  • 英語の現在時制諸現象の包括的説明に関わる「状態性」を巡る通時的・共時的研究

    仮定法現在と接続法 / 英語の現在時制 / 状態性 / 現実性・断定 / 単純現在形文法書記述

    研究期間: 2022.04  -  2025.03

     More details

Distinctions between the English simple and Be+V-ing forms have perplexed the users since the 18th century and obfuscated scholars in much a larger scale in the 20th century. This is attributable to Prescriptivism in 19th century grammars intertwined with the vague aspectual concepts introduced to English from Slavic languages. This study, re-evaluating 18th century descriptions of differences between the two forms, suggests that the simple form takes a broader view of the state of affairs, while the Be+V-ing form focuses attention on a phase at an intermediate temporal spot in the course of the situation which can be stative or dynamic.

This study analyzes stative progressives actually used in 18th-century letters, examining the be+V-ing construction mainly in Eighteenth Century Collection Online. The findings being compared with the ones from a BNC corpus research focusing on the stative progressive in colloquial English, it suggests that usage of the construction would have been quite consistent and demonstrates that the progressive is compatible not only with statives construable as possibly dynamic but also with genuinely stative situations both in 18-century and Present-day English.

  • A Cognitive Grammar View on the Be+V-ing Construction

    Mariko Goto

The 16th International Cognitive Linguistics Conference  2023.08  International Cognitive Linguistics Association

     More details

    Event date: 2023.08.07 - 2023.08.11   Language:English   Country:Germany

This study demonstrates how Langacker’s (1991: 209-211) cognitive grammar view of the Be+V-ing construction can help us better understand the basic core meaning of the construction. It also has a viable potential to analyze the basic contrast between the construction with an always-type adverbial (the always+Be+V-ing hereafter) and the simple counterpart diachronically as well as synchronically.
Kranich (2010: 217) assumes that the always+Be+V-ing developed to express by default a negative speaker attitude in the 20th century, because temporariness signified by the Be+V-ing conflicts with continuity implied by the adverb. However, why the conflict should arise and lead to a negative meaning is not entirely clear. Besides, nearly half of the always+Be+V-ing is used in a non-negative sense. Moreover, already in the 18th century, the periphrasis was used in a negative sense as often as it is now. This is supported by evidence including more than 500 examples of the Be+V-ing construction with a stative verb and the always+Be+V-ing in the 18th century texts. Most of them had been left unexplored, though the latter half of the century is a critical period in investigating the construction.
Elucidating the “internal perspective” which the construction takes on the participialized situation, Langacker (1991: 209) notes that the perspective is brought about by integrating Be functioning as the profile determinant and the head of the composite structure with the V-ing. This should effect the conceptualizer being existent in the midst of (i.e., experiencing a portion of) the participialized situation. Hence it would be reasonable to say that the construction profiles internality (inside-ness) rather than temporariness. The inside portion, captured through the perspective, obviously spans shorter than the whole, which can most likely be connected to the clearer, more focalized and vivid imageries. What triggers emotional coloring would, then, not necessarily be the conflict, but rather the close link between the clearer picture and emotional involvement (c.f. Kensinger: 2007).
Langacker’s view needs to be freed from the traditional notion that only non-statives take the construction. As Killie’s (2014) diachronic study shows, statives also have always been taking it. However, since a stative situation also has an internal phase, where the conceptualizer can be, the internality can still explain diverse phenomena of the periphrasis most comprehensively. Langacker (1991: 262-266) notes that the simple present, including habituals, generally receives a stative construal. While He walks home is a habitual, He’s walking home can denote an internal phase of either a dynamic situation or a habitual. If Beavers always build dams predicates a habitual, so does Beavers are always building dams. It designates a metaphysical situation inductively derived from the conceptualizer’s actual individual perception of the situation ongoing whenever an occasion of assessment occurs to the speaker, whether the speaker may or may not find the animals’ behavior annoying. The difference between I love it, I’m loving it and I’m always loving it can also be described in a parallel manner.
Furthermore, Langacker’s (1991: 26) insightful idea of profile shifting can relate the V-ing in the construction not only to the nominal V-ing but also to a diachronic fact that the form largely functioned as an abstract noun in OE (Irwin: 1967). An early variant of the construction comprising BE and {at/ in/ on}+V-ing also suggests its adequacy. Thanks to his conceptual tool devised in his theoretical framework, we can see that the periphrases with or without always have had consistent properties throughout history.

This study explores why the BE+V-ing construction with always-type adverbials such as always and continually (always-progressive for convenience) as in (1) tends to sound more emphatic or emotionally colored than the simple counterpart as in (2), examining Kranich’s view of the progressive for reference.
    (1) We are always hearing positive feedback.
    (2) We always hear positive feedback.
Based on her quantitative data and using He is always giving people lifts as an example, Kranich (2010: 217) notes that the always-progressive seems to have developed to express, by default, negative speaker attitude in the 20th century. However, while Kranich's (2007: 131) Google search shows that 52% of always-progressives are used in a negative sense today, my survey indicates that the percentage of those yielding negative reading is around 57% in 18th-century letters.
Also, Kranich (2007) regards the always-progressive as a special kind of progressive that needs to be treated separately from other “normal” progressives. However, the line separating the two is not clear enough. Besides, they clearly share intrinsic features of the BE+V-ing construction. For instance, the construction essentially captures an internal phase of the participialized situation, on which the conceptualizer focusses. This feature alone can be sufficient to render the picture more detailed and vivid than the simple form that describes a wide-angle picture of the whole situation denoted by the verb. Always-type adverbials, whether hyperbolic or not, correspond to a situation repetitively holding at any point in time of perception. Therefore, the always-progressive can signify the conceptualizer’s recurrent perceptions of an actual particular subset of the participialized situation. While examples (1) and (2) are both associated with a habitual practice, the former can depict it as a series of recursive phenomena and the latter a metaphysically continuing phenomenon. This would explain why example (1) can sound more emphatic than example (2) does.
As to why the use of the always-progressive is slightly biased toward expressing a negative sense, Kranich (2007: 131) attributes it to a sort of clash between the meanings of the construction and always. However, it appears to make more sense if we link the proportion to Kensinger’s (2007) psychological research evidencing that negative emotion is remembered more accurately and minutely than positive one. More detailed memories would help us pragmatically better prepare for the future. The BE+V-ing construction that can induce a clearer picture than the simple counterpart would be more likely to be employed for describing more detailed and vivid memory. As the tendency seems to represent an aspect of human nature, the relationship between the always-progressive and negative nuance in the 18th century and now would not be so different.

This paper aims to reconcile what has been said for the past 300 years about the be + V-ing form in relation to stativity based on the actual usage data. First, the paper demonstrates that this periphrastic form with a “stative verb” has always been in actual substantial use since the OE period. Most intriguingly, the majority of late-modern English grammars referring to the construction, including Jones (1724), Lowth (1762), Webster (1784), Murray (1795), Bullions (1849), Kerl (1861), Nesfield (1898), employ I am loving as a model. While condemning the example started at the end of the 18th century and spread as the number of prescriptive grammars increased dramatically in the 19th century, linguistic accounts kept treating the construction as aspect-neutral (e.g. White (1870), Onions (1904), Laar (1922), Poldauf (1948), Myers (1952), and Visser (1963)). Jespersen (1932) and Zandvoort (1962) express skepticism as to whether stative constitutes a verbal category in English, examining real examples of the construction in context. At the same time, no data disagrees with the view that the form makes reference to the internal temporal constituency of the participialized situation and that stative situations do not involve change. These findings would indicate that the core function of the form can most adequately be accounted as confining the speaker’s commitment to an internal phase of the participialized situation. Characterizing the form this way can readily explain its affinity with notions such as intensity, immediacy, vividness, actuality (or phenomenality), focalization, intimacy, informality, colloquialism, and tentativeness, as well as its futurate use, the oddity of *It’s being 5 o’clock and why differentiating You’re looking good from You look good is rather difficult. Moreover, it can dispel Michaelis’s (2011) suspicion over Langacker’s (1991) description of the form as well as Granath and Wherrity’s (2013) doubt about the aspectual restriction on the progressive.

The fact that the be + V-ing construction, which has always been more frequent in speech-based text through the history suggests that it would have been much more developed in spoken English than literature assumes. The data from ECCO and the Clift Family Correspondence 1796-1812 as well as recent studies demonstrate that the features of the construction in the 18th century are close to those of the present-day English progressive.
