Temporal subtraction enhances temporal change by subtracting images captured at different times. Medical images captured currently (current images) and in previous examination (previous images) are subtracted to enhance new lesions and temporal change in existing lesion shadows. Temporal subtraction using chest MultiDetector-Row Computed Tomography (MDCT) images and currently being developed is to be applied to nodule detection in pulmonary regions. Nodule detection using conventional temporal subtraction, however, yields many false-positive results for those 20 mm or less in diameter, requiring improvement. We discuss improvements in nodule detection accuracy using temporal subtraction, first extracting rough nodules from temporal subtraction images as candidate shadows. Features are then acquired from current, previous, and temporal subtraction images. We use intensity features in previous images and shape features in the current images and in features used in conventional methods. Using acquired features, we build a neural network classifier, then extract final pulmonary candidates in unknown shadows.

The temporal subtraction image, which can be obtained by subtracting previous image from current one, is useful for visual screening in clinical field. The temporal subtraction technique removes normal structures, e.g., blood vessel. Hence, it can enhance interval changes such as the new lesions and the changes of existing abnormalities on medical images. Recently, several temporal subtraction methods have been proposed for thoracic medical images. In temporal subtraction, image registration technique is required for correcting displacement between current image and previous one. However, efficient image registration technique of temporal subtraction for MDCT (Multi Detector-row CT) has not been proposed because of the complication of deformation in 3 dimensional region. In this paper, we propose a new efficient computer aided diagnosis (CAD) algorithms for detection of lung nodules which are obtained by temporal subtraction for thoracic MDCT images. We have tried to reduce the computational time for the temporal subtraction image by use of octree algorithms on 3-dimensional image space. To evaluate our method, we have applied the method to 4 MDCT dataset and confirmed its efficiency. © 2011.

Image registration is one of the important techniques for diagnosis or treat- ment using medical images. Especially, it is very efficient to detect abnormalities by comparing two or more images. The images, which are provided from multi modalities or taken several different times, are used for diagnosis. One of the multi modal images is CT and MR imaging of the head for diagnosis and surgical planning indicates that physicians and surgeons gain important information from these modalities. In general, to simulate before the surgical operation, manual registration techniques are mainly per- formed on MR and CT images of the head. However, manual registration of the object may require several hours for analysis based on anatomical knowledge. In this paper, we describe a new method for image registration technique of head images obtained from CT and MRI. Our new method uses an optimal retrieval on neighbor volumes of interest (VOIs) and maximization of mutual information. This method also can reduce the pro-cessing time without decreasing the registration accuracy. © 2011 ISSN 2185-2766.
