    Rapid freezing is utilized for cell preservation without the application of cryoprotectants to rapidly freeze water-containing specimens such as living organisms, foods, and paints. Prior studies have predominantly focused on the freezing behavior of micrometer-to-millimeter-sized droplets on cold surfaces, examining variables such as droplet shape and freezing time. However, the freezing dynamics of nanometer-sized droplets on cold surfaces remain unexplored. In this study, we employed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the freezing behavior of nanometer-sized droplets impacting a cold surface. We did not observe a corner forming at the top of the nanometersized droplets because the freezing process was too rapid for internal flow to develop. Our findings indicate that the droplet's temperature rapidly increases due to the heat of adsorption upon contact with the surface and the conversion of kinetic energy. Furthermore, we found that the contact angle post-freezing is influenced by multiple factors, including wettability, temperature of cold surface, impact speed, and droplet size.

    Biomimetic-inspired surfaces have the potential to enhance water transport efficiency, as channels with hierarchical micro/nanoscale structures demonstrate improved capillary flow characteristics. The applicability of the classical Lucas-Washburn equation for capillary-driven flow in open rectangular microchannels has been debated, and its validity for hierarchical microchannels remains uncertain. In this study, numerical simulations using Volume-of-fluid- based OpenFOAM were used to examine the effect of rib angle in hierarchical microchannels, focusing on the impact of fabrication errors on capillary performance. The results indicate that if the rib is not perpendicular to the bottom surface/wall of the channel, capillary performance reduces. With the change in the type of rib inclination, the capillary performance also changes. This study underscores the importance of precise fabrication in optimizing the efficiency of hierarchical microchannels.

    Surfaces with hierarchical micro/nanoscale structures result in unique flow characteristics in nature. The validity of the classical Lucas–Washburn equation has been argued for the capillary-driven flow in open rectangular microchannels. Meanwhile, there is no guarantee that the Lucas–Washburn equation is valid for the capillary-driven flow in hierarchical microchannels. Here, we perform 3D numerical simulations using the OpenFOAM Volume-of-Fluid method to predict the capillary-driven flow of water in a closed hierarchical microchannel. It is found that the imbibition rate is increased in the hierarchical microchannel, and the mean imbibition rate shows a dependence on the height of minor channel. Consequently, an optimized hierarchical channel geometry has been proposed to improve the capillary flow in microchannels.

    Interfacial thermal resistance at solid–liquid interface is of great importance for thermal design of electronic devices. However, the quantitative investigation of interfacial thermal resistance is still open for question. In this study, the steady state method based on ASTM-5470 standard was applied to measure the interfacial thermal resistance at the microstructured Si–water interface. The effects of microstructure geometrical parameters on surface wettability and interfacial thermal resistance were studied. The experimental interfacial thermal resistance at the microstructured Siwater interface shows a dependence on the microstructure geometrical parameters, in correspondence with the surface wetting based on the intermediate wetting state theory.

    <p>Phonon heat transfer across a vacuum nanogap can be induced by quasi-Casimir coupling without electromagnetic fields. For the thermal energy transport of diatomic molecules, the contribution of the atomic surface termination to the phonon heat transfer across a solid–vacuum–solid nanogap is still not well understood. Here, we investigated the thermal energy transport across a SiC–SiC nanogap with four kinds of atomic surface terminations using classical non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The thermal resonance between interfacial layers of identical atomic termination results in significant heat transfer enhancement across the SiC–SiC nanogap, while that of non-identical atomic termination is unnoticeable.</p>

    <p>Increasing the capillary limit is essential to improve the heat transfer performance of heat pipes. In this study, we theoretically estimated the driving force of capillary permeation in an open rectangular microchannel with temperature difference along the flow direction. The theoretical prediction enables the channel optimization for increasing the maximum heat transfer rate of heat pipe. Experimentally, there kinds of microchannels with same channel width but different channel heights were fabricated on Si substrate for the micro heat pipe. The micro heat pipe with channel optimization demonstrated the better heat transfer performance than those of the others and thus verified the theoretical prediction.</p>

    <p>We conducted experiments to investigate the synergetic effects of the channel size and liquid properties on capillary-driven flow in open rectangular microchannels. Pure water, 20 wt% glycerol solution and 20 wt% ethanol solution were used as the working fluids in the Si superhydrophilic microchannels. We found that a larger ratio of surface tension to viscosity of the working fluid results in a greater imbibition rate. The optimal channel size was obtained when the aspect ratio of channel width to height was 2, in spite of the discrepancy in the working fluids. The experimental results were consistent with the theoretical model proposed in this work.</p>

    <p>Phonon transmission across a solid–vacuum–solid nanogap can be induced by thermal resonance owing to the quasi-Casimir coupling between interfacial solid layers. However, the thermal energy transport across the nanogap with the existence of adsorbed liquid layers on solid surfaces is still not well understood. Here, the thermal resonances between adsorbed liquid layers were investigated using the classical non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The existence of thermal resonance between the solid–solid or liquid–liquid interfacial layers separated by the vacuum nanogap was verified through the analyses of the atomic vibrational displacements and the vibrational density of states.</p>

    <p>The partial wetting at nano/microstructured surfaces can be described using the intermediate wetting state between the Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel state. However, the limitation of partial wetting model is still unclear. In this study, surface free energy analysis at the microstructured Si-water interface was performed from both theoretical and experimental aspects to verify the partial wetting model. The effective wetting area was estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method for the further analysis of the surface free energy experimentally. The partial wetting model was verified at the fabricated microstructured surfaces with its geometrical parameters smaller than 400 μm.</p>

    <p>The intermediate wetting state at nano/microstructured surfaces can be described using the partial wetting model between the Wenzel and the Cassie-Baxter models. However, the effective wetting area at solid-liquid interface in the intermediate wetting state is still open for question. In this study, micro-patterned Si surfaces were fabricated by deep reactive-ion etching and its effective wetting area was estimated by the electrochemical impedance measurements.     <p>Improving stimuli-responsive and controlled-release properties of thermos-responsive materials attract much attention in the applications to the microfluidic devices, drug delivery system etc. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate the molecular thermos-responsive behavior in the equilibrium aqueous solutions of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomer and its polymer (PNIPAM). The effects of the temperature, solution concentration and the degree of polymerization on the density profiles of both the NIPAM/PNIPAM and water molecules are focused. It is found that although the water molecules distributed uniformly in the NIPAM (monomer) solutions, the density of water in the bulk PNIPAM (polymer) is lower than that at the PNIPAM-water interface. For the simulation cases of 30wt%, degree of polymerization 3, the density of water in the bulk PNIPAM decreases with increasing temperature, showing the thermos-responsive characteristics. The radial distribution function of water and the number density of the hydrophobic group (-CH<sub>3</sub> site) are discussed.</p>
