Liquid insulators have excellent cooling and insulation performance, but impurities and contaminants in the liquid or dissolved gases and moisture are known to have a significant influence on insulation performance. In this paper, using the Super High Frequency-wideband Partial Discharge (PD) current Pulse Waveform measurement system, “SHF_PDPW system”, that the authors have developed and applied to PD measurement in SF6 gas so far, PD current waveforms in mineral oil were investigated in detail. Differences in PD current waveforms due to degassing treatment condition of the mineral oil and polarity effect of applied voltage could be clearly clarified. These differences cannot be observed by ordinary oscilloscopes with analog bandwidths around 1GHz, and are important findings to understand PD phenomena, which were first observed by the super-wideband measurements.

Microwave ovens (MOs) are commonly used for cooking and heating food; it uses microwaves with frequency in the 2.4GHz band, which is one of the ISM band. However, discharge could occur inside the MO due to the formation of the high electric field by the microwaves when the tableware made of metal or decorated by metal paint, or when aluminum foil is placed inside a MO under operation. In addition, if there is food residue or food that generates flammable gas, the discharge may trigger severe ignition or combustion. Therefore, the discharge signal should be detected during the MO operation to avoid fires or accidents caused by the discharge. From this safety viewpoint, this paper described the detection properties of discharge-emitted electromagnetic (EM) waves leaked from inside the MO by using a Horn antenna placed outside the MO with a low pass filter (LPF) for eliminating the leaked microwaves. The light emission properties of the discharge, including ignition and combustion during the MO operation, were also investigated along with the discharge-emitted EM waves. As a result, it was confirmed that the discharge-emitted EM waves can be detected with the first light emission in all the tests by using the antenna with the LPF.

Leader Transition Properties of Propagating Partial Discharges in SF6 Gas and the Scaling Law under the Negative Lightning Impulse Voltage Application Reviewed

This paper described leader transition properties of propagating partial discharges (PDs) in SF6 gas under the negative standard lightning voltage application with taking into consideration of effects of Trichel pulses and displacement current flowing between the PDs intermittently generated and around the wave front of the impulse voltage. Also, the scaling laws related to critical charge amount Qcr for the leader transition, leader step length ΔL and leader step time τLD were applied to the obtained results to discuss the applicability and difference in the polarity effect. As a result, the valuable negative PD's data to allow to apply the scaling las were obtained from this study. It was revealed that the distinctive displacement current, i.e. gradient of the wave front of the impulse voltage with relatively higher amplitude, and Trichel pulses during the negative polarity discharges can affect the leader transition, and change of the capacitance by propagating PDs also affects the leader transition as well as the scaling law with a parameter of dV/dt because the displacement current flowing thorough the discharge channel is influenced by the capacitance.

This paper described optical phenomena of propagating partial discharges (PDs) including leader transition from streamer discharge in SF6 gas under positive and negative standard lightning impulse voltage. The optical measurement was performed using by special optical instruments like a framing camera composing of three ICCD cameras with optical filters to obtain spatial- or time-resolved spectroscopic images, a streak camera for a streak image or streak spectrum with a spectroscope, and a phot-multiplier tube (PMT) for light emission intensity, together with PD current and applied voltage waveform measurement by controlling the gate timing of the framing and streak cameras. As a result, typical optical properties to understand the leader transition based on stem or precursor mechanism were clarified, and optical features to identify the streamer and the leader discharge as well as the precursor that has not yet led to leader transition were found. These new findings could contribute to better understanding of PD mechanism as well as improvement of PD diagnostics of gas-insulated switchgear.

This paper described partial discharge (PD) current waveforms in SF6 gas measured with a super high frequency wideband measurement system (SHF_PDPW system) with changing the electrode system to control the electric field utilization factor in order to statistically clarify the steeped pulse properties of the negative PD current pulses with a few tens picosecond order at the rising part, i.e. the minimum measured rise time was 30ps and the averaged ones were 45ps to 513ps depending on the utilization factor. The formation mechanism of such picosecond steeped rising part was discussed based on ionization process and electron movement in the critical electric filed by taking the influence of electron mobility as well as the frequency properties of the measurement system into consideration.

This paper described difference in cutoff frequency of TEm1 modes between the conventional approximate solution followed by the radii of the inner and outer conductors and the analytic solution in the co-axial structure as a single-phase GIS. The analytic solutions were calculated by the Bessel function based on the boundary condition and confirmed the validity by the FD-TD method in the same size structure. As a result, the approximate solution for the TE11 mode is available while the higher modes above TE21 modes are not available when the difference in the inner and outer conductor radii was increased. Thus, a new approximate equation is introduced, which allows us to obtain more precise result rather than the conventional one.

Partial Discharge (PD) measurement is well known as powerful method to identify the condition of high-voltage insulation. This paper investigates the properties of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) electromagnetic (EM) wave emanating from the air discharge (corona) under high voltage DC source. By applying both positive and negative high voltage DC ranging up to 135 kV, a rod antenna and a horn antenna were used as UHF sensors to detect any EM wave emission from PD activity and breakdown in air insulation. The experiment results show that typical PD emission signals under positive DC have higher voltage amplitude and wider burst width pulses than the typical PD emission signals under negative DC. Moreover, it is found that the first-peak of EM wave emission under positive DC has negative polarity while under negative DC has positive polarity. In addition, FFT analysis shows that this typical air discharge has dominant amplitude in frequency bands below 250MHz. Another significant result of this experiment is the inability of the horn antenna to detect the EM emission from air discharge. © 2015 IEEE.

For PD detection of converter-fed motor windings, electromagnetic wave is one of the promising signals because of remote detection. This paper described fundamental relations of electromagnetic wave and other optical and electric signals from PD using crossed magnetic wires under repetitive impulses. Detection capability of plural PD pulses under one voltage im pulse is discussed in detail. © 2008 IEEE.

Applying ATP-EMTP for the purpose of thorough understanding of rotating machine transients, several kinds of model synchronous machines with typical features were analyzed in time domain as for sudden short circuiting, the calculated currents and flux linkages of which were plotted on the d-q domain planes. Many interesting current/flux vector traces, representing rotating machine transients during short circuiting, were obtained. These could, hopefully, be good help for understanding rotating machine transients.

A Persistent Current Switch (PCS) in a SMES system requires not only low ON resistance but also high OFF resistance in order to efficiently perform a load-leveling operation. Because a mechanical switch has the advantage of infinite OFF resistance, it can operate without generating Joule losses during the coil excitation and energy transfer process. However, it will cause an energy storage loss as long as the ON resistance, which mainly depends on contact resistance, is not decreased to zero. In this study, firstly case studies on energy losses due to the ON resistance of a mechanical switch and OFF resistance of a superconducting switch are carried out so as to show the necessity of a mechanical switch as a PCS in a large-scale SMES system. Secondly the contact resistance characteristics of a mechanical switch with NbTi bulk contact pieces are experimentally investigated as a function of switch driving force, switch pressing force, and ON-OFF operation number. Additionally, the effects of contact piece shape and its surface roughness on the contact resistance are examined. It was found that a superconducting connection at contact can be realized even if the switch is repeatedly opened and closed many times. The developed mechanical PCS, which has zero contact resistance, supports a superconducting current flow of more than 200 A. The formation mechanism of the superconducting connection at contact is modeled and analyzed based on theoretical considerations. © 1998 Cryogenic Association of Japan.
