    <p>  In this paper, we introduce a mean-field theory to describe phase separations in mixtures of a nematic liquid crystal and a colloidal particle. The theory takes into account an orientational ordering of liquid crystals and a crystalline ordering of colloidal particles. We calculate phase diagrams on the temperature-concentration plane, depending on interactions between a liquid crystal and a colloidal surface. We find various phase separation processes, such as a nematic-crystal phase separation and nematic-isotropic-crystal triple point. Inside the binodal curves, we have new unstable and metastable regions which are important in phase ordering dynamics of colloidal dispersions.</p>

    A mean field theory is introduced to describe nematic phases of a banana-shaped molecule of a bend angle (θB) with an axial chirality. We here take into account internal rotations: gauche- and trans-states, of the C-C bonds on the alkyl chains of the banana-shaped molecules. Using the Boltzmann statistics, the mean rotation angle is given as a function of temperature and the bond energy difference between the gauche- and the trans-states. We calculate phase diagrams on the temperature–bend angle plane and find six uniaxial and biaxial nematic phases with Landau points, depending on the bond energy.

    <p>A mean-field theory is introduced to describe heliconical nematic (NTB), heliconical smectic-C (SmCTB), and biaxial heliconical smectic-C (SmCTB,b) phases with mirror symmetry breaking. We extend our previous theories of the NT B phase to the heliconical smectic-C phases, by taking into account one-dimensional spatial ordering of smectic layers. The calculated phase diagrams on the temperature–alkyl chain length plane show a rich variety of phase transitions: first- and second-order NTB-SmCTB transitions, etc., including tricritical, tetracritical, and multicritical points. Our theory is qualitatively consistent with an experimental phase diagram.</p>
