    Workers living with mental health illnesses are increasing due to job stress. Previous studies have identified intra-organizational communication as one of the job stressors. This study examined the correlation between intra-organizational communication and mental health illnesses in the workplace. Participants were recruited from Corporation A (N=283). Team Communication Interface Questionnaire (TCIQ) and Kessler 6 Scale (K6) were used to measure intra-organizational communication and mental health illnesses, respectively. TCIQ was used due to having good psychometric properties and for its unique ability to gauge each member’s impressions about their team. Results of the Pearson correlation coefficient indicated that there was a significant negative association between K6 score and total TCIQ score (R=-0.321, P<0.01). The correlation coefficients also reported significant negative associations (P<0.01) between K6 score and each item of TCIQ: mission recognition (-.280), information transmission (-.275), schedule management (-.284), and evaluation awareness (-.227). The results show that intra-organizational communication is related to mental health illnesses. Examining intra-organizational communication through TCIQ in the workplace may promote mental health and help achieve organizational goals more effectively.

  • Relationship between learning score in education and training support system and achievement test results at medical radiology technician school Reviewed

    This study aimed to assess the relationship of the learning score obtained with the web version of the education and training support system Key Words Meeting (KWM) in respect to the periodic examination results in a given subject of study and to the simulated examination results, on questions in national examinations for medical radiology technician radiation chemistry classes. The periodic examinations were taken in the second year by 68 students, and the simulated examinations were taken in the third year by 61 students. The correlation coefficient (ρ) between learning score and periodic examination results was 0.233 (p=0.055) and between learning score and radiochemistry simulated examination was 0.374 (p<0.01), thus showing significant positive correlation. The periodic examination result was found to correlate significantly with the sociality basic points (ρ=0.407) and additional points (ρ=0.261) of the learning score. Correlation of the radiochemistry result in the simulated examination was also found with respect to the sociality basic points (ρ=0.255) and additional points (ρ=0.294), to the submission basic points (ρ=0.298) and additional points (ρ=0.334), and to the continuous-learning basic points (ρ=0.315) and additional points (ρ =0.316), thus all aspects of learning score evaluation showed significant positive correlation. In the subject of study, the averages of the obtained learning score and periodic examination results score were respectively 89.7 and 78.3, and 7 students failed to attain 60 points in the periodic examination results. The seven underachievers included three who were higher than average in learning score but less than 60 in periodic examination results and four who were lower than average in learning score and less than 60 in periodic examination results. This indicates that observing the learning score, visualizing the individual learning processes, and ascertaining whether the student is motivated to learn and identifying the cause of underachievement can enable effectively focused consideration of underachievers. The quantification of learning activity of student leads to improve their ability and motivation of learning in an early stage, such as in the middle of lecture course.

    Teachers commonly prepare for classes by summarizing the learning materials in plain language and presenting them as keywords to the students. The web version of Key Words Meeting (KWM), an education and training support tool, is an interactive learning system that uses ICT to electronically gather data on students’ memory retention rates of keywords that teachers input into the system. In this study, the relationships between word counts, parts of speech, and memory retention rates were examined. Data was collected through KWM for an undergraduate engineering elective course from 2014 to 2018. Results showed that memory retention rates were higher when main keywords, which act as titles, had lower word counts and when sub-keywords, which supplement the main keywords, had higher word counts. Morphological analyses revealed that memory retention rates were higher when main keywords contained combinations of nouns and when sub-keywords contained combinations of parts of speech other than nouns. Results suggest that different combinations of parts of speech and word counts affect memory retention. Further research on the characteristics of teachers’ keywords that yield high memory retention rates may lead to improved learning and memory for students in classes.

    <p><i>Few studies have examined the claim that engaging in safety activities can contribute to the reduction of occupational accidents in the workplace. Maintenance and promotion of these activities are largely influenced by team communication about safety. Team Communication Interface Questionnaire (TCIQ) has been proposed to examine intra-organizational communication by asking members to share their impressions about their team. Derived from TCIQ, we have developed Safety Communication Interface Questionnaire (SCIQ) to measure impressions of safety in the workplace. In this study we conducted a questionnaire survey and workplace inspection for Company A, examined the reliability and validity of SCIQ, and evaluated safety activities from the viewpoint of safety communication. The 115 subjects had a mean age of 48.3 years and were recruited from the company's two branches. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to calculate the internal consistency coefficients of the items in SCIQ: risk prediction activity (0.764), near-miss activity (0.815), 4S activity (0.765), pointing and calling activity (0.807), and greeting movement (0.755). The results of this study demonstrate the reliability of SCIQ. </i><i> </i></p>

    <p>In order for children to grow in today's educational environment, they need to receive not only support from schools but also from their local community. Furthermore, improvement in information and communication technology (ICT) literacy is becoming a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. The purpose of this study is to create and consider the possibilities of a venue for non-formal education through a privately-run program utilizing ICT. Content of the non-formal education consisted of observance of rules as law-abiding citizens and topics related to local lifestyles and occupations in the community. Five members from the local area were designated as instructors for the classes. A total of 18 participants were recruited through flyer distribution. The program adapted a web version of Key Words Meeting (KWM), an education and training support system that can produce a visualization from the preparatory stages of the classes to the learning process after the classes. The effectiveness of the classes was evaluated based on the proportion of each keyword that was retained by the participants, as measured by KWM. Classes were held five times from September through November 2017 with 17 children participating in the first class, 15 in the second, 12 in the third, 14 in the fourth, and 7 in the fifth. The results indicated that there were capable members from the local area who could serve as instructors in the classes. Efforts to recruit the participants were affected by factors such as cooperation from local schools, the weather, and club activity schedules. In the classes, the proportions of each keyword retained by the participants came close to or exceeded 75%. The study presents the possibility of sustainable non-formal education through the development of various topics that are specific to the regional characteristics of the local community, as evidenced by the visualized data obtained from KWM.<i> </i></p>

    <p><i>Organization measures and improves intangible assets for sustainable development. TCI (Team Communication Interface) is a model that generalizes the organization's communication using the interface concept. This study examined the reliability and validity of TCIQ by conducting a questionnaire survey in Corporation A. A total of 330 people (average age=42.4 years) participated in the survey. The Cronbach’s α coefficients for the four interfaces of TCIQ were .933 (Mission recognition), .786 (Information transmission), .811 (Schedule management), and .907 (Evaluation awareness). Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient values between the four interfaces of TCIQ and three factors calculated from the BJSQ response values were from .256 to .459 (p<0.01). Results suggest that TCIQ has high reliability and criterion-related validity. TCIQ is able to identify differences in how members view their team, which is expected to be used for team development intervention. </i></p>

    <p><i>Accountability in educational institutions has become a widespread concern, leading to the need of assessment tools that could provide objective results for class improvements. The purpose of this study was to propose the use of an assessment methodology that measures the activities of students and teachers in classroom settings. Subjects were recruited from an elective course in the Graduate School of Engineering. Key Words Meeting </i><i><tt>（</tt></i><i>KWM</i><i><tt>）</tt></i><i> was used to assess the transmission situation of the keywords. Activities of the students and teachers were scored and termed “learning amount” and “guidance amount,” respectively. The average score of “learning amount” was 80.0 points </i><i><tt>（</tt></i><i>SD = 8.9</i><i><tt>）</tt></i><i> and the average score of “guidance amount” was 88.7 points </i><i><tt>（</tt></i><i>SD =1.4</i><i><tt>）</tt></i><i>. The largest difference in the scores of students arose from their activities related to feedback from the teachers. The teachers completed all the activities before and after class, however, there was a difference in the status of students’ transmission situations. From the scores of class activities, assessment criteria for students and teachers were identified. The results of this study may encourage students and teachers to engage in further activities before and after class, and provide a way to objectively assess both in class and out of class activities for concrete class improvements.</i><i> </i></p>

    <p><i>Training follow-up has been recognized as a vital component of effective corporate trainings. Proper implementation of follow-up require the trainers to determine what contents had been transmitted to the participants during the training. The purpose of this study was to quantify the transmission situation of the keywords that were utilized during the corporate training program. Subjects were recruited from two mental health-related trainings. The trainings were divided into one for managerial class and other for rank-and-file employees. Key Words Meeting (KWM) was used to assess the transmission situation of the keywords. The training contents were presented as plural sets of main keyword and sub keywords. Two indexes of transmission situations were proposed: 1) proportion of each keyword retained by participants attending the program and 2) proportion of keywords retained by individual participant. The results of this study may help trainers implement appropriate follow-up and assist with the evaluation of training programs. </i></p>

    （研究内容）本研究室の基幹テーマである、「包括的健康資源のためのソリューション群；Comprehensive Health Resources Integrated Solutions, CHRIS)と連携して、チーム・コミュニケーション・インタフェース（目標共有、情報伝達、時間管理、評価）のモデル構築から、評価尺度開発、教育支援までを包括的に取り組んでいます。また、様々な教育現場における教育支援ツールの開発を行っています。
    （応用可能な分野）チーム構築・活動・評価のコンサルティング、初期企業家教育、教育評価

    チーム内のコミュニケーション不全は業績不振はもちろんメンタルヘルスへの影響など、様々な問題を持っています。私たちが取り組んでいるチームコミュニケーションインタフェースを用いた評価尺度は、御社のチーム内のコミュンケーションの現状を、「教育により改善できる項目」で把握し、そのための教育方法から教育効果測定まで、課題発見から改善までを包括的に支援するソリューションを提供できると思います。
