Wireless sensor actuator networks (WSANs) has radio sensor actuator nodes, which have a function of control on wireless sensor networks (WSN), is a promising framework of various services, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M). To support various services, high response and power-saving technologies are essential for radio sensor actuator node. Therefore, the Radio-On-Demand (ROD) technology for WLAN proposed in our previous works is applied to WSAN in order to achieve not only high response but also power-saving. In this paper, we propose a new channel selection scheme in which the averaged transmission interval of each channel is employed as a criterion of channel selection. This scheme works with a collaboration of a function of wake-up receiver in ROD-SAN, thereby improving the perfomance drastically.

Evaluation of Channel Utilization Method on Multi-Channel Wireless Backbone Network

This paper evaluates the proposed flow management methods for multi-channel wireless backbone network (WBN) in a real environment. In our study, we assume that multiple wireless channels are available for communication between neighboring APs in WBN and OpenFlow technology is employed to determine the channel for transmission of each flow. We proposed following control methods: a direction-based channel assignment method, a balance-oriented method, by which the channel is assigned in a round-robin manner, i.e., the channels is switched in the order of flow arrival, and a traffic volume based method of smoothing the amount of transmitted traffic among available channels. In the experimental results, we can obtain approximately three times capacity of conventional WBN and the traffic volume based method is the most effective from the viewpoint of channel utilization.

Public Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is widely used in urban area. Stores such as a coffee shop, self-governing bodies, and mobile-phone enterprises provide the Internet connectivity by the public WLAN for smartphones and multifunction mobile terminals. WLAN uses limited wireless resources, such as channels and transmitting power, hence the communication quality frequently varies by physical influence of communication area. For example, WLANs separately managed by different organization and wireless equipment other than WLAN may affect quality of wireless links of WLAN. We have already studied the wireless channel utilization and the population of WLAN standards in urban area in Kitakyushu. This research examines the wireless channel utilization and communication quality of WLAN at the urban areas in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka. Furthermore, we investigate the main factor for deterioration of communication quality of WLAN through experiments of wireless link quality around WiFi AP.

An Efficient Utilization Method of Multipath Transport Technology for Communication in Data Center Networks

In recent years, the demands for data center has been increasing with the wide spread of various cloud services. In the future, multiple data centers operated by different cloud providers will be interconnected to provide a new kind of services, namely big data. This paper assumes that data centers located all over the world are connected each other through the Internet (i.e., data center networks). Then, to achieve efficient data transmission over the data center networks, Multipath TCP (MPTCP) that can effectively make use of multiple pathes, is employed. Although current MPTCP tries to improve the throughput performance, its congestion and retransmission control directly cannot be applied to communication in data center networks. Therefore, in this paper, the following three sorts of functions are proposed to satisfy the requirements for long flows and short flows as data center traffic, even when these flows are transmitted over the Internet with high bandwidth-delay products (BDP): (1) a new multipath congestion control technique based on Cubic TCP, (2) packet allocation method reducing out-of-order packets, and (3) retransmission mechanism in which loss packets are retransmitted by multiple subflows. Through simulations, the proposed scheme improves the throughput performance of long flows drastically, while remarkably reducing the latency due to out-of-order arrival of short flows.

Wireless sensor actuator networks (WSANs), which have a function of control on various sensors, are expected as a base technology in the machine to machine (M2M), the Internet of Things (IoT), and so on. A wireless sensor actuator node that constructs WSANs needs high response and energy efficiency. Therefore, we have proposed the ROD-SAN that applied technologies of Radio-on-Demand Networks (ROD) to WSANs. In this paper, we propose a channel switching scheme for multi-hop communication in ROD-SAN. Furthermore, we evaluate the proposed scheme by performing simulations, and show that it can improve performance.
