    <p>Binary colloids of two morphologically different particle species cause phase separation containing liquid crystalline phases. Although electric alignment of colloidal nanosheets has been investigated for colloidal systems consisting of single nanosheet species, that of binary nanosheet colloids has scarcely been examined. We report herein the electric alignment of aqueous binary colloids composed of niobate (NB) nanosheets from K<sub>4</sub>Nb<sub>6</sub>O<sub>17</sub> and commercially available graphene oxide (GO) platelets. The NB–GO binary colloids show multiphase coexistence involving liquid crystalline phases induced by the NB nanosheets, whereas the employed GO particles do not contribute to the liquid crystallinity. The NB nanosheets in the binary colloids are electrically aligned in parallel to an AC voltage (1 kV cm<sup>−1</sup> peak to peak, 50 kHz) applied to the sample. When the concentration of GO in the binary colloids is low enough, the GO particles are also electrically aligned although they hardly respond to electric field in the absence of NB nanosheets. Combined optical microscopy of bright-field, polarized, and fluorescence observations demonstrates that isolated GO particles are dragged by the aligning motion of the NB nanosheets forming liquid crystalline domains. The results indicate that collective motions of colloidal nanosheets can induce participation of isolated particles.</p>

    <p>Among colloidal systems of inorganic nanosheets prepared by exfoliation of inorganic layered crystals, binary colloids of two different nanosheet species are important for their multicomponent and multiphase coexistence, which is applicable to new materials. Nevertheless, electric response of binary nanosheet colloids has scarcely been paid attention although that of single-component nanosheet colloids has recently been investigated. We report herein the electric alignment of aqueous binary nanosheet colloids of niobate K<sub>4</sub>Nb<sub>6</sub>O<sub>17</sub> and synthetic fluorohectorite, both of which have large lateral sizes of a few micrometers. In the binary colloids, the niobate nanosheets respond to an applied AC electric voltage to be aligned in parallel to the electric field. Although the clay nanosheets also respond to an AC electric field in their single-component colloids, their alignment is basically suppressed in the binary colloids. However, combined optical microscope observations of bright-field, polarized, and fluorescence detections indicate that large clay platelets are partly involved in the aligning motion of the niobate nanosheets. As a result, some of the clay platelets are aligned in parallel to the electric field. Colloidal liquid crystallinity of the niobate nanosheets contribute to the alignment of the clay particles by incorporating the latter particles to the liquid crystalline domains of the former ones.</p>

    <p>We report a versatile method for preparing a particulate composite based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) via a self-organized precipitation method.     <p>Inorganic nanosheets obtained by exfoliation of layered crystals such as smectite-type clays have been actively investigated as building blocks of nanomaterials in the past 25 years. However, their colloidal systems were at the outside of such a research trend. At the beginning of 21st century, liquid crystalline behavior of colloidal nanosheets was recalled into academic studies, and then the materials chemistry of 'nanosheet liquid crystals' has been gradually developed. Many popular nanosheets have been registered at the library of liquid crystals. Nanosheet liquid crystals are rare examples of inorganic soft materials, whose properties are greatly different from their mother crystals due to their softness. A typical property of nanosheet liquid crystals is structural coloration reflecting long periodic lengths between nanosheets. Also, technical inventory of manipulating liquid crystalline nanosheets has been enriched as exemplified by electric alignment and optical manipulation. Hierarchical structures of liquid crystalline nanosheets up to mm-level lengths have been organized with appropriate combination of manipulating techniques.</p>

    <p>Optical manipulation of nanosheet liquid crystals prepared by exfoliation of inorganic layered crystals realizes local and on-demand orientation control of nanosheets. Although a tightly focused laser beam by using an objective lens with a high numerical aperture (NA) is typically employed for the optical manipulation to enhance the gradient force of an irradiated laser beam, the dominant driving force of the optical orientational manipulation of nanosheets has recently been attributed to the scattering force, suggesting that an objective lens with a high NA is not indispensible for the nanosheet manipulation. In this study, we carried out optical orientational manipulation of nanosheets using an objective lens with low NA, 0.4, and compared the results with those obtained by a lens with high NA, 1.2. Orientational manipulation was realized with both of the lenses, and the size of the manipulated domain using a lens with NA=0.4 was smaller than that obtained by using a lens with NA=1.2. The domain size increased with the irradiated laser power, reflecting the dominant contribution of scattering force to the optical manipulation of nanosheet liquid crystals.</p>

    <p>On-demand and local manipulation of exfoliated clay nanosheets in colloidal dispersions enables a variety of novel applications of clay-based materials. In this study, manipulation of a single fluorohectorite nanosheet by utilizing the radiation pressure of a tightly focused laser beam was demonstrated. When a linearly polarized continuous laser beam was irradiated to a fluorohectorite nanosheet, the nanosheet was oriented with its in-plane direction parallel to the propagation direction of the laser beam. Furthermore, the nanosheet edge was directed in parallel to the polarization direction of the laser beam. When the polarization direction of the laser beam was rotated, the nanosheet was rotated following the rotation of the polarization direction.</p>

    <p>Colloidal nanosheets are obtained by exfoliation of inorganic layered crystals such as clay minerals in water. They form colloidal liquid crystals at high nanosheet concentrations due to their shape anisotropy. Liquid crystalline nanosheets can be aligned under external fields. For this purpose, electric field is advantageous owing to its facile instrumentation, controllability, quantitative reproducibility, and broad applicability. AC electric field is utilized for aligning liquid crystalline nanosheets because the samples are aqueous colloids of electrically charged particles. The 2D shape of nanosheets facilitates alignment of their longitudinal direction parallel to the electric field in many cases. When a colloid sample is incubated to grow liquid crystalline domains up to the size of sub-mm scale, hierarchical macroscopic structures are evolved under electric fields, where the grown domains play a role of secondary building blocks. The final structure varies depending on the relative direction of applied electric field and gravity. An electric field applied parallel to gravity gives a net-like assembly of the nanosheet domains, whereas orthogonal application of an electric voltage and gravity assembles nanosheets in stripes spanning over more than 1-mm length through unidirectional nanosheet alignment. Such flexible organization of nanosheet-based structures is a unique aspect of exfoliated nanosheets in colloidal liquid crystalline states.</p>
