© 2017 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved. The use of capacitor banks is considered as the best-known technique for minimizing the line losses in various distribution networks. Therefore, the appropriate allocations and sizes of capacitors are very important because they affect the reduction of system losses and improvement of the system voltage profile. In this article, a novel algorithm called the moth swarm algorithm (MSA) is developed to optimally determine the locations and sizes for installing capacitor banks in various radial distribution systems (RDN). The objective function is adapted to reduce the system power losses and to reduce total system cost. Consequently, an increase in the annual net saving with inequity constraints on capacitor size and voltage limits considering multi-loading levels is obtained. The validation of the proposed algorithm has been tested and verified through small, medium and large scales of standard RDN of IEEE (22, 69, 85-bus) systems and also on ring main 33-bus system. In addition, the obtained results are compared with other algorithms to highlight the advantages of the proposed approach. Numerical results stated that the MSA can achieve optimal solutions for losses reduction and capacitor locations with the finest performance compared with many existing algorithms.

The example of application of PMU in a Campus Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) is then elaborated. With the availability of synchrophasor data measurement, it makes possible to establish the power system monitoring by directly employing spectral analysis of power or phase angle response signals using Fourier Transforms or Short Time Fourier Transform, Prony or Wavelet analysis technique or any other combination among those methods. Moreover, using the wide area signal provided by PMU, power system stability control also gain benefit through the wide area control technique where the system provide a better response toward the inter-area oscillation compared to the conventional damping controller. Finally, at the end of this work, the application of phasor measurement technology in the small signal stability monitoring and the wide area control based on phasor measurement data are discussed.

The electrical power system loses its synchronization when it is subjected to a sudden event, such as high or low voltage and/or current levels due to disturbances, for instance, short circuits, lightning and the switching of the inductive loads. This paper presents the analysis of a coordination technique of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (RSFCL) and shunt Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to improve the power system transient stability. The main role of this combination model is to limit the fault current using superconducting technology and supporting the reactive power effectively using STATCOM. Transient stability investigations focus on studying the rotor oscillation of synchronous generators after the event of large unsettling influence. The objective is to demonstrate if the generator stays in synchronism after the fault eliminated. The output power, fault duration and generator rotor angle during the fault period are the most critical factors to be taken into consideration. A number of computer simulations using 'MATLAB/Simulink' were developed using single machine infinite bus (SMIB) to validate the models of RSFCL and STATCOM individually and combined at different fault duration.

Seasonal short-term electricity demand forecasting under tropical condition using fuzzy approach model 査読有り

Concern of this work is analysis and short-term electricity demand forecasting under tropical condition using fuzzy approach. Two different demand models are proposed for dry season and rainy season to forecast a total load demand in Makassar, Indonesia for 24 hours ahead in each season. Based on the typical characteristic of seasonal demand, three inputs (time of load, temperature, and type of day) are used for load model in dry season, and four inputs (time of load, temperature, type of day, and rainfall) for load model in rainy season. Meanwhile, output is estimated load in related seasons. Some forecasting error analyses are applied to models. Under tested cases, both seasonal models have good forecasting results with MAPE values smaller than 2.95%. Estimated demand values when holidays and non-holidays in each season which are relatively close to actual load have confirmed effectiveness of the fuzzy based models.

© 2017 Universiti Putra Malaysia Press. Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are an important component in Wide Area Protection (WAP)- based operations in power systems. It is needed that a certain placement scheme of PMUs is suggested if power system scale gets larger. The optimal placement of PMU in power systems has been considered and formulated in order to reduce the number of installed PMUs while accomplishing a desired level of reliability of observation. Optimal PMU Placement (OPP) problem as the combinatorial optimization problem has been formulated to determine the minimum PMU location in the power system. In this paper, Disparity Evolution-type Genetic Algorithm (DEGA) based on disparity theory of evolution is applied. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed for the purpose of comparison with DEGA. The optimization model is solved for IEEE 118 standard bus system. DEGA can find better placement suggestion compared with GA because of the nature of evolution that models the double spiral structure of DNA to hold the diversity of population.

As a consequence of increased urbanization, floods threaten inhabitants of various cities in Japan. Although a conventional way of treating urban flooding is to construct sewage systems, alternative approaches have to be developed because of their expense in the context of the current financial crisis, especially in local governments. Rain gardens, a type of low-impact development, have recently been recommended as a best management practice for the treatment of stormwater runoff in Northern European countries, the USA, etc. While demand for rain gardens has been increasing in Japan, there is a lack of knowledge about their functions and characteristics. The present study aims to explain the function of rain gardens through a verification experiment and field survey. This study shows that rain gardens are suitable for dealing with low flow volumes of rainwater, although their suitability could be slightly changed by soil properties and catchment area. Our field survey indicated that rain gardens must be connected to a sewage system. In addition, like other green infrastructure, rain gardens require maintenance. The most frequent type of maintenance is the disposal of garbage, as garbage can block channels running between a rain garden and a conventional sewage system. Moreover, garbage build up can lead to the retention of rain water for more than 36 h, and this water can become a habitat for mosquito larvae.

Optimum battery energy storage system using PSO considering dynamic demand response for microgrids 査読有り

All rights reserved.This article proposes a novel optimum sizing of battery energy storage system (BESS) using particle swarm optimization (PSO) incorporating dynamic demand response (DR) to improve a fast, smooth and secure system stability and performance, avoiding a microgrid from instability and system collapse during an emergency situation. An optimum size of BESS integrating DR can play an important role in frequency control of the microgrid in order to rapidly improve the system stability, restore the power equilibrium and prevent system collapse in the microgrid. The optimum size of BESS is evaluated by PSO incorporating DR based on frequency control of the microgrid. The results show that the optimum size of BESS-based PSO with DR can improve a fast, smooth and safe system performance and dynamic stability compared with the optimum size of BESS-based simulated annealing (SA) with DR and the conventional size. Nevertheless, the proposed sizing methods also determined the impact of BESS specified costs between modern and conventional BESS technologies. The capital cost, operating and maintenance cost of BESS were then investigated and compared in terms of economical performance for microgrid operations.

© 2016, Kerdphol et al.Background: An offline optimization approach based on energy storage management response in a microgrid was not fast and not reliable enough to control and adjust the system efficiently after the loss of the utility grid. Thus, it causes system inefficiency and collapse in the presence of violent changes of loads or outage of distributed generations. To solve such a problem, more real-time management is needed. Any changes in loads/generations should be compensated successfully by a battery energy storage system (BESS) in a short period of time. Methods: This paper presents a new method for the intelligent online management of both active and reactive power of a BESS based on a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) incorporating particle swarm optimization (PSO) to prevent the stand-alone microgrid from instability and system collapse. BESS is centrally controlled by a controller developed by the proposed RBFNN. PSO is used to determine the optimized active and reactive power at every load/generation changing situation to monitor the effect of system frequency, voltage, and reference power regulation. These optimized power data are then employed as target data for the RBFNN generalization and training process. To enable the online updating of the operating parameters, the proposed RBFNN is implemented in the management process. With an appropriate RBFNN training, the optimum active and reactive power can directly be obtained without the necessity of performing the PSO optimization process at any change of load/generation. Results: The results show that the predictive results of the proposed RBFNN model only slightly differed from the target results based on PSO and have a minimum statistical error compared to the predictive results based on the multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) model. Conclusions: The proposed RBFNN is suitable for the online estimation of the active and reactive power of BESS and can be used for real-time energy storage management as an online controller.

The coefficient of performance (COP) has been experimentally evaluated by changing the water temperature and the flow rate to control the heat amount. The energy-saving operation has been achieved by increasing the flow rate for the same heat amount. The thermal comfort has also been evaluated by calculating the predicted mean vote (PMV). In the case of the energy-saving operation, it is expected that the heat amount by radiation is reduced and impair the thermal comfort. However, it is found that its reduction has a small effect on the thermal comfort.

Published by Elsevier Ltd.Due to the high penetration level of wind farms in the electrical grids, many grid connectivity issues interested and must be highlighted such as the improvement of Fault-ride through (FRT) capability of grid integrated doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) based wind-turbine. In this paper the resistive superconducting fault current limiter (RSFCL) is proposed to minimize the fault current, enhance the FRT capability of DFIG, preserve DC-link voltage level and improve the power system quality under abnormal conditions. To achieve these objectives, the thermal modeling of the RSFCL is developed and its impact on the dynamic performance of DFIG is studied by using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The proposed scheme performance has been compared with the Outer Crowbar system to confirm its validity. Results stated that inserting the RSFCL during the fault is more effective than the Outer Crowbar in decreasing the rotor current and increasing the active power generation capacity of the wind turbine, thus enhancing the dc-link voltage, in addition to improve the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of the wind farm.

However, smart grid itself should be a part of the solution rather than being a new burden. According to this research, Electric Vehicles (EV) in the form of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) can play their own role for frequency control in an isolated power system. On the other hand, Microgrids mostly use Renewable Energy Systems (RES) in electrical power production that are naturally fluctuating, in a time there are increasing trends to install the controllable loads such as Heat Pumps (HPs) and V2Gs. On the other hand, operating manners and uncertainties in power systems cause the classic controllers to be unable to provide a proper performance over a wide range of operating conditions. In order to overcome such issues, this paper addresses a control scheme approach using Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM) technique to enhance the system validity and robustness against uncertainties. The proposed scheme suggests a parallel connection of CDM and PI controllers in which the performance has been compared with only conventional controller showing that the proposed scheme has superior validity. Different operation schemes have been simulated showing the flexibility of V2G utilization in the modern power system.
