© 2017 European Control Association This paper develops criteria for designing interval observers to guarantee robustness with respect to disturbances for feedback control of nonlinear systems. Intervals in which components of the state vector are guaranteed to stay are estimated based on the information of the range of the initial state and the disturbances. For formulating desirable properties of boundedness and convergence of estimated intervals in the presence of disturbances, the notion of integral input-to-state stability is introduced to interval observer design. Guaranteed properties of the observer-based feedback designed in the formulation are not only global, but also address nonlinearities which are broader than those covered by previously existing approaches.

© 2017 IEEE. This paper focuses on convergence properties of nonlinear stochastic systems in the presence of disturbances. Recently, integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and input-tostate stability (ISS) have been utilized for quantifying stochastic deviation of system trajectories from an equilibrium at each instant. While these notions are practically useful for estimating distribution of occurrences at each single time, they do not provide information about convergence of the trajectories. This paper deduces convergence properties from iISS and ISS by taking probability of path-wise events. It is shown that the notions of path-wise iISS/ISS are remarkably convenient for establishing stability of cascade systems. They allow us to formulate a trajectory-based approach to stability of interconnected stochastic systems. In contrast to Lyapunov-based approaches, trajectory-based arguments are free from technical assumptions caused by the Hessian term in Ito calculus.

© 2017 IEEE. The small-gain paradigm has long been used to verify stability of feedback interconnected systems. For component systems that are integral input-to-state stable (iISS), available small-gain results require the component systems to be strongly iISS. We remove this restriction by using a recently proposed Lyapunov characterization of iISS that allows cross terms between external inputs and states in the Lyapunov decrease condition. This novel formulation extends previously available iISS small-gain arguments, which is demonstrated in an example.

A stability criterion which a preceding study reported to relax a growth rate assumption is reviewed. Through presentation of its proof which was omitted in publication of the preceding study, this paper demonstrates that careful examination of the proof leads to several new extensions allowing disturbance inputs which were not allowed by the preceding result. Numerical simulation is shown to illustrate the mechanism and usefulness of the new criteria.

© 2017 This paper raises the issue of undesirable sublevel sets generated by Lyapunov functions for interconnection of integral input-to-state stable (iISS) systems. Sublevel sets are important information of forward invariant sets describing behavior of systems. This paper demonstrates for the previously available Lyapunov function that in the case of small stability margins, sublevel sets are compressed in one direction and stretched in the other direction extremely when a component system is not input-to-state stable (ISS). This paper also shows conservativeness of such sublevel sets by proposing a new Lyapunov function producing much better sublevel sets. The developments reveal practical issues to which we need to attend carefully when a component system is not ISS.

© 2017 This paper peruses path-wise bounds, integral input-to-state stability and integral noise-to-state stability for stochastic nonlinear systems and proposes their Lyapunov-type characterizations. The characterizations are utilized to develop small-gain criteria to verify stability of interconnected systems. In contrast to preceding results, the developments allow stochastic noise to be active globally in the state space. The obtained criteria are made parallel to deterministic ones by resolving fundamental issues arising from stochastic noises.

This paper pursues a stability criterion by which better Lyapunov functions establishing stability of interconnected nonlinear systems can be constructed. Component systems are assumed to be integral input-to-state stable (iISS). Although the iISS small-gain condition in the literature is a necessary and sufficient condition in an appropriate sense, the Lyapunov function constructed for the interconnected system by the existing results is virtually unusable when stability margins are small. To identify the origin of the undesirable feature, this paper investigates techniques of iISS preservation. For developing a powerful remedy, the usage of the Legendre-Fenchel transformation in the preservation is generalized to remove all unnecessary assumptions used in previously existing results. The development is useful for establishing input-to-state stability of an interconnection from iISS components.

Furthermore, it has been observed that the properties of strong iISS and nonlinear L 2 -gain are preserved when multiple systems satisfying the respective property are connected in cascade. This technical note clarifies the relationships between various input-to-state stability and (non)linear L p -gain properties.

This paper tackles the problem of decentralizing interval observers for robust controlling and monitoring a class of nonlinear systems. The observer-based output feedback system considered in this paper is very different from classical systems in that an observer-type system is constructed not only for controlling the state variables, but also for accurate component-wise estimation of the state variables for the entire time. Supposing that a given plant admits a classical decentralized Luenberger-type observer giving only asymptotic estimation when time is large enough in the absence of disturbances, this paper proposes an interval observer to which the classical observer can be upgraded. To achieve asymptotic convergence of the state and the estimated interval to zero in the presence of converging disturbances, the notion of integral input-to-state stability is utilized.

© 2016 IEEE.This paper proposes a new method to construct Lyapunov functions for networks of integral input-to-state stable systems. The idea of the construction is to sum up Lyapunov functions of component systems. This sum-type construction can directly cover systems which are not input-to-state stable, although another popular construction of max-type cannot. According to the sum-type construction available in the literature, the growth order of the Lyapunov function with respect to state variables is a function of stability margin. As the margin approaches zero, i.e., as the largest amplification factor of components maintaining stability reduces to unity, the growth of the constructed Lyapunov function increases unboundedly. This paper proposes a technique of Lyapunov construction avoiding such rapid growth. This paper also highlights another unique advantage of reducing the number of tests a typical small-gain criterion requires.

This paper proposes an approach to the design of decentralized interval observer-based output feedback controllers for a class of nonlinear systems. In contrast to observers in the classical sense, the interval observer not only generates signals to stabilize the system based on output measurement, but also provides all times an interval in which the state vector is sure to lie. This paper shows how to introduce decentralized structure to the interval observer-based output feedback for stabilization of large-scale systems with decoupled communication. The notion of integral input-to-state stability is utilized successfully to achieve convergence of the state and the estimated interval to zero in the presence of disturbances.

This paper proposes a set of tools to make use of such scalings and illustrates their benefits in constructing Lyapunov functions for interconnected nonlinear systems. First, the essence of some scaling techniques used extensively in the literature is reformulated in view of preservation of dissipation inequalities of integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and input-to-state stability (ISS). The iISS small-gain theorem is revisited from this viewpoint. Preservation of ISS dissipation inequalities is shown to not always be necessary, while preserving iISS which is weaker than ISS is convenient. By establishing relationships between the Legendre–Fenchel transform and the reformulated scaling techniques, this paper proposes a way to construct less complicated Lyapunov functions for interconnected systems.

© 2016This paper tackles the problem of constructing Lyapunov functions of interconnected systems when gain margins are not linear. Nonlinear small-gain criteria such as (i)ISS small-gain theorems allow systems to have gains which are not necessarily linear. However, allowing nonlinear gains does not mean coping with nonlinear gain margins. Gain margins quantify how small the map of the (nonlinear) loop gain is with respect to the identity map. In the integral input-to-state stability (iISS) framework which do not require input-to-state stability (ISS), in contrast to trajectory-based arguments, construction of Lyapunov functions in the literature has been often limited to the linear gain margin case. For constructing Lyapunov functions of interconnected systems whose components are not necessarily ISS and whose linear gain margins allowed to be zero, this paper develops a symmetric formula which has several clear advantages.

© 2016The objective of this paper is to tackle point stability of stochastic systems without requiring noise diffusion coefficients to vanish at the point of interest. Behavioral differences between vanishing coefficients and non-vanishing coefficients arising in adding stochastic noises are illustrated by examples. To identify the differences appropriately, this paper examines the concept of equilibria and proposes several stability properties by introducing the notions of instantaneous points and almost sure equilibria. In addition to clarifying the relationship between those stability properties, Lyapunov-type characterizations are presented as sufficient conditions for those stability properties by making use of functions which are not necessarily twice differentiable at the point of interest. Discussion is also given to relate the stability property of an instantaneous point with noise-to-state stability.
