Because of its communication volume constraints, scientific observations by nanosatellites need to reduce downlink data by onboard data preprocessing. Therefore, we tried to classify time series data of the geomagnetic field obtained by the SWARM satellite to determine the most appropriate method for onboard classification of a phenomenon in the geomagnetic field. The classifications have been executed using rule-based, K-means, and combined CNN methods. The experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the machine-learning model with LSTM networks.

This paper reports the activities resulting from satellite communication lectures conducted by the KOSEN space group in January and August of 2018. Since 2014 the KOSEN space group has been developing two CubeSats to educate students and to complete scientific missions. Consequently, the aim of our lectures is to enable KOSEN students to monitor and operate the CubeSats by satellite communication. In the January lecture, students learned satellite communication theories, and practical training on the assembly and operation of simple receivers. In August, the students learned the theories of digital satellite communication and participated in advanced training using the simple receivers. A survey indicated the participants are interested in receiving signals from a real satellite in space, using the simple self-assembled receivers.

This paper describes the “2017 and 2018 KOSEN Space Camps.” These camps offer introductory space technology programs for students enrolled in the various KOSEN technology colleges in Japan. Since 2015, we have hosted this camp at the Marine Park Niihama. Over the last two years, we evolved and refined the camp's contents to develop a more effective space technology and science education program. In 2017, we successfully held two CanSat development courses: One for beginners to learn how to use onboard computers and sensors and one that is driven more by the participants' imaginations. We tried to make our camps stand out in terms of content variations and load balances including competition. In 2018, we attempted to introduce advanced content such as model CubeSat development and competition. This new trial included online preparation materials from KOSEN's space academia. We will continue to improve the Space Camp content so that in the future, this program may be established as an annual space event in Niihama City.

We report the development of a model CubeSat for satellite communication education. The communication between satellites and ground stations is an essential part of satellite operations. As a critical part of the satellite systems, we focused on satellite communication to train the student so that they can develop and operate the CubeSats. The model CubeSat is equipped with fundamental components, such as an onboard computer, sensors, communication, and power supply, which are necessary for satellites. The software programs in the model CubeSat provide two functions: controlling and monitoring satellites, and transmission of telemetry and image data. The students can study the communication equipment and operations of satellite communication using our model CubeSat.

Currently, 10 National Institutes of Technology (KOSEN) are collaborating to develop a 2U CubeSat. This study aims to develop a CubeSat ground model that allows KOSEN students who wish to participate to learn CubeSat. The CubeSat ground model is a standard 10cm×10cm×20cm (2U) CubeSat size. Furthermore, it consists of a similar subsystem as the actual CubeSat, enabling semi-autonomous operation by OBC, charging and feeding by solar cells, and data transmission by wireless devices. Moreover, a structure system with a space where mission equipment can be installed will be designed, so that students can deepen their understanding of the satellite mission. These plans will be used in the model CubeSat production course at the KOSEN Space Camp 2019. This paper describes features of the developed model CubeSat and introduces the model CubeSat production course.

We report on a practical example of an online engineering-related manufacturing course: a production course for CanSat, an extremely small satellite model. Conducting online manufacturing courses is an effective tool for technical education. To spread space technology education nationwide, CanSat courses are held via online conferences. For students, the kit and the fabrication manual for the CanSat course were improved; in addition, the work procedure manual and documentation for instructors were enhanced. For this course, students experienced preparing the educational kits and teaching the CanSat course themselves, practicing for the course through product preparation. In this paper, we summarize the results of the CanSat course from preparation to implementation, and propose improvements for future courses.

For space technology education, we developed a CubeSat ground model and used it in a production course for students at the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN). The Model CubeSat is designed to make it easier for high-school students to assemble all constituent parts and customize the model. Considering the flexibility to adjust the contents for competitions, the Model CubeSat has a size of about 13 cm cube, is an autonomous device with solar panels, rechargeable batteries, and has long distance wireless communication tools from ZigBee. In this paper, we explain the development of the CubeSat ground model and report the results of its production course.

This report examines a practical example of an online engineering production course for students. Typically, production courses in fields such as manufacturing provide students with hands on training in a laboratory setting. While it is now possible to conduct lectures and meetings online, this is not yet the case with production courses. To fill this gap, we conducted an online CanSat pico-satellite manufacturing course in the field of space personnel training. We then examined the possibility and effectiveness of future refinements for similar online production courses, based on participant responses to questionnaires about problems peculiar to remote production courses.

Disturbances in space environment around the Earth (Geospace disturbances), which are driven by the solar activities, are causes of spacecraft anomalies, radiation hazards of astronauts and aircrews on polar route, problem of navigations and HF communications, and induction current in long-line power cables. To mitigate the risk of geospace disturbances, improvement of operational space weather forecast with high precision based on numerical forecast scheme would be important. However, the poor observation points in geospace prevent us to introduce numerical forecast scheme with data assimilation technique which was common in terrestrial weather forecast. To breakthrough this situation, we are planning to develop a space environment sensor package, which can contribute to safety operation of the micro satellite itself, and to realize low-cost global monitoring of space environment based on constellation of micro satellites. Space weather observations by several tens of micro satellite constellation enables us to narrow down the sensor performance of single satellite. The optimization strategy of sensor performance for further miniaturization and power saving can accelerate mountability of the package. Based on this approach, it is expected that numerical forecast scheme with data assimilation technique will be introduced for operational space weather forecast in the future.

Myanmar is the largest country by geographical area in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Its history and culture are greatly influenced by its neighbors - India and China - which represent two of the world's great civilizations and also two of the world's most populous nations. Its geographic location at the intersection of China and India makes it well positioned to resume its traditional role as a regional trading hub and a key supplier of minerals, natural gas, and agricultural products. Myanmar is currently in a transition from a centrally directed economy to a market-oriented economy, and from 60 years of conflict to peace in its border areas. In this report, we outlines current situation of, and issues within Myanmar and it's Engineering education.

6th Spacecraft Enivironment Symposium (February 29-30, 2009. Kitakyushu International Conference Center)It is important for spacecraft operation to make a forecast of high-energy electron flux at geosynchronous orbit. Because enhancement of high-energy electron flux often causes deep electrical charging. This study to predict a critical enhancement of high-energy electron flux at geosynchronous orbit using the neural network. The program of neural network is tested using the several kinds of input data and various numbers of middle layers. As a result, the prediction efficiency is improved by combining solar wind data and ground magnetic data as input data compared to that by only solar wind data or ground magnetic data. This result indicates that combining solar wind data and ground magnetic data is effective for improvement of the predictive efficiency.Physical characteristics: Original contains color illustrations

Students in an advanced course are required to pass a bachelor's-degree-examination by National Institute for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation to be conferred a bachelor's degree. One and two applications from the students of Tokuyama College of Technology were rejected by the examination in 2005 and 2006, respectively, despite a careful measure by many staffs. In order to investigate a current condition of the bachelor's-degree-examination, we sent questionnaires about number of rejected student and reason for a reject to all the national college of technology and obtained 48 responses. The result suggests that the most of colleges are confused by the rejection and seeking an effective action to improve the ratio of successful applicants.

It is important for spacecraft operations to make a forecast of high-energy electron flux. Because enhancement of high-energy electron causes deep electrical charging. It is known that variation of high-energy electron flux has a good correlation with solar wind speed and north-south component of interplanetary magnetic field. Here we report the result of study on forecast of high-energy electron flux using neural network with solar wind parameters as its inputs.
