    <p>This study investigates the real-time computation of a large-scaled spiking neural network using graphic processing units. A randomly coupled network comprising several hundred thousand spiking neurons was computed in real-time. We also developed an entorhinal-hippocampal neural network consisting of approximately 50,000 spiking neurons and implemented a mechanism to form place cells in the hippocampal network through the entorhinal cortex based on the direction of motion and velocity of a mobile robot. In an experiment using a real mobile robot, we confirmed that place cells were formed in the hippocampus while the robot moved through a square open field.</p>

    <p>Hippocampus integrates events and places information critical for episodic memory. Memory-based hippocampus-inspired model (MBHIM) is a hippocampus-inspired model suitable for VLSI implementation. This paper proposes an efficient spatial representation scheme for MBHIM with VLSI implementation. Each layer represents a space of a different size to represent and store spatial information at different resolutions. This scheme can achieve the representation of large spaces with high spatial resolutions, even when the number of memory cells per layer is limited. We conducted an experiment using a VLSI system of MBHIM to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.</p>

    This study proposes an entorhinal-hippocampal spiking neural network (SNN) encoding the position of self and other, and investigates an application to an observational T-maze task. On an observational T-maze task, the observer needs to represent the self-position and the position of the other in the brain. In the hippocampus, there are place cells that encode self-location in the environment, and some of them are joint place cells that encode the location of others as well. However, how joint place cells are formed is not yet understood. In the present study, we assume that object vector cells in entorhinal cortex encodes the distance and direction to others, and propose the entorhinal-hippocampal SNN that forms joint place cells by projections from place cells and object vector cells. Furthermore, the proposed SNN learns to move in the opposite direction of its companion at a T-junction based on the neural activity of joint place cells and rewarded signals. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed SNN can perform the observational T-maze task successfully through repeated trials.
