The effects of thermal conductivity, heat capacity, thermal inertia, and slide-roll ratio (SRR) on point elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) are discussed with engineering ceramics and steel by a non-Newtonian thermal EHL analysis. When the thermal conductivities of contacting materials are significantly different, the film thickness is greatly affected by which material has the higher velocity. However, the film thickness is dominated by the heat capacity when the difference in thermal conductivity is not large. In contact of materials with the same mechanical and thermal properties, the film thickness and friction coefficient are influenced by the thermal inertia.

This paper provides the main causes of asymmetric or directional deformation of surface roughness based on a transient non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model, where the contact materials have different thermal conductivities and elastic moduli. In order to obtain the actual shape of the surface asperity, the surface shapes of contact bodies are evaluated separately. It is clarified that the asymmetric deformation of the asperities appears due to two causes. One depends on the slide-roll ratio (SRR) and the difference in thermal conductivity between contact materials, and the other is caused by the contact pressure between the asperities through the oil film.

Effects of carbon content and hardness on rolling contact fatigue resistance in heavily loaded pearlitic rail steels 査読有り

To reproduce the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damage of rail steel used in heavy haul railways and to clarify its possible mechanism, the RCF characteristics of pearlitic steel with different carbon content and initial hardness values are evaluated using a two-disk-type machine. The results indicate that the number of spalls and the crack depth decrease with increasing carbon content of pearlitic steel even when the initial hardness is almost the same level. Furthermore, an increase in the carbon content increases the hardness of the rolling contact surface, resulting in the suppression of the plastic flow development. Results also indicate that the crack inclination angle varies depending on the carbon content. According to these results, a possible mechanism for the suppression of fatigue crack propagation in higher carbon pearlitic steel is proposed on the basis of the fracture mechanics approach.

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Is there a critical thickness over which the solids can be considered as an elastic half-space? If it exists, what is the crucial factor determining the critical thickness? And how the specimen thickness affects the real contact area growth of the textured surface? The reply to these questions could surely provide a proper guideline for elastomer product design such as seals. With this in mind, the elastic contact of two-dimensional regular wavy surface with a flat surface are studied by using four types of blocks of silicone rubber as specimen under decompression and wet environments. The results suggest there exists the critical thickness depending on the sizes of the contact surface and the pitch of asperities of the wavy surface.

In the 2nd report, the evaluation factors for void closure under the condition of multipass forging revealed that true strain εz in the z direction is appropriate for the evaluation factors for void closure. However, although the effectiveness of the hydrostatic stress ratio σm /σeq for void closure was clear in the 1st report, the reasons were not clarified. In this paper, we investigated the effects of stress factors on void closure and its handling through numerical experiments. The following results were obtained. 1) By using the true stress in each direction, the deformation behavior of voids can be evaluated as a dimensional change of the diameter on the basis of the frictionless model. 2) In the z stroke direction, the void is easier to close than in the frictionless model when σz /σeq is -1 or less, and harder to close than in the frictionless model if not. 3) The void diameter in the x direction, dx , is smaller than in the frictionless model when σx /σeq is 0 or less, and larger than in the frictionless model if not. 4) When there is a void on the axis of symmetry, σm /σeq can be used to evaluate εz for void closure and the dimensional change of dx . In addition, we clarified the influences of material size, void size, and mechanical properties of the material on void closure.

For manufacturers, rapid and accurate quality control of materials and products in the field is essential for improving competitiveness. Rebound hardness testing is one of the fundamental material tests expected to meet this requirement. However, it has been known that many factors affect rebound hardness which may cause the fluctuation in the measured value. In order to elucidate the effect of the fixing method of the specimen, the coefficient of restitution of a hammer using a Vickers indenter was compared with and without bolting the specimen to the base. The motions of the hammer and the specimen were measured simultaneously using two laser Doppler vibrometers and were also numerically analyzed using an elastoplastic finite element method. It has been clarified that, in the case of without bolting, the restitution coefficient is decreased compared to with bolting. The decreasing tendency becomes larger as the impact point moves away from the specimen center. The rebounding behaviors of the hammer and the specimen without bolting can be reproduced with a numerical model in which an appropriate elastic film is inserted between the specimen and the base. The numerical results show that the hammer impact causes rigid body motion in the specimen, which consumes hammer energy, resulting in a decrease in the coefficient of restitution. The range in which the coefficient of restitution can change is also evaluated by assuming a simple two-body collision model.

One of the methods to avoid rolling contact fatigue is to reduce the film pressure due to surface roughness and the magnitude of its fluctuation. The roughness on rolling/sliding concentrated contacting surfaces has generally different asperity heights. In this study, it has been clarified, using a fully flooded non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis in contact between materials with different thermal conductivities and roughness asperity heights, which surface velocity should be increased and which roughness asperity height should be lowered to reduce the magnitudes of film pressure and its fluctuation. The results obtained will make a new contribution to the combination of roughness heights on the EHL contact surfaces.

The interaction and surface features between point contact surfaces composed of longitudinal roughness with infinite or finite length and transverse roughness were discussed based on a transient non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model. Each surface shape is greatly affected by the difference in elastic moduli, thermal conductivities, and velocities of both contact surfaces. There is a large difference in pressure behavior when the transverse roughness is in contact with the longitudinal roughness with finite length and when it is in contact with the longitudinal roughness with infinite length. In the contact between surfaces with infinitely long longitudinal and transverse roughness, the friction coefficient is lower when the surface with longitudinal roughness has a low thermal conductivity than when it has a high thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the pressure fluctuation is larger when the transverse roughness surface has a high thermal conductivity than when it has a low thermal conductivity.

In order to clarify the effect of thermal conductivity on non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) in the point contact with longitudinal roughness on one surface or on both surfaces, numerical calculations are carried out. The contact is formed by ceramics and steel. The surface shapes of both contact solids are investigated separately. It was found that the pressure at ridges shows lower than that at grooves when the speed of a material with low thermal conductivity is faster than that of a material with high thermal conductivity. In the opposite case, such a phenomenon never occurs. This abnormal pressure variation is largely affected by the combination of contact materials and running conditions.

The transient behavior of tribo-characteristics caused by micro-dimples on point contact surfaces with different mechanical and thermal properties was investigated based on non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis. The dimples were assumed to exist on both contact surfaces and the surface shapes of the contact bodies were evaluated separately. It is pointed out that surface texturing due to the micro-dimples is not necessarily beneficial in EHL contacts under fully flooded conditions since the micro-dimples provide a high pressure and a thin minimum film thickness as compared with the case of contacts with smooth surfaces, although the friction coefficient of surfaces with micro-dimples is always lower than that of the smooth surfaces. In order to obtain relatively good tribo-characteristics, the velocity of the surface with low thermal conductivity should be faster than that with high thermal conductivity, and the wavelengths of micro-dimples in the direction of motion on both surfaces should be different.

Previous studies have shown that true strain is effective for evaluating void closure in multipass forging. However, the above-mentioned result was obtained by numerical simulation and an experiment using hot steel with a reduced-scale model having a spherical void, and it has not been confirmed whether it is effective with a real machine. Therefore, in this study, the effectiveness of using true strain was verified in real machine tests. The following conclusions were obtained. 1) In the ultrasonic test (UT) after the third forging, despite the equivalent strain applied to two steel ingots being the same, a large difference occurred in the defect distribution. From this result, it was clarified that the closing behavior of the void in actual machines under multipass forging cannot be evaluated using equivalent strain. 2) In the UT after the fourth forging, as a result of applying the same true strain to two steel ingots, the defects of both steel ingots almost disappeared and the results were the same. Therefore, it was clarified that the closing behavior of the void in actual machines under multipass forging can be evaluated using true strain.

The film thickness profile obtained by the optical interferometry technique merely represents a separation between contact surfaces and does not give the surface shape of contact surfaces. It has been pointed out that the actual shape of the surface roughness in rolling and/or sliding EHL contacts must be evaluated by separately obtaining the surface shape of contact bodies. The degree of the amplitude reduction in actual roughness depends on the mechanical properties of both contacting surfaces. That is, the deformation of roughness and the pressure at which roughness locates are controlled by the interrelationship between the rough surface and the mating surface caused by rolling and/or sliding motion. The method of finding surface profiles of both bodies separately and also the pressure distribution from the interferogram obtained by the optical interferometry technique is proposed in “Appendix”.
