Purpose: This study explored the use of advanced computational techniques in vocal analysis to improve the assessment of psychiatric symptoms and cognitive functions in schizophrenia. We hypothesized that digital signal processing techniques, such as mel spectrogram and mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), could be used for objective evaluation of psychiatric symptoms and cognitive functions based on the analysis of alterations in the vocal characteristics. Patients and Methods: Voice samples from 14 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia (92.9% female) were collected using a microphone array, and vocal features were extracted from the samples using mel spectrogram and MFCC techniques. Psychiatric symptoms and cognitive functions were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the computer-based tool Cognitrax. Results: We found significant negative correlations between specific vocal features (mel spectrogram and MFCC) and cognitive functions, particularly working memory (β = −0.645, p = 0.023) and sustained attention (β = −0.626, p = 0.029). No direct correlations were found between vocal features and psychiatric symptoms, as measured by PANSS scores. However, the correlations between cognitive functions and PANSS total scores were significant (β = −0.604, p = 0.037), suggesting that cognitive functions may mediate the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and vocal characteristics. Conclusion: This study underscores the potential of vocal analysis as a non-invasive tool for assessing cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Future research should focus on expanding the sample size and including diverse populations to enhance the generalizability of these findings.

Medication recommendations are vital for healthcare AI, enhancing patient care and alleviating healthcare professional’s workloads. Accurate drug suggestions support physicians in making informed choices. Existing research focuses on limited features, overlooking the rich data in Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Also, physicians typically prescribe based on similar cases, a consideration insufficiently addressed in current predictive models, potentially leading to treatment inconsistencies. This research introduces three advancements to the medication prediction system. Firstly, we enhance the framework by incorporating additional data sources, such as lab events and patient demographics, for a comprehensive view of health and treatment. Secondly, we propose a patient-similarity-based retrieval framework to derive candidate medications from similar cases as supplementary features. Thirdly, we develop an intra-visit differential attention mechanism for a refined understanding of patient responses during a visit. We also implement inter-visit attention to track patient health progression over time, allowing our model to adjust to changing conditions and improve medication predictions. We validate our approach using the established MIMIC-III EHR dataset. Our results indicate significant improvements over leading state-of-the-art models across various evaluation metrics, highlighting the efficacy of our enhancements in medication prediction.

Dressing is a critical component of Activity of Daily Living (ADLs). The development of assistive technology for dressing tasks is urgently needed from the viewpoint of privacy, for example, to prevent the wearer from being seen in the nude. Despite their importance, these technologies are underutilized in garment donning compared to other ADLs. The reasons for the lack of utilization of assistive technology are that the task is complex, as it involves handling individuals with large individual differences in height and symptoms and requires manipulation of flexible clothing. Addressing these variances presents a formidable academic challenge. Our previous study identified periodic patterns in human movements during robot-assisted dressing and noted individual variability in these patterns. Capitalizing on this finding, we propose a novel control strategy for a robot that adapts to individual needs during dressing, employing the ‘Assist-As-Needed’ (AAN) principle from physical therapy. The proposed control method uses Central Pattern Generators (CPG) that can be synchronously controlled in response to external forces, enabling model-free control without human modeling. We utilize the Rowat-Selverston CPG model, which is recognized for its adaptive response to human motions in human-robot interactions such as with handshaking robots. A simulator of the Rowat-Selverston CPG was created. The output of the CPG was confirmed by inputting the data set obtained in previous studies, and the parameters were adjusted. The CPG output was then applied to the recorded target joint trajectory for the dressing assistance. We prepared a replay of the default trajectory, a trajectory with simple harmonic motion applied, and a trajectory with CPG output applied, and confirmed whether individual adaptation according to the AAN was possible through subject experiments. The experimental results showed that the Rowat-Selverston CPG control method enables individual adaptive dressing assistance according to the AAN principle. This study summarizes these methods and results and contributes to the realization of an individually adaptive system that follows the AAN principle, especially in developing assistive technology.

In a diverse society, a crucial aspect of developing social robots is their ability to adapt to each individual's characteristics. There are two types of adaptation: physical and social. In pHRI, attention is paid to physical adaptation, but by investigating the social meaning of physical adaptation, we can extend it to social adaptation. Although it is a physical interaction, a handshake is a social action with complex meanings. We realized a handshaking robot with a Rowat-Selverston CPG controller that can synchronize with human movements. This study aims to clarify the relationship between physical and social adaptation by examining individual characteristics inferred from the internal state of the robot and human-robotic social attributes. Our finding is that there is a correlation between the internal state of the robot and some robotic social attributes. It was also found that the length of the handshake had little effect on these social perceptions. This study highlights the complex interplay between robot physical adaptability and social attribution, providing a foundation for developing robots capable of personalized and socially meaningful interactions.

The sense of touch plays an indispensable role in human perception by enabling the discernment of various objects based on their textures, roughness, and shapes. In the realm of robotics, touch sensors play a vital role in the manipulation and control of objects. By providing information on mechanical properties, these sensors facilitate the visualization of grip, shear, and pressure force at contact points. However, handling deformable objects such as clothing poses a significant challenge. While some research relies on visual sensors for the detection and classification of clothing types, this research focuses on leveraging tactile sensors for the discrimination and classification of deformable surfaces in real-time.The aim is centered on soft surfaces, with a specific focus on examining seven different types of materials. The system we present focuses on signal processing and machine learning techniques for cloth recognition, and classification in real time. The system integrates a soft touch sensor fingertip into a robotic arm to achieve these objectives.The current study has developed a classification model leveraging Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. The objective of this model is to accurately classify seven distinct types of clothing by analyzing their texture features.

The challenge of human-robot collaboration, particularly in the context of enhancing the productivity of work processes, has been a pivotal area of research and development for many years. Despite significant advancements, there remains a substantial gap in the design of these systems to cater specifically to individuals with disabilities. This paper presents an innovative approach in assistive robotics, focusing on the development of a work cell designed to facilitate individuals with single-arm functionality. Through the integration of depth camera technology, machine learning algorithms, and Mediapipe human tracking, our system is capable of interpreting human intentions, thereby making interactions with robots more intuitive and effective. Central to our research is the design of a specialized workspace that assists in object handling and incorporates a fully functional One-Handed Soldering Tool, integrated within a robotic arm setup. This work cell is tailored for users with limited arm functionality, demonstrating the system's versatility and providing invaluable insights into the practical implementation of applied robotics to bridge the theoretical and practical aspects of assistive technology.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients experience the “wearing-off phenomenon”, where their symptoms resurface before they can take the following medication. As time passes, the duration of the medicine’s efficacy reduces, leading to discomfort among PD patients. Therefore, patients and clinicians must meticulously observe and document symptom changes to administer appropriate treatment. Forecasting the PD wearing-off phenomenon is challenging due to the class imbalance from the difficulty documenting the phenomenon. This paper compares different approaches for handling class imbalance in forecasting the PD wearing-off phenomenon using the fitness tracker and smartwatch dataset (wearing-off dataset): oversampling, undersampling, and combining the two. Previous studies reported the potential use of commercially-worn fitness tracker datasets to predict and forecast wearing-off periods. However, some participants’ high false positives and negatives have been observed with the developed models [16, 17]. This paper compares different approaches to handling class imbalance in the wearing-off dataset. First, changes in the data collection process and tools were made during the data collection phase, as the nursing staff struggled with the data collection tool. Second, different existing oversampling and undersampling techniques were used to improve the ratio of wearing-off labels to non-wearing-off instances. Finally, adjustments to forecast probabilities were applied due to the resampling in the second step. The results showed that an XGBoost model trained with an oversampled dataset using the SMOTE algorithm increased the F1 and AUC-ROC curve scores by 7.592% and 0.754%, respectively, compared to the based XGBoost model. The models in this paper only used the last hour’s data to forecast the next hour’s wearing-off. The change in the amount of input data also improved the F1 and AUC-ROC curve scores compared with the models that used the current period or the previous day’s data [16, 17]. These improvements in forecasting wearing-off can help PD patients and clinicians monitor, record, and prepare for wearing-off periods, as we aim to lessen the false positives and negatives in the forecasting results.

The wet-dog shake behavior (WDS) is a short-duration behavior relevant to the study of various animal disease models, including acute seizures, morphine abstinence, and nicotine withdrawal. However, no animal behavior detection system has included WDS. In this work, we present a multi-view animal behavior detection system based on image classification and use it to detect rats’ WDS behavior. Our system uses a novel time-multi-view fusion scheme that does not rely on artificial features (feature engineering) and is flexible to adapt to other animals and behaviors. It can use one or more views for higher accuracy. We tested our framework to classify WDS behavior in rats and compared the results using different amounts of cameras. Our results show that the use of additional views increases the performance of WDS behavioral classification. With three cameras, we achieved a precision of 0.91 and a recall of 0.86. Our multi-view animal behavior detection system represents the first system capable of detecting WDS and has potential applications in various animal disease models.

<p>In this paper, we propose a highly accurate specific person tracking system for home service robots. This study focuses on Selected Online Ada-Boosting (SOAB) and Kernelized Correlation Filters (KCF). It proposes the Selected KCF (SKCF), which combines features of fast adaptation to a specific person and robustness for occlusion. We also propose a system that combines You Only Look Once (YOLO), a real-time object detection algorithm, with SKCF to initialize and recover the tracking system. The proposed system runs at 17 [fps] in an experimental environment with an Intel Core i7-8700K CPU and an NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU. We also show that the tracking accuracy of the proposed system on public datasets for tracking specific persons is better than that of conventional methods. </p>

Introduction: Patients with schizophrenia experience the most prolonged hospital stay in Japan. Also, the high re-hospitalization rate affects their quality of life (QoL). Despite being an effective predictor of treatment, QoL has not been widely utilized due to time constraints and lack of interest. As such, this study aimed to estimate the schizophrenic patients' subjective quality of life using speech features. Specifically, this study uses speech from patients with schizophrenia to estimate the subscale scores, which measure the subjective QoL of the patients. The objectives were to (1) estimate the subscale scores from different patients or cross-sectional measurements, and 2) estimate the subscale scores from the same patient in different periods or longitudinal measurements. Methods: A conversational agent was built to record the responses of 18 schizophrenic patients on the Japanese Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (JSQLS) with three subscales: “Psychosocial,” “Motivation and Energy,” and “Symptoms and Side-effects.” These three subscales were used as objective variables. On the other hand, the speech features during measurement (Chromagram, Mel spectrogram, Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient) were used as explanatory variables. For the first objective, a trained model estimated the subscale scores for the 18 subjects using the Nested Cross-validation (CV) method. For the second objective, six of the 18 subjects were measured twice. Then, another trained model estimated the subscale scores for the second time using the 18 subjects' data as training data. Ten different machine learning algorithms were used in this study, and the errors of the learned models were compared. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the mean RMSE of the cross-sectional measurement was 13.433, with k-Nearest Neighbors as the best model. Meanwhile, the mean RMSE of the longitudinal measurement was 13.301, using Random Forest as the best. RMSE of less than 10 suggests that the estimated subscale scores using speech features were close to the actual JSQLS subscale scores. Ten out of 18 subjects were estimated with an RMSE of less than 10 for cross-sectional measurement. Meanwhile, five out of six had the same observation for longitudinal measurement. Future studies using a larger number of subjects and the development of more personalized models based on longitudinal measurements are needed to apply the results to telemedicine for continuous monitoring of QoL.

<p>In Japan, the shortage of caregivers due to the aging of the population is a serious issue and the demand for care robots is increasing. Changing and wiping, which is one of the main care tasks, is still not sufficiently skilled and is often carried out by carers alone. Against this background, we are developing a dressing assistance robot system. However, the task of picking hangers from the hanger rack was a bottleneck in our dressing assistance robot system. Therefore, we developed a hanger recognition method based on active object recognition for implementation in a dressing assistance robot system and improved the recognition accuracy. In this paper, the usefulness of a recognition method using active object recognition in the hanger recognition task is evaluated through experiments and future prospects for integration into a dressing assistance system are described. </p>

To investigate biological mechanisms underlying social behaviors and their deficits, social communication via ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in mice has received considerable attention as a powerful experimental model. The advances in sound localization technology have facilitated the analysis of vocal interactions between multiple mice. However, existing sound localization systems are built around distributed-microphone arrays, which require a special recording arena and long processing time. Here, we report a novel acoustic camera system, USVCAM, which enables simpler and faster USV localization and assignment. The system comprises recently developed USV segmentation algorithms with a modification for overlapping vocalizations that results in high accuracy. Using USVCAM, we analyzed USV communications in a conventional home cage, and demonstrated novel vocal interactions in female ICR mice under a resident-intruder paradigm. The extended applicability and usability of USVCAM may facilitate future studies investigating typical and atypical vocal communication and social behaviors, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

Caregivers experience back pain due to concentrated load on the lumbar region. It is essential to understand the correct working posture because the wrong nursing posture causes the concentrated load to the lower back. The purpose of this study is to build a framework for estimating the fatigue state from the median frequency of surface EMG to clarify the relationship between performance and fatigue due to different working postures. The tasks measured here were two movements of lifting heavy objects: Stoop, which involves lifting with the force of the waist, and Squat, which involves lifting with the force of the legs. Ten healthy adults were measured in the experiment. There was no difference in the average number of lifting movements of the subjects, 36.2 for Stoop and 35.9 for Squat. However, the number of times the subjects with shallow lumbar flexion angle in Squat was recorded much higher than the average. Single regression analysis of the intermediate frequencies of the surface EMG showed that the slope of the intermediate frequency of the Stoop movement was large, except for the right erector spinae muscle. These results suggest that that movements using leg force rather than lower back force would reduce the risk of low back pain.

Sit-to-stand (STS) transition is one of the most bio-mechanically challenging task necessary for performing activities of daily life. With muscle strength being the most dominant, many co-occurring factors influence how individuals perform STS. This study investigates the STS changes and STS failure caused by strength deficits using the trajectories generated employing an open-loop single shooting optimization framework and musculoskeletal models. The strength deficits were introduced by simultaneously scaling the maximum isometric strength of muscles in steps of 20%. The optimization framework could generate successful STS transitions for models with up to 60% strength deficits. The joint angle kinematics, muscle activation patterns, and the ground reaction forces from the 0% strength deficit model’s STS transition match those observed experimentally for a healthy adult in literature. Comparison of different strength deficit STS trajectories shows that the vasti muscle saturation leads to reduced activation of the antagonistic hamstring muscle, and consequently, the gluteus maximus muscle saturation. Subsequently, the observation of reduced hamstring activation and the motion tracking results are used to suggest the vasti muscle weakness to be responsible for STS failure. Finally, the successful STS trajectory of the externally assisted 80% strength deficit model is presented to demonstrate the optimization framework’s capability to synthesize assisted STS transition. The trajectory features utilization of external assistance as and when needed to complement strength deficits for successful STS transition. Our results will help plan intervention and design novel STS assistance devices.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience motor and non-motor symptoms, which affect their quality of life (QoL). Despite the use of Levodopa treatment to alleviate these symptoms, the "wearing-off phenomenon" (WO) occurs, and symptoms resurface. Thus, PD patients have to closely monitor and report their symptoms, the effects, and the duration of levodopa treatment to their doctors for a customized treatment. Towards predicting the WO among PD patients, this paper aims to understand the relationship between the WO symptoms and the collected fitness tracker data using a fitness tracker and a smartphone application. Our preliminary study among two patients within a 30-day collection period showed that PD patients experience WO symptoms with a unique relationship and association with fitness tracker datasets. The participant's sleep duration was negatively correlated with sharp pain and tremors. On the other hand, the other participant's total sleep duration was positively correlated with symptoms. Our analysis also showed that the time elapsed since the last medicine intake was a strong predictor of WO, aside from sleep duration and step count. These results suggest the possibility of using the fitness tracker dataset to estimate the WO among PD patients. The results would be helpful in the management of WO and PD in general.

<p>Parkinson’s disease (PD) typically causes motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS), where Freezing of Gait (FOG) is motor symptoms and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), including changes in Heart Rate (HR), consider as non-motor manifestations. Most existing walker systems widely focus on FOG analysis without giving much attention to health monitoring feedback during rehabilitation. This study presents a smart robotics walker system (SRW) for HR monitoring and walking rehabilitation. The system framework interacts with a voice-based virtual assistant and simultaneous use of a PPG sensor. The proposed system framework provides an IoT platform by synchronizing real-time heart rates and rehabilitation information of the user. Meantime, PPG data interjects with the efforts of HEBI actuators to stop driving. The system performance presented a strategic analysis of HR changes with a non-PD person and PD patient by 10m steady line of walking. The result showed that HR rapidly increases while performing with PD patients than a non-PD subject, which validates the performance of walking rehabilitation. In addition, the user can know their HR condition in normal and abnormal situations, and the therapist can evaluate the success of the rehabilitation information from the IoT environment. We aim to provide a better rehabilitation IoT platform with SRW considering health conditions like the HR patterns of the user. The system can implement with any existing walker for PD patients.</p>

Carbon nanotubes (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have been investigated as potential materials for tomato-harvesting applications. The current-voltage (I-V) and current time (I-t) properties, as well as tomato hardness measurement and support-vector machine learning, were used to determine the performance of the sensor with respect to sensitivity, response time, accuracy, and detection limit of the nanocomposite. The data suggested an accurate (± 5.2%) measurement in a low-weight region of tomato. Narrowing of the I-V hysteresis curve towards a higher weight region was observed as a result of the increase in electron pathways. The fabricated sensor displayed a higher sensitivity (15 mV / mu text{m} ) than the commercial sensor (1 mV / mu text{m} ). In addition, machine learning of the resistance-displacement curve data yielded an average accuracy level of 0.67 when tested using acquired data.

Lab mice are widely used in the medical and biological fields for various purposes. For example, the social behavior of mice can provide important information about the effect of drugs or mutations in mice. However, studying behavior of mice is difficult because often experiments can generate long video data that a researcher must manually annotate and view. This study proposes a behavioral clustering model that takes simple features from video data and forms separate clusters for different mice interactions in latent space. In contrast to past works that detect a predefined set of mice interactions, our proposed model can handle any number of different interactions. Moreover, we also detect ultrasonic vocalizations of mice to study both vocal and non-vocal interactions in the same framework. Although our model was developed on two interacting mice data, it can be easily extended to other animals because of the simple features we use for clustering. Contributions-We present a multi-modal framework that takes mice video and sound data and automatically cluster social behavior in latent space that can be easily visualized in a single figure.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients experience varying symptoms related to their illness. Therefore, each patient needs a tailored treatment program from their doctors. One approach is the use of anti-PD medicines. However, a “wearing-off” phenomenon occurs when these medicines lose their effect. As a result, patients start to experience the symptoms again until their next medicine intake. In the long term, the duration of “wearing-off” begins to shorten. Thus, patients and doctors have to work together to manage PD symptoms effectively. This study aims to develop a prediction model that can determine the “wearing-off” of anti-PD medicine. We used fitness tracker data and self-reported symptoms from a smartphone application in a real-world environment. Two participants wore the fitness tracker for a month while reporting any symptoms using the Wearing-Off Questionnaire (WoQ-9) on a smartphone application. Then, we processed and combined the datasets for each participant’s models. Our analysis produced prediction models for each participant. The average balanced accuracy with the best hyperparameters was at 70.0–71.7% for participant 1 and 76.1–76.9% for participant 2, suggesting that our approach would be helpful to manage the “wearing-off” of anti-PD medicine, motor fluctuations of PD patients, and customized treatment for PD patients.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease that affects motor and non-motor symptoms. Postural instability and freezing of gait (FOG) are considered motor symptoms of PD resulting in falling. In this study, we investigated the effect of simultaneous use of a robotic walker and a pneumatic walking assist device (PWAD) for PD patients on gait features. The pneumatic actuated artificial muscle on the leg and actuators on the walker produce mutual induced stimulation, allowing the user to suppress FOG and maintain a stable gait pattern while walking. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated by conducting an 8 [m] straight-line walking task by a healthy subject with (a) RW (robotic walker), (b) simultaneous use of an RW and a PWAD, and some gait features for each condition were analyzed. The increasing stride length and decreasing stance phase duration in the gait cycle suggest that simultaneous use of a robotic walker and a pneumatic walking assist device would effectively decrease FOG and maintain a stable gait pattern for PD patients.

Video-based markerless motion capture permits quantification of an animal's pose and motion, with a high spatiotemporal resolution in a naturalistic context, and is a powerful tool for analyzing the relationship between the animal's behaviors and its brain functions. Macaque monkeys are excellent non-human primate models, especially for studying neuroscience. Due to the lack of a dataset allowing training of a deep neural network for the macaque's markerless motion capture in the naturalistic context, it has been challenging to apply this technology for macaques-based studies. In this study, we created MacaquePose, a novel open dataset with manually labeled body part positions (keypoints) for macaques in naturalistic scenes, consisting of >13,000 images. We also validated the application of the dataset by training and evaluating an artificial neural network with the dataset. The results indicated that the keypoint estimation performance of the trained network was close to that of a human-level. The dataset will be instrumental to train/test the neural networks for markerless motion capture of the macaques and developments of the algorithms for the networks, contributing establishment of an innovative platform for behavior analysis for non-human primates for neuroscience and medicine, as well as other fields using macaques as a model organism.

To understand the biology of health, and how molecular dysfunction leads to disease, knowledge of the human cell is essential. The protein is the core unit of the human body made from trillions of cells, forming the body's various tissues. These tissues come together to create human organs. It is essential to understand the Spatio-temporal distribution of proteins in cells and to investigate human RNA-sequencing for human genes characterization. For this, it requires a massive amount of annotated data. However, due to many considerations like the high cost of data sample collection, lack of data sample availability, and lawful clauses for patient privacy, the majority of medical data is out of reach for general public research. In this study, we propose a new dual deep generative method for synthesizing human cell protein images by using the Generative Adversarial Network technique. Specifically, for that, we pair original cell protein images with their respective Cell-protein-tree. These pairs are then used to learn the mapping from a binary cell protein to a new cell protein image. For this purpose, we use an image-to-image translation technique based on adversarial learning. The generated cell protein images are expected to preserve the structural and visual quality of the training images. Visual and quantitative analysis of the experimental results demonstrates that the synthesized data are preserving the desired quality while maintaining the different forms of original data. Contribution-We have proposed a new dual deep generative model for synthesizing cell protein data.

The evaluation of markerless pose estimation performed by OpenPose has been getting much attention from researchers of human movement studies. This work aims to evaluate and compare the output joint positions estimated by the OpenPose with a marker-based motion-capture data recorded on a pop dance motion. Although the marker-based motion capture can accurately measure and record the human joint positions, this particular set-up is expensive. The framework to compare the outputs of the markerless method to the ground truth marker-based joint remains unknown, especially for complex body motion. Synchronization, camera calibration, and 3D reconstruction by fusing the outputs of the markerless method (OpenPose) are discussed. In this case study, the comparison results illustrate that the mean absolute errors for each key points are less than 700 mm. Contribution: This work contributes for human movement science by evaluating the OpenPose markerless 3D reconstruction pose with the marker-based motion-capture data recorded on pop dance motion.

<p>We have been developing the "Smart Workcell," which supports the elderly and disabled in the high-mix, low-volume production of products and self-help devices. This study installed an electric wheelchair in a Smart Workcell and proposed a velocity-based head gesture control system that uses the face orientation acquired by a depth sensor to allow the user to change the chair posture in an ambient manner. Finally, the proposed system's effectiveness is verified by experiments, and prospects, such as speech recognition methods as a human interface for electric wheelchair are also discussed.</p>

Reflectance photoplethysmography is a widely employed method in personal health assessment devices. We developed a remote PPG system for obtaining the signal from palm skin. For the handle-mounted design, it is crucial to ensure accurate measurements under a range of skin temperatures. Under lower temperatures, green PPG was proven to provide superior signal quality in comparison to infrared PPG. However, since hemoglobin has maximum absorption in both green and blue parts of the spectrum, to ensure a stable performance of handle-mounted PPG system under different temperature conditions, it is worth exploring the PPG signal in both wavelengths. In our PPG system, TCS3472 Color Sensor was chosen as a photodetector. In distinction from video cameras with Bayer pattern, the TCS3472 has an equal number of R, G, and B sensing elements, thereby allowing the comparison of these wavelengths performance. Using the developed system, we compared green and blue PPG signals from six subjects in terms of amplitude and accuracy of heartbeat intervals estimation under two temperature conditions. According to our preliminary results, the performance of blue PPG was comparable to green PPG under both temperature conditions, suggesting further investigation with our system is worth conducting.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common progressive neu-rodegenerative disease that affects a wide range of motor and non-motor symptoms. Freezing of gait (FOG) is such a motor symptom of PD that frequently results in falling, and almost half of PD patients suffer from FOG. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of a robotic assistance system called UPS-PD, which was developed to suppress FOG. The double limb support phase (DLS) in a 10-m straight-line walking task, the gait time and step counts were measured in five PD subjects. In addition, the safety of the UPS-PD in a healthy person was investigated using OpenSim, and the DLS parameters in four healthy elderly subjects were evaluated. In the experiment with the PD patients, the DLS parameters of two subjects showed an improvement. Furthermore, the step length of one subject and the step length and walking speed of the other subject were improved. Moreover, there were no problems in terms of instability of gait in both the PD patients. The UPS-PD did not adversely affect the gait of healthy elderly subjects and the walking of a healthy subject model in the simulation. Therefore, the UPS-PD is considered to be a useful device for im-proving walking in PD patients.

This paper presents the fabrication, electromechanical modelling and testing of a highly stretchable textile-dielectric elastomer capacitive sensor for capturing motion. The proposed sensor is made of conductive fabric as electrode and ultra-Thin dielectric elastomer film as dielectric. This type of capacitive sensor exhibits high linearity and sensitivity as compare to available commercial sensors. By using basic calibration technique integrated with microelectronics, such sensors can easily capture motion and can also be paired with a mobile application, which is capable of visualizing the recorded 3D movement in real time domain, has the potential to be used in wearables.

Objective: Proportional and simultaneous est-imation of finger kinematics from surface EMG based on the assumption that there exists a correlation between muscle activations and finger kinematics in low dimensional space. Methods: We employ Manifold Relevance Determination (MRD), a multi-view learning model with a nonparametric Bayesian approach, to extract the nonlinear muscle and kinematics synergies and the relationship between them by studying muscle activations (input-space) together with the finger kinematics (output-space). Results: This study finds that there exist muscle synergies which are associated with kinematic synergies. The acquired nonlinear synergies and the association between them has further been utilized for the estimation of finger kinematics from muscle activation inputs, and the proposed approach has outperformed other commonly used linear and nonlinear regression approaches with an average correlation coefficient of $0.91\pm 0.03$. Conclusion: There exists an association between muscle and kinematic synergies which can be used for the proportional and simultaneous estimation of finger kinematics from the muscle activation inputs. Significance: The findings of this study not only presents a viable approach for accurate and intuitive myoelectric control but also provides a new perspective on the muscle synergies in the motor control community.

The recent demographic trend across developed nations shows a dramatic increase in the aging population, fallen fertility rates and a shortage of caregivers. Robotic solutions to clothing assistance can significantly improve the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) for the elderly and disabled. We have developed a clothing assistance robot using dual arms and conducted many successful demonstrations with healthy people. It was, however, impossible to systematically evaluate its performance because human arms are not visible due to occlusion from a shirt and robot during dressing. To address this problem, we propose to use another robot, Whole-Body Robotic Simulator of the Elderly that can mimic the posture and movement of the elderly persons during the dressing task. The dressing task is accomplished by utilizing Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) wherein the control points of DMP are determined by applying forward kinematics on the robotic simulator. The experimental results show the plausibility of our approach.

The analysis and understanding of primate behavior play a fundamental role in fields such as neuroscience, medicine, psychology, genetics, and more. This paper demonstrates an automatic detection of primate features by using an open-source deep learning toolset, DeepLabCut. We trained the deep neural network to locate 17 features and extract the monkey pose by relating the set of features detected. The model is trained with 5,967 manually annotated monkey images, which achieved train and test set errors of 3.61 and 19.72 unit pixels respectively. We also plotted the feature trajectories across multiple frames to show that the trained model can be used for analyzing behavior.

How does the Central Nervous System (CNS) controls a group of muscles is an important question in the field of motor control. A common conception is developed over the years that the CNS make use of predefined activation patterns, known as muscle synergies during task execution. These muscle synergies are extracted by applying any of the factorization algorithms such as Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NNMF), Independent Component Analysis (ICA) or Principle Component Analysis (PCA) on a concatenated surface EMG data set recorded from the target muscles. However, the step to concatenate sEMG signals before they are given as input to these linear algorithm is crucial as the synergistic structure changes significantly based on the number and choice of muscles considered during concatenation step. To address this problem, we propose a new approach of extracting muscle synergies by treating sEMG signals from each muscle as an individual modality and then learning the synergistic structure among them if it exists using multi-view learning. In this study, we propose to use Manifold Relevance Determination (MRD) to find nonlinear synergies from sEMG by assuming the sEMG of a muscle as an individual modality. Results have shown that synergistic patterns extracted using our approach are consistent upon addition of sEMG signals from new muscles.

Hence, the demand for service robots to assist with dressing which is an essential Activity of Daily Living (ADL) is increasing rapidly. Robotic Clothing Assistance is a challenging task since the robot has to deal with two demanding tasks simultaneously, (a) non-rigid and highly flexible cloth manipulation and (b) safe human–robot interaction while assisting humans whose posture may vary during the task. On the other hand, humans can deal with these tasks rather easily. In this paper, we propose a framework for robotic clothing assistance by imitation learning from a human demonstration to a compliant dual-arm robot. In this framework, we divide the dressing task into three phases, i.e. reaching phase, arm dressing phase, and body dressing phase. We model the arm dressing phase as a global trajectory modification using Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP), while we model the body dressing phase toward a local trajectory modification applying Bayesian Gaussian Process Latent Variable Model (BGPLVM). We show that the proposed framework developed towards assisting the elderly is generalizable to various people and successfully performs a sleeveless shirt dressing task. We also present participants feedback on public demonstration at the International Robot Exhibition (iREX) 2017. To our knowledge, this is the first work performing a full dressing of a sleeveless shirt on a human subject with a humanoid robot.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common progressive neurodegenerative disease. It can manifest with a wide range of motor and non-motor signs. Among the most disabling PD symptoms are gait impairments and freezing of gait (FOG). External cueing is currently accepted as an effective strategy to improve gait parameters and overcome FOG. However, some patients show a weak response to external cues or even the worsening of gait under cueing condition. In this paper we propose a new walking assist robotic system UPS-PD, which employs pneumatically-actuated artificial muscle and simple control system. The working principle of UPS-PD is based on inducing spontaneous synchronization in PD patients. That allows them to maintain a stable gait pattern while walking at their own pace. UPS-PD was tested in two PD patients and in one of them a significant improvement of gait features was demonstrated. Our results suggest that UPS-PD might improve walking performance in PD patients with highly variable and asymmetric gait patterns.

Motor-skill learning for complex robotic tasks is a challenging problem due to the high task variability. Robotic clothing assistance is one such challenging problem that can greatly improve the quality-of-life for the elderly and disabled. In this study, we propose a data-efficient representation to encode task-specific motor-skills of the robot using Bayesian nonparametric latent variable models. The effectivity of the proposed motor-skill representation is demonstrated in two ways: (1) through a real-time controller that can be used as a tool for learning from demonstration to impart novel skills to the robot and (2) by demonstrating that policy search reinforcement learning in such a task-specific latent space outperforms learning in the high-dimensional joint configuration space of the robot. We implement our proposed framework in a practical setting with a dual-arm robot performing clothing assistance tasks.

Robotic manipulation of deformable objects such as the garments is a challenging task because of its non-linear dynamics and a high degree of freedom. In general, it is quite difficult to model cloth state. But the Robotic handling of garments is necessary for assistive tasks like Robotic Clothing Assistance. In this paper, we are trying to automate the garment manipulation process by the robot. In our framework, the robot recognizes the garment it is handling, find appropriate grasping points on the garment and brings the garment in a particular state so that the clothing assistance task can start. In this research, we are investigating the applicability of Deep Learning framework for garment recognition and grasping point detection. We have used Real Garment Dataset generated using Kinect sensor and two types of Synthetic Garment Datasets generated using physics simulator Maya. Convolutional Neural Networks are trained using these datasets to predict the class of the garment and the spatial coordinates of the grasping points. The framework was tested using real garments and it shows promising results in the detection of the type of cloth and grasping points.

Among washing automation, the accuracy of clothing identification images obtained from a robot camera greatly influences on the subsequent operation of clothes. We perform instance segmentation of images containing multiple clothes by Mask R - CNN which is a latest Deep Learning method. We also define the extent of overlapping of clothes as complexity and evaluate the degree to which accuracy is related to complexity.</p>

In this paper, we propose a method for automatically estimating important points of large sensor data by collecting attention points of the user when visualized, and applying a supervised machine-learning algorithm. For large-scale sensor data, it is difficult to find important points simply through visualization, because such points are buried in a large scope of visualization. We also provide the results of an estimation, the accuracy of which was over 80% for multiple visualizations. In addition, the method has the advantage that the trained model can be reused to any other visualization from the same type of the sensors. We show the results of such reusability for the new type of visualization, which achieved an accuracy rate of 70–80%.

© 2017 IEEE. As the robot technology is advancing, it is possible to use robots for basic day-to-day chores, so that the burden can be taken off from humans. To make the robots perform such tasks, it is necessary for them to handle different types of objects. Manipulation of deformable objects such as cloth is a challenging task for a robot because of high dimensionality and large number of possible configurations of cloth. Previous studies have covered large number of simple manipulations of cloth articles. In this paper, we are focusing on table setting task that requires putting on a sheet of cloth on the table. This paper proposes human-robot collaboration for table-setting task based on visual assessment. We used Baxter robot to hold two corners of rectangular tablecloth and other two corners are held by human. A head-mounted Kinect sensor is used to get the state of cloth and Robot arms are used for controlling the position of cloth corners. We use features from Kinect sensor to assess whether the placement of the cloth is successful or not. We demonstrate an initial study of the system that can achieve promising results towards table setting task through human-robot interaction.

<p>Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disease, and one of its major symptoms, freezing of gait(FOG) during walking, leads to difficulty walking and induction of falls, greatly reducing patient's QOL. Meanwhile, it is known that FOG do not easily occur during pedaling. Therefore, in this study, we developed a system for applying unplugged powered suit, to Parkinson's disease patients, that is designed to give somatosensory and motor stimulation using artificial muscles to swing leg, based on the movement of supporting legs during bipedal walking.</p>

<p>Various myoelectric prosthetic hands have been proposed as a substitute for the hands of those who lost their hands due to disasters and traffic accidents. Most of the prosthetic hands using surface sEMG employ a few electrodes and enable only full-open and close functions. To realize multi-fingered and natural motion with an easy calibration of a low-cost sEMG device, we previously developed a system that can generate multi-fingered and natural motion using a 2D latent-space of the multi-fingered and natural motion acquired by GPLVM, and showed our subjects were able to adapt to the system when the latent-space was visible. In this study, we further examine if subjects can adapt to the system when the latent-space is invisible. Experimental results demonstrate their adaptivity.</p>

Redundancy in motion, and synergy in neuromuscular coordination provides significant versatility to the human fingers while performing coordinated grasping and manipulation tasks in several ways. This paper explores how humans may resolve the redundancy in their thumb, index and middle fingers when these digits flex to cooperatively translate a small object toward the palm. It is observed that humans actively employ a secondary subtask of maximizing instantaneous manipulability that helps determine all intermediate finger configurations when performing the primary subtask of following a tip trajectory. This behavior is accurately captured by an inverse kinematic model based on a redundancy parameter. The joint angles get determined unambiguously though the redundancy parameter is shown to depend on the instantaneous finger configurations and also, to attain negative values. Further, this parameter is noted to vary significantly across subjects performing the same kinematic task. The findings, that are based on the experimental finger motion data garnered from 12 subjects, are reckoned to be of significant importance, especially in reference to the challenges in design and control of finger exoskeletons for cooperative manipulation.

In this study, we are investigating the applicability of using Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) as a task parameterization model for performing clothing assistance task. Robotic cloth manipulation task deals with pu.ing a clothing article on both the arms. Robot trajectory varies signi€cantly for various postures and also there can be various failure scenarios while doing cooperative manipulation with nonrigid and highly deformable clothing article. We have performed experiments on so. mannequin instead of human. Result shows that DMPs are able to generalize movement trajectory for modiFIed posture.

Robotic solutions to clothing assistance can significantly improve quality of life for the elderly and disabled. Real-Time estimation of the human-cloth relationship is crucial for efficient learning of motor skills for robotic clothing assistance. The major challenge involved is cloth-state estimation due to inherent nonrigidity and occlusion. In this study, we present a novel framework for real-Time estimation of the cloth state using a low-cost depth sensor, making it suitable for a feasible social implementation. The framework relies on the hypothesis that clothing articles are constrained to a low-dimensional latent manifold during clothing tasks. We propose the use of manifold relevance determination (MRD) to learn an offline cloth model that can be used to perform informed cloth-state estimation in real time. The cloth model is trained using observations from a motion capture system and depth sensor. MRD provides a principled probabilistic framework for inferring the accurate motion-capture state when only the noisy depth sensor feature state is available in real time. The experimental results demonstrate that our framework is capable of learning consistent task-specific latent features using few data samples and has the ability to generalize to unseen environmental settings. We further present several factors that affect the predictive performance of the learned cloth-state model.

<p>高齢化の進展により介護現場での人材不足が懸念される中，介護予防（要介護者の増加の抑制）や要介護者の生活支援サービスなどの分野ではロボット技術の活用が喫緊の課題となっており，国主導での研究開発が盛んに進められてきた。しかし，ロボット技術の社会実装にあたっては，安全性，コストとともに，要介護者一人ひとり異なる認知能力や身体的特性にどのように適応させるかが大きな課題となっている。本稿では，ロボット介護機器やITによる介護支援や介護予防サービスの現状を概観するとともに，筆者の研究グループによる低コストな装置（KinectやWii Balance Board）を応用した姿勢維持のリハビリテーション支援や，強化学習理論を応用した着衣介助ロボットおよびダーツ投てき運動学習支援の研究を取り上げ，現状の課題および今後の見通しを示す。</p>

© 2015 Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association.Aiming at in-home rehabilitation and continuous monitoring of elderly people and patients in balance disorders, we developed a low-cost and compact system monitoring motion and center of pressure (COP) using Microsoft Kinect and Wii Balance Board. The motion tracking accuracy of the developed system was evaluated in COP tracking tasks proposed for assessing balancing ability. The results showed the existence of biases (discrepancies) between the actual motion and measured by the developed system, but the standard deviations were very small, indicating that, the system has small tracking error if the motion is appropriately calibrated.

Copyright 2015 ACM.Map generation of mobile robots over long periods of working suffers from inconsistencies because of gradually changes in the environment. These changes further cause hindrances in autonomous navigation of mobile robots. This paper presents a novel method to infer such gradual changes and incorporate them in map generation. We model the environment using an occupancy grid structure with the state of each grid cell is determined in an online fashion using an Explicit-state-Duration Hidden Markov Model (EDHMM). Our work presents filtering of occupancy grid into dynamic and static. We tested our method in simulation as well as on a real world dataset. Our results show robust detection of dynamic changes in the grid map, even in the presence of occlusion.

The proposed robot recommendation system is able to make recommendations based on the real-time estimation of the shopper's choice. Our system estimates shoppers' attentions using only head movements The first experiment validated the capability of our intention estimator in a kiosk-shop scenario. In the second experiment, a Humanoid robot intervened in the decision process. As a result, we found that our system significantly changed the shoppers' choices in the two-alternative-forced-choice literature.

Artists have a specific evaluation of abstract paintings while art novices do that with difficulty. This difference is shown in eye fixation patterns, although the cause is not clear. To explain the difference in fixation patterns, we used one of the saliency maps of paintings which predict fixations well without prior knowledge such as a meaningful target. If artists had a deep knowledge of art, they attend less to the salient features than novices in observing abstract paintings. On the other hand, the fixation patterns possibly vary in visual tasks. Therefore we examined the effect of salient features in two tasks: free viewing and preference judgment. To evaluate this quantitatively, the correlation coefficient (CC) between fixation distribution and a saliency map was used. The CCs were compared between artists and novices for each task. We found that the CCs of artists were lower than those of novices in the free viewing task, but not in the preference judgment task. This implies that the artist's knowledge of observation paintings was appeared only in free viewing. © 2013 APSIPA.

Prediction of driving behaviors is important problem in developing the next-generation driving support system. In order to take account of diverse driving situations, it is necessary to deal with multiple time series data considering commonalities and differences among them. In this study we utilize the beta process autoregressive hidden Markov model (BP-AR-HMM) that can model multiple time series considering common and different features among them using the beta process as a prior distribution. We apply BP-AR-HMM to actual driving operation data to estimate vector-autoregressive process parameters that represent the segmental driving behaviors, and with the estimated parameters we predict the driving behaviors of unknown test data. Prediction accuracy of test data using BP-AR-HMM is compared with that of using classical HMM. The results suggest that it is possible to identify the dynamical behaviors of driving operations using BP-AR-HMM, and with BP-AR-HMM we can predict driving behaviors better in actual environment than with HMM. © 2013 EURASIP.

Prediction of dynamic hand finger movements has many clinical and engineering applications in the control of human interface devices such as those used in virtual reality control, robot prosthesis and rehabilitation aids. Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals have often been used in the mentioned applications because these reflect the motor intention of users very well. In this study, we present a method to estimate the finger joint angles of a hand from sEMG signals that considers electromechanical delay (EMD), which is inherent when EMG signals are captured alongside motion data. We use the muscle activation obtained from the sEMG signals as input to a neural network. In this muscle activation model, the EMD is parameterized and automatically obtained through optimization. With this method, we can predict the finger joint angles with sEMG signals in both periodic and nonperiodic free movements of the flexion and extension movement of the fingers. Our results show correlation as high as 0.92 between the actual and predicted metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint angles for periodic finger flexion movements, and as high as 0.85 for nonperiodic movements, which are more dynamic and natural.

Acquiring the skillful movements of experts is a difficult task in many fields. If we find quantitative indices of skillful movement, we can develop an adaptive training system using the indices. We focused on throwing darts in our previous study. It was found that optimization criteria of sum of squared joint torque changes over time was negatively correlated with subject's scores, suggesting that the experts optimally controlled the shoulder elevations and rotation around the elbow joint in terms of dynamics. In this study, we investigate the relationship between the skill level of subjects and their utilization joint torque components such as the muscular torque, interaction torque and gravity torque. It is shown found that the sum of squared joint torque components of the subjects correlates with their scores, suggesting that the subjects who can take higher scores utilize the interaction torque of the elbow joint without shoulder displacement.

This study proposes a risk criterion for rear-end collision warning systems. A warning system evaluates a driver's risk and gives an alert when the risk exceeds a threshold, where the risk criterion employed is crucial. Our previous studies have shown the effectiveness of the 2nd-order time-to-collision (TTC) that assumes a constant acceleration motion for vehicles and calculate the time until a collision. However, the criterion considers such a case to be safe that a driver follows the preceding vehicle at a constant distance, no matter how small it is. Obviously, this does not agree to a driver's feeling of risks. To take this issue into account, we make an assumption that a driver always expects the preceding vehicle's sudden brake and propose the brake-assumed 2nd-order TTC, which is the 2nd-order TTC when the preceding vehicle decelerates with fixed brake strength. This idea is simple but difficult to determine the parameters, especially the brake strength. We propose two methods for estimating a driver's imaginary deceleration. One is called the CV minimizer and the other is called the transferred deceleration. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the methods, we apply the methods to the driving data collected originally under unconstrained conditions. In the experiments they show almost the same results where the criterion explains the brake use as well as the throttle use. © 2010 SICE.

The paper proposes a rear-end collision warning system for drivers, where how to evaluate the risk of collision is critical. In the proposed system, the time-to-collision assuming a constant relative acceleration is employed as a subjective index of risk based on the collected data in an unconstrained drive and the discussion from a theory of visual control. The system produces an alert when it detects anomaly of the index using the one-class support vector machine, which is trained with the aforementioned data. Some cross-validation experiments show the effectiveness of the system. © 2009 IEEE.

Although there have been much research on robot walking, the energy efficiency of central pattern generator (CPG)-based walking has not received much attention. This study proposes a novel method for acquiring energy-efficient CPG-based bipedal walking for a robot with knees and feet. In this method, we introduce a torque-free period for swing leg control into the swing leg control cycle. During this period, no torque is applied to the hip joint controller, and therefore no energy is consumed. When and for how long the torque-free period is inserted into the swing leg control cycle is adaptively acquired by reinforcement learning. Simulation experiments demonstrate the feasibility of our method. The energy consumed in acquiring walking is reduced by 40% compared with simple CPG-based walking without the torque-free period in the practical learning speed. Walking stability is maintained with respect to external disturbances on a level floor. Although the method is more unstable on slopes with the torque-free period, the torque-free-period can be adaptively eliminated to achieve stable walking on the slopes. © 2009 IEEE.

In smooth-pursuit eye movements (SPEM) with gain close to one, SPEM should be controlled mainly by prediction of target motion because retinal slip is nearly zero. We investigated the neural mechanisms of visual-target prediction by the three fMRI experiments. (1) Overt pursuit task: subjects pursued a sinusoidally moving target which blinked (blink condition) or did not blink (continuous condition). (2) Covert pursuit task: subjects covertly pursued the same target with eyes gazed at fixation point. (3) Attend-to-stationary target task: subjects brought attention on a stationary target with eyes gazed at fixation point. In the overt pursuit task, the SPEM gain and the delay in the blink condition were not very different from the continuous condition, indicating good prediction of the blinking target motion. Activities in the dorsolateral prefrontal, precentral, medial superior frontal, intraparietal, and lateral occipito-temporal cortexes increased in the blink-continuous subtraction. The V1 activity decreased for this contrast. In the covert pursuit task, only the anterior/superior LOTC activity remained in the blink-continuous subtraction. In the attend-to-stationary target task, the blink-continuous subtraction elicited no activation. Consequently, the a/sLOTC activity is responsible for target prediction rather than motor commands for eye movements or just target blinking such as visual saliency. © 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd and the Japan Neuroscience Society. While the predictive nature of the primate smooth pursuit system has been evident through several behavioural and neurophysiological experiments, few models have attempted to explain these results comprehensively. The model we propose in this paper in line with previous models employing optimal control theory; however, we hypothesize two new issues: (1) the medical superior temporal (MST) area in the cerebral cortex implements a recurrent neural network (RNN) in order to predict the current or future target velocity, and (2) a forward model of the target motion is acquired by on-line learning. We use stimulation studies to demonstrate how our new model supports these hypotheses. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Prediction of driving behaviors is important problem in developing the next-generation driving support system. In order to take account of diverse driving situations, it is necessary to deal with multiple time series data considering commonalities and differences among them. In this paper we utilize the beta process autoregressive hidden Markov model (BP-AR-HMM) that can model multiple time series considering common and different features among them using the beta process as a prior distribution. We apply the BP-AR-HMM to actual driving behavior data to estimate VAR process parameters that represent the driving behaviors, and with the estimated parameters we predict the driving behaviors of unknown test data. The results suggest that it is possible to identify the dynamical behaviors of driving operations using BP-AR-HMM, and to predict driving behaviors in actual environment. © 2013 IEEE.
