O3-type layered oxides are considered promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, but they often face issues with structural instability and poor sodium-ion diffusion, leading to rapid capacity fading. In this work, we introduce a high-entropy approach combined with synergistic multi-metal effects to address these limitations by enhancing both the structural stability and reaction kinetics. A novel O3-type layered high-entropy cathode material, Na0.9Fe0.258Co0.129Ni0.258Mn0.258Ti0.097O2 (TMO5), which was synthesized via a straightforward solid-phase method for easy mass production. Experimental analysis combined with in/ex-situ characterization verifies that high-entropy metal ion mixing contributes to the improved reversibility of the redox reaction and O3-P3-O3 phase transition behaviors, as well as the enhanced Na+ diffusivity. Benefit from the advantage of structure and composition, the TMO5 exhibits a higher initial specific capacity of 159.6 mAh g−1 and an impressive capacity retention of 85.6 % after 100 cycles at 2 C with the specific capacity of 110.1 mAh g−1. This work showcases high-entropy O3-type layered oxides as a promising pathway for achieving robust, high-performance SIB cathodes.

The commercial self-assembled monolayer (SAMs) has been shown to significantly enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted (p-i-n) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) when employed as a double hole transport layer (HTL) on nickel oxide (NiOx). Despite these improvements, the inherent hydrophobicity of the SAMs results in suboptimal crystallization and the formation of micro-scale voids at the buried interface of the perovskite layer, which in turn leads to significant interface defects and serious nonradiative recombination. In this work, we introduce a molecular bridging layer composed of Diethyl (Phthalimidomethyl) phosphonate (DP), characterized by its carbonyl groups and phosphoryl bonds, to be deposited onto the surface of Me-4PACz. This bridging layer demonstrates a remarkable ability to coordinate with lead ions, providing a robust binding affinity that facilitate excellent adhesion to the substrate surface. The synergistic interaction of the two functional groups within the DP layer effectively mitigates bulk-phase defects and suppresses nonradiative recombination at the buried interface of the perovskite. As a result, PSCs incorporating the DP layer achieved a champion PCE of 23.26 % on an active area of 0.09 cm2. Additionally, The unencapsulated PSC maintains above 50 % of its initial PCE in the air with a relative humidity (RH) of 50–60 % for 1000 h. This work highlights the potential of integrating bridging layers in optimizing the performance and stability of PSCs.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to the abundance and cost-effectiveness of sodium (Na) resources. For the first time, we report a template-free synthesis of Bi-Sb-Fe-P negative electrodes designed to leverage their high theoretical sodium storage capacity. Notably, the incorporation of phosphorus (P) significantly enhances the performance of the Bi-Sb-Fe-P negative electrode, which is characterized by a unique coral reef-like nanoscale morphology. Phosphorus serves as a structure-directing agent during the electrodeposition process, regulating the surface morphology and facilitating the formation of this distinctive architecture. These features enable the Bi-Sb-Fe-P negative electrode to exhibit outstanding electrochemical performance, achieving a specific capacity of 727 mA h·g-1 after 100 cycles with a high retention rate of 90%, corresponding to a negligible capacity loss of only 0.16% per cycle. In contrast, the Bi-Sb-Fe negative electrode, with its irregular cluster-like structure, delivers a significantly lower specific capacity of 346 mA h·g-1 in identical cycling conditions. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements were performed to elucidate the reaction mechanisms and charge dynamics of both negative electrode materials. The findings highlight the significant potential of Bi-Sb-Fe-P as a next-generation negative electrode material tailored for high-performance SIB applications.

Zinc-based MOFs exhibit significant advantages in ion detection due to their unique structure and chemical properties. They can efficiently and selectively recognize and detect specific ions, making them powerful analytical tools for applications in environmental monitoring, biomedical fields, and more. In this work, we used a simple ligand to improve the coordination environment of Zn2+ ions and successfully synthesized a 3D coordination compound Zn(all-bdc)(Py) MOF through a straightforward hydrothermal method at low temperature. Additionally, we explored the potential of this MOF as a bifunctional ion fluorescence probe for both cationic and anionic recognition. The results showed that this 3D porous MOF exhibited excellent recognition ability for trivalent iron ions (Fe3+) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4−) ions due to its highly porous structures and efficient ion recognition. When iron ions were added to 500 μL and potassium permanganate ions were added to 100 μL, the fluorescence of the compound was effectively quenched, and the detection limits for these two ions were 0.95 μM and 0.13 μM, respectively. The mixed-ion experiments also demonstrated that even in the presence of similar ions, this 3D MOF still maintained good selective recognition ability, specifically identifying Fe3+ and KMnO4− ions. This work provides a novel synthetic strategy for the design of MOFs capable of mixed-ion recognition and detection, expanding their application potential in ion sensing and analysis.

Oxygen-related defects including O vacancies and dangling O-H bonds in the SnO<inf>2</inf> electron transport layer result in non-radiative carrier recombination, which directly affects the performance efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. Additionally, undercoordinated Pb²⁺ can also induce the non-radiative recombination of photogenerated carriers and provide a pathway for ion migration, leading to further degradation of solar cell performance. To tackle such issues, interface modification with multi-functional small molecules is usually considered to be a convenient way to inhibit non-radiative recombination and improve carrier transportation. Here, we employ two isothiourea bridge molecules, CESC (S-carboxyethyl isothiourea hydrochloride) and DASC (S-[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl] isothiourea dihydrochloride), to passivate the buried interface between SnO<inf>2</inf> and perovskite, realizing dual-functional passivation towards both filling O²⁻ vacancies in the SnO<inf>2</inf> lattice and binding the uncoordinated ions. Perovskite solar cells fabricated with this method show highly improved optoelectronic performance and resistance against ambient moisture. Compared with that of the control device (17.20%), the efficiency of the devices modified with DASC and CESC increased to 18.75% and 19.04%, respectively. The unpackaged solar cells treated with CESC and DASC maintained 91.2% and 89.5% of their initial efficiency, respectively, after aging for 1000 hours in a high-humidity environment.

To enhance the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia performance by accelerating the reaction kinetics of electrocatalytic Nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR), it is crucial to develop electrocatalysts with high acitiity and selectivity of NO3−RR. Herein, a Ru-doped Co-Ti3C2 catalyst was prepared for NO3−RR in this work. In 0.1 M KOH & 0.1 M KNO3 electrolyte, the Ru doped Co-Ti3C2 (nRu:nCo = 2:8, RuCo-Ti3C2-2:8) achieved a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 96.48% and an ammonia yield of 2261.99 µg cm−2 h−1 at −0.4 V vs. RHE. Compared with the Co-MXene catalyst and the Ru doped Co-Ti3C2 catalysts of other compositions, RuCo-Ti3C2-2:8 exhibited better ammonia yield and high FE. Moreover, the RuCo-Ti3C2-2:8 catalyst exhibited excellent stability of electrocatalytic NO3−RR.

Nanostructured Cu-doped MnCo<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>@3D nickel foam (CuMCO@NF) was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, which exhibited superior catalytic performance for photothermal preferential oxidation of CO than the powder CuMCO catalyst. With the support of the nickel foam, the morphology of the catalyst transforms from porous blocks of powder CuMCO catalyst to the sword-like arrayed nanostructure of CuMCO@NF, which greatly improved the light absorption of the catalyst. Under 2.5 suns, the CO conversion of 0.5CuMCO@NF with the Cu/Mn molar ratio of 0.5 reaches 90.5 % at the velocity of 60,000 mL·h^-1·g^-1. Compared to the powder samples, the nanostructured catalysts exhibited higher catalytic activity both at higher velocity and lower light intensity, which benefits from the lower mass transfer resistance and higher light absorption of the nanostructured catalysts. In addition, the stable existence of the adsorbed oxygen species in 0.5CuMCO@NF under the reaction atmosphere contributes to its superior cycling stability than powder 0.5CuMCO catalyst.

Aqueous dual-ion batteries represent an emerging class of energy storage technology, characterized by their strong designability and diverse combinations due to distinct charge storage. The type of ions in the electrolytes plays a crucial role in affecting the electrochemical performance of batteries. However, such a systematic investigation into the effects of electrolyte salts has yet to be reported. This work prepares nine electrolytes to study the differences in electrochemical performance of all-organic aqueous dual-ion batteries by meticulously selecting cations/anions with varying charges and sizes. The results indicate that the chaotropic and kosmotropic characteristics of the ions, determining the polymer-water-ion interaction modes, are the primary considerations required in electrolyte design. Following a thorough comparison, 1 M Zn(OTf)2 was identified as the optimal electrolyte for all-organic aqueous dual-ion batteries, demonstrating a capacity retention of 68.4 % after 5000 cycles. This work provides intuitive experimental data illustrating the roles of electrolytes in aqueous dual-ion batteries and highlights the importance of electrolyte design in related research fields.

Effective design of fillers can improve the performance of polymer electrolytes (PEs). Herein, this study introduces an innovative filler defect-structured cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-BTC) nanorods into Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). These unique PEs with uniformly distributed fillers of nanocrystalline/amorphous cerium oxide (CeO<inf>2</inf>) on Ce-BTC nanorods demonstrate a remarkable synergistic effect. This leads to more Li⁺ transport channels and better mechanical property, thereby elevating lithium-ion conductivity and promoting even lithium deposition and stripping. The experiment reveals that even with a mere 1 wt.% addition of CeO<inf>2</inf>@Ce-BTC, the ionic conductivity of PEs reaches to 2.5 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹ at room temperature, and a high lithium-ion transference number improvement to 0.78, also obtains extended electrochemical voltage windows above 4.5 V and good flame retardancy. Using the designed gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with ionic conductivity up to 7.6 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹, the full Li/GPE/LiFePO<inf>4</inf> battery demonstrates an average coulombic efficiency of up to 99 % and maintains stable cycling performance (103.8 mAh g⁻¹ even after 100 cycles) at room temperature, reinforcing its promising application in practical battery systems.

The Na superionic conductor (NASICON)-type Na<inf>4</inf>VMn(PO<inf>4</inf>)<inf>3</inf> (NVMP), with its three-dimensional framework and high operating voltage, has demonstrated great potential as a cathode material for Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, its performance is hindered by the Jahn-Teller effect from Mn³⁺ and slow Na⁺ diffusion kinetics, leading to capacity fade and structural instability. In this study, Li⁺ and K⁺ cations were separately doped into the NVMP structure to improve electrochemical performance. Li-doping enhanced the V³⁺/V⁴⁺ redox activity and significantly reduced the Jahn-Teller effect, contributing to a high-capacity retention of 97.7 % after 100 cycles at 1 C and 96.1 % after 1000 cycles at 10 C. This high-rate stability highlights the role of Li-doping in maintaining structural integrity and efficient ion transport under fast cycling conditions. Meanwhile, K-doping improved the structural stability by stabilizing V³⁺ oxidation states, leading to a capacity retention of 110.3 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 1 C and a discharge capacity of 99 mAh g⁻¹ at 10 C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further confirmed that both Li⁺ and K⁺ doping suppressed the Jahn-Teller effect by regulating the Mn³⁺ environment, which contributed to the improved cycling stability and Na⁺ cation diffusion kinetics. These findings highlight the effectiveness of alkali metal cations doping as a strategy to enhance the cycling performance of NVMP cathodes for high-performance SIBs.

Lithium (Li) metal batteries have the advantage of high energy density, but the Li dendrites risk piercing the separator and causing a short circuit in the battery. Replacing the liquid electrolytes with gel electrolytes is considered an effective strategy to solve the issues. Herein, a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based gel electrolyte, improved with multifunctional supramolecular polymer (MSP), was prepared to enhance the cycling stability and energy density of quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries. The MSP addictive constructs a cross-linked network structure with PVDF-HFP matrix and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) through hydrogen bonding, improving the mechanical strength of the composite gel electrolyte (PH-10%MSP-GE) to against the growth of Li dendrites. Moreover, the pre-lithiated sulfonic acid groups, conductive polyether groups of MSP, and the attraction of TFSI– anions, promote the Li-ion transportation of the composite gel electrolyte. Finally, the Li||Li symmetric cell cycle stably for over 450 h. The Li||LiFePO4 full cell demonstrates a high energy density and excellent cycling stability for over 600 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of up to 98.7%. This work provides valuable insights into the preparation of multifunctional composite gel polymer electrolytes and competitive quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries.

Health status prediction of lithium-ion batteries is critical for the stable operation of electrical equipment. The data-driven approach can fit the degradation laws based on the historical cyclic data and identify potential problems in time. However, existing prediction methods mainly focus on acquiring various cyclic degradation features, and excessive battery-related data types increase the complexity and indeterminacy, posing a challenge for efficient and accurate prediction during practical application scenarios. Herein, this study only uses cyclic voltages and proposes a novel multi-scale cyclic voltage data preprocessing technique, involving the selection of highly correlated feature parameters with battery life in both the time and frequency domains, and constructing graphical samples with dynamic node connectivity properties. The proposed multi-scale graph convolutional network model adeptly captures and amalgamates the evolving features among graphical samples with efficacy. The one-step prediction experiments demonstrate the capability to predict subsequent capacity degradation solely based on the voltages of any consecutive 20 cycles, with a root mean square error of 0.173 %, exhibiting adaptable capability across different battery datasets. Compared to existing methods that transform data into images for health status prediction, this study highlights the significance of a multi-scale approach to voltage analysis in cyclic data, leveraging advanced feature engineering and modeling techniques, not only to enhance the accuracy and adaptability of battery lifecycle predictions but also to offer a robust framework for overcoming prevailing challenges in monitoring accuracy and cost-effectiveness.

Organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still face significant challenges related to carrier recombination caused by numerous defects and an unfavorable energy level alignment. In this study, we introduce a multifunctional p-type organic molecule, dioctylbenzothieno[2,3-b]benzothiophene (C8BTBT), as an additive, aimed at enhancing the device performance. Our investigation reveals that the incorporation of C8BTBT effectively enhances perovskite crystalline quality, diminishes nonradiative recombination, improves perovskite electrical properties and optimizes energy level alignment. These improvements collectively contribute to the advancement of PSC devices. Impressively, a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 22% is achieved, accompanied by an open-circuit photovoltage of 1.12 V, a short-circuit photocurrent density of 24.58 mA cm−2, and a fill factor of 0.80. Furthermore, we evaluate the long-term stability of unencapsulated devices over 1000 hours under ambient conditions (with a temperature of 20 °C and humidity of 30%). The PSCs incorporating C8BTBT demonstrate a normalized PCE retention of 93% compared to their initial performance, while the control devices retain 82% of their initial efficiency.

Alloy anodes are widely recognized for their high theoretical specific capacity and have garnered significant attention among the anode materials studied for sodium-ion batteries. In this study, we synthesize Cu68.6Sb23.0Sn3.2Zn0.3P4.9 anodes using a double-pulse electrodeposition method. This binder-free alloy anode, comprising five high-capacity elements, significantly enhances specific capacity and improves cycling stability, while also demonstrating excellent sodium storage capability. Specifically, the Cu68.6Sb23.0Sn3.2Zn0.3P4.9 anode achieves an initial charge capacity of 368.8 mAh∙g−1 and remains highly stable over 100 cycles, with a capacity decay of only 0.1 %. In addition, the anode delivers 290.3 mAh∙g−1 even at a current density of 3200 mA∙g−1. The outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to improved electronic transfer efficiency due to the introduction of Cu into Cu68.6Sb23.0Sn3.2Zn0.3P4.9 alloy via reverse potential, as well as the porous structure that facilitates electrolyte penetration and sodium ion transport. The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique reveals a high sodium ion diffusion coefficient, further highlighting the potential of this alloy anode in advancing sodium-ion batteries.

Polymeric hydrogels have been identified as a highly hopeful material in solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) systems for freshwater production, but high materials cost and easy scale-up have hindered their industrialization process. In this research, a cost-effective, self-floating, sponge-like hydrogel foam evaporator was developed through a straightforward and scalable foaming-cross-linking-freezing strategy. This hydrogel foam evaporator exhibits ultralightweight characteristics and robust mechanical strength while maintaining its intrinsic hydrophilicity. By employing low-cost raw materials and fabrication techniques, the production cost of the device was reduced to $3.6 per square meter, achieving a high evaporation rate and energy efficiency of approximately 85%. Furthermore, the hydrogel foam evaporator demonstrated the capability of binding heavy metals and organic contaminants, enabling efficient removal of these pollutants from contaminated water. Owing to these advantages, this simply fabricated evaporator holds substantial potential for advancing low-cost solar-driven evaporation technologies, with promising applications in potable water generation, heavy metal ion adsorption, and wastewater purification.

Convenient and portable, sustained provision of safe drinking water is crucial for wilderness survival. In this study, a portable water collection bag utilising solar-driven interface evaporation technology has been developed. The water collection bag includes a plastic film, CB-PS microsphere evaporator, and a small vial. By placing on the water surface, the CB-PS microspheres float and absorb sunlight to quickly evaporate the surrounding water. The plastic film and vial make it easy and fast to collect clean and safe drinking water. The device boasts an impressive evaporation rate of 1.64 kg·m⁻²·h⁻¹ under 1 sun illumination. Moreover, the portable water collection bag can withstand harsh acidic and alkaline conditions, efficiently removing organic contaminants from wilderness water sources to meet drinking water standards. Importantly, it is designed for repeated use without any water evaporation rate decreasing. The portable water collection bag also exhibits strong resistance to salt, making it suitable for applications in desalinating seawater into freshwater.

High entropy oxides (HEOs) have gained increasing attention as lithium-ion battery anodes, owing to their multi-principal synergistic effect and structural stability. However, the conversion type HEOs also suffer from low intrinsic conductivity, volume expansion, and slow kinetics as the traditional metal oxide. Herein, a (FeCoNiCrMn)2O3 HEO with a hollow multishelled structure and Al-doping (Al-HEO-HoMS) is successfully prepared by a thermal diffusion-assisted template method. The hollow multishelled structure effectively accommodates the volume changes and mitigates structural strains, resulting in excellent electrochemical stability. Most importantly, the inserted Al dopant in Al-HEO-HoMS serves as a pegging points, securely fastening other metallic elements by Al─O bonds to maintain the structural stability of anodes during repeated lithiation/delithiation. Additionally, the abundant oxygen vacancies and the optimized electronic structure brought by Al doping have been validated to accelerate the lithiation kinetics. Consequently, the Al-HEO-HoMS anode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1540 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g−1. The combination of inert metal doping and structural regulation of HEO is expected to alleviate the volume expansion and slow kinetics problem, offering a universal strategy for designing HEO anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) developed rapidly in recent years. However, the defects at the bulk grain boundaries and heterojunction interfaces acting as non-radiative recombination centres and the ion-migration channels severely hinder the charge transport and stability of the PVKs, resulting in low PCE and poor stability. One of the principal impediments to the commercialization of PSCs resides in the challenge posed by this particular aspect. In this work, we employed 2-fluoroisonicotinic acid (2-FINA) as a passivation agent to improve the PCE and stability of n-i-p PSCs by interfacial modification strategy. Owing to the presence of carboxyl (COOH) functional groups and pyridine groups, 2-FINA can strongly interact with uncoordinated Pb2+ and regulate the growth of perovskite crystals, which in turn reduces ion migration and suppress non-radiative recombination along with improves optical properties. Thanks to these improvements, the champion n-i-p PSC solar cell, treated with 2-FINA, showed a PCE of 20.92 %, whereas the untreated one in the same batch exhibited a PCE of 17.13 %. In long-term stability tests, we demonstrated that 2-FINA treatment significantly increases the moisture resistance of non-encapsulated devices.

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) are attractive for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their extensive component scope and regulatable electrochemical performance. However, their own the sluggish kinetics hinder their large-scale application. The modification including adjusting the intrinsic activity and structural design is required to compensate for their inherent shortcomings. Here, oxygen vacancies with goal capability are brought in a special hollow multishelled (LiFeCoNiMnCr)2O3 spheres (Li-HEO-HoMS) through an in-situ formed carbonaceous microspheres as templates coupled with the kirkendall effect to expedite the ion/electron transportation and increase structure/electrochemistry stability. Theory combined with experiment reveal the feasible promotion of Li-ions storage, charge transfer, diffusion dynamics and long-term stability from hollow multishelled sphere structure, oxygen vacancies and entropy-stabilizing effect, which conclusively generates reinforced electrochemical performance. Benefit from these synergistic attributes, the Li-HEO-HoMS exhibits outstanding electrochemical property for LIBs with 767.7 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 500 cycles and still shows a specific capacity of 443.1 mAh g−1 at a high rate of 4 C. The strategy demonstrates the importance of the intrinsic activity and structural design of HEO in tailoring the electrochemical performance.

Developing advanced battery materials, monitoring and predicting the health status of batteries, and effectively managing retired batteries are crucial for accelerating the closure of the whole industrial chain of power lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Machine learning technology plays a vital role in the research, production, service, and retirement of lithium-ion batteries due to its robust learning and predictive capabilities. While there have been detailed and valuable reviews on this topic, a comprehensive summary of machine learning progress from the perspective of full lifecycle management of lithium-ion batteries is still lacking. This review divides the full lifecycle of lithium-ion batteries into three stages: pre-prediction, mid-prediction, and late prediction phases, and summarizes recent advances in different machine learning methods categorized as materials screening, life prediction, and cascade utilization. It also emphasizes the implementation and evaluation of hybrid machine learning models. Finally, potential research opportunities and future directions are presented, mainly from two aspects of battery databases and the application of large-scale time-series models. This review provides valuable guidance and reference for researchers and practitioners to broaden the scope of machine learning for its application in lithium-ion batteries.
