Material design and mechanism study for zinc ion batteries: Applications of density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamic simulations 査読有り国際誌

Zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising candidates for rechargeable energy storage devices due to their high energy density, high safety, and low cost. The theoretical calculation study has substantially helped the understanding of the intrinsic properties of battery materials and the electrochemical reaction mechanism, which are essential for developing the next generation of high-performance battery systems. In this review, we summarized the use of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations in the area of ZIBs, including how to utilize computational chemistry to analyze the ion migration path, evaluate battery performance, and search for material features. Together with a theoretical study, we arrived at a result and recommended future paths for the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and additive development in ZIBs. Specifically, contents are the following: anode engineering, additive selection, electrolyte screening, underpotential deposition (UPD), and the development of cathode varieties (such as halogen, V-based, organic, and Mn-based cathodes). We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of computational chemistry, demonstrating its uses in ZIBs research and highlighting its prospective contributions to the materials sciences and ZIBs development. This account promotes future efforts toward developing theoretical and experimental studies of ZIBs and related material science in rechargeable energy storage applications.

Antimony (Sb) based materials have been regarded as highly competitive anodes sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity. However, it suffers from poor electrochemical performance because of the large volume expansion and the sluggish kinetics of the Na+ ions. To address the above problem, we prepare the core-shell Sb@Sb2O3 heterostructure encapsulated in a porous carbon (Sb@Sb2O3@C) as high performance anode material for SIBs. A facile NaCl template-assisted freeze-drying strategy could easily to acquire the porous carbon structure and the slow oxidation treatment process could realize the component from Sb to Sb@Sb2O3, finally Sb2O3. The perfect combination of core-shell Sb@Sb2O3 heterostructure with robust porous carbon can further accelerate the electron diffusion, promote the Na+ transfer, and enhance the structural stability of the electrode. Benefit from the advantages of structure and composition, the Sb@Sb2O3@C exhibits a long life and high rate capability for SIBs, with an initial discharge/recharge capacity of 530.2/446.7 mAh g−1 and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 84.3 %. In addition, it displays a high rate capacity with 450 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 and excellent long-term cycling stability with 440.6 mAh g−1 after 5000 cycles even at a high current density of 5 A g−1.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have garnered significant attention as cost-efficient and expandable energy conversion devices. Nonetheless, their further utilization is impeded by the rapid deterioration in the capacity of anode materials during cycling. Herein, we have successfully introduced both active (Zn) and non-active (Cu) metal components into Sb by fabricating Cu-doped Sb-Zn (SZC-N) anodes through a template-free novel pulse potential electrodeposition (NPPED) approach. The introduction of Cu demonstrated a crucial role in directing the formation of the uniform structure. On the other hand, active “Zn” increases overall capacity and serves as a cushion against the volume expansion of Sb. Notably, the SZC-N exhibits enhanced charge diffusion while maintaining the structural integrity of the electrode, making it a promising choice for SIBs. Interestingly, the SZC-N electrode demonstrated remarkable cycling and rate performance, manifesting an excellent reversible capacity of 380.9 mAh·g−1 after 250 cycles, with an outstanding capacity retention of 80 % when operated at 1 C. Furthermore, it achieved a noteworthy capacity of 454.1 mAh·g−1 at a high current density of 10 C. In contrast, both the SZC-R and SZ-C anodes only yielded 52.9 and 3.9 mAh·g−1 (after 250 cycles), moreover, delivering inferior rate performance. The increased cyclic performance of the SZC-N electrode can be ascribed to the presence of a Cu network, which facilitates charge transport and promotes the stabilization of the electrode structure. The findings suggest that binder-free anode materials produced through the NPPED method present a promising opportunity for SIBs.

A novel sheet-like tin-based metal-organic framework exhibited a specific capacity for lithium storage as high as 1033.3 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 with excellent cycling stability. This framework, due to its unique porous structure and multiple lithium storage sites, could better cope with challenges occurring during lithium insertion/extraction than could traditional tin materials.

Novel paddy-like Bi-Sb-Cu alloy fabricated via pulse reverse potential electrodeposition enabling high-performance sodium-ion batteries 査読有り国際誌

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have gained remarkable interest as cost-effective and scalable energy storage devices. Nevertheless, their further application has been significantly hindered due to the limited selection of desirable anode materials that can provide both high capacity and excellent cycling stability. Herein, we developed a hierarchical paddy-like Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 alloy anode on Cu foil via template-free pulse reverse potential electrodeposition. The Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 anode obtains a considerable specific capacity of 529.5 mAh·g−1 after 120 cycles with a remarkable capacity retention of 95.5 %, signifying a capacity loss of only 0.0375 % per cycle. However, Bi44.9Sb55.1 anodes obtained by the pulse potential electrodeposition strategy reveal a conventional irregular cluster structure, delivering only 64.5 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles and also demonstrating inferior rate performance compared to Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 anodes. The enhanced cycling performance of the paddy-like Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 anode is primarily attributed to the introduced Cu-doped network facilitating the rapid diffusion of Na+ and also ensuring the stability of the electrode structure. Moreover, the unique paddy-like structure of Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 mitigates volume expansion-related stress and facilitates efficient charge transport through open channels. This is further corroborated by conducting CV measurements, indicating a greater capacitive contribution in the case of the Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 electrode compared to the Bi44.9Sb55.1 electrode. Additionally, SEM images show a stabilized surface morphology for the Bi42.3Sb35.2Cu22.5 electrode after cycling, demonstrating improved electrochemical performance. This work offers new insights into the development of high-performance anode materials for SIBs.

Single-function binders may not fulfill the diverse application requirements of Si, binder design strategy is reconginzed as an effective way to imrove the performance of Si-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries. In this study, a novel multifunctional polymer binder BDSA–DPA–PEGCE (BDP) incorporated by hard/soft interacting phases was designed. The hard domain of the BDP polymer binder is achieved through reversible covalent disulfide exchange, supramolecular noncovalent cooperative H-bonding, and π-π interactions, endowing self-healing ability and enhanced mechanical properties to maintain Si anodes integrity. The soft phase is dominated by the polyether segment, establishing efficient ion-hopping transportation pathways. Meanwhile, the pre-lithiation strategy is employed for compensating the consumption of Li resources. The volume expansion of the Si-based electrodes coordinated by the BDP binder is effectively suppressed, realizing improved cycling stability, high initial coulombic efficiency of 85.2%, and superior rate performance for Si-based half–cells and NCM523//Si/C full–cells. The BDP binder also promotes the formation of dense, stable and homogeneous SEI layer. This work offers valuable insights for developing multifunctional polymer binders to satisfy the specific demands of Si-based electrodes for rechargeable batteries.

A Strain-Free Semicoherent Interface Achieved via Epitaxial Growth of CsPbBr<inf>3</inf> on CdS Quantum Dots 査読有り国際誌

The epitaxial growth of heterojunctions can reduce interface defects and enhance the stability of the crystal structures. However, a higher lattice mismatch can cause local lattice distortions at the interface, resulting in relaxed strains that eventually evolve into structural defects. Herein, a nearly zero-mismatch semicoherent interface was formed with a lattice mismatch (0.3%) by epitaxial growth CsPbBr3 on CdS quantum dots (QDs), leading to a strain-free semicoherent interface. Results demonstrated that CdS/CsPbBr3 heteronanocrystals (HNCs) had excellent stability and high photocatalytic performance compared with CsPbBr3. Theoretical calculations show that the Br-Cd bond forms strong electron coupling, which not only facilitates rapid electron transfer but also provides better structural stability. Compared to the individual CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs), the CdS/CsPbBr3 HNCs exhibited higher stability and 2.1 times higher photocatalytic activity. It suggests that CdS/CsPbBr3 HNCs have potential application value in energy and environmental fields.

Developing non-noble and high-performance electrocatalysts that are suitable for a wide pH range is viable for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), whereas it has a great challenge to design suitable catalyst to overcome the slow water dissociation kinetics. Herein, we report a novel and large-scale tactics using natural kelp as a precursor by utilizing the super high water-absorption capacity to construct Co/Mo2C nanoparticles dispersed in N-doped carbon matrix with lamellar-crossing networks (Co/Mo2C@N-CKNs). Benefiting from synergistic advantages of Co-doped, Mo2C, as well as on the N-doped carbon, the Co/Mo2C@N-CKNs show superior HER performance in different pH condition with low overpotential of 63, 338 and 98mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 0.1 M PBS and 1 M KOH respectively, and remaining stable even after 50 h of testing. This work may supply a common and hopeful strategy to realize non-noble and high-performance HER electrocatalysts with pH-universal work condition.

Facile and scalable pulsed electrodeposition of bi-active Bi-Sb alloy for high performance sodium ion batteries 査読有り国際誌

Although sodium ion batteries (SIB) have shown great potential for large-scale energy storage systems, the development of high-performance anode materials for SIB is crucial for their progress. However, the cycling performance of SIB is currently limited by severe volume changes during the sodiation/desodiation process. To overcome this problem, a bi-active metal alloying strategy has been proposed. In this study, we utilized pulsed electrodeposition to prepare bismuth-antimony alloy anode materials. The resulting Bi44.9Sb55.1 alloy anode exhibited exceptional specific capacity, rate performance, and stability. After the second cycle, the discharge/charge capacities were 505.3 mAh·g−1/496.7 mAh·g−1 at 1 A·g−1, with a coulombic efficiency of over 98 %. Even after 50 cycles, the capacities remained at 494.7 mAh·g−1/481.9 mAh·g−1 with a capacity retention rate of 97.9 %. These excellent properties were attributed to the stable structure and suitable voids for electron transport and ion diffusion in the Bi44.9Sb55.1 alloy, which effectively mitigated volume expansion during cycling. The reaction kinetics and mechanism were studied using cyclic voltammetry, in situ X-ray diffraction, and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. Our work provides valuable insights for the development of bi-active metal alloy anodes for SIB.

In recent years, researchers show great interest in electrode materials for sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) that combine the advantages of batteries and capacitors. And the high specific capacity transition metal oxides that can be used as anodes for SIHCs attract widespread attention. Herein, one-step facile hydrothermal synthesis of the CoMoO4 nanorods as the transition metal oxides are successfully obtained. Due to the well bear to the volume change, the SIHCs exhibit superior electrochemical performance and stability with CoMoO4 nanorods anode during charge and discharge. At a current density of 0.05 A g−1, with an expanded potential from 0 to 3.0 V, the specific capacitance and the high energy density of CoMoO4//AC are 37.2 F g−1 and 63.3 Wh kg−1, respectively. Meanwhile, the stability of the CoMoO4//AC in the long cycle is as expected. After 6000 cycles, the capacity retention of the CoMoO4//AC SIHC is 90% while the coulombic efficiency is always around 99%.

Bi-doped CuCeO<inf>2−x</inf> nanorod catalysts for photothermal CO-PROX in H<inf>2</inf>-rich streams: Enhanced oxygen vacancy and light absorption capacity 査読有り国際誌

The wide band gap of ceria limited the light absorption and photothermal conversion of copper-ceria catalyst for photothermal preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX). In the present work, doping Bi element was adopted to regulate the energy band and catalytic performance of CuCeO2−x nanorod catalysts for photothermal CO-PROX. Bi/CuCeO2−x nanorods were synthesized by co-precipitation hydrothermal and deposition precipitation method. The Bi/CuCeO2−x catalyst with the molar ratio of Bi/Ce 2.5% exhibited the best catalytic performance and the CO conversion reached 90% under 2.5 suns with a surface temperature of 120 °C. The doped Bi species were incorporated into the CeO2 lattice and promoted the formation of oxygen vacancy sites and the strong Cu-Ce interaction, as revealed by XRD, XPS, Raman and H2-TPR results. In addition, doping Bi reduced the band gap of ceria nanorod from 2.77 to 2.47 eV and remarkably enhanced the UV–vis light response and photogenerated carrier separation of Bi/CuCeO2−x-2.5.

Resolving the inherent defects at the interfaces and grain boundaries of perovskite films is crucial for achieving highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This study introduces an antisolvent solubilization (AS) approach to enhance the solubilization of the bulk organic ammonium salt 2-Thiophenemethylammonium Iodide (ThMAI), which has limited solubility in low-polarity antisolvents. The results demonstrated that the AS approach could effectively passivate both shallow and deep defects in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs). Furthermore, the ThMAI prepared using the AS method could react with excess PbI2 and facilitate the crystallization of the OIHPs, thereby improving light absorption, suppressing non-radiative recombination, and enhancing carrier extraction. As a result, PSCs prepared by using the AS method achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.69%, representing a 10% PCE improvement compared to normal devices. PSCs based on the AS method also demonstrated significantly improved heat and humidity stability.

Insights into the photocatalytic mechanism of g-C<inf>3</inf>N<inf>4</inf>/Cs<inf>2</inf>BBr<inf>6</inf> (B = Pt, Sn, Ti) heterojunction photocatalysts by density functional theory calculations 査読有り国際誌

Among all well-studied photocatalysts, g-C3N4 has attracted significant research interest in various fields. However, the recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in unmodified g-C3N4 is high, leading to a decrease in photocatalytic efficiency. In practical applications, it is often necessary to introduce appropriate amounts and types of surface cocatalysts to amplify the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. The heterojunctions between g-C3N4 and perovskite materials can facilitate efficient charge separation, leading to improved photocatalytic performance while maintaining the stability of the photocatalyst. In recent years, lead-free halide double perovskites, such as A2BX6, have been widely applied in the field of photocatalysis. In this study, we conducted systematic investigations on the band structures and charge transfer of g-C3N4/Cs2BBr6 (B = Pt, Sn, Ti) heterojunctions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and explored the interaction between the Cs2BBr6(001) surface and the g-C3N4. The results show that the g-C3N4/Cs2PtBr6 as well as g-C3N4/Cs2SnBr6 heterojunctions exhibit staggered band alignment, which facilitates the migration of photogenerated charge carriers and enhances catalytic activity. Besides, the g-C3N4/Cs2TiBr6 heterojunction exhibited a straddling gap. Furthermore, the analysis of density of states, charge density differences, and Bader charges reveals that the presence of an internal electric field promotes the partition of electron-hole pairs at the heterojunction interface, effectively suppressing the recombination of charge carriers. Therefore, depending on the specific metal ions at the B site in the g-C3N4/Cs2BBr6 structure, the resulting heterojunctions will exhibit different band alignments and photocatalytic performances. This work contributes to providing theoretical insights for the design of novel high activity heterojunction photocatalysts.

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) have emerged as a focal point of interest in academic research and industrial strategic planning. Zinc powder (ZP) is poised to assume a prominent position in both future research and practical applications due to its high Zn utilization rate and processability. However, critical challenges need to be addressed before realizing substantial progress. Notably, severe voltage polarization and gas production of ZP electrodes stand out as the primary causes of battery failure, differing with zinc foil where short circuits caused by zinc dendrites contribute to battery failure. While numerous comprehensive reviews have offered effective strategies for zinc foil, a systematic summary of ZP electrodes is still lacking. For ZP, electrode preparation dictates the performance. This review summarizes the criteria for optimal ZP electrodes, covering electrode components, preparation methods, and technique parameters. It emphatically introduces the underlying causes and strategies of water-related side reactions and briefly analyzes the stripping/plating behaviors of ZP electrodes. The status quo of ZP-based batteries is then discussed in categories of ZP, current collector, conductive scaffold, binder, and electrolytes. Finally, potential avenues for future research are proposed from three aspects to enhance the focus on ZP electrodes and facilitate the practical application of AZMBs.

Converting superfluous CO2 into value-added chemicals is regarded as a practical approach for alleviating the global warming problem. Powered by renewable electricity, CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) have attracted intense interest owing to their favorable efficiency. Metal catalysts exhibit high catalytic efficiency for CO2 reduction. However, the reaction mechanisms have yet to be investigated. In this study, CO2RR to CH3OH catalyzed by CuAg bimetal is theoretically investigated. The configurations and stability of the catalysts and the reaction pathway are studied. The results unveil the mechanisms of the catalysis process and prove the feasibility of CuAg clusters as efficient CO2RR catalysts, serving as guidance for further experimental exploration. This study provides guidance and a reference for future work in the design of mixed-metal catalysts with high CO2RR performance.

The efficacy of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries crucially hinges on the sulfur immobilization process, representing a pivotal avenue for bolstering their operational efficiency and durability. This dissertation primarily tackles the formidable challenge posed by the high solubility of polysulfides in electrolyte solutions. Quantum chemical computations were leveraged to scrutinize the interactions of MXene materials, graphene (Gr) oxide, and ionic liquids with polysulfides, yielding pivotal binding energy metrics. Comparative assessments were conducted with the objective of pinpointing MXene materials, with a specific focus on d-Ti3C2 materials, evincing augmented binding energies with polysulfides and ionic liquids demonstrating diminished binding energies. Moreover, a diverse array of Gr oxide materials was evaluated for their adsorption capabilities. Scrutiny of the computational outcomes unveiled an augmentation in the solubility of selectively screened d-Ti3C2 MXene and ionic liquids—vis à vis one or more of the five polysulfides. Therefore, the analysis encompasses an in-depth comparative assessment of the stability of polysulfide adsorption by d-Ti3C2 MXene materials, Gr oxide materials, and ionic liquids across diverse ranges.

Antimony (Sb) is recognized as a potential electrode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its huge reserves, affordability, and high theoretical capacity (660 mAh·g−1). However, Sb-based materials experience significant volume expansion during cycling, leading to comminution of the active substance and limiting their practical use in SIBs. Therefore, the volume expansion issue of Sb-based materials during charging/discharging must be solved to create high-performance SIBs. This paper presents a detailed review of structural engineering of Sb-based electrode materials, focusing on the performance effects of different kinds of structures on advanced performance SIBs. Finally, the future development and the challenges of Sb-based materials are prospected. This paper can provide specific perspectives on the structure construction and optimization of Sb-based anode materials, so as to promote the rapid development and practical applications of SIBs. Industrial urea synthesis production uses NH3 from the Haber-Bosch method, followed by the reaction of NH3 with CO2, which is an energy-consuming technique. More thorough evaluations of the electrocatalytic C−N coupling reaction are needed for the urea synthesis development process, catalyst design, and the underlying reaction mechanisms. However, challenges of adsorption and activation of reactant and suppression of side reactions still hinder its development, making the systematic review necessary. This review meticulously outlines the progress in electrochemical urea synthesis by utilizing different nitrogen (NO3−, N2, NO2−, and N2O) and carbon (CO2 and CO) sources. Additionally, it delves into advanced methods in materials design, such as doping, facet engineering, alloying, and vacancy introduction. Furthermore, the existing classes of urea synthesis catalysts are clearly defined, which include 2D nanomaterials, materials with Mott–Schottky structure, materials with artificially frustrated Lewis pairs, single−atom catalysts (SACs), and heteronuclear dual−atom catalysts (HDACs). A comprehensive analysis of the benefits, drawbacks, and latest developments in modern urea detection techniques is discussed. It is aspired that this review will serve as a valuable reference for subsequent designs of highly efficient electrocatalysts and the development of strategies to enhance the performance of electrochemical urea synthesis.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is one of the most promising technologies to address global freshwater shortages. Compared with the integrated structure, monolithic system with asymmetric wettability can be used alone to reduce the structural complexity without sacrificing the localized management of heat. Herein, a monolithic structure of Janus Fe3O4@IF evaporator with asymmetric wettability has been fabricated via a simple in situ hydrothermal method. The low-cost Janus Fe3O4@IF evaporator can be self-floating with a sizable surface area, high porosity, and low density, which presents excellent light absorption features of 98.1% within a broadband wavelength range of 200–2500 nm. Due to the strong capillarity action and Janus wettability, the evaporation is efficient (1.64 kg m−2 h−1) and stable even treating with highly concentrated brine of 20 wt%. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for achieving high-performance solar-driven interfacial evaporation and superior salt rejection capability, which can be potentially utilized in seawater desalination.

The exploration of nontoxic Sn-based perovskites as a viable alternative to their toxic Pb-based counterparts has garnered increased attention. However, the power conversion efficiency of Sn-based perovskite solar cells lags significantly behind their Pb-based counterparts. This study presents a ternary passivation strategy aimed at enhancing device performance, employing [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric-acid-methyl-ester (PCBM), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and indene C60 bisadduct (ICBA). These components play crucial roles in managing energy levels and enhancing carrier transportation, respectively. The results reveal that the introduction of the ternary system leads to improvements in carrier collection and transportation, accompanied by a suppression of the recombination process. Ultimately, the champion device achieves a remarkable performance with an efficiency of 14.64%. Notably, the device also exhibits robust operational and long-term stored stability.
