPE/0.5, the value i.e., 28.4 ± 1.0 MPa surpassed the minimum requirement of standard specification for fabricated UHMWPE in surgical implant application. Overall, melt-blending processing is more suitable for the preparation of UHMWPE/CNF bionanocomposites as exhibited by their characteristics presented herein. A better mechanical interlocking between UHMWPE and CNF at high temperature mixing with kneading was evident through FE-SEM observation, explains the higher mechanical properties of MB-UHMWPE/0.5 as compared to EM-UHMWPE/0.5.

Fundamental studies involving divalent ion intercalated graphene-based hydrogel are still lacking in terms of their adsorption behavior towards dye pollutants. In this study, we prepared a self-assembled Mg2+ and Ca2+ intercalated reduced graphene hydrogel (rGH) using hydrothermal treatment to evaluate the intercalation impact on the adsorption capability towards cationic dyes, methylene blue and rhodamine B. The morphological, structural, thermal, and textural properties of the divalent ion intercalated reduced graphene hydrogels were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett– Teller surface area analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The increased adsorption capacity of the divalent ion intercalated reduced graphene-based hydrogels towards the dye molecules resulted from the increase in the specific surface area and pore volume due to the Mg2+ and Ca2+ bridging that formed spaces between the graphene sheets framework. Adsorption kinetics and the equilibrium adsorption isotherm were fitted by a pseudo-second-order alongside intraparticle diffusion kinetic models and Langmuir isotherm respectively. In addition, the divalent ion intercalated reduced graphene hydrogel showed good generation after three cycles of simultaneous adsorption.

Polyurethanes (PUs) are a class of versatile engineering materials synthesized by the reaction between polyol, isocyanate, and chain extender as the hardener. Among various cellulose derivatives, cellulose acetate (CA) possessed unique features such as excellent mechanical properties, good thermal stability, tailorable surface chemistry, and can be used as hydroxyl providers to enhance the properties of PUs. Our goal is to develop a simple method to prepare PUs by using varying weight ratio of CA as the chain extender or crosslinking agent. PUs modified with varying weight percentage of CA (5 %, 10 %, and 30 %) (based on total parts per weight of poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) and isocyanate) were compared with PUs modified with 1,4-butanediol (BD), acting as the control. The morphological, chemical structural, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the modified PU CA polymer were investigated thoroughly. The findings from this study found that modified PUs with CA possessed higher thermal stability. The PUs with 10 % of CA as chain extender was found to be the optimal percentage for the preparation of PUs with the highest tensile strength and elongation properties. However, the utilisation of higher weight percentage of CA reduced the elongation property of the modified PUs due to excessive crosslinking effect.

Alignment of polymer chains holds the key to the development of highly functional polymer-based field-effect transistors (FETs). The recently developed ribbon-floating film transfer method (ribbon-FTM) has the potential for development of polymer thin films with highly aligned chains, which are desirable for fabrication of efficient planar devices. These thin films consisting of well-aligned polymer chains exhibit high degree of optical and electronic anisotropies. Herein, ribbon-FTM-processed thin-film-based organic photosensitive transistors of poly(2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-alt-5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienylbenzo [c][1,2,5]thiadiazole)) (PFO-DBT) are reported. Under optimized fabrication conditions, polymer FETs based on PFO-DBT demonstrate a charge carrier mobility of 0.002 cm2 V−1 s−1 and an on–off ratio of 5 × 104 under dark conditions. The devices further demonstrate a photosensitivity of ≈104 and 103 and a high responsivity of 8.37 and 4.6 A W−1 against green and red light illuminations, respectively. The results hold promise for the development of conducting-polymer-based high-performance photosensitive organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).

Background: Conventional drying using heated air oven is commonly used as a method for preserving the product but often affects the nutritional value, taste, and texture. However, the heat from the drying method can oxidize and destroy heat-sensitive compounds. Superheated steam (SHS) drying uses superheated steam instead of hot air or combustion gases in a direct dryer and was reported better at preserving the nutritional values of food products. Aim: To evaluate the effect of SHS drying on antioxidant properties of tea leaves. The study also compared SHS drying with conventional and freeze-drying methods. Results: Tea leaves dried using freeze drying retained the highest level of antioxidant properties compared to other drying methods. The leaves dried using SHS exhibited significantly higher radical scavenging activity, ORAC and FRAP values compared to oven drying method. At different drying temperatures (150 °C and 175 °C), oven dried leaves showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) antioxidant properties than that of SHS dried ones. Tea leaves dried for 60, 75, and 90 min using SHS showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) FRAP and ORAC values, and also total phenolic content compared to oven dried tea leaves. Conclusion: Tea leaves dried using SHS drying method retained higher level of antioxidant properties compared to oven drying. The drying method also retained lower antioxidant properties as drying time increased. Further study involving SHS drying in food-related fields should be conducted to support its usefulness. Incorporation of nanocellulose could improve wear resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for an artificial joint application. Yet, the extremely high melt viscosity of the polymer may constrict the mixing, leading to fillers agglomeration and poor mechanical properties. This study optimized the processing condition ofUHMWPE/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) bionanocomposite fabrication in triple screw kneading extruder by using response surface methodology (RSM). The effect of the process parameters-temperature (150-190°C), rotational speed (30-60 rpm), and mixing time (30-45 min)-on mechanical properties of the bionanocomposites was investigated. Homogenous filler distribution, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis, was obtained through the optimal processing condition of 150 °C, 60 rpm, and 45 min. TheUHMWPE/CNFbionanocomposites exhibited improved mechanical properties in terms of Young's and flexural modulus by 11% and 19%, respectively, as compared to neat UHMWPE. An insignificant effect was observed when maleic anhydride-grafted-polyethylene (MAPE) was added as compatibilizer. The obtained results proved that homogenous compounding of high melt viscosity UHMWPE with CNF was feasible by optimizing the melt blending processing condition in triple screw kneading extruder, which resulted in improved stiffness, a contributing factor for wear resistance.

Facile and versatile strategies for the preparation of reduced graphene oxide hydrogel (rGH) are of great interest due to its various applications in pollution adsorption, catalysis, gas sensors and tissue engineering. In this study, the preparation of a novel self-assembled reduced graphene oxide hydrogel modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and various porphyrin complexes using the green hydrothermal approach were reported. The AgNPs were successfully decorated on the reduced graphene sheets via electrostatic interactions. On the other hand, the interaction of porphyrin complex with the Ag/rGH is via esterification and π-π interactions. Based on thermogravimetric analysis and BET analysis, the intercalation of porphyrin complex improved the thermal stability and specific surface area (SSA) of the modified hydrogels. Further characterizations of the modified hydrogel were accomplished using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The adsorption capacity of the modified hydrogels increased with the integration of AgNPs and porphyrin complexes due to the increase of the number of adsorption sites. The Ag/TPP/rGH exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (130.37 mg/g) towards the cationic dye, methylene blue (MB) which is attributed to the additional binding sites from the available unoccupied aromatic structures of the TPP. All prepared hydrogels kinetic reaction conformed to the pseudo second-order model with good stability for removing MB with efficiency above 90%.

Modification of cellulose degree of polymerization by superheated steam treatment for versatile properties of cellulose nanofibril film 査読有り国際誌

Cellulose from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) was subjected to superheated steam (SHS) treatment at 150 °C for 1 and 2 h to produce cellulose with different degree of polymerization (DP). The treated OPEFB cellulose was subjected to a wet disc milling process to produce cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), followed by nanocellulose film production using casting-evaporation technique. Reduction of DP by 23 and 40% were recorded after SHS treatment of OPEFB cellulose for 1 h (SHS1) and 2 h (SHS2), respectively, as compared to the untreated OPEFB cellulose. CNFs produced from treated cellulose (CNF-SHS1 and CNF-SHS2) exhibited smaller diameter and were less entangled compared to CNF from untreated cellulose (CNF-UT). These contributed to smoother CNF-SHS films. The highest light transmittance was recorded for CNF-SHS2 film, followed by CNF-SHS1 and CNF-UT films. The increment in transmittance value is in accordance with the reduction in cellulose DP. Lower DP also caused CNF-SHS films to have less wetting property as a result of smoother film surface. Mechanical properties were affected by DP values suggesting the possibility to control mechanical properties of CNF films in relation to DP. Overall, SHS is an efficient treatment method to reduce cellulose DP with the advantage of controlling CNF film properties towards the production of a versatile CNF film.

Wastewater treatment is crucial to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water, especially for human use. Natural flocculants can overcome the disadvantages of chemical flocculants in wastewater treatment. This study proposes a new natural-based flocculant from the Tacca leontopetaloides plant for leachate treatment. The plant tuber was processed through gelatinization to produce Tacca leontopetaloides biopolymer flocculant (TBPF). The characterization of TBPF for flocculant properties was investigated, and the performance of TBPF on leachate treatment using a standard jar test procedure was examined at different pH values of leachate and TBPF dosages. The characteristics of TBPF in terms of amylose/amylopectin fraction, viscosity, and zeta potential were 26:74, 0.037-0.04 Pa·s, and-13.14 mV, respectively. The presence of-COOH and-OH structure in TBPF indicates the flocculant properties. TBPF reduced the turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), and color from 218 NTU, 214 mg/L, 14201 PtCo to 45.8-54.5 NTU, 19.3-19.9 mg/L, and 852-994 PtCo, respectively, using 240 mg/L of TBPF at pH 3. These results show a high potential of the new plantbased TBPF for leachate treatment and water industry applications.

Well-Dispersed Cellulose Nanofiber in Low Density Polyethylene Nanocomposite by Liquid-Assisted Extrusion 査読有り国際誌

Two different liquid assisted processing methods: internal melt-blending (IMB) and twin-screw extrusion (TWS) were performed to fabricate polyethylene (PE)/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) nanocomposites. The nanocomposites consisted maleic anhydride-grafted PE (PEgMA) as a compatibilizer, with PE/PEgMA/CNF ratio of 97/3/0.5-5 (wt./wt./wt.), respectively. Morphological analysis exhibited that CNF was well-dispersed in nanocomposites prepared by liquid-assisted TWS. Meanwhile, a randomly oriented and agglomerated CNF was observed in the nanocomposites prepared by liquid-assisted IMB. The nanocomposites obtained from liquid-assisted TWS exhibited the best mechanical properties at 3 wt.% CNF addition with an increment in flexural strength by almost 139%, higher than that of liquid-assisted IMB. Results from this study indicated that liquid feeding of CNF assisted the homogenous dispersion of CNF in PE matrix, and the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were affected by compounding method due to the CNF dispersion and alignment.

This research studied the effects of silane treatment at different soaking time: 1, 3, 5 h,on the properties of new variant Yankee's Pineapple AC6 leaf fiber (PALF). The propertiesof untreated and treated PALF was evaluated through several testing. The Si element wasfound on all treated fiber's surface through Energy-Dispersive X-ray, while significant peakswere clearly seen for these treated fibers at 1317.81 and 1100 cm-1 by Fourier TransformInfrared Spectroscopy. X-Ray Diffractor analyses showed small changes on the crystallinityof all treated fiber disregards the treatment and soaking time as compared to untreatedfiber. Improvement on the degradation temperature of all treated fibers to 360°C from 340°C was seen from the thermogravimetric analysis. Maximum surface roughness and tensilestrength were found for treated fibers at 3 h soaking time by atomic force microscope andsingle fiber testing respectively. The analyses suggested the potential Yankee's PALF to beused in composites for various industrial applications.

Biochar produced from biomass with high nutrient content is essential for improving the quality of agricultural soils. An abundance of biomass is converted into biochar with high nutrient content, but studies on the conversion of pineapple and sago waste into biochar are still limited. This research aimed to produce biochar from pineapple leaf (PLB), sago bark (SBB), and sago pith (SPB) through the carbonization process with low temperature. The samples were carbonized using a laboratory electric oven at a low temperature of 350°C. The raw biomass and biochar produced were then subjected to elemental analysis and characterization. The mineral contents of carbonized biochar such as K, N, S, Mg, and Ca increased from those of the feedstock concentrations. For PLP, K element increased 24-fold from 2.44 ± 0.73% to 48.32 ± 9.92%, while N element increased from 6.13 ± 2.39% to 8.33 ± 5.34%. However, for both SBB and SPB, N and K nutrients increased by 2-fold. The study reveals that pineapple leaf biochar has the potentials to be used as an alternative soil amendment to elevate soil nutrient and quality.

In this study, three types of oil palm biomass (OPB) namely, oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF), oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and oil palm frond (OPF), were studied and compared as the alternative fillers in the biocomposite reinforced polypropylene (PP). The fibers were treated using the optimal condition of superheated steam treatment obtained from previous study. The OPB/PP biocomposites at weight ratio of 30:70 were fabricated by melt blending technique and hot pressed moulding. Results showed that the tensile and flexural properties of optimized-SHS-treated OPB/PP biocomposites were improved by 9 – 30% and 9 – 12%, respectively compared to the untreated OPB/PP biocomposites. The same observation was recorded for thermal stability. Improved surface morphology as shown by the tensile fracture surface indicates better interfacial adhesion between SHS-treated OPB fibers with PP matrix during blending. Overall results showed that OPF/ PP biocomposites had better properties compared to biocomposites prepared from OPMF and OPEFB, suggesting that OPF is a better OPB fiber choice as a filler in PP reinforced biocomposite.

From the continuation of our previous work, which discussed the easy production of nanofiber (average size: 127 nm) from oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF), in this work, the surface of nanofibers (M-IL-OPMF) were modified through vapor-phase-assisted surface polymerization (VASP) to improve the affinity of interface between the polymer grafted M-IL-OPMF and non-polar matrix. VASP of ε-caprolactone was successfully proceeded from the [M-IL-OPMF] at 70 °C for 24 h and 72 h, and compositions were estimated to be 35.7% fiber/64.3% polymer and 27.8% fiber/72.2% polymer. To confirm the grafting of PCL, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), and dispersibility test in hydrophobic solvent were carried out. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Large area (>20 cm × 2 cm)-oriented thin films of PQT-C12 with varying molecular weight and polydispersity index (PDI) were fabricated by the ribbon-shaped floating film transfer method aiming toward their application as an active semiconductor element of organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Investigation on the influence of the molecular weight and PDI upon the extent of molecular alignment and anisotropic charge transport was systematically carried out. It has been demonstrated that high molecular weight in combination with low PDI not only leads to a very high optical anisotropy >10 but also high charge carrier anisotropy with a hole mobility of about 0.07 cm2/V·s for OFETs using parallel-oriented PQT-C12 thin films. Such a structure-property correlation is highly beneficial for the development of high performance organic electronic devices by synergistic and amicable tuning of the optoelectronic anisotropies and polymer synthetic variables.

Washing and drying are common steps for oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) preparation prior to pretreatment. However, the mass balance of OPEFB preparation proved a major loss of OPEFB during the washing and drying steps. An indigenous fungus, Schizophyllum commune ENN1 was used for delignification of unwashed OPEFB in biological pretreatment without nutrient addition. S. commune ENN1 achieved a maximum lignin removal of 53.8% after 14 days of biological pretreatment of unwashed OPEFB. S. commune ENN1 was able to grow on unwashed OPEFB during biological pretreatment at 55% of moisture content and 5% of oil residue. The highest amount of reducing sugars obtained from OPEFB pretreated by S. commune ENN1 was 230.4 ± 0.19 mg/g with 54% of hydrolysis yield at 96 h. In comparison, the sugar yield of OPEFB pretreated by Phanerochaete chrysosporium was 101.2 ± 0.04 mg/g. This study showed that S. commune ENN1 was feasible to remove lignin of OPEFB through biological pretreatment for enzymatic saccharification without washing and addition of nutrients.

Nanostructured lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12) nanopowder was successfully synthesized by simple peroxide route using titanium oxysulphate and lithium hydroxide. The structural properties of the as-prepared and sintered powders were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy. Surface morphological property was studied by scanning electron microscope. Compositional analysis was studied using X-ray photo electron spectroscopy. The thermal degradation behavior of the as-synthesized materials was analyzed by thermo gravimetric analysis (TG–DTA). The electrochemical properties of the Li4Ti5O12 nanopowders were examined using galvanostatic charge/discharge test. The effect of sintering temperature on its various physical properties and the electrochemical performances of Li4Ti5O12 was investigated. The storage capacity value obtained for Li4Ti5O12 and Li4Ti5O12/graphite composite anode was 83.52 and 91.33 mAhg−1 in 1 M LiPF6 at 0.1 mA.

Fiber reinforced polymeric composites have been known and widely used because of their high specific strength and modulus compared to metals. In the last few years, biomaterials listed as a demand technology to be exploring by researchers especially in industrial purpose. This is push by environmental awareness and the over use of petrol resources lead to the development of new materials, called biocomposites, which will maintain a better future. This paper will be discussing about a brief review of natural fibers, use in automotive industry to achieve a green technology target in manufacturing of cars specifically. It's a fact that, related to weight reduction, the automotive industry can take advantages of using these materials, not only because of extinction of oil reserve, but because of high ability and importance of these materials itself in automobiles. Currently, most composites in the market are focused with long-term durability design while using nondegradable polymeric resins such as epoxies and high-strength fiber such as glass. All these materials prove to be a good characteristic of composite but still lack in environmental concern. This polymer and fiber are derived from petroleum, a nonreplenishable commodity. The momentum is to use biocomposites in common plastics to improve performance. Since the main purpose of this paper is to show a bio-composite which is suitable to replace the existing interior of automotive design, the work has focused on obtaining that bio-composite, taking account into the raw-materials cost reduction and the maintenance of the manufacturing process based on current scenario. The automotive industry is in their way to expand green technology in composites because the need is greatest. But producing the composites is energy intensive and polluting, while the durability of conventional composites, often seen as an advantage, is also their biggest challenge. Current fibers use in industry right now is difficult to dispose. They do not degrade naturally and could linger for generations.

This work tackles the disadvantages in the production of functionalized nanofibers from biomass and offers a new methodology to nanofiber-reinforced composite manufacturing. A vapor-phase-assisted surface polymerization (VASP) method has been used to develop surface-modified lignocellulosic nanofibers. Through the vaporized monomers during polymerization, the polymer chains can be introduced deep within oil palm mesocarp fibers (OPMFs) due to their unique porous structure. After OPMFs are modified with polymer chains, the simple Mortar grinder mill-ionic liquid (M-IL) method provides fibrillation from the macro- to nanoscale, retaining the grafted polymer chains. This approach for the functionalization of biomass could lead to the large-scale fabrication of surface-modified nanofibers for reinforced materials and promote innovative implementations of the renewable biomass resource.

In this study, novel eco-friendly blends based on environmental-friendly polymers and compatibilizers, such as poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL), cis-1,4-polyisoprene (PI), soybean lecithin (SOLE) and acrylated-epoxidized soybean oil (AESO), have been prepared in order to suggest a biodegradable joining tool used for plant grafting in agriculture, which will be competitive from the environment and economic points of view against conventional nonbiodegradable tools. PCL/PI blends, in which the portion of PCL was 75 and 50, were mixed with a compatibilizer by a melt-blending technique. The resulting blends were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy and also their mechanical properties were determined. Afterwards, the blend films were buried in the soil. Remarkable level of weight loss was achieved in 6 weeks, ∼46%. The results showed that the addition of SOLE helped to improve the compatibility between PCL and PI due to its amphipathic property, and, besides, accelerated the weight loss of the films in soil, increasing microorganism growth on the film.

Graphene oxide has been used widely as a starting precursor for applications that cater to the needs of tunable graphene. However, the hydrophilic characteristic limits their application, especially in a hydrophobic condition. Herein, a novel non-covalent surface modification approach towards graphene oxide was conducted via a UV-induced photo-polymerization technique that involves two major routes; a UV-sensitive initiator embedded via pi-pi interactions on the graphene planar rings, and the polymerization of hydrophobic polymeric chains along the surface. The functionalized graphene oxide successfully achieved the desired hydrophobicity as it displayed the characteristic of being readily dissolved in organic solvent. Upon its addition into a polymeric solution and subjected to an electrospinning process, non-woven random nanofibers embedded with graphene oxide sheets were obtained. The prepared polymeric nanofibers were subjected to two-step thermal treatments that eventually converted the polymeric chains into a carbon-rich conductive structure. A unique morphology was observed upon the addition of the functionalized graphene oxide, whereby the sheets were embedded and intercalated within the carbon nanofibers and formed a continuous structure. This reinforcement effectively enhanced the electrochemical performance of the carbon nanofibers by recording a specific capacitance of up to 140.10 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g, which was approximately three folds more than that of pristine nanofibers. It also retained the capacitance up to 96.2% after 1000 vigorous charge/discharge cycles. This functionalization technique opens up a new pathway in tuning the solubility nature of graphene oxide towards the synthesis of a graphene oxide-reinforced polymeric structure.

The combination of graphene nanoplatelets and carbon nanofibers were successfully fabricated by utilizing a one-step solution based on the electrospinning technique. A distinctive morphology was observed in which the platelets were suspended between the fibrous structure that significantly improved the specific capacitance of the nanofiber to 86.11 F g−1, twice the increment from its original structure. Furthermore, all of the graphene nanoplatelets-reinforced samples recorded an optimal performance of over 90% capacitive retention after 1000 continuous charge/discharge cycles, regardless of the GnP concentration. These findings indirectly reflect the potential of CNF as the electrode material in the fabrication of high performance supercapacitor devices.

Co–WO3/functionalized carbon nanotube (f-CNT) nanocomposites have been prepared by solution growth technique. The physico-chemical characterization of the prepared nanocomposites was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The XRD analysis revealed the formation of orthorhombic phase of the prepared nanopowder. The SEM images showed the porous structured morphologies. The electrochemical behavior of the undoped and doped/f-CNT modified electrodes was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge techniques. The specific capacitance of 60.14 F/g was achieved for the Co–WO3/f-CNT nanocomposites.

Combination of mortar grinder mill (MG) and ionic liquid (IL) treatment was employed in order to fibrillate fibers from oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) in one-step. The structural changes of OPMF before and after the treatment were examined by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectra, Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared with the only use of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM[BF4]), combination of MG and IL helped to remove hemicellulose and lignin components partially from OPMF, and also fibrillated OPMF fibers at average particle diameter of 127 nm. Afterwards, the fibrillated fibers were utilized as reinforcement material for the purpose of enhancement of mechanical properties of poly(ɛ-caprolactone)(PCL). The addition of OPMF treated with the combined method led to a 64% increase in tensile strength in comparison with that of untreated OPMF. A novel perovskite structured barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanopowder was successfully synthesized at low temperature by a facile and an inexpensive microwave method. The synthesized nanosphere shaped BaTiO3 was analyzed using advanced characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared, Micro Raman, Scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive analysis and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopic techniques. Photocatalytic dye degradation study was carried out using newly synthesized BaTiO3 catalyst. The synthesized sphere shaped barium titanate nanopowders effectively degrade the various dyes such as Methylene Blue (MB), Malachite Green (MG) and Alizarin Red S (ARS) under UV light irradiation. The band gap energy of synthesized BaTiO3 was calculated by UV-DRS spectra using kubelka-Munk equation. The higher dye decomposition efficiency of nearly 100% was successfully achieved by BaTiO3 (BT10) nanosphere which was prepared using 10 min microwave irradiation.

A highly flexible electrochemical supercapacitor electrode was developed with a novel metal oxide-reinforced nanofiber electrode by utilizing a solution-based electrospinning technique. The facile fabrication steps involved the introduction of metal precursors into a polymeric solution, which was subjected to an in situ electrospinning process. The electrospun polymeric web with metallic ingredients was then subjected to an oxidative stabilization process that induced the formation of metal oxide nanoparticles within the polymer structure. Finally, the metal oxide nanoparticles incorporated with nanofibers were obtained using a carbonization process, thus converting the polymer backbones into a carbon-rich conductive nanofiber structure. The fabricated nanofibers were decorated and implanted with metal oxide nanoparticles that had a surface-decorated structure morphology due to the solubility of the precursors in the reaction solution. The electrochemical performance of the fabricated metal oxide reinforced with nanofiber electrodes was investigated as an electrochemical system, and the novel morphology significantly improved the specific capacitance compared to a pristine carbon nanofiber membrane. As a result of the uniform dispersion of metal oxide nanoparticles throughout the surface of the nanofibers, the overall capacitive behavior of the membrane was enhanced. Furthermore, a fabricated free-standing flexible device that utilized the optimized nanofiber electrode demonstrated high stability even after it was subjected to various bending operations and curvatures. These promising results showed the potential applications of these lightweight, conductive nanofiber electrodes in flexible and versatile electronic devices.

Treatment of wastewater using bioadsorbent has gained interest as one of the tertiary treatment methods. Bioadsorbents from peat, coconut shell, fruit stones and oil palm biomass have been produced but the bioadsorbent ability in removing pollutants from biologically treated palm oil mill effluent final discharge is scarcely reported. This research attempts to treat biologically treated palm oil mill effluent final discharge using steam activated oil palm mesocarp fiber bioadsorbent without the use of chemicals as activating agents. Oil palm mesocarp fiber was carbonised at 600 °C for 30 min and later activated using steam at same temperature for another 30 min. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the bioadsorbent was found to be 494 m2/g. Bioadsorbent produced was then used to treat biologically treated palm oil mill final discharge by mixing both bioadsorbent and the wastewater into a conical flask and shaken at 150 rpm for 24 h. At 10 g/L dosage, the bioadsorbent reduced the chemical oxygen demand and suspended solid of biologically treated palm oil mill effluent final discharge from 395 mg/L and 117 mg/L down to 303 mg/L and 14 mg/L, respectively. Consecutive treatments at 10 g/L dosage resulted in higher removal of the chemical oxygen demand and suspended solids up to 122 mg/L and 7 mg/L, respectively, which meets the river water quality, making the final wastewater suitable as recycled water for the zero-emission system in the palm oil mill.

The recent rapid growth in graphene-based supercapacitors has reached the point where there is a need for solid-state devices with physical flexibility, which will be a crucial advantage in modern electronic devices. Herein, we summarize recent developments toward an all solid-state graphene-based flexible supercapacitor. The routes to produce graphene-based electrode materials, along with the typical fabrication techniques for flexible devices, are thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, the structural morphology of the electrode materials is closely related to the electrochemical performance, and the influence of the electrode components on the mechanical flexibility of the fabricated devices is examined. Lastly, a summary of the overall electrochemical properties and current development of the reported devices is presented progressively to predict the future trends toward the realization of an ultimate-performance graphene-based flexible supercapacitor. An appropriate technology for waste utilisation, especially for a large amount of abundant pressed-shredded oil palm empty fruit bunch (OFEFB), is important for the oil palm industry. Self-sustained pyrolysis, whereby oil palm biomass was combusted by itself to provide the heat for pyrolysis without an electrical heater, is more preferable owing to its simplicity, ease of operation and low energy requirement. In this study, biochar production under self-sustained pyrolysis of oil palm biomass in the form of oil palm empty fruit bunch was tested in a 3-t large-scale pool-type reactor. During the pyrolysis process, the biomass was loaded layer by layer when the smoke appeared on the top, to minimise the entrance of oxygen. This method had significantly increased the yield of biochar. In our previous report, we have tested on a 30-kg pilot-scale capacity under self-sustained pyrolysis and found that the higher heating value (HHV) obtained was 22.6-24.7 MJ kg-'1 with a 23.5%-'25.0% yield. In this scaled-up study, a 3-t large-scale procedure produced HHV of 22.0-24.3 MJ kg-'1 with a 30%-'34% yield based on a wet-weight basis. The maximum self-sustained pyrolysis temperature for the large-scale procedure can reach between 600 °C and 700 °C. We concluded that large-scale biochar production under self-sustained pyrolysis was successfully conducted owing to the comparable biochar produced, compared with medium-scale and other studies with an electrical heating element, making it an appropriate technology for waste utilisation, particularly for the oil palm industry.

Nanosized Zn-WO3 and ZnWO4 materials have been prepared by microwave irradiation method. The physico-chemical characterization of the prepared nanomaterials was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution-scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) techniques. The size and shape of the ZnWO4 material can be controlled by changing the temperature. The XRD analysis revealed the formation of monoclinic phase of the calcined nanopowder. The HR-SEM images showed the sphere and plate shape particles. The electrochemical behavior of the ZnWO4 modified electrodes was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) techniques. The synthesized material shows the pseudocapacitance. The specific capacitance of 35.70 F/g was achieved for the Zn-WO3 nanopowder.

Formation of two- and three-dimensional micro architectures with chemical functions was verified by photo-vapor phase assisted surface polymerization (VASP) of functional monomer vapors combined with an auto-drawing system manipulated by prescribed programs. The surface modification by the photo-VASP of styrene vapor progressed rapidly, and a fine lines-pattern of photo-mask was transcribed as the corresponding polymer accumulations on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate surfaces. Substrate surface modified by photo-VASP of acrylic acid showed reversible changes in hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties according to repeating external chemical stimuli. The successive auto-drawing by photo-VASP of three kinds of monomer vapors was examined under spot illumination from a fine optical fiber on an X-Y stage manipulated by a prescribed program, resulting in the production of a pre-designed functional structure by successful accumulations of corresponding polymers on the substrate surface.

Cu-WO3 and CuWO4 nanopowders have been successfully synthesized by simple microwave irradiation method. The prepared nanopowders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The XRD pattern revealed the formation of orthorhombic and anorthic phase for the as-synthesized and heat-treated samples, respectively. The formation of nanoporous structure was confirmed by SEM for both as-prepared and heat-treated samples. The electrochemical performance of the Cu-WO3 and CuWO4 modified electrodes was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge techniques. The specific capacitance of 15.08 F/g was achieved for the Cu-WO3 nanopowder.

Ni-WO3 and NiWO4 nanopowders have been prepared by microwave irradiation method. The XRD pattern revealed the formation of orthorhombic and monoclinic phase for the as-synthesized and heat treated samples, respectively. The Ni-WO3 and NiWO4 samples show the nanoporous morphologies and it was confirmed by SEM. The VSM observation showed ferromagnetic properties of both as-prepared and heat-treated nanopowders. The electrochemical performance of the Ni-WO3 and Ni-WO4 coated electrodes has been investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) techniques. The maximum specific capacitance of 171.28 F/g was achieved for the Ni-WO3 nanopowder.

We here report the in-situ electrochemical deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite on the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The nanocomposite modified ITO was used as a basic platform for the construction of a novel electrochemical biosensor for the detection of hydrogen peroxide (H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2</inf>); where horseradish peroxidase (HRP) tagged antibodies acted as recognition elements for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The AgNPs-rGO/ITO modified electrode remarkably outperformed a bare electrode because of its enhanced surface area and electrocatalytic activity, resulting in a notably amplified electrical signal for the detection of H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2</inf>. Through a cyclic voltammetric (CV) technique, the detection limit of the sandwich type immunoassay configuration was found to be 214 μM, with a linear range of 25-500 μM, as compared to the non-sandwich system, which was 120 μM with the same linear range. In contrast, the current-time response of the resulting sandwich-type immunoassay configuration showed a wider linear response to H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2</inf> in the range of 25-1450 μM, with a detection limit of 5.3 μM, while the non-sandwich system exhibited a linear range of 25-1355 μM (R2 = 0.9992), with a detection limit of 10 μM. Therefore, the current-time response provided a more sensitive means of detecting H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2.</inf> The resulting immunosensor also exhibited outstanding stability and reproducibility, as well as selectivity toward H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2</inf> in the presence of several interferences.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of milling methods on tensile properties of polypropylene (PP) / oil palm mesocarp fibre (OPMF) biocomposites. Two types of mills were used; Wiley mill (WM) and disc mill (DM). Ground OPMF from each milling process was examined for its particle size distribution and aspect ratio by sieve and microscopic analyses, respectively. Results showed that DM-OPMF had smaller diameter fibre with uniform particle size compared to the WM-OPMF. Surface morphology study by SEM showed that DM-OPMF had rougher surface compared to WM-OPMF. Furthermore, it was found that PP/DM-OPMF biocomposite had higher tensile strength compared to PP/WM-OPMF, with almost two-fold. Thus, it is suggested that small diameter and uniform size fibre may improve stress transfer and surface contact between the fibre and polymer matrix and cause welldispersion of filler throughout the polymer resulted in better tensile strength of PP/DM-OPMF compared to PP/WM-OPMF biocomposite. Overall, it can be concluded that disc milling could serve as a simple and effective grinding method for improving the tensile properties of biocomposite.
