Frame semantics has developed a relatively robust way of describing meanings in terms of frames evoked by lexical units and grammatical constructions (Fillmore, 1982; Fillmore & Baker, 2010). Less attention, however, has been paid to how cognitive frames should be represented when metaphorical interpretation involves a mapping between a source domain and a target domain. This issue becomes especially visible in evaluative metaphor, where source- domain structure alone does not determine either polarity or the specific construal of metaphorical meaning. This paper uses taste adjectives in English and Japanese as a test case for investigating the boundary between linguistic and cognitive frames.
The paper addresses three questions. First, how far can metaphorical meaning be accounted for by the frame structures of the source and target domains? Second, what kinds of cognitive-frame specifications are needed to license or constrain the mapping between them? Third, at what level of granularity should such specifications be represented so that they remain both descriptively adequate and computationally manageable?
The study focuses on figurative uses of sweet, bitter, amai ‘sweet’, and nigai ‘bitter’. These items are especially revealing because they show both cross-linguistic convergence and striking asymmetry. While bitter and nigai tend to converge in expressions such as bitter experience and nigai keiken ‘bitter experience’, the metaphorical range of sweet and amai is less straightforward. A telling contrast is found in ‘sweet face’ and Japanese amai kao (lit. ‘sweet face’), especially in the expression amai kao o suru (lit. ‘to make/show a sweet face’). In English, ‘sweet face’ typically maps sweetness onto a target domain involving pleasant appearance, positive affect, or interpersonal attractiveness. In Japanese, by contrast, amai kao in amai kao o suru tends to evoke a target domain involving indulgence, leniency, or insufficient strictness toward another person. This contrast suggests that metaphorical interpretation cannot be derived from the source domain of sweetness alone. Rather, it depends on cognitive-frame specifications that regulate the mapping, including conventional evaluative tendencies and perspective-sensitive conditions. In English, sweetness is stabilized as a positive value; in Japanese, however, further specification is necessary, since sweetness may be construed positively or negatively depending on whether attractiveness or indulgent softness is foregrounded.
Methodologically, the paper combines corpus analysis with AI-assisted probing. The Japanese data draw on an existing dataset of attributive uses of amai and nigai (Sakaguchi, 2022), obtained by listing noun collocates in A+N patterns and manually identifying metaphorical uses; this dataset includes 1,899 instances of amai (269 metaphorical) and 484 instances of nigai (65 metaphorical). Each example is annotated for (i) the frame structure of the source domain, (ii) the frame structure of the target domain, and (iii) the minimally necessary cognitive-frame specifications required to license the mapping. The AI-assisted component uses a large language model under incrementally enriched prompting conditions. Model outputs are compared with manual analysis to identify which aspects of figurative interpretation remain unstable unless such specifications are explicitly provided. The paper argues that cognitive frames should be modelled not merely as background knowledge, but as structured constraints on source-target mappings in metaphorical interpretation (Lakoff & Johnson,1980; Sullivan, 2013).
