    This study suggests using electronic portfolios (eportfolios) as a multimodal project-based writing assignment in English language courses to help identify the challenges English writing instructors face in Japan. The assignment design proposed here is sequenced with a series of scaffolding tasks to help students develop an electronic eportfolio, which will in turn help to bring about students' self-directed and collaborative learning through reflection on their learning processeS. Such an eportfolio would enable students to demonstrate to an audience outside of the university their development as a writer by showcasing thoughtful reflection and relevant artifacts, including multimedia forms in both visual and musical formatS. Importantly, this writing assignment model is designed to deepen students' understanding of "rhetorical situation", a key writing concept, as well as to help transfer such conceptual knowledge to different types of situations writing students will engage in during college and beyond.

    近年、Google TranslateやDeepLなどの無料機械翻訳アプリケーションの翻訳精度は、格段に向上している。それに呼応して、日本語の原稿を機械翻訳アプリケーションで英語に訳出したように見受けられる学生の課題が増えている、という指摘が少なくないことから（Mori, Johnston, & Satake, 2016, 小田, 2021)、機械翻訳は英語学習者の間に広く浸透していると考えられる。機械翻訳は間違いを減らし、語彙表現や文構造を多彩にしてくれる利点がある。しかし、日本語と英語の言語構造の違いのため機械翻訳で処理できない部分があることを知らずに、学習者が機械翻訳の誤った訳出をそのまま使ってしまっていることは少なくない。使い方を誤ると、学習者の学びを疎外したり、学術的な不正行為に関わる問題となったりする可能性もある。学習者には、学術研究倫理に則った効果的な機械翻訳の使い方を指導することが望まれる。本発表では、機械翻訳とライティング指導について、日本語で書かれた文献を中心に、明らかにされた知見と議論をレビューし、学習者が既に日常的に機械翻訳を使用していることを前提としたライティング指導のあり方について考察する。

    Drawing on an ethnographic case study on Japanese high school English education policy, this paper examines institutional practice and discourse to address factors intervening in its implementation. The analysis reveals how the conflation of neoliberalism and nationalism connoted in the policy has emerged in language teaching practice in a suburban school.
