This paper presents issues and solutions in a simultaneous measurement of the radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI), differential mode (DM) and common mode (CM) currents. The current transformers (CTs) and the oscilloscope (OSC) connected with the coaxial cables are used to evaluate the currents flowing through the power cable selectively. In the high-frequency range above 30 MHz, the current amplitude is small, which reduces measurement accuracy due to the resolution of the measurement system. In addition, couplings between the equipment under test (EUT) and the measurement system are significant in the high-frequency range, which also deteriorates measurement reproducibility of the radiated EMI due to the coupling currents flowing through the coaxial cables. Thus, the simultaneous measurement system is constructed by using high-pass filters (HPFs) and RF amplifiers (AMPs) to increase the measurement sensitivity of the currents and by adding ferrite cores (FCs) and arranging the layout of the measurement equipment to improve measurement reproducibility of the radiated EMI. The effectiveness of the proposed measurement system was experimentally verified using a three-phase AC/DC/AC variable speed drive (VSD) system.

The issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) holds significant importance in the design of variable speed drives (VSDs). Even if the VSD is the source of radiated EMI due to the high-speed switching devices, the power cables are the main emission parts for the radiated EMI as antennas. The common-mode (CM) current of an output power cable of the VSD has been investigated as a radiation part. However, considering the radiation EMI, it is crucial to examine the CM current not only in the output power cable but also in the input power cable. This paper investigates the differential-mode (DM) and CM currents of input and output power cables of a three-phase AC/DC/AC VSD system using simultaneous time domain measurements to estimate the radiated EMI. The result demonstrated that the input and output power cables act as antennas, and the radiated EMI can be evaluated by considering the integrated CM currents of the input and output power cables, especially the comprised of the 3-phase wire and earth wires' CM current.

Change in Electric Power Consumption in Mongolia in 2020 and the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic 査読有り国際誌

This paper deals with the change in electric power (EP) consumption in Mongolia in 2020 based on data on the maximum and minimum EP consumption a day, provided by NPTG. The changes in EP consumption in Mongolia in detail as weekly or seasonal changes as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have not been clear, even though annual EP consumption was provided from the reports of the World Bank, IEA, and other international institutes as statistical data. Differences in the maximum average hourly and the minimum EP consumption in a day was 277 MWh (30.2%) and in the maximum and minimum daily EP consumption in 2020, which appeared in winter and summer, respectively, was 933 MWh (71.3%). Also, a 104-MWh (14.8%) drop was confirmed on special days like Naadam. To discuss the impact of COVID-19, the values of 2017 were used as a criterion for a year absent of a pandemic, and the stringency index, an indicator used to quantify the severity and stringency of government policies and measures, was introduced, and compared with the monthly EP consumption in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic decreased the EP consumption of 40 MWh (2 to 6%) except in December due to the free-electricity policy. The EP consumption showed the dependency of the stringency index, particularly a clear drop over 50 of the index values. Electric power demand (EPD) varies depending on weather conditions, social activity, industrialization, and so on. For reliable operation of the electric power system, including renewable energy (RE) sources, it is necessary to monitor the EPD for generation and weather conditions to forecast the EPD as well as the generation of the RE sources. Since there were few studies on EPD changes over time or with weather conditions in Mongolia, it is necessary to clarify the change in EPD and the relationship between the EPD and temperature that is representative of the weather condition for future monitoring of the EPD and the weather condition. The authors are also interested in identifying differences in EPD change between Mongolia and Japanese characteristics. As a result, the linear relation between EPD and temperature was seen in Mongolia, while 'U-shape' characteristics in Japan. Also, differences in electricity usage between summer and winter seasons were clearly seen as the term for premature dependence.

This paper deals with very steep rise time characteristics with pico-seconds of negative PD current pulse in SF6 gas and mineral oil by changing the electric utilization factor. The minimum rise time measured in mineral oil was 8.77 ps. Based on the measurement results, the frequency properties of PD-emitted EM waves in mineral oil and SF6 gas were discussed by modifying the PD current waveform with a Gaussian pulse from the viewpoint of their impact on 5G communications.

Switching operation of semiconductor devices used in power electronics equipment generates electromagnetic (EM) noise, which may cause a malfunction in around equipment. In addition, power electronics equipment must meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. However, it is difficult to design power electronics equipment with suppressing EM noise due to its complex structure. In order to clarify the radiated EM noise properties from power electronics equipment, this paper presents the polarization and reflection effects of the radiated EM noise and the directivities of an inverter unit based on the 10 m far-field measurements in the semi-anechoic chamber.

Lots of studies on SF6 alternative gases have been carried out to avoid global warming, and not only natural-origin gases excluding strong electronegative gases, but also new gas mixtures including C5-FK, and C4-FN, as strong electronegative gases with buffer gases such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, or air were investigated due to their good insulation performance and comparably low global warming potential (GWP). So far the authors have investigated partial discharge (PD) properties like PD current and PD-emitted electromagnetic (EM) waves of SF6/dry air mixtures at 0.1 MPa with changing the SF6 gas mixture ratio as well as with two antennas having the bandwidth of the UHF or VHF bands. It revealed that the peak to peak amplitude of the PD-emitted EM waves measured with the UHF band antenna increased with an increase in the SF6 mixing ratio while those with the VHF band antenna decreased. In this study, properties of PD current and PD-emitted EM waves of SF6/dry air mixture over 0.1MPa were investigated by changing the SF6 gas mixture ratio and with the UHF and VHF antennas, and compared with those at 0.1 MPa. As a result, PD current peak decreased with an increased in gas pressure and detection of PD-emitted EM waves became more difficult with increase in the gas pressure.

The mixture ratio dependence of critical reduced electric field strength (E/N)crit was introduced as insulation performance, and formulated considering synergy effect to compare the insulation performance between the gas mixtures.

In this study, the electromagnetic (EM) waves radiated by partial discharges from the electrode system placed in two types of silicone gels were measured with two different antennas with different bandwidths. The results showed that the EM waves radiated by partial discharge (PD) during electrical tree progression could be obtained in each gel, and that amplitude of the EM waves differed depending on the antenna type as well as the gel type. This result suggests that frequency bandwidth of the sensor or antenna should be selected to detect the EM waves radiated by PDs in gel insulator effectively.

Liquid insulators such as mineral oil and silicone oil have excellent cooling and insulation performance, but impurities, dissolved gases and/or moisture in the liquid are known to have a significant influence on insulation performance. So far, the authors have shown that partial discharge (PD) current waveforms in mineral oil differ significantly depending on degassing treatment condition and on positive and negative polarity by super high frequency-wideband measurement. In this paper, using aged mineral oil which was used in a distribution transformer over 48 years, difference in PD current waveforms between new and aged mineral oil and between mineral and silicone oils as difference in insulation oil type were investigated by the super high frequency-wideband measurement system, so-called “SHF_PDPW system” with a 33 GHz oscilloscope. In addition, PD-emitted electromagnetic (EM) waves in those oils were measured with an antenna with sensitivity in the UHF band, and differences in the polarity and relationship between PD current and PD-emitted EM waves were investigated from the viewpoint of applicability of the UHF method.

Liquid insulators have excellent cooling and insulation performance, but impurities and contaminants in the liquid or dissolved gases and moisture are known to have a significant influence on insulation performance. In this paper, using the Super High Frequency-wideband Partial Discharge (PD) current Pulse Waveform measurement system, “SHF_PDPW system”, that the authors have developed and applied to PD measurement in SF6 gas so far, PD current waveforms in mineral oil were investigated in detail. Differences in PD current waveforms due to degassing treatment condition of the mineral oil and polarity effect of applied voltage could be clearly clarified. These differences cannot be observed by ordinary oscilloscopes with analog bandwidths around 1 GHz, and are important findings to understand PD phenomena, which were first observed by the super-wideband measurements.

Radiated electromagnetic (EM) noise caused by fast-changing voltage and currents is one of the important issues for developing inverters. However, the complex structure of the inverter made it difficult to investigate its radiated EM noise. The source part, radiation part, and radiation property should be considered to predict the radiated EM noise of the inverter unit. This paper deals with the polarization and reflection properties of the simple dipole model based on EM theory and experimental results in the semi-anechoic chamber to explain the radiation property of EM noise from the inverter unit.

This paper deals with influences of SF6 gas mixture ratio on detection properties of partial discharge (PD)-emitted electromagnetic (EM) wave in the SF6/dry air mixtures with the UHF and the VHF antennas in view of future diagnostic technology for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) with new SF6 alternatives like C4-Fluoronitrile (C4-FN), C5-Fluoroketone (C5-KF) or CF3I gases used as an electronegative gas. The aim of this study is to clarify whether the UHF method for PD measurements is applicable in the new SF6 alternatives like the case in SF6.The authors selected SF6/dry air mixtures instead of such as C4-FN/dry air and C5-FN/dry air due to the difficulties of the safe handling of the gas mixtures in the university laboratory. As a basic research, properties of PD-emitted EM waves in SF6/dry air mixtures were investigated by changing the SF6 contents between 0 % and 30 %, as well as by using two different types of antennas for UHF and VHF bands.

As partial discharge (PD) diagnostic for GIS, the UHF method to detect PD-emitted electromagnetic (EM) wave in the UHF band has been applied due to several advantages like sensitivity and safety as a non-contact method. So far, there were researches on the UHF method, it has not been clear for propagation properties of PD-emitted EM wave in the GIS, especially for the three-phase encapsulated type GIS due to the difficulty to evaluate influence of high voltage conductor arrangement like triangle or straight arrangement. In this paper, focusing on the straight type arrangement of the three-phase encapsulated type GIS, the authors investigated propagation properties of EM wave experimentally with a model tank and simulated PD signal and numerically with FD-TD analysis, and then compared both results. As a result, good agreement on the amplitude of detected signal between them was found, so further discussion was performed using the FD-TD analysis with changing the defect position. The simulation results showed that amplitude of the sensor output depends on the defect position, which means that one can identify the defect position based on the relation of the sensor output among the sensors.

The ultra-high frequency (UHF) antennas are used as sensors to detect electromagnetic (EM) waves emitted from partial discharge (PD) in the high voltage insulation diagnostic field. However, the UHF band includes many communication and broadcasting frequencies, such as cellular phones and Wi-Fi. The authors have developed a multiple narrow-band antenna (MNB) to detect PD signal in the UHF band without radio communication noise that corresponds to several narrowband frequencies used for mobile phones and Wi-Fi. This study proposed the filtered multiple narrow band (FMNB) antenna, which consists of a multiple-strip monopole antenna and microstrip low pass filter (LPF, fC=2GHz) on an FR-4 substrate. The microstrip LPF improves the reduction of high-frequency noises without antenna size extension, especially 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi noise. The FMNB antenna was applied to detect the PD in SF6 gas under the Wi-Fi noise emitted from a commercial drone and compared with a standard Horn antenna (HA), one of the high sensitivity wide-band antenna. The experimental results demonstrate that the FMNB antenna is suitable for PD detection in the UHF method under noisy conditions.

Detection of discharge-emitted electromagnetic wave leaked from inside the microwave oven 査読有り

Microwave ovens (MOs) are commonly used for cooking and heating food; it uses microwaves with frequency in the 2.4 GHz band, which is one of the ISM band. However, discharge could occur inside the MO due to the formation of the high electric field by the microwaves when the tableware made of metal or decorated by metal paint, or when aluminum foil is placed inside a MO under operation. In addition, if there is food residue or food that generates flammable gas, the discharge may trigger severe ignition or combustion. Therefore, the discharge signal should be detected during the MO operation to avoid fires or accidents caused by the discharge. From this safety viewpoint, this paper described the detection properties of discharge-emitted electromagnetic (EM) waves leaked from inside the MO by using a Horn antenna placed outside the MO with a low pass filter (LPF) for eliminating the leaked microwaves. The light emission properties of the discharge, including ignition and combustion during the MO operation, were also investigated along with the discharge-emitted EM waves. As a result, it was confirmed that the discharge-emitted EM waves can be detected with the first light emission in all the tests by using the antenna with the LPF.
