This paper described PD phenomena in SF6 gas with the spatial-resolved spectroscopic measurement system. The results allow us to understand where and how PDs were generated and propagated near the tip of the needle electrode and also how difference the PD light emission properties were, among the test gases. We also discussed effects of N2 addition to SF6 gas on the PD phenomena to improve the detection of light emission information. © 2013 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper investigates the sensitivity of two UHF sensors of a disc-type measuring electrode and a loop-type measuring electrode embedded in an epoxy insulator for detecting partial discharges (PD) and for diagnosing gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The experimental results show that the disc-type electrode has a wide frequency range up to 8 (GHz), which is advantageous for detecting a particle on an enclosure. The results also show that the loop-type measuring electrode is more sensitive to a metallic particle on a conductor than the disc-type measuring electrode. These results confirm that both disc-type and loop-type measuring electrode are capable of detecting frequency components in the UHF range or in a higher frequency band up to 8 (GHz) when the different types of defect exist inside a GIS. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents the decomposition by-products of trifluro-iodo-methane and their relative proportions in the gas phase under the occurrence of partial discharge. The experiment was performed in the presence of water vapor from 250 to 400 ppm under a non-uniform electric field configuration. The experimental results reveal that the by-products of C2F6, C2F4, C2F5I with the amount of 1300, 200, and 55 (CH3I) ppm, respectively, were produced for a cumulative charge of 161 mC. Other by-products, such as C3F8, CHF3, C3F6 CH3I were obtained at less than 30 ppm C2F6 was the dominant gas by-product of trifluro-iodo-methane suffering partial discharge. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Due to the low biodegradability level of mineral oil and its susceptibility to the fire, palm oil was proposed as alternative insulating liquid. This paper discusses partial discharge (PD) in palm oil under sinusoidal voltages and the comparison with mineral oil. PD was generated using a needle-plane electrode configuration which is enable enhancing electric field at the needle tip. PD pulses were detected using RC detector and they were measured using a Computer-based partial discharge measurement system. The results showed that PD activities in both oils are similar. The PD was initiated at the negative polarity of applied voltage. The discharges took place in both polarity's of applied voltage with PD number was higher at negative one. Several discharges phenomena showed the presence of space charge which changed electric field and governed PD activities besides the main field introduced by voltage application.

It is important to detect decomposition of insulating gas SF6 caused by partial discharges for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). In the previous result, the author developed a novel partial discharges sensing using carbon nanotube (CNT) gas sensor. In recently, an application of high voltage DC for long distance electric power transmission has been often used in various countries as the interconnection system and overload demand. In this study we applied the CNT gas sensor to detect partial discharges generated by high voltage DC. There was polarity profile for DC compared AC discharges. It was found, response of the sensor in the case of negative discharges was much higher than positive discharges under the same experimental condition. And the decomposed gases for each case were identified by FT-IR spectroscopy. The result indicated absorption peaks correspond to SF4 and SOF2 of positive discharges was much higher than that of negative discharges. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper deals with partial discharge induced electromagnetic wave investigation on three-phase GIS using UHF method and the application of single-phase partial discharge monitoring device (PDM) on three-phase gas insulated switchgear (GIS). The PD source is a protrusion at different positions on the conductor or on the tank. Frequency and phase spectrums of EMW signals emitted by PD at different positions were observed. The most dominant frequency of EMW signal in three-phase GIS was estimated from the cutoff frequency (fc) formula for single-phase GIS. The main difference in frequency spectrum between three-phase and single-phase GIS was found to be the shift of fc to the lower value for three-phase GIS. The presence of three conductors can be considered as increase in an equivalent radius of three-phase conductor by a factor of 1.6 for this GIS model. The phase of PD phase pattern in the phase spectrum depended on the particle position. The PD sources on three-phase GIS were diagnosed by single-phase PDM device. The success rate of diagnosis results is low. The error is predicted to be caused by error in phase recognition of PD pattern. The change in phase shift setting of PD phase pattern in PDM device based on the phase angle of applied voltage at maximum electric field gave better diagnosis results.

The authors have studied insulation diagnostic technique of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) by UHF (ultra high frequency) method. In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of insulating spacer type (metal flange type (MT) or bush type (BT)) on the propagation properties of partial discharge (PD) induced electromagnetic (EM) wave in GIS with UHF method. Low pass filtering process for cutoff frequency of TE11 mode was used to eliminate the higher order mode above TE11 of detected signal. Results revealed that reduction of the magnitude of measured EM waveform by passing through spacers. The reduction was found to be not due to attenuation by the spacer, but mainly due to superimposition of reduced TE mode and TEM mode. Furthermore, the authors investigated relationship between the propagating EM wave in GIS and a leaked EM wave from a BT spacer. This result suggests that insulation diagnosis by a sensor placed outside of GIS could be carried out to detect the leaked EM wave through a BT spacer. © 2010 IEEE.
