The radiation belt, where the high-energy particles are predominant in near earth space from the low earth orbit (LEO)to the geostationary orbit (GEO), sometimes causes satellite malfunction. Therefore, the objective of this study is to predict the high-energy electron flux at GEO with the energy above 2 MeV after 24 hours with higher accuracy for the safety satellite operation in terms of the space weather science. In this study the various kinds of solar wind data from satellite observations and ground geomagnetic observation data in 1999 were used for the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). Prediction results were evaluated by the prediction efficiency, which is derived from both predicted and actual variation data. As a result, the prediction using combined data of solar wind and geomagnetic data shows highest prediction efficiency of 0.72.

We describe scientific o bjective a nd p roject s tatus o f a n a stronomical 6 U C ubeSat m ission V ERTECS (Visible Extragalactic background RadiaTion Exploration by CubeSat). The scientific g oal o f V ERTECS i s t o reveal the star-formation history along the evolution of the universe by measuring the extragalactic background light (EBL) in the visible wavelength. Earlier observations have shown that the near-infrared EBL is several times brighter than integrated light of individual galaxies. As candidates for the excess light, first-generation s tars in the early universe or low-redshift intra-halo light have been proposed. Since these objects are expected to show different e mission s pectra i n v isible w avelengths, m ulti-color v isible o bservations a re c rucial t o r eveal t he origin of the excess light. Since detection sensitivity of the EBL depends on the product of the telescope aperture and the field o f v iew, i t i s p ossible t o o bserve i t w ith a s mall b ut w ide-field te lescope sy stem th at ca n be mounted on the limited volume of CubeSat. In VERTECS mission, we develop a 6U CubeSat equipped with a 3U-sized telescope optimized for observation of the visible EBL. The bus system composed of onboard computer, electric power system, communication subsystem, and structure is based on heritage of series of CubeSats developed at Kyushu Institute of Technology in combination with high-precision attitude control subsystem and deployable solar array paddle required for the mission. The VERTECS mission was selected for JAXA-Small Satellite Rush Program (JAXA-SMASH Program), a new program that encourages universities, private companies and JAXA to collaborate to realize small satellite missions utilizing commercial small launch opportunities, and to diversify transportation services in Japan. We started the satellite development in December 2022 and plan to launch the satellite in FY2025.

In order to develop practical space human resources on an interdisciplinary of science and engineering fields, Kyushu Institute of Technology and the Kyushu University collaborated to implement a 2U-size CubeSat development program for undergraduate students. In this program, students from different universities and different disciplines work together to develop satellites to accomplish full-scale scientific missions. To guide this program, complementary educational programs in science and engineering were established, and the two universities collaborated to educate the students. In this paper we report the outline and implementation of this initiative.

Nanosatellites are proliferating as low-cost dedicated sensing systems with lean development cycles. Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) and collaborators have launched a joint venture for a nanosatellite mission, Visible Extragalactic background RadiaTion Exploration by CubeSat (VERTECS). The primary mission is to elucidate the formation history of stars by observing the optical-wavelength cosmic background radiation. The VERTECS satellite will be equipped with a small-Aperture telescope and a high-precision attitude control system to capture the astronomical data for analysis on the ground. However, nanosatellites are limited by their onboard memory resources and downlink speed capabilities. Additionally, due to a limited number of ground stations, the satellite mission will face issues meeting the required data budget for mission success. To alleviate this issue, we propose an on-orbit system pipeline to autonomously classify and then compress desirable image data for downlink prioritization and optimization. The system comprises a prototype Camera Controller Board (CCB) which carries a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 which is used for classification and compression. The system uses a lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to classify and determine the desirability of captured image data. The model is designed to be lean and robust to reduce the computational and memory load on the satellite. The model is trained and tested on a novel star field dataset consisting of data captured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The dataset is meant to simulate the expected data produced by the 6U satellite. The compression step implements GZip, RICE or HCOMPRESS compression, which are standards for astronomical data. Preliminary testing on the proposed CNN model results in a validation classification accuracy of 100% on the star field dataset, with compression ratios of 3.99, 5.16 and 5.43 for GZip, RICE and HCOMPRESS that were achieved on tested FITS image data.

Many CubeSat development program has been conducted by college and university students after first launch of CubeSats in 2003. In general, CubeSat development requires to practice systems engineering including satellite testing and project management while learning the process of manufacturing that combines elemental technologies such as mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and information and communication engineering. Although the most of facilitators of student CubeSat project usually appreciate high educational effect for participating students, their quantitative evaluation methods for the skills acquired by students through satellite development have not yet been established. In this paper, we propose an evaluation method for the attitudes and abilities of students participating in student satellite projects. The result of the trial shows that the proposed evaluation method potentially possible to assess the 7 perspectives defined in this study.

Because of its communication volume constraints, scientific observations by nanosatellites need to reduce downlink data by onboard data preprocessing. Therefore, we tried to classify time series data of the geomagnetic field obtained by the SWARM satellite to determine the most appropriate method for onboard classification of a phenomenon in the geomagnetic field. The classifications have been executed using rule-based, K-means, and combined CNN methods. The experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the machine-learning model with LSTM networks.

In this paper, we report an achievement of Human Resource Development Program for student of National Institute of Technology (KOSEN). This program is aimed to cultivate an ability of the aerospace engineering in non-space major students. The program consists of three parts of sub-programs: (1) KOSEN Space Academia which is a remote hands-on seminar using video conference system (2) KOSEN Space Camp which is a four-days camp-style workshop held in Niihama city, and (3) KOSEN-1 project which is an actual development of 2U size CubeSat. A total of 263 students and 78 faculty members participated in this program for three years from 2017 to 2019.

Watari et al. (Space Weather, 2009, 7) found that the geomagnetically induced current (GIC) in Hokkaido, Japan (35.7° geomagnetic latitude (GML)), is well correlated with the y-component magnetic field (By ) (correlation coefficients >0.8) and poorly correlated with Bx,z and dBx,y, z/dt. The linear correlation with By would help predict the GIC, if we have capabilities of reproducing the magnetosphere–ionosphere currents during space weather disturbances. To validate the linear correlation with By for any periods (T) of disturbances, we made correlation analyses for the geomagnetic sudden commencements and pulsations (T = 1–10 min), quasi-periodic DP2 fluctuations (30 min), substorm positive
bays (60 min), geomagnetic storms (1–20 h), and quiet-time diurnal variations (8 h). The linear correlation is found to be valid for short periods (cc > 0.8 for T < 1 h) but not for long periods (cc < 0.3 for T > 6 h). To reproduce the GIC with any periods, we constructed one-layer model with uniform conductor and calculated the electric field (IEF) induced by By using the convolution of dBy /dt and the step response of the conductor. The IEF is found to be correlated with the GIC for long periods (cc > 0.9), while the GIC-By correlation remains
better for short periods. To improve the model, we constructed a two-layer model with highly conductive upper and less conductive lower layers. The IEF is shown to reproduce the GIC with cc > 0.9 for periods ranging from 1 min to 24 h. The model is applied to the
GIC measured at lower latitudes in Japan (25.3° GML) with strong By dependence. The mechanism of the strong By dependence of the GIC remains an issue, but a possible mechanism for the daytime GIC is due to the zeroth-order transverse magnetic (TM0) mode in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide, by which the ionospheric currents are transmitted from the polar to equatorial ionosphere.

This paper reports the activities resulting from satellite communication lectures conducted by the KOSEN space group in January and August of 2018. Since 2014 the KOSEN space group has been developing two CubeSats to educate students and to complete scientific missions. Consequently, the aim of our lectures is to enable KOSEN students to monitor and operate the CubeSats by satellite communication. In the January lecture, students learned satellite communication theories, and practical training on the assembly and operation of simple receivers. In August, the students learned the theories of digital satellite communication and participated in advanced training using the simple receivers. A survey indicated the participants are interested in receiving signals from a real satellite in space, using the simple self-assembled receivers.

This paper describes the “2017 and 2018 KOSEN Space Camps.” These camps offer introductory space technology programs for students enrolled in the various KOSEN technology colleges in Japan. Since 2015, we have hosted this camp at the Marine Park Niihama. Over the last two years, we evolved and refined the camp's contents to develop a more effective space technology and science education program. In 2017, we successfully held two CanSat development courses: One for beginners to learn how to use onboard computers and sensors and one that is driven more by the participants' imaginations. We tried to make our camps stand out in terms of content variations and load balances including competition. In 2018, we attempted to introduce advanced content such as model CubeSat development and competition. This new trial included online preparation materials from KOSEN's space academia. We will continue to improve the Space Camp content so that in the future, this program may be established as an annual space event in Niihama City.

We report the development of a model CubeSat for satellite communication education. The communication between satellites and ground stations is an essential part of satellite operations. As a critical part of the satellite systems, we focused on satellite communication to train the student so that they can develop and operate the CubeSats. The model CubeSat is equipped with fundamental components, such as an onboard computer, sensors, communication, and power supply, which are necessary for satellites. The software programs in the model CubeSat provide two functions: controlling and monitoring satellites, and transmission of telemetry and image data. The students can study the communication equipment and operations of satellite communication using our model CubeSat.

Currently, 10 National Institutes of Technology (KOSEN) are collaborating to develop a 2U CubeSat. This study aims to develop a CubeSat ground model that allows KOSEN students who wish to participate to learn CubeSat. The CubeSat ground model is a standard 10cm×10cm×20cm (2U) CubeSat size. Furthermore, it consists of a similar subsystem as the actual CubeSat, enabling semi-autonomous operation by OBC, charging and feeding by solar cells, and data transmission by wireless devices. Moreover, a structure system with a space where mission equipment can be installed will be designed, so that students can deepen their understanding of the satellite mission. These plans will be used in the model CubeSat production course at the KOSEN Space Camp 2019. This paper describes features of the developed model CubeSat and introduces the model CubeSat production course.

We report on a practical example of an online engineering-related manufacturing course: a production course for CanSat, an extremely small satellite model. Conducting online manufacturing courses is an effective tool for technical education. To spread space technology education nationwide, CanSat courses are held via online conferences. For students, the kit and the fabrication manual for the CanSat course were improved; in addition, the work procedure manual and documentation for instructors were enhanced. For this course, students experienced preparing the educational kits and teaching the CanSat course themselves, practicing for the course through product preparation. In this paper, we summarize the results of the CanSat course from preparation to implementation, and propose improvements for future courses.

In this study, cheap and easy-to-use CubeSat educational materials are developed for students studying satellite development, for the first time. The developed model CubeSat is slightly larger than 1U size, and comprises multiple subsystems similar to a real satellite. In addition, model CubeSat competitions on the power supply, communication, and attitude are designed and conducted, where the respective subsystems are applied. The questionnaire results indicate that the model CubeSat assembly course and competition are popular and beneficial for the students.

For space technology education, we performed the first CubeSat ground model competition for KOSEN (National Institute of Technology) students in Japan, using a newly developed Model CubeSat. Based on the actual operation of the satellite, the events of the Model CubeSat competition were designed to focus on three important subsystems-the electrical power, attitude control, and communications systems. In this paper, we outline the results of the Model CubeSat competition for KOSEN students and discuss the educational merits and further improvements to spread the Model CubeSat competition nationally.
