    This study utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain activation during English language use. Our objective was to assess effective teaching methods for Japanese university students learning English as a second language (L2). Eighteen right-handed male volunteers majoring in engineering were divided into two groups based on their TOEIC<sup>®</sup> L&R test scores: a high proficiency group and a low proficiency group. They initially worked individually to complete word recognition, listening, speaking, and speech shadowing tasks in English. Subsequently, they engaged in collaborative tasks with other participants and discussed a topic related to science. Our experiments revealed that four factors are presumably associated with cortical activation: learners’ English proficiency, the level of target words, the type of language activity (listening, speaking, speech shadowing), and individual vs. collaborative learning. Suggestions for effective teaching and learning include selecting an appropriate word level, creating blanks on the working sheet so that learners can focus on the target words or sentences, and tailoring tasks to the English proficiency level of L2 learners.

    <p>The incidence of low back pain (LBP) among children is increasing. Although LBP can be classified into LBP during anteflexion (LBPAF) and LBP during postflexion (LBPPF), their causes remain unknown. In previous research, we focused on analysis of the causes of pediatric LBPAF by stepwise regression using multiple logistic regression (MLR) model, but the model tended to overfit. Therefore, this study aimed to explore pediatric LBPPF and examined the causes using MLR model with elastic net (ENET) and conditional inference forest (CIF) model. We enrolled 319 children aged 4-15 years, approximately 12% of whom had LBPPF and all were older than 7 years of age. Pediatric LBPPF exhibited an earlier age of onset and a higher prevalence when compared with previous data of LBPAF. The MLR, ENET-MLR, and CIF models were developed using 15 variables obtained from questionnaires and physical examinations conducted. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for the three models ranged from 0.68 to 0.72, with accuracy of 68-72%, sensitivity of 50-60%, and specificity of 71-77%. The ENET-MLR and CIF models showed higher accuracy and specificity than the MLR model. Furthermore, the test data accuracy rate did not decrease compared with the training data accuracy rate when using ENET-MLR, whereas the test data accuracy rate decreased more when using CIF. Notably, the ENET-MLR and MLR models identified the same three explanatory variables with low intercorrelation for discriminating between LBPPF and non-LBPPF, and their influence on LBPPF could be explained by the regression coefficients. These three variables were: a history of LBP, increased anterior thigh muscle flexibility, and increased spinal mobility and posterior thigh muscle flexibility. The results of the CIF model revealed that the same variables identified in the two MLR models were the most important variables when calculating the permutation variable importance measures based on the AUC. In conclusion, ENET-MLR is considered to be the best of the three models for discriminating pediatric LBPPF, because it has higher accuracy and specificity than MLR and less overfitting than CIF. Additionally, three factors can be used to discriminate pediatric LBPPF; namely, a history of LBP, increased anterior thigh muscle flexibility, and increased spinal mobility and posterior thigh muscle flexibility.</p>

    <p>近年、腰痛(LBP)を持つ小児が増加している。LBPは疼痛誘発動作を元に前屈時LBP(LBPAF)と後屈時LBP(LBPPF)に分類され、我々はこれまでに小児LBPAFにおける予測モデル開発について報告した。本研究ではLBPPF予測モデル構築を目的とする。319名の小児(11.7 ± 2.9(平均±SD)歳)を対象に年齢やLBPの既往等の5項目と、LBPPFの有無の質問紙調査を行った。LBPPFは7歳以降、37名(12%)の小児で見られLBPAFに比べて多数だった。また149名(12.7 ± 1.6歳)が筋柔軟性、筋力、持久力測定を完了した。そのうち20名のLBPPF小児を対象にステップワイズ法を用いた多変量ロジスティック回帰を使って予測モデルを構築した。方法としてLBPPF10名と非LBPPF64名をランダムに選びモデルをトレーニングし、LBPPF10名、非LBPPF65名のデータによるテストを50回実施した。モデルの入力は質問紙項目及び測定した変数、出力はLBPPFの有無とした。最適モデルの選択にはF値を用い、また性能評価としてAccuracy、Sensitivity、Specificityを求めた。得られた最適モデルはLBP既往と大腿前面筋柔軟性を有意な説明変数(共にオッズ比の有意確率p < 0.05)に持ち、Accuracy 70.7%、Sensitivity 80%、Specificity 69.2%、F値0.42だった。LBPPFは7歳以降で見られたので10歳以降で見られたLBPAFと比べて若年で発症し、また有病率は高かった。得られたモデルのSensitivity、Specificityは50%を超えており、LBPPF予測が可能であると考えられる。説明変数はLBP既往、大腿前面筋柔軟性増加であった。LBP既往があると椎間板が変性している可能性があり、LBPPF疼痛発生部位である脊柱後方の負担を増大させる可能性がある。さらに大腿前面筋柔軟性が増加すると、猫背様不良姿勢が生じ、脊柱後方への負担がさらに生じると思われる。脊柱後方には痛み受容器が多くあり、また小児の脊柱後方は骨密度が不均一でありストレスが集中する部位を持つため、LBPPFが生じると考えられる。一方LBPAFでは猫背様姿勢に加えて身長増加やそれに伴う大腿後面筋の柔軟性低下、運動活動量増加など複数の因子が重なり発症すると考えられる。またLBPPFは少ない原因で発症するのでLBPAFに比べて早期に発症する可能性があると考えられる。</p>

    FtsJ RNA 2′-O-methyltransferase 1 (FTSJ1) gene has been implicated in X-linked intellectual disability (XLID), but the molecular pathogenesis is unknown. We show that Ftsj1 is responsible for 2′-O-methylation of 11 species of cytosolic transfer RNAs (tRNAs) at the anticodon region, and these modifications are abolished in Ftsj1 knockout (KO) mice and XLID patient–derived cells. Loss of 2′-O-methylation in Ftsj1 KO mouse selectively reduced the steady-state level of tRNAPhe in the brain, resulting in a slow decoding at Phe codons. Ribosome profiling showed that translation efficiency is significantly reduced in a subset of genes that need to be efficiently translated to support synaptic organization and functions. Ftsj1 KO mice display immature synaptic morphology and aberrant synaptic plasticity, which are associated with anxiety-like and memory deficits. The data illuminate a fundamental role of tRNA modification in the brain through regulation of translation efficiency and provide mechanistic insights into FTSJ1-related XLID.

    We have developed a system in which humans and autonomous robots can collaborate with each other. In the system, robots often exhibit behaviors not intended by the humans. To avoid this situation, it is necessary to convey the humans' will to the robots. To do this, we have focused on electroencephalogram (EEG) error-related Potential (ErrP), using which we can detect the ErrP when a person observes an error by a robot. In our previous study, we recorded the ErrPs from subjects in a maze task when a robot moved in directions that the subjects did not intend. However, the mean epoch number of the ErrP per subject was small. It is necessary to collect a large number of data using a deep neural network. Generally, medical data and physiological data recorded from people are small. Few Shot Learning is necessary for a small number of data. Thus, Siamese neural networks have been proposed. In this study, we combined the Siamese deep neural network with a support vector machine to discriminate between EEG data with an error (ErrP) and that without an error. Consequently, we could obtain >70% of the maximum classification accuracy among subjects and 0.60 ± 0.22 of the area under curve.

    <p>The study aimed to determine whether and how the activation of the acetylcholine receptor affects epileptiform discharges in the CA3 region in a rat hippocampus. Picrotoxin (100 μM), a GABA<sub>A</sub> receptor antagonist, was applied to a hippocampal slice to induce epileptiform discharges. The effects of the cholinergic agonist, carbachol, on the discharges were examined at the several concentrations (1–30 μM). Carbachol had different impacts on epileptiform discharges at the different concentrations. Relatively low concentrations of carbachol (<10 μM) increased the frequency but decreased the amplitude of the discharges. At 10 μM, carbachol induced the discharges, including bursts of theta frequency oscillations. At 30 μM, carbachol could induce bursts of beta frequency oscillations instead of epileptiform discharges. The amplitudes of the oscillations were smaller than those of the discharges. Carbachol suppressed the evoked population EPSPs (pEPSPs) in a dose-dependent manner. These effects were blocked by the muscarinic cholinergic receptor antagonist atropine sulfate. The high level of muscarinic receptor activation can replace epileptiform discharges with theta or beta oscillation. These results suggest that the dose-dependent alternation of the acetylcholine receptor activation may provide the three different stages the epileptiform discharges, the bursts of theta oscillation, and the bursts of the beta oscillation.</p>

    There are various treatments for epilepsy which is caused by abnormal synchronized neuronal firing. But 10% of the epileptic patients is still intractable, and at that time epileptiform activities can be seen in brain. On the other hand, functional rhythm is also seen the brain. It contains theta, beta, and gamma rhythms. In the present study, we performed a basic research for studying about the relationship between epileptiform activities and beta rhythms which is related to memory and learning. Beta oscillation was induced by application cholinergic agent carbachol to replicate the beta oscillation in hippocampal slices. In addition, we induced epileptiform activities with the application of the inhibitory neuronal transmission blockers picrotoxin (PTX) and bicuculline (BIC) to induce ictal and interictal spikes. Final, after we induced beta oscillations with the application of carbachol, we added PTX or BIC to carbachol-induced beta oscillations. As the result, I revealed that ictal and interictal spikes were never seen while the slice was inducing beta oscillations. These results suggest that beta rhythms suppress the induction of epileptic discharges epilepsy. Suppressing these spikes are due to decrease EPSP by applications of carbachol, as the results, the rate of neuronal synchronizations that is the important of epilepsy mechanisms are decrease.

    This paper demonstrates a better classification performance of an ensemble classifier using a regularized linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI). The ensemble classifier with an LDA is sensitive to the lack of training data because covariance matrices are estimated imprecisely. One of the solution against the lack of training data is to employ a regularized LDA. Thus we employed the regularized LDA for the ensemble classifier of the P300-based BCI. The principal component analysis (PCA) was used for the dimension reduction. As a result, an ensemble regularized LDA classifier showed significantly better classification performance than an ensemble un-regularized LDA classifier. Therefore the proposed ensemble regularized LDA classifier is robust against the lack of training data. © 2013 IEEE.

    The daily behavior of the person is affected by the subjective preference. Recently the study on the electroencephalogram (EEG) which is related to the preference has been started. Most of the studies so far have been focus on the visual preference. The studies clarify that prefrontal theta and occipital gamma bands are involved in the preference. On the other hand, music has a relaxation effect, and can reduce our stress. Recently musical therapy is used for the functional training for dementia, and the people experiencing disability. The effect is maximized when they listen to the favorite music. Thus to know the individual's music preference is also important. In the present study, the music preference was studied using electroencephalogram (EEG). Five healthy males (23.5±0.5 years) participated in the experiment. They listened to the music EEG for 30-35 sec, thought for 10 sec, and then decided the preference in four levels. After the preference, there was a rest for 35 sec. A subject listened to twenty pieces in 5-8 genres. EEG was recorded throughout the experiment. It was analyzed using fast Fourier transform. The mean power levels of theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (12-30 Hz), and gamma (30-50 Hz) were calculated while the subject listened to the music, and while they thought the choice. In addition, cross-validation of the power levels in one dimension was done using the linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In the preference thinking period, the averaged power of the prefrontal theta band at "like" choice was higher than at "dislike" choice. The difference was not significant. On the other hand, both during listening to music and preference thinking period, the averaged power of the occipital gamma band tended to be higher at "dislike" choice than at "like" choice. The difference was not significant. The cross-validation result showed that the three highest correct answer rates were obtained using the occipital gamma, the prefrontal alpha, and the occipital gamma bands. Hence, the occipital gamma bands may participate in "like" and "dislike" emotion.

    Recently many youngsters suffer depression. The symptoms are autonomous negative thinking, misunderstanding of the systematic expectations, the schema for the depressions, the problems of rehabilitation, the issue for the lack of communications, and impediment of sleep-arousal cycle. New computer treatment method using computer games has been proposed. But a player does not know whether they are recovered or not, and he/she can't keep his/her motivation. In addition, the youngsters do not go to the hospital. There are some differences of electroencephalograms (EEG) between the healthy persons and the depression patients. In the present report, we have developed the self-mental rehabilitation system for the depression patients using 3D-RPG. The system sends EEG of the players to the doctors through internet, and saves it to database. We hope that the present self-mental rehabilitation system can be useful for many young depression patients.
