    <p>Previous studies on poppet valves have revealed that there are various flow patterns in the flow field around the valve body and that the flow pattern inside the poppet valve has various effects on the poppet valve. Recently, Masuda et al. have reproduced the hysteresis phenomenon on the pressure and flowrate characteristics of a poppet valve by CFD analysis coupled with an equation of motion. Unfortunately, their paper does not describe the detailed relationship between the hysteresis characteristics and the flow pattern. In this study, by succeeding and developing the work of Masuda et al. and including the results of previous studies, we have systematically organized the flow patterns of poppet valves into five types and clarified the relationship between the hysteresis characteristics and flow patterns. In addition, the flow force acting on the poppet valve connecting the hysteresis characteristic and the flow pattern has also been clarified.</p>

    <p>A potential way to reduce the noise generated by construction machinery cooling systems is to satisfy the flow rate required for cooling at lower fan speeds, and a promising approach to achieving this goal involves finding ways to reduce the pressure drop that occurs in the cooling system ventilation passages. Towards that end, approaches using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have proven effective for estimating three-dimensional (3D) spatial pressure drops, but there have been few reports on actual loss mechanisms. In this study, the mechanisms of pressure drops that occur inside a cooling system enclosure and around exhaust port vents were investigated by capturing the flow discharged by the axial fan within the enclosure into the atmosphere via the exhaust port. We found that portions of the fan outlet flow divert significantly inside the enclosure and are exhausted at exhaust port outlets located some distance away from the fan. We also found that the pressure drops in such locations are larger than experienced by flow discharged via the shortest path. Since flows within the enclosure collide with each other and become unsettled around the exhaust port, turbulent kinetic energy increases, thus intensifying the pressure drop. Hence, by expelling the flow at the exhaust port via the shortest path without allowing it to mix chaotically inside the enclosure, the flow rate can be increased using the same fan speed.</p>

    <p>A jet in crossflow formed by the interaction between the jet and a main flow is a typical unsteady flow. Jet in crossflow have been studied using experimental and numerical approaches. In particular, a sweeping jet in crossflow has recently attracted attention from the viewpoint of active flow separation control. A sweeping jet, which is an oscillating jet with high frequency and large amplitude, energy can be injected widely into the flow separation area. However, the flow fields formed by the interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow and their flow mechanisms are poorly understood, it has not been put to practical use. Furthermore, the flow structure produced by the interaction between a sweeping jet and a main flow with different behaviors is very complex and difficult to understand. Therefore, it is extremely important to elucidate the flow structure generated by the interaction between a sweeping jet and a main flow. In this study, the detailed vortex structure generated by the interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow was quantitatively examined using stereo PIV. The vortex structure behaves differently depending on the velocity ratio. The larger velocity ratio, a sweeping jet extends to the wake and develops near the wall.</p>

    <p>A sweeping jet produced by a fluidic oscillator has recently been examined from the viewpoint of flow separation control. A sweeping jet, which is an oscillating jet with high frequency and large amplitude, is generated by the internal structure of the oscillator, which eliminates the need for a drive unit. Sweeping jets have attracted attention as an active flow control device. Studies have proposed active flow control techniques for an airfoil based on sweeping jets. Most of these studies focused on the characteristics of the dynamic forces acting on the airfoil. However, the flow fields formed by the interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow and their flow mechanisms are poorly understood, especially for the case where a sweeping jet is ejected into a main flow when a flow field is used to control flow separation. In this study, the detailed vortex structure generated by the interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow was quantitatively examined using stereo PIV. The stream tube generated by the interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow consists of two vortex tubes near the outlet of the sweeping jet at a location of 2.0<i>d</i> to 6.0<i>d</i>. At the wake over 10.0<i>d</i>, a pair of vortex tubes gradually separates.</p>

    <p>Sweeping jet is a jet that oscillates at high velocity and is known to have a higher mixing effect. Therefore, it is attracting attention especially from the viewpoint of flow control. In fact, although reports have been made that contribute to control, the flow characteristics that directly contribute to control have not been clarified, and optimization and practical application have not progressed. Moreover, it has been shown that the flow splits in the wake and that a vortex structure similar to a single Jet in cross flow is emitted to the left and right near the exit of the sweeping jet, but the formation and decay processes that link them have not yet been clarified. In this study, we focus on the temporal changes of the flow structure generated near the exit of the inclined sweeping jet and elucidate them. In addition, numerical simulations are used to capture changes in spatial and temporal phenomena in detail.</p>

    <p>One solution to reduce the cooling system noise generated by construction machinery is to drive the fan at low speed while ensuring the flow rate required for the cooling system. An approach to achieve this is to reduce the pressure drop that occurs in the flow path in the cooling system. Using CFD is effective for estimating the three-dimensional spatial pressure drop characteristics of the system, but the mechanism of pressure drop that occurs in the three-dimensional flow field has not been clarified. In this study, the flow field around the axial flow fan placed in the cooling system enclosure is visualized, and the mechanism of pressure drop that occurs in the three-dimensional flow field considering the actual configuration is clarified. With the default exhaust port, we found that portions of the fan outlet flow divert significantly inside the enclosure and are exhausted at exhaust port outlets located some distance away from the fan. With the optimized exhaust port, there are few diverting flow and the flow in the enclosure is discharged in a shorter route than the default exhaust port, so the pressure drop is reduced and the flow rate is increased. Hence, by expelling the flow at the exhaust port via the shortest path without allowing it to mix chaotically inside the enclosure, the flow rate can be increased using the same fan speed.</p>

    <p>W Suppressing the pressure fluctuations distributed on the blade surface of an axial fan is applied as one of the means to reduce the noise generated in the cooling system of construction machinery. For that purpose, it is effective to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to capture the 3D vortex structure around a fan blade. However, while there have been many reports on the flow field formed around the blades of a fan alone or an axial fan with a duct-shaped shroud, the influence of the vortex structure formed at the actual operating point of the axial fan on the pressure fluctuation on the blade surface has not been sufficiently discussed. In this study, the three-dimensional vortex structure around the fan blade installed in the cooling system is investigated, and in particular, the influence of the wing tip leakage vortex on the pressure fluctuation on the fan blade surface is clarified. Wing tip leakage vortex that flow from forward in the direction of rotation of the fan interfere with a blade while oscillating periodically in the y-axis direction. The oscillation of the forward wing tip leakage vortex causes the separation position of the newly formed wing tip leakage vortex to change, and as a result, the pressure fluctuation increases at the tip of the blade suction surface near the separation position.</p>

    <p>The Fluidic Oscillator can permanently generate a high-velocity oscillating jet (Sweeping jet) and give a large fluctuation to the flow field without driving parts. Therefore, it is attracting attention as a new active flow control device. However, the flow characteristics that directly contribute to flow separation control have not been sufficiently clarified, and their optimization and practical application have not progressed. Therefore, in order to clarify the details of the flow characteristics that contribute to the flow separation control, it is necessary to clarify the flow structure generated by the sweeping jet that blows into the main flow from the wall surface.In this study, we clarify the growth process of the vortex structure generated by the interaction of the sweeping jet, which blows out from the wall at 30 degrees to the main flow, by numerical simulation. It is conducted to understand the complex and large-scale flow structure and its generation process generated by a sweeping jet in the main flow. The vortex structure forms one flow tube at <i>z</i>/<i>d</i> < 4.5 and splits into two at <i>z</i>/<i>d</i> > 4.5. Shear layer vortices with the same frequency as the oscillation frequency are generated in the stream tube, and after splitting into two, it is generated alternately to the left and right. After that, at <i>z</i>/<i>d</i> > 6.0, the shear layer vortex begins to collapse due to wall interference, and at <i>z</i>/<i>d</i> > 7.5 it transforms into discrete vortices.</p>

    <p>Butterfly generates unsteady dynamic fluid force with a pair of vortex rings. In order to elucidate the flight mechanism of butterflies, it is necessary not only to clarify the vortex rings formed around the wings but also elucidate the characteristics of the unsteady fluid force generated by the flapping motion. By applying the momentum theory to the vortex rings formed during flapping motion, it is possible to estimate the force generated by flapping motion. In this study, we reconstruct a pair of vortex rings formed by flapping motion based on a small number of visualization results and elucidate dynamic fluid force characteristics. A part of estimation result of Lift estimated by the rough shape vortex rings generated by downstroke and upstroke do not match with the direct measurement result. But not only the peak value of estimation result of Lift is near with the direct measurement result quantitatively but also the value of estimation result between upstroke is a small negative as well as the direct measurement result. Although there is a phase difference between the estimation result and direct measurement result, there is a qualitative and quantitative agreement between estimation results and direct measurement result. From those results, butterfly generate the unsteady dynamic Lift between downstroke, especially at butterfly spread wing maximum (<i>t</i>/<i>T</i> = 0.40). After that, the unsteady dynamic Lift decrease and become 0 at upstroke.</p>

    <p>The energy loss of the airflow generated by forced convection in the cooling system included in heavy construction machinery is due to friction and turbulence in its ventilation path, and its behavior is three-dimensional. Therefore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is effective in clarifying the three-dimensional energy loss mechanism, but there are few reports that three-dimensionally capture the flow field in the cooling system of construction machinery, especially including some components around the axial fan. In this study, the flow field of the entire cooling system was visualized by numerical simulation using ANSYS-CFX17.0, and the effect of the three-dimensional flow field formed around the blades of the axial flow fan on the fan performance was investigated. From the results of CFD analysis, the fan performance is inferior in the case of the axial fan only than in the case of the entire cooling system, which is consistent with the blockage effect of the wing tip leakage vortex limiting the air flowing into the impeller. The wing tip leakage vortex is large-scale and has a high vorticity, and is divided into leading edge of adjacent blade because it flows in the tangential direction while maintaining the same height as the wing tip.</p>

    <p>A potential way to reduce cooling system noises generated by heavy construction machinery is to generate the required cooling airflow with a low fan speed, and one way to accomplish this is to optimize the ventilation path through which the airflow generated by the cooling fan passes. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach would be effective for modeling the three-dimensional pressure drop characteristic of such systems. However there have been few reports aimed at clarifying the loss generation mechanisms or suggesting minimization methods based on flow field viewpoints. Accordingly, in this study, we visualize the three-dimensional (3D) flow field characteristics of an electric cooling fan system installed within the cooling enclosure of a heavy construction machinery and investigate the details of the system’s pressure drop mechanisms. The total pressure drop that occurs in the exhaust side enclosure accounts for 26% of the total pressure drop that occurs in the entire enclosure. In the exhaust side enclosure, the pressure drop is increased because the shape of the exhaust port is not corresponded to annular flow of the cooling fan wake.</p>

    <p>Poppet valves are often used as a pressure / flow rate control valve for a hydraulic system. Much research has been conducted on the characteristics of poppet valves. Hysteresis characteristics have emerged in pressure-flow characteristic experiments of poppet valves designed and prototyped by the author. In order to clarify the mechanism of this hysteresis characteristic, we firconfirmed the reproduction of hysteresis and confirmed the validity of the research policy. Specifically, we investigated the internal flow by CFD analysis and examined the reproduction of hysteresis characteristics by CFD. The CFD software used is Simerics MP +, which allows CFD analysis to be combined with the valve's equation of motion. First, the precision of CFD analysis was verified by confirming that the experimental values of in the reference and calculated values were in good agreement. Furthermore, CFD steady flow analysis of the internal flow was performed, and the validity of the calculation results such as the flow patterns, flow coefficient, and flow force was examined. As a result, it was clarified that there is a flow pattern that can be roughly divided into two types of internal flow with different flow rates. Then, by changing the flow rate in a time-dependent manner using CFD, we were able to reproduce the hysteresis characteristics that are in good agreement with the experimental results.</p>

    <p>In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the flow field around elastic airfoils that perform unsteady motion, and many studies have been conducted using experimental and numerical approaches. There are many reports on the relationship between the wake structure of the unsteady airfoils and the dynamic fluid force acting on them. On the other hand, the dynamic behaviors of micro vortex structure and the growth process of the vortex structure have not been clarified sufficiently. The purpose of our present study is to clarify the growth process of the vortex structure in the vicinity of the wall. Especially, the authors focus on the movement of the wall and defined the as the temporal change in the spatial gradient in order to evaluate the elastic deformation quantitatively. The authors perform the numerical simulation of the flow field around a heaving elastic airfoil by using ANSYS CFX 17.0 and investigate the dynamic behaviors of the vorticity in vicinity of the wall.</p>

    <p>Soft actuators, or artificial muscles, based on conducting polymers, constitute the base for the development of promising polymeric sensing motors, tools for surgeons, or zoomorphic and anthropomorphic soft robots. Some electrochemical characterizations of these soft actuators of artificial muscles have been already reported. In this study, the behaviors of the asymmetric bilayer artificial muscles, PPy-ClO<sub>4</sub>/PPy-DBS worked in 0.5 M NaClO<sub>4</sub> aqueous solutions were discussed by the dynamo-voltammetric responses and coulo-dynamic Evolution responses. Especially, the authors are focusing on the thickness ratio between the PPy-ClO<sub>4</sub> and the PPy-DBS layers in this study. In this study, the author investigates the dynamic behavior of the bending actuation of the asymmetric bilayer artificial muscles based on some kinds of the thickness ratio between the anion-driven and the cation-driven layers.</p>

    <p>Flow field around moving airfoils capable of flexible elastic deformation has become a focus of attention in recent years. These flow fields may be understood as a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem, and the motion and deformation of elastic airfoils, as well as the associated vortex flow phenomena in their vicinity, are complicated. Many studies on the flow field and the characteristics of dynamic forces acting on them around the elastic moving body have also carried out by the experimental and numerical approaches. The macro scale vortex structure and the characteristics of dynamic forces acting on the elastic moving airfoil have been understood. However, the details of the vortex structure and the growth process of the vorticity in a vicinity of the wall of an elastic airfoil has not been clarified sufficiently. In this study, the authors investigate the growth process of the vorticity in a vicinity of the wall of an elastic airfoil by FSI simulation using ANSYS 17.0/ANSYS CFX 17.0. In order to clarify the parameters which contributes to the growth process of the vorticity, the flow fields in the vicinity of the wall of the elastic and the rigid airfoils are visualized.</p>

    <p>A fluidic oscillator generates a sweeping jet with high frequency and large amplitude and is characterized by its capability for jet ejection over a wide range and for fluid oscillation by an internal structure that eliminates the need for a drive unit. Recently, the sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator has attracted attention as an active flow control device. Many studies on flow control techniques using the sweeping jet have been reported. However, the details of the flow structure produced by the interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow are not yet understood sufficiently. In particular, the vortex structure or the flow mechanism produced by the interaction between the sweeping jet has not been clarified. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the macro-scale vortex structure produced by the interaction between the sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator and the main flow. The detailed vortex structure produced by these interactions is visualized quantitatively by a numerical simulation.</p>

    <p>A jet in cross flow is one of typical phenomena in fluid engineering and many studies about this flow field have been already reported. On the other hand, a sweeping jet produced by a fluidic oscillator has a high frequency and a large amplitude and is attracted attention from the viewpoint of an active flow control in recent years. However, the studies on sweeping jet in cross flow have not been understood sufficiently and the detailed flow structures and vortex structures have not clarified. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the detailed flow structures in the sweeping jet in cross flow by using a numerical simulation. Especially, the authors focus on the flow structures and its dynamic behaviors formed by an interaction between the sweeping jet and main flow near the outlet of the sweeping jet.</p>

    <p>Previous studies have shown that the elastic airfoil with heaving motion generates a strong vorticity on the airfoil wall and emits a strong vorticity in the wake compared to the rigid airfoil. However, how spatial gradient and vorticity development are related has not been elucidated. This research investigates the relationship between the time change of the spatial gradient of the airfoil wall and the vorticity created on the moving airfoil wall. Specifically, using NACA0010 with heaving motion with the strength of heaving motion <i>St</i> = 0.3, the heaving amplitude <i>A</i> = <i>c</i>/5, the attack angle <i>α</i> is 16 °, Re based on chord length is Re = 4,000. The airfoil has a non-dimensional distance from the leading edge <i>x</i>/<i>c</i> = 0 to 0.25 as a rigid part and <i>x</i>/<i>c</i> = 0.25 to 1.0 as an elastic part, and numerical analysis by fluid-structure interaction analysis using ANSYS 17.0 / ANSYS-CFX 17.0. For the turbulence model, we use k-ω of RANS, which has a relatively small computational load. The fact that the non-dimensional vorticity vicinity the trailing edge of the airfoil is developing when the downward deformation is small and only near the trailing edge, not when the airfoil wall is largely deformed downward.</p>

    <p>The sweeping jet from a fluidic oscillator has attracted attention as an active flow control device. Many studies on flow control techniques using a sweeping jet have been conducted. However, interaction between the sweeping jet and the main flow is expected to occur, and a complex vortex structure will be generated. The authors have reported the flow characteristics generated by interactions between the sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator and the main flow based on stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement. Finally, the sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator spreads out over a wider range due to its interaction with the main flow. At the high-velocity rate, <i>V<sub>j</sub></i>/<i>V<sub>0</sub></i>, the high-velocity jets at the center of the sweeping jet are surrounded by low-velocity jets with a strong rotational component at the outside. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the development process of the detailed vortex structure generated by the interaction between the sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator and the main flow.</p>

    <p>A typical example of the flow field around a moving elastic body is that around butterfly wings, which contain many veins and can undergo elastic deformation. In recent years, quantitative flow visualization techniques, such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurement, have advanced rapidly, and the flow fields around insect wings have been actively investigated using such techniques. The characteristics of the dynamic forces generated by the flapping insect wing have attracted a great deal of attention. However, the characteristics of dynamic forces generated by the flapping insect wing are not yet sufficiently understood. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of dynamic lift generated by the flapping butterfly wing. We measured the dynamic lift produced by a flapping butterfly, using a six-axes sensor. The sixaxes sensor was synchronized with a high speed camera to capture the flapping motion of the wing, and the dynamic lift was related to the flapping motion of the butterfly wing.</p>

    <p>The flow field around a moving airfoil is one of the typical unsteady flow and many studies on the flow field around the moving airfoil have been carried out with experimental and numerical approaches. Especially, not only the dynamic behavior of the leading edge vortex and wake structure of moving airfoils, but also their dynamic lift and thrust characteristics have been already reported. In recent years, the flow field around an elastic moving body has been attracted attention. The flow field around the elastic body is treated as a coupled problem between the fluid and structure (fluid structure interaction, FSI), and a series of phenomena, motions, structural deformations and the generation/growth/development of vortices are reported continuously. Many studies on the flow field around the elastic moving body have also carried out. However, the impact of elastic deformation effects on the vortices generated in the vicinity of the wall and the dynamic behaviors of the micro scale vortices have not been clarified sufficiently.     <p>The gas-liquid two-phase flow is a flow in which gas and liquid are mixed, and in particular, the behavior of the gas-liquid interface is a complicated flow field with strong three-dimensional and extremely non-stationarity, it is considered difficult to understanding. In this study, we focused on clarifying the dynamic behavior of gas and the mechanism of bubbles breakup in the cross flow in which another fluid is blown into the main flow and revealed them. Concretely, we caught the three-dimensional dynamic behavior of the gas-liquid interface by VOF method using ANSYS CFX 17.2. As the results, at the gas-liquid interface of the bubble cloud, there are waves propagating from the cylinder to the rear end of the bubble cloud. These waves are formed by iso-surfaces of the pressure which stretches in a tubular shape and these periodically occur from the wall surface of cylinder.</p>

    <p>Many studies on the dynamic behaviors of bubble in the jet in cross flow have been already reported in both experimental and numerical approaches. However, the break-up mechanism has not been understood. The authors are trying to understand the break-up mechanism from the bubble cloud to small bubbles. In this study, the authors tried to clarify the break-up process from the bubble cloud in the jet in cross flow to small bubbles using by VOF method using ANSYS CFX 17.2. The waves on the surface of the bubble cloud synchronized with the karman vortex street. Moreover, the break-up of the bubble from the bubble cloud also synchronized with the dynamic behavior of the karman vortex. Based on these results, it is predicted that the dynamic behavior of the karman vortex rolled up from the cylinder contributes to the break-up of the bubble from the bubble cloud.</p>

    <p>The flow field around an unsteady airfoil is a common type of unsteady flow, and many researchers have experimentally and numerically investigated unsteady flows around moving airfoils. In recent years, the flow field around moving airfoils capable of flexible elastic deformation has become a focus of attention. The flow field around an elastically deforming airfoil may be understood as a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem, and the motion and deformation of elastic airfoils, as well as the associated dynamic behavior of the vortices, are complicated. In this study, the dynamic behavior of the vortices rolled up from the leading edge of a heaving elastic airfoil in a separation region through FSI simulation using ANSYS 16.1/ANSYS CFX 16.1. In particular, the FSI simulation of the flow field on a heaving elastic airfoil at an angle of attack of 16°, which is in the separation region under stationary conditions, and the dynamic behavior of both the leading edge vortex and the vorticity in the vicinity of the suction surface were clarified.</p>

    <p>We investigate the dynamic behavior of the vortices rolled up from the trailing edge of the heaving elastic airfoil, the wake structure and the accelerating flow in the wake by a Fluid Structure Interaction simulation using ANSYS CFX 16.0 / ANSYS 16.0. The vortices rolled up from the trailing edge of the heaving elastic airfoil covered with wall are interfered with wall strongly and the vorticity in the wake are kept high compared with that without wall. As a result, the thrust producing vortex street is formed clearly in the wake of the heaving elastic airfoil with wall and their vorticities are also kept high. Moreover, the clear accelerating flow is formed in the wake of the heaving elastic airfoil with wall and it becomes large even behind eight chord length due to the interaction between vortices and wall.</p>

In recent years, the flow field in the vicinity of moving airfoils capable of flexible elastic deformation has become a focus of attention. Flow in the vicinity of an elastically deforming airfoil may be understood as a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem, and the motion and deformation of elastic airfoils, as well as the associated vortex flow phenomena in their vicinity, are complicated. In this study, we investigate the dynamic behavior of vortices on elastic heaving airfoil in a separation region, at 16 degree of attack angle, by fluid structure interaction simulation using ANSYS 16.1/ANSYS CFX 16.1.</p>

    The flow field around an elastic moving body has attracted attention in recent years and can be modeled as a coupled problem between the fluid and structure (fluid/structure interaction, FSI). Many studies have been carried out on the flow field around an elastic moving body using experimental and numerical approaches. However, the impact of elastic deformation on the vortices generated in the vicinity of the wall and the dynamic behavior of micro scale vortices have not been clarified sufficiently. The present study investigates the dynamic behavior of the leading-edge vortex and the vortices that form on the suction surface of a heaving elastic airfoil via FSI simulation using ANSYS 16.1/ANSYS CFX 16.1. The growth of the leading-edge vortex of the elastic airfoil is slightly delayed compared to that of the rigid airfoil due to the effective angle of attack. Moreover, the small effective angle of attack for the elastic airfoil strengthens the leading-edge vortex and delays its growth. Vorticity with clockwise rotation grows in the vicinity of the wall due to elastic deformation. This vorticity mainly consists of a strong rotational component.
