With rapidly growing of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) in renewable power systems, several disturbances influence on the power systems such as; lack of system inertia that results from replacing the synchronous generators with RESs and frequency/voltage fluctuations that resulting from the intermittent nature of the RESs. Hence, the modern power systems become more susceptible to the system instability than conventional power systems. Therefore, in this study, a new application of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) (i.e., auxiliary Load Frequency Control (LFC)) has been integrated with the secondary frequency control (i.e., LFC) for frequency stability enhancement of the Egyptian Power System (EPS) due to high RESs penetration. Where, the coordinated control strategy is based on the PI controller that is optimally designed by the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to minimize the frequency deviations of the EPS. The EPS includes both conventional generation units (i.e., non-reheat, reheat and hydraulic power plants) with inherent nonlinearities, and RESs (i.e., wind and solar energy). System modelling and simulation results are carried out using Matlab/Simulink® software. The simulation results reveal the robustness of the proposed coordinated control strategy to preserve the system stability of the EPS with high penetration of RESs for different contingencies.

This paper presents a coordination strategy of Load Frequency Control (LFC) and digital frequency protection for an islanded microgrid (MG) considering high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs). In such MGs, the reduction in system inertia due to integration of large amount of RESs causes undesirable influence on MG frequency stability, leading to weakening of the MG. Furthermore, sudden load events, and short circuits caused large frequency fluctuations, which threaten the system security and could lead to complete blackouts as well as damages to the system equipment. Therefore, maintaining the dynamic security in MGs is one of the important challenges, which considered in this paper using a specific design and various data conversion stages of a digital over/under frequency relay (OUFR). The proposed relay will cover both under and over frequency conditions in coordination with LFC operation to protect the MG against high frequency variations. To prove the response of the proposed coordination strategy, a small MG was investigated for the simulation. The proposed coordination method has been tested considering load change, high integration of RESs. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis of the presented technique was examined by varying the penetration level of RESs and reducing the system inertia. The results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed coordination to maintain the power system frequency stability and security. In addition, the superiority of the OUFR has been approved in terms of accuracy and speed response during high disturbances.

Nowadays, the interconnection issues of different power plants are interested and must be highlighted, such as the frequency stability and voltage stability, which are a basic principle in the power system operation. Many reasons such as, load shedding, load restoring, and short circuits cause large frequency fluctuations, which threaten the system security and could lead to complete blackouts as well as damages to the system equipment. Hence, this paper proposes a coordination of Load Frequency Control (LFC), which uses an optimized PID controller-based new Moth Swarm algorithm (MSA) and digital under/over frequency relay for a realistic multi-source power system considering different cases study of load shedding and restoring. The digital relay will be energized by the data conversion system under normal and fault conditions. The presented digital frequency relay will cover both over and under frequency conditions. To validate the effect of the proposed coordination, the Egyptian Power System (EPS), which contains three dynamics subsystems, hydro, reheat, and non-reheat power plants, was investigated for the MATLAB/SIMULINK considering the effect of system nonlinearity. The obtained results stated the effectiveness of the proposed coordination to maintain the power system frequency stability and security. Furthermore, the superiority of the under/over digital frequency relay has been approved.

© 2018 IEEE. One of the solutions to solve the low inertia issue in the power system due to the integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) is by using a virtual synchronous generator (VSG). However, most of the VSG research is conducted focused on the area of power electronics using a simple generator-load system. In this paper, the results of an investigation on the placement of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) in a two-area, four-generator power system are presented. The effects of the placement of VSG at different locations in the system with reduced inertia are analyzed using time-domain and modal analysis.

In order to handle these challenges, this study proposes a specific design of the digital OUFR, which will operate for both conditions of over and under frequency in coordination with digital PID controller based on mapping technique in discretization process to protect the MG against highfrequency variations. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed digital coordination strategy, a small MG was investigated for the simulation considering load change, varying the penetration level of RESs and the system inertia. The results reveal the robustness of the proposed coordination to maintain the MG frequency stability and security. In addition, the superiority of the digital OUFR has been approved in terms of accuracy and speed response during high disturbances.

© 2018 IEEE. Nowadays, several microgrid (MG) integration issues are interested and must be highlighted. Due to wind power is highly dependent on wind speed, which is naturally variable, severe stability problems can be caused in power systems, especially when the wind power has a high penetration level. To improve the stability of the MG, the control actions need to be more robust and efficient. Hence, this paper proposes the use of an energy storage system (ESS) based on Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES), which uses the Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) with power electronic technology to control the power transfer from/to the MG. Furthermore, the reactive power of the SMES is controlled using voltage source converter (VSC) to mitigate the voltage fluctuations. This control strategy has been tested out using different scenarios of wind speed gust, load shedding and loads restoring, which highly influence the power system operation. To prove the efficient performance of the proposed control strategy, an isolated MG comprises of squirrel cage induction generators (SCIG) as a wind turbine generator (WTG) and diesel synchronous generators; was investigated for the simulation using MATLAB/Simulink. Moreover, the proposed technique is compared with the conventional energy storage device like DC batteries. The obtained simulation results stated that the SMES based-FLC achieved superior dynamic responses satisfying the stability requirements in all test scenarios.

The main purpose of this paper is to propose an approach of the PSS (Power System Stabilizer) parameter tuning for interconnection system between Kalimantan Selatan - Tengah (Kalselteng) and Kalimantan Timur (Kaltim) in Indonesia. At this time, PSS module that exists on the generators in both of the subsystems have not been activated yet. This paper is expected to be a reference to determine the location and to tune the PSS parameter values for the other electrical power system in Indonesia. The location of PSS is determined by participation factor using DIgSILENT PowerFactory ® software, then the tuning is processed using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method by MATLAB ®. After getting the tuned PSS parameter values, the response of the system towards the short-circuit simulation is compared with typical values of PSS parameter [7] as the validation process.

The phase difference between the source and the residual voltage of induction motors could cause a large torque on the motors. The peak air-gap torque is investigated based on the resultant vectorial Volts per Hertz between the source and the motor bus. The interaction between multiple motors, the influence of the inertia and loading condition have been analyzed by simulations.

This paper presents a Load Frequency Control (LFC) design using a new optimal PID controller-based Moth Swarm Algorithm (MSA) in Egyptian power system (EPS) in the presence of wind farms. To improve the frequency stability of the EPS, the control action needs to be more robust and efficient. Hence, this study presents a coordination between the secondary control (i.e., LFC), and controlled Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) using the optimal PID controller-based MSA for frequency stability enhancement of the EPS. Moreover, the performance of the proposed coordination is compared with both; the optimal LFC with/without the uncontrollable SMES under different load profiles, wind power fluctuations, and system uncertainty. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed coordination, the EPS with inherent nonlinearity was tested using Matlab/SIMULINK® software. The results confirmed that the robustness of the proposed coordination in terms of reducing transient time, minimizing the frequency deviations, and preventing conventional generators from exceeding their power ratings during load disturbances.

In applying virtual synchronous generator (VSG) to solve the low system inertia issue in the microgrid, especially in a microgrid without secondary control loop, one aspect that should be considered is the allocation of the VSG active power output. It should be properly determined to maintain the frequency of microgrid within the allowable margin, including during a large system disturbance. This paper presents an approach to obtain a proper active power reference of VSG using particle swarm optimization (PSO) by also considering several operating scenarios. By using the obtained active power reference, the microgrid frequency could be restored within allowable limits in various scenarios with minimum average final frequency deviation after an occurrence of a large disturbance, thus prevent the unnecessary load shedding and improving overall system frequency stability.

This study proposes a coordination of load frequency control (LFC) and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) technology (i.e. auxiliary LFC) using a new optimal PID controller-based moth swarm algorithm (MSA) in Egyptian Power System (EPS) considering high wind power penetration (HWPP) (as a future planning of the EPS). This strategy is proposed for compensating the EPS frequency deviation, preventing the conventional generators from exceeding their power ratings during load disturbances, and mitigating the power fluctuations from wind power plants. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed coordinated control strategy, the EPS considering HWPP was tested by the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation. The convention generation system of the EPS is decomposed into three dynamics subsystems; hydro, reheat and non-reheat power plants. Moreover, the physical constraints of the governors and turbines such as generation rate constraints of power plants and speed governor dead band (i.e. backlash) are taking into consideration. The results reveal the superior robustness of the proposed coordination against all scenarios of different load profiles, and system uncertainties in the EPS considering HWPP. Moreover, the results have been confirmed by comparing it with both; the optimal LFC with/without the effect of conventional SMES, which without modifying the input control signal.

Electric power regulation and modeling of a central tower receiver power plant based on artificial neural network technique 査読有り

This paper addresses an intelligent control scheme using the artificial neural network (ANN) technique for modeling and simulating a central tower receiver (CTR) plant with thermal energy storage (TES). The multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) was implemented with two input parameters, one output parameter, and one hidden layer. The inputs comprise the receiver inlet temperature and the receiver thermal power. The output includes the mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid. A total of 888 datasets and three types of training algorithms, Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), Quasi-Newton, and Scaled Conjugate Gradient, are applied for training the proposed MLPNN model. Among all the investigated learning algorithms, the adopted LM with 40 neurons in the first hidden layer displayed superior ability to efficiently estimate the required performance compared to other learning algorithms. Based on the statistical evaluations, the optimized LM delivered preferred values for the root mean square error (0.0037), the coefficient of variance (0.0011), and the coefficient of determination (0.9999) during the training process. Hence, the MLPNN with LM-40 is an effective technique to precisely control the mass flow rate and subsequently the receiver outlet temperature regardless of the variations in the direct solar radiation and receiver inlet temperature. Furthermore, the generation strategy was modified to regulate CTR/TES output through electricity generation according to the hot storage system conditions. The performance of the adopted CTR-ANN model is presented and compared with the System Advisor Model (SAM) results. The results demonstrate better compatibility between the adopted CTR-ANN model and SAM outputs. The simplicity and minimum required input data of our proposed model make it appropriate for evaluating the power system reliability by using the Monte Carlo method.

© 2018 Author(s). Photovoltaic (PV) system integration in the electric grid has been increasing over the past decades. However, the impact of PV penetration on the electric grid, especially during the periods of higher and lower generation for the solar system at the middle of the day and during cloudy weather or at night respectively, limit the high penetration of solar PV system. In this research, a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) with Thermal Energy Storage (TES) has been aggregated with PV system in order to accommodate the required electrical power during the higher and lower solar energy at all timescales. This paper analyzes the impacts of CSP on the grid-connected PV considering high penetration of PV system, particularly when no energy storages in the form of batteries are used. Two cases have been studied, the first when only PV system is integrated into the electric grid and the second when two types of solar energy (PV and CSP) are integrated. The System Advisor Model (SAM) software is used to simulate the output power of renewable energy. Simulation results show that the performance of CSP has a great impact on the penetration level of PV system and on the flexibility of the electric grid. The overall grid flexibility increases due to the ability of CSP to store and dispatch the generated power. In addition, CSP/TES itself has inherent flexibility. Therefore, CSP reduces the minimum generation constraint of the conventional generators that allows more penetration of the PV system.

However, the irregular nature of RESs and random load deviations cause a large frequency and voltage fluctuations. Therefore, in order to benefit from a maximum capacity of the RESs, a robust mitigation strategy of power fluctuations from RESs must be applied. Hence, this paper proposes a design of Load Frequency Control (LFC) coordinated with Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) technology (i.e., an auxiliary LFC), using an optimal PID controller-based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in the Egyptian Power System (EPS) considering high penetration of Photovoltaics (PV) power generation. Thus, from the perspective of LFC, the robust control strategy is proposed to maintain the nominal system frequency and mitigating the power fluctuations from RESs against all disturbances sources for the EPS with the multi-source environment. The EPS is decomposed into three dynamics subsystems, which are non-reheat, reheat and hydro power plants taking into consideration the system nonlinearity. The results by nonlinear simulation Matlab/Simulink for the EPS combined with SMES system considering PV solar power approves that, the proposed control strategy achieves a robust stability by reducing transient time, minimizing the frequency deviations, maintaining the system frequency, preventing conventional generators from exceeding their power ratings during load disturbances, and mitigating the power fluctuations from the RESs.

The main scope of the presented study is to cogitate the effectiveness of the BESS controller in view of fluctuations of frequency/voltage subjected to a disturbance occurring in the islanded microgrid. In the Mae Sariang microgrid system, the electricity is produced from two renewable energy resources (RESs), i.e., hydro and solar PV. The use of these clean energy sources has become a main problem, envisaging the output power uncertainties from RESs. Further, such power uncertainty raises power quality problems and leads to power failure. To overcome such problems, the proposed fuzzy logic control (FLC) approach is applied for the BESS controller to improve the stability of the islanded Mae Sariang microgrid. The proposed FLC is intended to provide the BESS with well-established attributes of dynamical response to disturbance, which is analyzed by a predictive model. The proposed FLC has been investigated and compared with the robust control method, which is analyzed by a mathematical model using the system identification technique. The modeling of the microgrid system with BESS is implemented and verified on the DIgSILENT PowerFactory software. The simulation result illustrates that both of the control approaches allow the dynamic stability of the microgrid and the maintenance of frequency and voltage within acceptable ranges. However, the proposed BESS fuzzy logic control is less prone to uncertainty than the BESS robust control. Furthermore, in the proposed BESS fuzzy logic control, the microgrid frequency and voltage rapidly return to their normal steady-state condition and the size of the BESS is smaller than the BESS robust control.

Due to a rapid increase in the utilization of power converter-based renewable energy sources (RESs), the overall system inertia in an interconnected power system might be significantly reduced, increasing the vulnerability of the interconnected power system to the system instability. To overcome problems caused by the significant reduction in system inertia, this paper proposes a new application of virtual inertia control to improve frequency stability of the interconnected power system due to high penetration level of RESs. The derivative control technique is introduced for higher-level applications of virtual inertia emulation. Thus, the proposed virtual inertia control loop has a second-order characteristic, which provides a simultaneous enabling of damping and inertia emulations into the interconnected power system, enhancing frequency stability and resiliency. System modeling and simulation results are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink® (R2016b, MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA). Trajectory sensitivities are also performed to analyze the dynamic effects of virtual inertia control's parameters on the system stability. The effectiveness of the virtual inertia control concept on stability improvement is verified through a multi-area test system with high RESs penetration level for different contingencies.

This paper presents a discrete-time model of an optimal controller based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for Egyptian Power System-Load Frequency Control (EPS-LFC) with inherent nonlinearities. The realistic power system in Egypt is modeled as three dynamics subsystems which are non-reheat, reheat, and hydro power plants. Moreover, the effects of the physical constraints such as Generation Rate Constraints (GRC) and speed governor dead band are taking into consideration. Subsequently, an optimal controller is discretized to obtain optimal digital controller via bilinear transform method of mapping discretization technique for regulating the system frequency. The performance of the presented discrete-time model of EPS-LFC is compared with an analog model for different cases of disturbance and system parametric uncertainties. The results by nonlinear simulation Matlab/Simulink for the EPS-LFC approves that the digital model ensures frequency regulation performance and almost have the same performance as the analog one for different uses sampling intervals. However, the digital model produces a little larger amount of overshoot than analog model in case of large sampling time which satisfy the cost of hardware requirement.

© 2017 IEEE. The world is turning towards smart grids. However, upgrading the existing systems could be the easiest solution for such approach. On the other hand, Load Frequency Control (LFC) is a critical issue in the dynamical operation of power systems. This paper presents LFC scheme for a realistic Power System operational in Egypt(EPS) with inherent nonlinearities. Moreover, the speed response of every subsystem is different from each other. The effects of the physical constraints such as Generation Rate Constraints (GRC) of power plants and speed governor dead band (blackash) are taken into consideration. In this paper, each subsystem controller has been designed independently to guarantee the stability of the overall closed loop system. Hence, optimal PID controllers based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm are proposed for every subsystem separately to regulate the frequency and track the load. In order to investigate the ability of upgrading the system to smart grids, the performance of the proposed decentralized PID controller of each subsystems is compared with aggregate one. The proposed model can achieve a robust stability against changing the system parameters and operating load condition for the EPS with multi-source environment. The results by nonlinear simulation Matlab/Simulink for the EPS LFC approves that the decentralized model of the controller gives the same performance as the aggregated one. However, in case of large disturbances, the aggregated controller design cannot handle the fault while the decentralized scheme is more robust and effective against all disturbances and operating conditions. In contrast, in the advanced smart grids, the aggregated design would give a better flexible control strategy for the system.
