© 2017 IEEE. In this paper, a developed model design to simulate a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) output has been presented. Namely, Central Tower Receiver (CTR) has been designed with a control methodology based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique. In this developed modeling technique, a model of an ANN technique based on MLP networks is used to evaluate the mass flow rate of the Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) at any given value of the received solar thermal power at the tower receiver (Pth, tr) to adjust the receiver output temperature at the estimated value. The advantage of this model is the simplification and minimization of the required input data for modeling. On the other hand, the simulation result shows that the methodology in this research evaluates the performance of CTR model in a simple and fixable manner.

© 2017 IEEE. Recently, Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has become one of the most popular converters in medium/high power applications. Therefore, this paper presents a high-performance Model Predictive Control (MPC) in order to control the output voltage of the three phase MMC under various conditions and loads. Fast dynamic response, Low output harmonic distortion and voltage stability can be achieved through the proposed control system. The results by nonlinear simulation MATLAB/SIMULINK software for the MMC system approves that the proposed control system gives a high feasibility and better performance against several types of loads.

© 2017 IEEE. This paper presents a decentralized Model Predictive Control (MPC) for Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of a realistic multi power system in Egypt with inherent nonlinearities. The Egyptian Power System (EPS) is decomposed into three dynamic subsystems which are non-reheat, reheat, and hydro power plants. Moreover, each subsystem has its private characteristics compared to the others. Therefore, each subsystem controller has been designed independently to guarantee the stability of the overall closed loop system. Hence, MPC is proposed for every subsystem separately to regulate the frequency and to track the load demands of EPS. The performance of the proposed decentralized MPC of each subsystem is compared with the centralized one at different operational scenarios. The results by nonlinear simulation MATLAB/SIMULINK for the generation control of EPS approves that the decentralized predictive model gives almost the same performance as the centralized one. However, the centralized model cannot address the large load disturbance and system parameters variation. In contrast, the decentralized MPC scheme is more robust and effective against all disturbances and operating conditions.

In this paper, a developed technique of Model Predictive Control (MPC) is proposed to decrease the execution time of the control algorithm for Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) based on grouping the switching states. There are two stages in the control strategy to get the optimal switching state for the converter in the next sampling interval. Within the first stage, the allowable switching states of MMC are divided equally into (M) groups based on the number of sub-modules (SMs) per arm of a single-phase line. Therefore, the output of second-stage obtains the optimal state from each group of the switching states. In addition, all M groups are running simultaneously to reduce the execution time. Unlike the previous algorithm, the second stage of the proposed algorithm uses directly the optimal state and the corresponding cost function for each group from the first stage, then the optimal switching state is selected according to the minimum cost function from the M groups. Therefore, a reduction in the computational time of the MMC algorithm is achieved. The control objectives here are the injected grid currents, balancing the capacitor voltages of SMs at their setpoint, and minimizing the circulating currents in the MMC. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by using the nonlinear simulation of MATLAB/SIMULINK.

Robust Virtual Inertia Control of an Islanded Microgrid Considering High Penetration of Renewable Energy 査読有り

© 2013 IEEE. This paper presents robust virtual inertia control of an islanded microgrid considering high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs). In such microgrids, the lack of system inertia due to the replacement of traditional generating units with a large amount of RESs causes undesirable influence to microgrid frequency stability, leading to weakening of the microgrid. In order to handle this challenge, the H ∞ robust control method is implemented to the virtual inertial control loop, taking into account the high penetration of RESs, thus enhancing the robust performance and stability of the microgrid during contingencies. The controller's robustness and performance are determined along with numerous disturbances and parametric uncertainties. The comparative study between H ∞ and optimal proportional-integral (PI)-based virtual inertia controller is also presented. The results show the superior robustness and control effect of the proposed H ∞ controller in terms of precise reference frequency tracking and disturbance attenuation over the optimal PI controller. It is validated that the proposed H ∞ -based virtual inertia controller successfully provides desired robust frequency support to a low-inertia islanded microgrid against high RESs penetration.

This work presents a hybrid approach based on the genetic algorithm (GA) and moth swarm algorithm (MSA), namely genetic moth swarm algorithm (GMSA). Minimizing the electrical power loss in radial distribution systems (RDN) within the framework of system operation and under system constraints is the main objective of this study. In GMSA, the global search ability has been regulated by the incorporation of GA operations by the adaptive mutation operator on the reconnaissance phase using genetic pathfinder moths. In addition, the selection of artificial light sources has been expanded over the swarm. The representation of individuals within the three phases of MSA has been modified in term of quality and ratio. Elite individuals have been used to play different roles in order to reduce the design space and thus increase the exploitation ability. GMSA and other optimization methods have been carried out on the IEEE 33 and 69-bus power systems. The reduction of power loss and total system cost in addition to the improvement of the minimum bus voltage are simulated for the competitive algorithms under several power system constraints and conditions. The computational results proved the superiority of the GMSA compared with other techniques.

This paper presents a real hybrid power system in Egypt, which includes both conventional generation units and Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) for studying the Load Frequency Control (LFC) problem. The conventional generation system in the Egyptian Power System (EPS) is decomposed into three dynamic subsystems; non-reheat, reheat and hydro power plants. Moreover, real wind speed data extracted from Zafarana location in Egypt is used for achieving a realistic wind power study. Each subsystem of the EPS has its own characteristics compared to the others. Moreover, the physical constraints of the governors and turbines such as Generation Rate Constraints (GRCs) of power plants and speed governor dead band (i.e., backlash) are taken into consideration. Therefore, this paper proposes a decentralized controller for each subsystem independently, to guarantee the stability of the overall closed-loop system. Hence, an optimal PID controller-based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed for every subsystem separately to regulate the frequency and track the load demands of the EPS. The performance of the proposed decentralized controller of each subsystem is compared to the centralized one under different operational scenarios. The EPS is tested using the nonlinear simulation by Matlab/SIMULINK. The obtained results reveal the superior robustness of the proposed decentralized controller against different load disturbance patterns, real wind power fluctuations and EPS uncertainties.

© 2018 In this paper, a novel optimal placement and parameter tuning approach for Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is proposed to damp both local and inter-area modes in mesh like power system. The design target is two-level PSS consisting of ΔP type local PSS and Δθ type Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC). For the PSS placement, modeshape with eigenvector sensitivity and coherency analysis are used to determine the appropriate placement of both local PSS and WADC. For the PSS parameter tuning, metaheuristics based approach via Mean Variance Mapping Optimization (MVMO) is employed in order to consider the time domain analysis. The proposed objective function designs at first the local PSS only to improve damping coefficient and damping ratio of eigenvalue. After that, it designs the WADC overlapping with already designed local PSS by time domain analysis, taking into account the transport delay in the remote signal between Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) and PSS. The proposed method is applied in IEEE New England 39-Bus (NE 39-bus) system model. Then, modeshape and coherent grouping analysis give us understandable system aspect, the local PSS and the WADC optimized by using MVMO considering the transport delay improve both local and inter-area modes whereas a method ignoring the transport delay make system poorly damped.

Optimal Design of Power System Stabilizer Using Remote Signal Considering the Transport Delay 査読有り

© 2018 This paper proposes a novel optimal Power System Stabilizer (PSS) design method to damp inter-area oscillations in power systems. As the input of PSS, remote signals which can be obtained by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are used since remote signals represent global information of the power system. The method improves both small signal stability and transient stability, taking into consideration the fluctuation range of transport delay in the communication link between PMUs and PSSs, which may significantly affect the oscillation damping performance. In the design method, Mean Variance Mapping Optimization (MVMO) is employed to determine the PSS parameters. The proposed method is applied in IEEJ (The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan) WEST 10-machine system model. Then, network modeshape is used to select the most appropriate remote signal. As a result of optimal design, the PSSs with both local and remote signals can give better damping than the local PSS alone, even when maximum transport delay occurs, whereas PSS designed ignoring transport delay makes the system unstable in some cases of such delay.

© 2018 This paper presents a Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique for frequency stabilization of renewable power systems with inherent nonlinearities. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed technique, the Egyptian Power System (EPS), which includes both conventional generation units (i.e., non-reheat, reheat and hydraulic power plants) and wind turbines is tested using Matlab/SIMULINK® software. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed MPC technique is compared with an optimal Proportional-Integral (PI) controller-based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm under different load profiles and system uncertainties. The simulation results emphasize the superior robustness of the proposed MPC-based LFC in comparison to the optimal PI controller.

Recently, central tower receiver (CTR) power plant has been received a considerable attention as a promising technology for large solar thermal plants compared to different concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. The present work adopted a facile controllable scheme using an artificial neural network (ANN) technique for modelling and simulating CTR plant with thermal energy storage (TES). Three different ANN models such as radial basis function (RBF), generalized regression neural network (GRNN), and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) were applied to assess the performance of CTR plant model. Based on statistical error analysis, MLP model was the optimal model compared to RBF and GRNN models. It is found that MLP model displays the best values for the coefficient of determination (R2=1), root mean square error (RMSE=0.003) and mean absolute error (MAE=0.0023) during ANN testing process. While, the values of R2, RMSE, and MAE were 0.999, 0.4817, and 0.32, respectively for GRNN model. Similarly, for RBF model, the values of R2, RMSE, and MAE were 0.9985, 0.2846, and 0.0674, respectively. The MLP provides a precise control over the discharge rate of the heat transfer fluid (HTF). Therefore, the receiver outlet temperature remains constant at the desired value regardless of the variations in direct solar radiation and receiver inlet temperature. Also, in this work, the algorithm of electrical generation methodology was modified for regulating CTR/TES output according to the hot storage tank (HST) conditions. The adopted model performance for a 40 MWe CTR power plant is validated by comparing its results with the obtained simulation results by System Advisor Model (SAM) software. The simulation results exhibit that the adopted CTR-ANN model and SAM results are in good agreement with each other. The reasonable simplicity and minimum required input data of CTR-ANN model make it an adequate tool to predict and analyse the performance of CTR technology in a simple and fixable manner.
