Experimental and Theoretical Elucidation of Electrochemical CO <inf>2</inf> Reduction on an Electrodeposited Cu <inf>3</inf> Sn Alloy 査読有り

The reaction selectivity of an electrode catalyst can be modulated by regulating its crystal structure, and the modified electrode may show different CO 2 reduction selectivity from that of its constituent metal. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of the electrochemical CO 2 reduction on an electrodeposited Cu 3 Sn alloy by experimental and theoretical analyses. The electrodeposited Cu 3 Sn alloy electrode showed selectivity for CO production at all the applied potentials, and HCOOH production increased with an increase in the applied potential. In particular, hydrocarbon generation was well suppressed on Cu 3 Sn(002). To understand this selectivity change in electrochemical CO 2 reduction, we conducted density functional theory calculations for the reaction on the Cu 3 Sn(002) surface. According to the theoretical analysis, the Cu sites in Cu 3 Sn(002) contributed more to the stabilization of H, COOH, and CO∗ as compared with the Sn sites. Furthermore, the results indicated that Cu 3 Sn(002) decreased the surface coverage of reaction intermediates such as H, COOH, and CO. We believe that these effects promoted CO∗ desorption while suppressing H 2 generation, CO∗ protonation, and C-C bond formation. The results also suggested that the surface Sn concentration significantly affected the reaction selectivity for HCOOH production from CO 2 .

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd In the study, the catalytic edge reactivity on porous Zn electrode has successfully visualized through the electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO. It is well known that the activity of a CO2 reduction reaction catalyst depend on the type of material and surface nano-structure. Consequently, numerous researchers are interested in the relation between the catalyst activity and surface conditions such as morphology, oxidation state, and crystal orientation. However, it is difficult to explain the mechanisms of catalytic CO2 reduction and visualize the catalytic activity. Our results demonstrate, that this strategy not only improved the selective CO production, but also helped visualize the catalytic reactivity on the edge site via open-loop electric potential microscopy (OL-EPM). The obtained OL-EPM image strongly suggests that the edge site of porous Zn acts as an efficient reactive site in the CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction.

Numerous sterilization techniques using ozone have been proposed. However, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals show stronger oxidation activity than ozone, and therefore exert a greater sterilization effect against microorganisms. We recently developed a radical vapor reactor (RVR) as a powerful tool for microorganism sterilization, which is based on the efficient generation and exposure of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals including ozone. Therefore, effective sterilization via ROS generation is expected by optimizing the RVR conditions. In this study, the generations of ROS was measured under various RVR conditions using spin-trapping electron spin resonance analysis and ozone monitoring. We demonstrated the effective sterilization of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis by exposure to ozone, singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radicals whose production levels were successfully controlled.

Cu-Sn alloy electrodes were prepared by simple electrodeposition method for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 into CO and HCOO−. The alloy electrode surfaces provided good selectivity and efficiency in electrochemical CO2 conversion because they provided appropriate binding energies between the metal and the reactive species obtained through CO2 reduction. Therefore, product selectivity can be modulated by altering the Cu-Sn crystal structure of the electrode. Using the Cu-Sn alloy electrodes, electrochemical reduction was performed at applied potentials ranging from − 0.69 to − 1.09 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). During electrochemical CO2 reduction, all the prepared Cu-Sn alloy electrodes showed prominent suppression of hydrogen evolution. In contrast, Cu87Sn13 has high selectivity for CO formation at all the applied potentials, with maximum faradaic efficiency (FE) of 60% for CO at − 0.99 V vs. RHE. On the other hand, Cu55Sn45 obtained a similar selectivity for electrodeposition of Sn, with FE of 90% at − 1.09 V vs. RHE. Surface characterization results showed that the crystal structure of Cu87Sn13 comprised solid solutions that play an important role in increasing the selectivity for CO formation. Additionally, it suggests that the selectivity for HCOO− formation is affected by the surface oxidation state of Sn rather than by crystal structures like intermetallic compounds. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd The dissolved CO 2 that causes ocean acidification has great potential for bioenergy production. In this study, we demonstrate that activated methanogens in waste sewage sludge (WSS) are useful for converting bicarbonate in seawater into methane. These activated methanogens were adapted in different seawater sources for methane production through repeated batch experiments that resulted in an increase of 300–400 fold in the methane yield. During these repeated batch experiments, the microbial communities in WSS adapted to the high salinity of seawater to generate more methane. Microbial community analysis showed the dominance of Achromobacter xylosoxidans, Serrati sp. and methanogens including Methanobacterium sp., Methanosarcina sp., and Methanosaeta concillii. Using a 13 C-labeled isotope, we demonstrate that 81% of the methane is derived from microbial conversion of NaH 13 CO 2 in artificial seawater. Therefore, this study shows that oceans, with the largest surface area on Earth, have a potential as a substrate for methane energy production via an acclimated consortium approach.

Delamination in semiconductor plastic package is a cause of reliability degradation. We have tried to improve the adhesion strength between leadframe and epoxy resin. In this study, organic molecules–metal (Cu) complex “EC tag (Cu)” were employed. It is immobilized on the leadframe surface as adhesion promoter to adhere with thermosetting epoxy resin. In the results, immobilized EC tag (Cu) act as adhesion promoter that shows greater adhesion between leadframe and epoxy resin. Also, the leadframe with adhesion promoter doesn't affect semiconductor assembly characteristics.
