This research intends to investigate the applicability of fullerene as an electrically insulating filler. So far, the authors reported that the addition of a very small amount of fullerene C60 to epoxy resin (EP) improves the dielectric breakdown strength $(E_{\mathrm{b}})$ by about 30%. This report presents the study on the effect of four different types of fullerenes as fillers added to EP on the improvement of $E_{\mathrm{b}}$. Fullerenes used are mixtures of C60 and higher order one $\mathrm{C}_{70}$ with a different mixture rate, and the addition effect of sublimation-purified fullerene on $E_{\mathrm{b}}$ is also investigated. Experimental results reveal that samples added with sublimated fullerenes exhibit larger $E_{\mathrm{b}}$ than that of samples without sublimation. The sublimation-purified sample is also found to give almost no difference in $E_{\mathrm{b}}$ by the type or proportion of the added fullerenes $\mathrm{C}_{60}$ and $\mathrm{C}_{70}$. An attempt is also made to discuss the mechanism of the improvement effect on $E_{\mathrm{b}}$ of fullerene by evaluating the electronic state of epoxies with different fullerene fillers and curing agent using quantum chemical calculation. As a result, it is shown that the introduction of $\mathrm{C}_{60}$ and $\mathrm{C}_{70}$ into the EP considering the curing agent introduces electron traps of 0.64 and 0.72 eV, respectively. It is interpreted that the introduced electron traps suppress the electron avalanche, and consequently improves the breakdown strength.

This paper deals with partial discharge characteristics in oil/pressboard composite insulation system, which is used in oil-immersed power transformer. It is found that the discharge propagates in the same route on the pressboard surface as in the previous discharge every time under repeated impulse voltage application. We also revealed that the white trace remained along the path of discharge and affected the subsequent discharge progress because of being a weak point part on insulation. This study presents an investigation of the effect of the white trace on partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) of the composite insulation system with high-speed optical observation and electrical measurements for the discharge propagation. The discharge propagation mechanism is also discussed with comparing the discharge progress characteristics before and after the white trace formation.

© 1994-2012 IEEE. In this research, we aim to construct a completely new partial discharge (PD) monitoring system that applies inexpensive power line communication (PLC). We have proposed a PD detection method and monitoring system (PDMS-PLC) on the basis of PLC signal transfer rare is affected by an error due to disturbance. An attempt is made to identify PD source from the quadrant dependence of information transmission rate (hereinafter referred to PHY rate [Mbps]) by selecting a pair of quadrants of applied voltage phase; i.e. 1st and 3rd quadrants, or 2nd and 4th ones. It was found that the PHY (Abbreviation for the lowest physical layer in the OSI (open systems interconnection) hierarchical model.) rate number distribution reflects the PD characteristics obtained by the phase resolved PD (PRPD) pattern. Environmental noise level is also measured at an actual substation using PDMS-PLC. Consequently, the applicability of PDMS-PLC to PD signal detection and defect type identification is suggested.
