To realize local production and consumption of Spatio-temporal data (STD), it is essential to address two key challenges: (1) maintaining data locality by retaining and distributing STD close to their generation area, and (2) enabling application execution on heterogeneous and resource-constrained devices through a lightweight and portable execution platform. To address these challenges, we developed a Floating Cyber-Physical System (F-CPS) that retains both STD and the functions required to process and use the STD within a specific area. In the F-CPS, the STD Retention System directly distributes STD from the generation location and maintains the STD within the target area, thereby ensuring data localization. Furthermore, to facilitate the execution of common applications across heterogeneous devices, we designed a compact and portable application execution platform based on the WebAssembly (Wasm). In this paper, we describe the validation of the feasibility of the F-CPS platform through an integrated experimental evaluation using environmental information. The experiment demonstrated that the F-CPS enables (1) area-based retention of STD and (2) execution of data-processing functions on Wasm containers. The experimental results confirmed that the F-CPS can achieve local production and consumption of environmental data, thereby verifying the effectiveness of this platform.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation services are expected to be a part of next-generation communication infrastructure. In LEO satellite communications, handover is required to switch communications between satellites and ground stations or terminals, which causes communication breakdown. These communication disruptions affect congestion control in transport protocols, leading to degradation of their performance. To address this degradation, congestion controls tailored for LEO satellites, such as StarQUIC, SatPipe, and TCP LEO, have been proposed. However, comprehensive evaluations of these congestion controls on a real LEO satellite network cannot be found, and evaluations are desired. To this end, this paper compares these LEO satellite congestion controls with one of major LEO satellite communication services, Starlink, evaluating them based on throughput, retransmissions, latencies, and file download time. The evaluation results have shown that TCP LEO employing transmission freeze during handover has shown the best throughput, the minimum latencies, and the shortest download time. Regarding retransmissions, SatPipe has achieved the lowest number of retransmissions.

The demand for low-cost wireless LAN deployment is increasing in indoor networks. However, in indoor environments, extending wireless LAN coverage across obstacles and complex layouts remains difficult. To address this issue, we aim to expand wireless LAN coverage by using the interior of metal pipes in buildings as radio-wave propagation paths. Since actual pipe systems often contain non-metallic sections, detailed performance evaluation under such mixed conditions is essential. This paper investigates communication performance in the presence of non-metallic segments through practical experiments using the IEEE 802.11 wireless standard, and discusses prospects for developing wireless network systems based on the results.

In 5G networks, users require high-quality services for a wide range of applications. However, conventional QoS control mechanisms do not reflect the quality actually experienced by end users in network management. This study proposes a stress-aware networking system for Beyond 5G environment utilizing user’s stress level data collected from wearable devices. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed system using free5GC. The evaluation demonstrated that performance variations among network slices influence video quality. These results indicate that dynamic network slice switching based on user stress levels has the potential to achieve QoE enhancement for users.

A Floating Cyber-Physical System (F-CPS) has been proposed to facilitate the flexible use of Spatio-Temporal Data (STD) by retaining it within a specific area where it is generated. We have developed a Spatio-Temporal Data Retention System (STD-RS) that efficiently disseminates STD within an F-CPS by using broadcast communication. Our previous research proposed a transmission control method for outdoor environments based on neighboring node density. However, for many real-world services, STD-RS must also operate in indoor environments. This study proposes and experimentally evaluates a new transmission control method tailored for indoor environments.

Starlink by SpaceX is a promising Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation service. However, communications over Starlink are disrupted periodically due to handover at the fixed timings of 12th, 27th, 42nd, and 57th seconds for each minute. This periodic handover incurs unnecessary retransmissions, which place a burden on the network and degrade TCP performance. In order to overcome this degradation, this paper proposes a feasible and LEO satellite-friendly TCP congestion control. Our proposal has two main strategies: 1) transmission freeze and 2) cwnd freeze during handover. These strategies are applied to CUBIC and BBRv1 and implemented as a kernel module, making them deployable in the wild. In the real network with Starlink, our proposal dramatically reduced retransmissions and is thus LEO satellite-friendly. Our proposal also improves throughput and file downloading time.

Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) provides long-range, energy-efficient communication for IoT devices. Previous studies have shown that the IP2LoRa module enables TCP/IP communication over Private LoRa, one of the LPWA technologies. Dynamic modification of their transmission control is difficult because TCP and UDP are implemented in kernel space. To solve this issue, we utilize QUIC, a new transport protocol implemented in user space, to enable communication over Private LoRa using IP2LoRa, and evaluate its performance. Preliminary experiments revealed that packet loss inevitably occurs during the handshake phase due to the half-duplex nature of LoRa communication, resulting in performance degradation. To address this issue, this study proposes an adaptive delayed ACK strategy that delays ACK transmission during the handshake and then sends back multiple ACKs in batches. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments using actual equipment. Experimental results show that the proposed method eliminates packet loss during the handshake and shortens the communication time by about 50%.

Underwater RF communication suffers from unstable links and limited transmission range, which poses significant challenges for end-to-end data delivery in Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs). To address this, we propose a redundant packet assignment method that estimates packet loss based on received signal strength(RSS) and dynamically adjusts the redundancy level using Reed–Solomon coding. Each node periodically transmits beacons, and RSS values are propagated through the network to estimate the minimum signal strength toward the destination. Based on this, the source node determines the number of redundant packets to attach. We implemented the method on Raspberry Pi devices and evaluated its effectiveness in a land-based experimental environment that assumes underwater conditions by inducing packet loss at defined RSS thresholds. The results show that the proposed method improves packet delivery ratios under varying link qualities and uses fewer packets than fixed-redundancy schemes when possible. These results suggest that RSS-based redundancy control can enhance the robustness and efficiency of DTN communication in underwater RF environments.

This study proposes a system for constructing and operating information infrastructure in evacuation shelters during disasters using satellite constel-lation services, particularly Starlink. The proposed system comprises three core functions: communication optimization, network status monitoring, and evacuation shelter condition monitoring. We developed a prototype "Communication Box" to simplify the deployment, featuring a Raspberry Pi-based Wi-Fi router with a touchscreen display.
The system enables the real-time visualization of Starlink connectivity, communication perfor-mance metrics, and the operational status of evacuation sites. To monitor evacuation shelter activities while maintaining privacy, we evaluated three technologies: web cameras, depth sensors, and Wi-Fi received signal strength indicator-based methods. Experimental results demonstrate that modern TCP algorithms, such as BBR, outperform traditional algorithms re-garding satellite-induced latency and variability. We discuss the implemen-tation challenges and propose methods to mitigate Starlink's handover dis-ruptions through transport-layer tuning and packet buffering.

With the spread of the Internet, a wide variety of applications are communicating with each other. Active Queue Management (AQM) has long been studied, but recent advances in programmable data planes have facilitated its implementation and consequently revitalized research in AQM. MTQ/QTL are AQM implementations evaluated in P4 networks; however, these algorithms suffer from fairness issues when multiple flows compete along the same path. To address this problem, we propose the Multi-Queue MTQ/QTL method, which leverages multi-queueing and assigns queues based on whether a flow has experienced queueing delays, with the aim of improving per-flow fairness.

Congestion control for transport protocols affects end to end communication quality. Two congestion control algorithms (CCAs) have been mainstream in transport protocols: one is CUBIC, a standard feature in Windows OS and Linux OS, and the other is BBR, developed by Google. Previous studies have reported that when these different CCAs compete, the performance of each communication flow becomes unfair depending on the environment of intermediate devices. Therefore, in this study, we propose a method to identify the type of CCA in intermediate devices and perform different relay controls for each CCA using Programmable Data-Plane Network (PDPN). This research aims to improve the overall communication performance of the network and the fairness among flows.

In modern society, where labor shortages are becoming increasingly severe, there is a growing demand for efficient monitoring and inspection operations that can reduce the need for human labor. As a result, autonomous robotic systems have gained significant attention, with many companies and local governments actively conducting experiments and trials. However, relying on wireless communication for robot operations presents challenges in terms of real-time performance and communication stability, due to limitations in communication range and bandwidth. In this study, we utilize wireless LAN standards operating across three frequency bands-920 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5 GHz-to deploy autonomous mobile robots. Based on throughput and RSSI measurements, we propose a robot monitoring system that ensures efficient and reliable data transmission by dynamically switching wireless interface and optimizing video methods.

The rapid advancement in the use of IoT devices through digitalization is driving the development of network environments across various settings. In particular, the demand for wireless LANs in building networks is increasing due to their low installation and operational costs. Nevertheless, a single access point often struggles to provide full indoor coverage due to structural obstructions such as walls. Therefore, this paper proposes a new network system that utilizes the interior of metal pipes, which are part of existing building infrastructure, as radio wave propagation paths. This aims to expand communication coverages within buildings and establish a highly convenient wireless LAN network. However, communication using metal pipes is expected to exhibit unique characteristics compared to open-space communication because of reflections and diffractions, necessitating a detailed performance evaluation. In this paper, we evaluate the communication performance in-metal-pipe of IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN with different frequency bands through practical experiments. The experimental results provide insights into wireless network system design by demonstrating the communication stability of various wireless LAN configurations through RSSI measurements.

Driving the next wave of connectivity, with 5G and soon 6G, the satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) will become an important part of global coverage. The use of LoRa (Long Range) technology has been an emerging choice especially in CubeSat with limited power and space. Even though LoRa communication is robust against moderate Doppler, for low-earth orbit satellite communication with varying conditions, the limitation of successful communication persists. This paper investigates adaptive LoRa parameter configurations to enhance transmission success rates in satellite IoT communication systems. The proposed approach dynamically adjusts the spreading factor (SF) and bandwidth settings based on the elevation angles of the satellite and its Doppler shifts. A 30-day MATLAB simulation was conducted to emulate satellite passes, ensuring comprehensive coverage of typical sun-synchronous revisit cycle. Performance evaluation considered SF values of 7 to 12 and bandwidths of 31.25 kHz,62.5 kHz, and 125 kHz. The results demonstrate that bandwidth selection significantly influences communication reliability and emphasize the importance of adaptive parameter strategies in mitigating dynamic communication challenges for LoRa-based satellite IoT systems.

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite Internet services, such as Starlink, are becoming essential for communication in disaster-hit or infrastructure-limited regions. However, frequent inter-satellite handovers in Starlink often cause temporary disruptions, latency spikes, and packet loss. To address this, we propose StarUDP, a kernel-level solution that predicts handover timing to stabilize UDP communication. Real-world experiments demonstrate improved communication stability and reduced packet loss.

Video streaming makes most of Internet traffic nowadays, with most video applications transported over Hypertext Transfer Protocol/Transmission Control Protocol (HTTP/TCP). Being the predominant transport protocol, TCP stack performance in transporting video streams plays an important role, especially with regard to MultiPath Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) and multiple client device interfaces currently available. One overlooked aspect of multipath transport is the management of all possible paths between sender and receiver endpoints. In this paper, we study the usage of all possible paths created by MPTCP vis a vis video streaming performance on wired networking environments. We show that a fullmesh path usage may result in degraded video streaming performance due to common bottlenecks between paths under a simple (default) path scheduler. We then propose a bottleneck aware path scheduler, and show its superior performance on various multipath scenarios. Our results cover both Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip (BBR) propagation time TCP variant, as well as CUBIC variant in transporting video streams over wired networks. We use network performance level, as well as video quality level metrics to characterize quality of video streaming over TCP variants.

There are few IP unreachable areas outside the Internet coverage by terrestrial or wired link. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations may cover such IP unreachable areas. Starlink by SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.), which is a major LEO satellite constellation service, is reported to disrupt communication at the fixed timing due to handover periodically. It is, however, still unclear how periodic communication breakdowns occur and how they affect traditional transport protocols such as TCP and UDP. This paper confirms the periodic communication breakdowns of Starlink and evaluates how TCP and UDP are affected. We have confirmed that handover surely occurs at the fixed interval of 15 seconds and the fixed timing of 12, 27, 42, and 57 seconds for each minute due to handover. We then observed that handover times ranged from 139 ms to 384 ms, which is longer than previously reported. In addition, Starlink may buffer or retransmit packets somewhere in its network, and some packet losses may be avoided.

The widespread adoption of IoT devices has led to increased sensor data. Among the data, we defined spatiotemporal data (STD) as data that depends on both time and space. We proposed a spatiotemporal data retention system (STD-RS) that uses vehicles to retain and utilize STD within a specific spatial area. However, in STD-RS, errors in vehicle location information can cause data to be transmitted outside the target area. Previously, we proposed a method to detect abnormal vehicles by learning the distance and received signal strength indication (RSSI) of the vehicle and then confirmed that the method can detect abnormal vehicles with an accuracy of approximately 80%. However, the previous method did not consider vehicles that cannot generate features for learning in this paper. Moreover, as the evaluation was conducted in a single (ideal) environment only, the validation of effectiveness in practical environments remains. In this study, we use the sufficiency rate of data necessary for feature generation as an evaluation metric and evaluate how the spatial and quantitative changes in the combination of features for learning impact the sufficiency rate and detection accuracy under practical environments. The simulation evaluation results revealed the factors that affected the sufficiency rate and demonstrated that using the long-term spatial variation of RSSI as a feature improves the detection accuracy in any environment.

In TCP/IP, there are various types of congestion control algorithms, such as CUBIC and Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR). When flows using CUBIC and BBR share a bottleneck link, it has been reported that fairness decreases with the buffer size of the relay node on the bottleneck link. To improve fairness in these circumstances, we have previously proposed a method assigning each congestion control algorithm a separate buffer at the relay node using a programmable data plane. We have also proposed a packet scheduling method, Fair Queuing with Holding Time (FQ-HT), that allows relay nodes to send packets fairly from multiple buffers by setting an appropriate holding time. The appropriate holding time depends on the bandwidth of the bottleneck link and the buffer size of the relay node. However, if the holding time is not set appropriately, the fairness may not be improved or the total throughput may be reduced. In this paper, we propose Fair Queuing with Variable Holding Time (FQ-VHT), which automatically sets the appropriate holding time based on the difference in the number of send packets between the buffers. Emulation experiments showed that FQ-VHT can set an appropriate holding time based on network conditions.

This paper proposes an enhancement for the B5G mobile testbed environment that enables evaluations of the nonterrestrial networks (NTNs) -based systems. In the proposed evaluation environment, harmonizations with NTN and the terrestrial mobile systems are realized by using the reconfigurable testbed facilities that are constructed to evaluate the future possible advancement on the current L5G compliant mobile systems. The proposed NTN harmonized B5G mobile system provides an expanded C-Plane functions by exploiting the NTN’s inherent advantages of service continuity, ubiquity and scalability thereby further enhances the performances of the conventional terrestrial mobile systems. This paper also reports on the experimental results that are obtained on the NICT developed B5G/IoT testbed with high reliability and high elasticity. The experimental results confirm that the proposed NTN harmonized B5G mobile systems provide system performance of both throughput and RTT equivalent to the conventional terrestrial mobile systems without serious degradations owing to such assumed expanded C-Plane functions.

The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology with satellite communications has reformed global connectivity, especially in remote regions that lack terrestrial infrastructure. Recent advancements in optimizing LoRa parameters for satellite-based IoT communications have boosted research in this field. Building on this foundation, the MicroOrbiter-1 satellite developed by MicroOrbiter Inc. in collaboration with the Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) enhances LoRa-based IoT capabilities in a 1U CubeSat platform. This paper presents the in-orbit performance evaluation of the MicroOrbiter-1 satellite’s LoRa-based communication system on the 920 MHz frequency band with three Ground Sensor Terminals (GST) located in Kyutech (Japan), Rancabungur (Indonesia) and Vermont (USA). Key performance metrics such as Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), Spreading Factor, and transmission errors, were analyzed across these locations. The results demonstrated the range of -112 dBm to -127 dBm signal strength for successful communication at low spreading factors. Temporal analysis was conducted using the System Tool Kit to categorize the data received from each terminal. While facing the challenges of power limitation and the lack of an attitude control determination system, the findings in the in-orbit performance analysis of the MicroOrbiter-1 satellite provide valuable insights for optimizing LoRa communication for future satellite missions, especially for CubeSats.

Video streaming makes most of Internet traffic nowadays, being transported over Hypertext Transfer Protocol/Transmission Control Protocol (HTTP/TCP). Being the pre-dominant transport protocol, TCP stack performance in transporting video streams has become paramount, specially with regard to MultiPath Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) innovation and multiple client device interfaces currently available. In this paper, we evaluate video streaming hand-off performance via cellular and LEO links. Such scenario is commonplace in geographical areas where cellular communication is unreliable, such as disaster and conflict torn situations. We provide an extensive analysis of Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) TCP variant, as well as CUBIC when handing off video streams between terrestrial cellular network (5G) and LEO (Starlink) access networks. We use network performance level, as well video quality level metrics to characterize quality of video streaming over TCP variants.

A wide variety of congestion control algorithms have been developed for the transport protocol of TCP/IP. A related study revealed that the communication performance becomes unfair depending on the buffer length of switches or routers in the end-to-end path when communication flows using CUBIC TCP and Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) compete with each other. Therefore, we propose the fairness improvement method between different types of congestion control in the programmable network by using P4 programming. The proposed method provides multiple queues to each congestion control in the switches or the routers for relaying. The proposed method then assigns incoming TCP flows to those queues for each congestion control algorithm. The congestion control algorithm is determined by P4, which implements a programmable data plane. Three types of packet scheduling are used to ensure fairness when sending packets. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method using the network emulator “mininet” and the communication performance when the queue length of the relaying switch.

Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) is expected to be a communication technology suitable for the Internet of Things (IoT) due to its features, such as low power consumption, low cost, and long-distance transmission. Since LoRa communication has a trade-off between communication range and transmission rate, its communication performance is inherently varied depending on the surrounding environment. Therefore, in the previous study, we proposed a dynamic parameter control method based on beacon reception characteristics to fixed nodes to provide stable and efficient communication and evaluated its effectiveness. However, since the communication environment for mobile nodes is constantly changing, that method is challenging to contribute to performance improvement for mobile nodes. This paper proposes a dynamic transmission parameter control method for mobile terminal with LoRa communication. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated from the real experiments.

To promote local production and consumption of Spatio-Temporal Data (STD), we have proposed a Floating Cyber-Physical System (F-CPS) that retains STD and functions (applications) to process and use the STD within a specific area. The F-CPS designed the functions to execute common applications on various types of devices, aiming to accelerate the effective use of STDs. Therefore, the function distributed within the area should be small, and an execution platform for the function does not depend on hardware and operating systems. Furthermore, there is a need for a system to recognize available functions to new users entering the area and deliver them appropriately. In this paper, we propose (1) a compact and portable application execution platform using WebAssembly, and (2) a function Retention System based on the MEC collaborative application delivery method. We evaluate the process of the application execution platform and delivery method in our proposed system using actual equipment. The result of the verification revealed that even when multiple devices retrieve an application simultaneously, the execution of the application could be completed within 2 seconds.

TCP congestion control uses end-to-end delay and packet discard information to control the transmission rate. In the wireless LAN, there is a time lag between TCP congestion control and the transmission rate control of the wireless LAN interfaces, and there is no coordination between the respective controls. Thus, congestion control corresponding to the current state of the wireless network can be achieved by shortening this time lag. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to control the congestion window by detecting changes in the transmission rate of the wireless LAN interfaces. Our proposed method enables to control congestion windows size by using data link layer information, instead of using only transport layer information. This paper verified the effectiveness of the proposed method by network simulator ns-3.40.

The demand for wireless LAN is increasing in network construction within buildings because it has low installation and operational costs. However, it is difficult for a single access point to cover the entire indoor area with wireless communication due to the building structure or walls’ obstruction. Therefore, we focus on the metal pipes installed throughout the building and aim to utilize them as radio propagation paths to construct a wireless LAN network. Communication using metal pipes is expected to exhibit different characteristics from communication in open space because of reflections and diffractions, necessitating a detailed performance evaluation. This paper evaluates the communication performance of IEEE 802.11ax wireless LAN within metal pipes through simulations and practical experiments.

With the advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, various types of IoT data are being generated. Among these are spatio-temporal data (STD), which are related to specific times and locations, and STD-RS, which uses vehicles to distribute these data. However, there is a risk of vehicles with location errors distributing data outside the designated area. Previous research proposed a system using a multi-layered blockchain to detect and audit such vehicles, which has been validated through simulations but not yet in real-world settings. This study implements this detection and audit mechanism using smart contracts and a multi-layered blockchain in a real-world setting. We evaluate performance on actual devices, using configurations that closely resemble the simulations. Our method involves storing STD hash values and area information in a smart contract to identify malfunctioning vehicles. To implement this, we utilized Ethereum for smart contract deployment, with Geth as the CUI Ethereum node, and the web3.js library in Node.js for writing to Ethereum blocks. Additionally, we employed Solidity to develop the smart contracts and GraphQL to specify the search range within the blockchain. The results show that as the scale of the data increases, the search time also increases, with real-world implementation reflecting similar characteristics to simulations. Furthermore, we confirmed that the rate of increase in search time per unit of data scale differs between simulations and real-world scenarios due to application variance. The implementation results show linearly increasing search time per data size, concluding equivalent scalability to the simulation.

Some types of Internet of Things data depend on the time and location at which they were generated. We refer to such data as spatio-temporal data (STD). To effectively utilize STD, we previously proposed an STD retention system called STD-RS that uses vehicles to retain STD within a specific area. In STD-RS, vehicles autonomously operate based on their location information. However, location information errors at vehicle nodes may lead to STD being distributed outside the target area. This could lead to an increase in packet loss and pose the risk of information leakage. Therefore, this study proposes a method for detecting vehicles with location information errors based on the attenuation of signal strength with distance. Specifically, the distance to vehicle nodes and the received signal strength obtained during STD distribution are collected and stored on multi-access edge computing servers. Machine learning is then applied to this information for detection. Simulations demonstrate that vehicles with location information errors can be detected with an accuracy of approximately 80%.

A Floating Cyber Physical System (F-CPS) has been proposed as a region specfic Cyber Physical System (CPS). F-CPS promotes flexible data utilization by retaining Spatio-Temporal Data (STD), which depends on the location and time of data generation, within a specific area. We have proposed a Spatio-Temporal Data Retention System (STD-RS) to deliver STD in the F-CPS. In our previous studies, we assumed that nodes controlled data transmission based on GPS information in outdoor environments. However, F-CPS is also assumed for data retention in indoor environments. In this study, we propose a data transfer control method based on the received signal strength indicator to check its location information without using GPS. Additionally, we conducted experiments in a real environment and demonstrated that the proposed method effectively operates as an STD-RS in indoor environment.

Mobile communication networks are expanding. However, when natural disasters happen and communication equipment is damaged, service disruptions can occur and many people cannot use the network. When such disasters happen, it is possible to use long-distance wireless networks such as Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks or satellite communication networks as alternative routes. This study focuses on the network between the Beyond 5G core network and the remote host and proposes a resilient network that uses the open RAN (O-RAN) architecture to utilize available communication networks during failures. Additionally, we propose a traffic steering method based on the types of user devices to effectively use available alternative routes and alleviate QoS degradation for users. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed system through simulations. The simulation results showed that the proposed methods increase the satisfaction rate of flows' requirements.

Low-power wide-area (LPWA) is a major communicaiton technology used in the Internet of Things (Io‘I’), Major sensor networks are constructed using original protocols specific to each LPWA standard and cannot communicate directly with devices connected to the Internet. To enhance the convenience of devices using LPWA, it is necessary to improve their interop-erability with Internet applications with TCP/IP. Previous study have enabled Single-hop TCP/IP communication over Private LoRa. In this study, we construct a multi-hop environment for TCP/IP communication over Private LoRa, and evaluate its performance using both UDP and TCP communication. Previous research has enabled one-to-one communication using UDP and TCP over a Private LoRa interface, an LPWA technology. This study leverages the characteristics of LPWA for ultra-long-distance transmission and implements TCP/IP communication in a multi-hop environment. This paper evaluates the performance of UDP and TCP on actual devices.

IoT-based acoustic data collection systems have been proposed for detecting anomalies in mechanical equipment. However, traditional systems using audible sound do not work well due to interference from various sound sources. To solve this problem, we have previously proposed an ultrasonic data collection system, but the clear and high-quality sound required for anomaly detection results in an increase in data volume. This paper proposes a method for extracting only the necessary frequency band based on the periodicity of the target signal, aiming to reduce the amount of data. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed method efficiently determines the appropriate frequency band in which the characteristics of the target equipment appear, thereby enabling the amount of data to be reduced by more than 45%.

QUIC is a transport protocol that adds congestion control, retransmission control, and TLS to UDP. QUIC can use the same congestion control algorithms as TCP. In previous work, we have shown that communication performance becomes unfair concerning the buffer size of the shared bottleneck link of two flows, one using CUBIC and the other BBR congestion control algorithms within QUIC. In this study, we improve the communication fairness performance at different bottleneck link buffer sizes by using Round Trip Time (RTT) and Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) to regulate congestion control aggressiveness when CUBIC and BBR compete within QUIC through actual experiments.

Video streaming makes most of Internet traffic nowadays, being transported over Hypertext Transfer Protocol/Transmission Control Protocol (HTTP/TCP). Being the predominant transport protocol, TCP stack performance in transporting video streams has become paramount, specially with regard to MultiPath Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) innovation and multiple client device interfaces currently available. Recently, Low Orbit Satellite networks have become available as a way to cover remote locations where cellular coverage is spotty at best with Internet access. In this paper, we evaluate video streaming performance via cellular and LEO links. Such scenario is commonplace in geographical areas where cellular communication is unreliable, such as disaster and conflict torn situations. We provide an extensive analysis of Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) TCP variant, as well as CUBIC when transporting video streams over terrestrial cellular network (LTE) and LEO (Starlink) access networks. We use network performance level, as well video quality level metrics to characterize quality of multipath video streaming over TCP variants.

Cyber Physical System (CPS) is a system that accumulates information from physical space, analyzes them in cyberspace, and then feeds back the results. We aim to realize a Floating Cyber Physical System (F-CPS), a regionally distributed CPS. We have proposed a large-capacity spatio-temporal data retention system for delivering data and function (application) in the F-CPS. In a previous work, we proposed a data completeness-aware transmission control and evaluated it by simulation. However, considering the movement of obstacles and fluctuation of radio waves in the real environment, packet loss occurs frequently. Thereby, the system may not be able to have complete data and may not function. In this paper, we proposed a method to recover missing data using redundant packets and evaluated its impact on the entire system by testing it with actual equipment.

With the widespread Internet technologies, malware damage also spreads worldwide, making it necessary to address these issues urgently. In some cases, malware-infected terminals use the Domain Name System (DNS) when communicating with the Command and Control (C&C) servers to obtain information for attacks. The previous malware detection focuses on the DNS communication history of malware-infected terminals. However, this method has the problem of poor accuracy in detecting malicious domains when the analysis data is small. This paper proposes a malicious domain detection with the following improvements. The first improvement is adding information on response and time. The second improvement is shortening the query domain names to primary domain names. Further, the proposed method showed improvement in the experiment.

IEEE 802.11ah (11ah) is a wireless LAN standard using the 920 MHz band and is expected to be used in the IoT field as one of the Low Power Wide Areas (LPWAs). Many LPWAs share the 920 MHz band and are characterized by low transmission rates but long-range communication. Therefore, there is a high possibility of contending communication in the real-world environment. In this study, we clarify the characteristics of contending communications between 11ah and LoRa according to evaluating the performance using real devices.

LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) is expected to be a communication technology suitable for the Internet of Things (loT) because of its features. Since LoRa communication has a trade-off between communication range and transmission rate, performance is inherently varied depending on the surrounding environment. Therefore, to achieve stable and efficient communication performance, it is necessary to set appropriate parameters for LoRa depending on the communication environment between the base station and the terminal. We here propose a method for dynamic control of parameter settings based on reception statistics of beacons. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated from the real experiments.

Spatio-temporal aware IoT applications need to deliver the Spatio-Temporal Data (STD), which depends on geographic location and time, to the users in real-time. We have proposed the STD retention system using crowds of vehicles to promote the immediate distribution and utilization of STDs in geographical proximity to the user. However, when the system retains a Large-size STD (LSTD) consisting of multiple packets such as videos and photos, the packet loss due to channel collisions should be suppressed for effective retention of an LSTD. In this paper, we propose a complementary data transmission control method with collision avoidance for LSTD retention and clarify the effectiveness of our proposed method by simulation.

QUIC is a secure, general-purpose transport protocol using congestion and retransmission controls on User Datagram Protocol (UDP). QUIC can use the same congestion control algorithms as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Thus, when communication between multiple terminals using QUIC competes, the performance of each terminal depends on the congestion control algorithm adopted by the terminal. In related works, the communication performance was evaluated by simulation when both CUBIC and BBR flows competed in TCP, and the results showed that each communication performance became unfair with the buffer size of the shared bottleneck link. In this study, we verify the communication performance at different bottleneck link buffer sizes when BBR and CUBIC compete through actual experiments.

IoT data includes Spatio-temporal data (STD) that is needed only at a specific time and place. In our previous research, we have proposed the STD data retention system (STD-RS), aiming to construct a novel architecture for STD distributing in a retention area by vehicles. However, since vehicles may distribute the STD in unexpected locations due to GPS errors or malicious behavior in a real environment. Therefore, we propose a reliability audit mechanism based on multi-layered blockchain managing and analyzing the history of STD distribution and vehicles' behavior in each retention area. Through simulation experiment, we demonstrated that our mechanism detects the malfunction of STD-RS effectively.

Low-power wide-area (LPWA) is a major communication technology used in the Internet of Things (IoT). However, since LPWA does not conform to the TCP/IP protocol stack and employs its own unique protocol, it is difficult for sensors equipped with LPWA I/F to connect to the Internet directly. In the present study, to realize general TCP/IP communication on LPWA networks, we construct a TCP/IP network over Private LoRa, and evaluate its communication performance. Moreover, we verify the feasibility of TCP/IP communication over LoRa by using a popular Internet application.

Some specific services for Internet of Things, such as real-time map and providing local weather information, depend strongly on geographical time and location. We refer to the data for such service as spatio-temporal data (STD). When STD is used in a query response system similar to conventional Internet services, users not only need to acquire data actively as required, they must also have functions for retrieving data available STD. Therefore, we propose an STD retention system that uses vehicles as information hubs (InfoHubs) for disseminating and retaining the data in a specific area. In our system, InfoHubs diffuse, maintain, and advertise STD over places and times where the STD are strongly dependent, thereby allowing users to receive such data passively within the specific area. Additionally, because STD are associated with a particular space, the system can reduce search costs. We also propose an adaptive transmission control method that each vehicle effectively operates its wireless resources autonomously and STD are retained and distributed efficiently. Finally, we evaluated our proposed method using simulations and clarified that our proposed system is capable of achieving a coverage rate of nearly 100% for STD while reducing the number of data transmissions compared to existing systems.

With the development and spread of IoT technology, various devices have been connected to networks. Some data generated from IoT devices depends on geographical location and time (Spatio-Temporal Data). The realization of an architecture for "local production and consumption of STDs" can contribute to location-dependent applications, and therefore we have proposed the STD retention system with vehicles. In our previous study, the vehicle controlled the data transmission probability according to the density of the neighboring vehicles in order to reduce the data transmissions. However, since this method requires all vehicles to transmit beacons, it suffers from the excessive beacon collision when the vehicle density becomes high. In this paper, we propose a data transmission control method that realizes STD retention without transmitting beacons. Our simulation results using Luxembourg model demonstrates that the proposed method can achieve high coverage rate while decreasing the number of data transmissions compared with the existing transmission method based on transmission probability control in real environments.

In IoT era, the growth of data variety is driven by cross-domain data fusion. In this paper, we advocate that “local production for local consumption (LPLC) paradigm" can be an innovative approach in cross-domain data fusion, and propose a new framework, geolocation-centric information platform (GCIP) that can produce and deliver diverse spatio-temporal content (STC). In the GCIP, (1) infrastructure-based geographic hierarchy edge network and (2) adhoc-based STC retention system are interplayed to provide both of geolocation-awareness and resiliency. Then, we discussed the concepts and the technical challenges of the GCIP. Finally, we implemented a proof-of-concepts of GCIP and demonstrated its efficacy through practical experiments on campus IPv6 network and simulation experiments.

The communications quality of content delivery networks (CDNs), which are geographically distributed networks that have been optimized for content delivery, deteriorates when interflow congestion conditions are severe. Herein, we propose an adaptive server and path switching scheme that is based on the estimated acquisition throughput of each path. We also provide simulation results that show our proposed method can provide higher throughput performance levels than existing methods.

With the development and spread of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the number of devices connected to the Internet is increasing, and various kinds of data are now being generated from IoT devices. Some data generated from IoT devices depends on geographical location and time. We refer to such data as spatio-temporal data (STD). Since the “local production and consumption" of STD is effective for location-dependent applications, we have proposed a STD retention system using vehicles equipped with storage modules, computing resources, and short-range wireless communication equipment. In this previous system, each vehicle controls the data transmission probability based on the neighboring vehicle density in order to achieve effective data retention. However, since the overhead of beacon messages required for estimation of the neighboring vehicle density becomes a critical problem with the increase in the number of vehicles, thereby preventing the effective data retention. In this paper, we propose a new data transmission control method to realize effective and reliable STD retention without beacon. Simulation results showed that our proposed scheme can achieve effective data retention.

This paper presents the results of verification tests for the application of a 5th generation mobile communication system (5G) to an industrial robot control system, consisting of an industrial robot, a three-dimensional measurement sensor, and a robot controller. First, the configuration of the industrial robot control system to be used for testing was examined. Second, the 5G radio characteristics at two factories were measured. The radio interference to/from devices in operation in the factories and the human shield effect influencing the radio characteristics were also examined in these measurements. In factory automation, it is generally inevitable to spend a long time rearranging the components of the industrial robot control system. From the test results, it was confirmed that the time required could be greatly reduced by replacing wired communication lines with 5G capable systems.
